Short clips of interesting places.

Tough but fair.

Beautiful path.

Messing with a dude wearing Asian monk robes is just asking for embarrassment.

Am I being punked?

Beautiful belugas! Much better than otters, penguins, yaks, and bats!

15 In gaming news, what was Capcom thinking?

They created an avatar skin of Yor Forger from Spy x Family for Street Fighter. Bad enough it is an avatar skin.

But no, Capcom has to go full LeRoy Jenkins. Their version of Yor is well unappealing. Yor's puffy face makes it appear she has been gorging on pork rinds and bon-bons while still being hungry.

Do better Capcom, you just had one job.

57 Here is my assessment of 21st century American politics. If you agree with it, you can feel free to put it in your pocket and call it your own. If not, then get bent, because you're wrong and I'm right

When I talk about this, I'm going to say some less-than-complimentary things about the "Parties" people vote for... it's not aimed at them, but the people they elect. There is only one Party, with two unequal factions, the system is rigged, and those voters are largely decent people who've been rooked by a pack of lies.

The Republicans are bottomlessly corrupt sneakthieves who'd sell their own mothers for a dime if they thought they could peel a penny off the deal.

The Democrats are power crazed bigots who'd burn the world to satisfy the visions of dominance that haunt them, and that dime means less than nothing to them.

This is the choice those voters have. So it's not actually a choice at all, but a foreordained conclusion.

End of the year statistics have come out at Canine Chronicle. It's bittersweet to see that Delilah finished 2023 as the #4 Borzoi in Breed competition and #5 in All-Breed competition, despite not being shown for the last four months of the year.

The final score for her career:
- 2058 Borzoi defeated
- 16211 defeated all breeds
- 803 Grand Champion points
- 2115 National Owner-Handler Series points
- Three All-Breed Best in Shows
- Four Reserve Best in Shows
- Seven Owner-Handled Best in Shows
- 2021 BCOA National Specialty Best in Show
- Seven regional Specialty Best in Shows
- 113 Hound Group placements, including 37 Group Firsts
- First Platinum-level Owner-Handled Borzoi

Her work here was done. We wanted her for longer, but He needed her for the adornment of a Better Place. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the Name of the Lord.

122 A thread with photos about the restoration [although not a Vauban-style fort!]

The Civil Rights Lawyer @johnbryanesq Jan 7
Some have asked for pics of the Revolutionary War fort we discovered inside an old plantation house in West Virginia. Almost none of the original Rev War frontier log forts survive. Historians believed an old log fort know as Byrnside’s Fort was still there, inside the walls of this large house. But…

We had to buy the property first before being able to take a crowbar to it to see if the logs were inside the walls. I was 90% sure they were there…

At the mouth of the cave, a 1725 Spanish silver coin was found, cut to make change. More 18th century Spanish silver coins were found around the yard, some cut and some whole. This was the preferred coinage for early American settlers.

125 One of the most incredible and heroic stories while managing to stay alive has to be Sgt. Norman Jackson.

Jackson was the flight engineer on a Lancaster bomber on a mission to bomb Schweinfurt. After leaving the target his bomber was attacked by a German night fighter which set ablaze the right inboard engine. With his pilot's permission Jackson tucked a small fire extinguisher inside his furs, popped the overhead hatch, pulled the ripcord on his parachute, and he started to crawl towards the engine using an axe to keep a hold of the plane. The German fighter then attacked again. Sgt. Jackson was knocked off his aircraft and fell to earth with a partially open parachute that was also on fire.

Miraculously Sgt Jackson survived his midnight fall with only a few broken bones. He spent the rest of war as a POW. After being liberated he was presented with the Victoria Cross by the King.

I'm preparing to do the big Cable Cut here, and in anticipation of the project, I've ordered a multi-function weather station, already have the Over The Air antenna, and will have the 20 ft. galvanized, heavy wall steel tubing (for the mast), delivered tomorrow.

I'd also like to go ahead and mount a HAM antenna, but knowing nothing about 1/4 , 1/2 , 5/8 wave(s), I'll ask a question in my ignorance.

