Jeepers. It's not like anyone died or anything. Totally. Some people would actually pay for the privilege of being violently sucked out of a planes fuselage at 12,000 feet and free-falling to earth without a parachute only to land in 2:27 seconds. There was a time when you'd have an audit chain after installation, for torque, safety wiring, correct fasters, shimming, all done through paint dots. The auditor would come in, check and dot by the bolt. Then the next party, doing anti corrosion sealing or something wouldn't start until he saw the dots. For every aircraft.
The FAA has the ability to correct this. For any other manufacturer the hand of FAA is frightening. They can shut you completely down for a while, which you may survive, or permanently. It's been my decades long experience that unlike everyone else, Boeing has no fear of FAA. Posted by: banana Dream at January 14, 2024 02:25 PM (Y6IkP) 67
I've commented on the "woke" nature of companies that are responsible for building things with potential life or death situations; airplanes and their parts, bridges, elevators, most of the tech used today and so on. Not only do the people not know what they're doing or why, but they've no clue how to fix the very shit they are responsible for.
None. A society that relies on technology like ours does is going to collapse not because some asshole is in the White House. It's going to collapse because nobody has any idea how to fix any piece of tech or machinery that's required to support that civilized society. You're seeing it happen right before your eyes. - The family watched a few train shows on the TV yesterday. They were pretty good, and I enjoyed seeing all of the things that go into making trains work that people don't think about. Stuff as simple as maintaining the drainage under the track. One show was the Rocky Mountaineer, and it was glorious, with majestic views and the rail crews doing their thing and brake pads being checked and changed at each stop and etc. etc., and there are PhD candidates figuring out multimillion dollar ways to give grizzly bears five more seconds to become aware that a train is coming so that they can clear the tracks. There was also an eight mile "spiral" designed to reduce a steep grade from 4.4 to 2.2. The next show was a train in Peru that travels through the Andes, with a little pilot engine that travels 15 minutes ahead of it to clear sheep from the tracks, let people know a train is coming soon, and no-joke try to borrow chainsaws from locals to clear trees from the tracks when they come across one. And the engineer was one of two people who has worked long enough to be trusted to not crash the train on the 4.5 degree grades. It was neat to see the difference between the two worlds and know where we're headed. It used to be that large corporations had extensive research departments run by scientists and engineers. Think Bell Labs, Du Pont Central Research, or Merck. Then the corporate raiders got into it in the 80s and those corporations became the fiefdoms of the Al Dunlop types. You know, the arms-akimbo, suspender-wearing assholes in every business magazine. A lot of companies with terrible management and safety/quality culture are kept ticking along by crotchety old geezers who know what they are doing and care. They inspire others by their stubborn hardheadedness into being future old geezers. HR has been actively kicking these types to the road and companies think they can replace any of them with a warm body and training.

67 I've commented on the "woke" nature of companies that are responsible for building things with potential life or death situations; airplanes and their parts, bridges, elevators, most of the tech used today and so on.
You have to really try to die in a car wreck. Little kids and old people have a tendency to die when their bodies stop abruptly because humans aren't designed to do that, but 18-50 year olds that are buckled up have something like a 70% chance to survive a wreck. Add speed or sideways/reckless whatever and it changes those odds, but just cruising down the road and having a wreck is shockingly survivable if folks just buckle up. Posted by: nurse ratched at January 14, 2024 02:32 PM (k0MVD) The statistics all rely on the fact that people fly much less than drive. And aircraft travel more miles. So that effects the statistics for an individual and the per mile which the industry likes to use. And that probably is a good basis for comparison for most people. But if you use per hour travel it starts getting close to even and on a per trip basis it starts getting worse for aircraft. Apples to oranges though. Rate per passenger mile is the most correct hazard comparison, as long as you keep the comparison within the same mode of transportation.
Otherwise we may find that rocket ship is really the safest way to go. Back to cars - we don't use raw per capita rates. It may be OK for infectious disease but is meaningless when looking at tech devices and ignores how common or frequently those devices are used... in this way it is pointless to use per capita for gun 'safety', but if perfectly fair to show how dangerous the people are.... Yesterday we had high winds during the midday hours. The power blinked off and on here several times.
I no longer presume the power company is intelligent enough to stage bucket trucks and crews around the service area in those spots "that always seem to lose power." You can track them on a map of outages. Go visit them and you'll note the trees that haven't been trimmed in years. Like the stand of White Pines just up the road that whipsaw around in 20MPH breezes and damn near touch the ground in 40MPH winds. Those trees just happen to have main service lines running through them. And those main service lines service me. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 14, 2024 03:09 PM (Q4IgG) 176