Is there a good All Around or Universal (or something near to it) HAM antenna? I know a lot has to do with whichever frequency ranges will be in use. But I'll also be in the market for a "once and done" purchase of a good base station. Used is fine, if in great condition.

Yaesu and Icom make some "All Frequencies" units. Spendy things, they are. Note: I'm NOT looking to try to make "around the world" contacts. Not my interest.

This is for local and regional comms, for when SHTF, be it hurricane or anti-fartz, or such. I don't want a wall of radio gear.

Jim, there's alot to unpack here. Local comms are generally VHF and UHF. To be more than local-local, these generally rely on repeaters, which may be problematic in a SHTF situation. Longer range is HF.

There's no magic 'all-in-one' antenna solution. You can, however, do things that minimize the number of antennas.

Maybe we should set up a call.

But if you did a Big Thing, it was known, and it would make your career, and make you a celebrity in the city, and a wreath of grass was enough, because at the end of the day, everyone knew that legions brought the gold, and were worth more than any amount of it on a given day.

The real answer of course is no but there are some reasonable compromises. How much room do you have and do you need to be HOA-stealthy? Before the recent move, I was thinking about one of these:

Specifically the 80 Short.

That 25 ft. height recommendation is a hurdle, but only in the sense that the tubing I've bought comes in 20 ft. lengths. I'd have to weld-in an extension for more height.

I'm not HOA restricted, as there's nothing about antennas in the By-Laws. I'm welding-on "arms", for the OTA TV antenna, and another for the Weather Station. The HAM antenna can go dead-center on the top, and I *can* use any (applicable) kind of antenna.

The pole will be braced with galvanized steel, to the fascia (14 ft. above ground) and through to the rafters, and guy-wired from the top, in a three-point spread. Base will be a flange set into the rebar of a poured concrete footing.

Paying the escrow ahead allows you to keep your standard budget without worrying about it.
However, I paid of a 30 year loan in 12 years. What feat of investment have you done, did you beat the NASDAQ? Did you earn more than the interest saved on your mortgage?

What did I do last year was to live on what I would have paid for my mortgage if I had paid the minimum required plus the extra escrow for thirty years.

Love your debt. You will have it forever unless you work to pay it off. If the economy goes soft or you lose your job you may not be able to pay it off later.

268 I remember Jan 6 as the day a guy in a viking helmet and a grandma with a walker nearly toppled democracy.

270 Paying off the mortgage (not escrow) early makes sense the interest rate is 8%. When it’s 3%, not so much. I can make much better use of money and earn more than 3%. Hell a CD pays 5% these days if you want zero risk.

282 Had you paid the mortgage in 12 months it wouldn’t change the fact there is no interest charged on escrow. But you do you my friend.
Posted by: Montec at January 10, 2024 09:44 PM (cZaBj)

did you beat the market when you did that? Did you come out ahead, or is this just "actually, hypothetically it is a better idea if you time the market right"
'cause, you know, you could lose your shirt and pay all those broker fees and capital gains as well as have to shell out the additional escrow.

Which was $150, or $12.50 a month for a year in our initial example.

take the risk, play the investment wizzard, pay the broker fees (or the cost above spot if you are buying silver and gold) and pay the extra taxes for when you sell 1/12th each month at a hopeful gain instead of a loss, or just pay the damned amount early and save yourself a headache since, after all, you claim to have it on hand anyways ready to invest . . .

and you do you, yourself.

285 Forecast did have high of -2 in a couple of days. But, that's silly; this is Oklahoma! So, of course, that's been revised upward. The high that day will be a toasty +6!

Howdy Hoardies. What did I miss not reading comments all day?

Missed from last night: Special salute to & prayer for the brave gnubreed.

287 Jim, by the time I would have been able to refinance at 15 year at a better rate, I was already doubling my monthly payment and by my calculation I was beating the what I would have saved through eventual interest savings anyways.
I also had some margin for safety, since if my finances turned taco-shaped, I would have been able to muddle through to a new job.

My credit rating is poor because I know I have no head for money, so I don't live with debt. I live that way.