They even brought out of retirement a bunch of the old guys that ran the line. They brought them onto the new floor space and the old guys walked up to all the jigs for everything and said, "hey, where's all the paint chips, scratches, marks?". The execs replied, "We stripped them down and repainted them to look nice!". The old guys all turned and started leaving. The marks were the only guide left for proper section mating. Greetings, Horde ... For hubby's next birthday, I'd like to surprise him by getting our outdoor gas grill tuned up ... God blessed him with cerebral talents, including how to be always prepared to financially compensate those He blessed with mechanical talents.
So, today, I'm wondering about what type of business might offer either tuneups or repair services for propane grills ... My Bosch gas cooktop is heating unevenly. The flame is only strong out of one side of the burner. I have to keep turning the pan to make sure the food cooks evenly. When it turn to very low setting, it clicks even though I can still see flame.
Is there a way to clean the jets or do I need a new cooktop? Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) 1. Check to make sure the cover of the burner element is seated properly. They can be misaligned which can prevent some flame holes from getting the correct fuel/air mixture. 2. I've noted here before that outsourcing shit to India/Indians is destroying a lot of the first world infrastructure we take for granted. That's not the deal here with the door, as far as I know, but Boeing is definitely on my shitlist for farming out software to H1B's and overseas offices.
They killed hundreds of people doing that; I refuse to trust a company that willingly does this. Over in my career, years ago corporate started farming work out to offices in India. The stupid twats managed to fuck up a bunch of stuff and got several people - clients of our customers - killed. Which of course means corporate axed all the American offices and went 100% dot-not-feather Indian. The entire product crashed and burned about 3 years later. We've lost much of the tooling and documentation for building things fielded as recently as the F22. God help you for something as relatively ancient as the Minuteman III. Hell, look at fundamental aircraft production stuff - we have VERY few large machines capable of making some of the structural elements needed for fighter aircraft. And unless something has changed, the people and tooling and knowledge that made *those* machines is gone entirely. Take out ~5 pieces of equipment in North America and we lose the capability to make modern fighters entirely. Posted by: somedood at January 14, 2024 03:17 PM (N9SfE) 199

Google the saga of MLK Hospital in Los Angeles sometime. Various agencies tried to shut the place down for, I don't know, decades, but it was built to serve -- and provide jobs for -- the DEI population. Maxine Waters kept it open as long as she could, but the malpractice and maladministration deaths finally became too much even for woke government regulators.
After all, only poor black people were dying at MLK Hospital, and they don't have any political clout. It's the roadmap for the future - minorities are accepted into med school using DEI standards, and minority patients are supposed to be seen only by minority doctors. We'll end up with two medical systems, the DEI system for minorities, and the everyone-else system. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 14, 2024 03:18 PM (YAtuc) 205

I hate long car rides because I can't read in a moving car. I really like flying and I am going to wear the most comfortable clothes I can. It is always too hot or too cold, uncomfortable seats so planning ahead for those conditions makes a difference. Also figuring out where the bathrooms are before they turn out the lights.

There is a class action against Spirit Aerospace in 2019 by several former employees alleging the company was pushing product, entire fuselages, out on schedule no matter what. Which resulted in the Boeing plants having to correct defects they missed.
Who is Spirit Aerospace? Boeing spun off their Wichita, KS plant, that in WWII produced B-29s, as a new company called Spirit Aerospace. Boeing's sole source of fuselages as an independent company. Not very smart in hindsight because where else can Boeing turn to if Spirit Aerospace messes up? No one. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 14, 2024 03:39 PM (fSNP4) 259

I no longer see any benefit to dressing "up" when traveling by airplane ... The seats these days are SO close together that -- if your adjacent passenger sneezes -- your clothes are apt to be decorated with snot ... Plus, if either your adjacent passenger (or yourself) attempts to consume foods or beverages with (essentially) shackled arms, there's more than a good chance there will be spills somewhere ... Consequently, I'll wear clothing on airplanes which can be placed in a washing machine as soon as I reach my destination.

I am baffled by the seating on that plane, unless you are one of the weird "Isle seat" folks...why would anyone NOT sit on the window/wall side? Where you have something to lean against, fluff a pillow against, stretch out your legs across the empty middle.
I always sit at the very back, usually get an empty row to myself, board at the very last moment...leave my hanging bag in the Pilots locker just inside the door, then stroll through the packed plane, with only a small soft case...wearing a cowboy hat, getting "Knowing nods" from numerous passengers, that all assume I am the "Air Marshal". Even had some later in flight try to send a drink via the Stewardess, had to send her back with a "Thanks but no" response.(simply because I don't drink alcohol) I did take advantage of that misconception once on a Late flight from Las Vegas to Chicago, walked up to a loud group mid plane/mid fight and told them to. "Pipe down, party is over, you ain't IN Vegas anymore.. no disturbing other passengers in ANY way, not if you ever want to fly again". Stewardess brought me a hot towel, fresh made coffee, in "Thanks". Sit and wait, get off last..none of that silly standing in the isle. Posted by: birdog at January 14, 2024 04:41 PM (sYlnp) 312
