The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

blake coffee.png

(Photo H/T Blake)

***

'Mornin' Horde. Hope you are all able to sit upright and drink your favorite beverage at the moment.

Before we get into today's Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping items (Rulz for those of you in Egg Harbor)

  • This an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away until the lovely and talented KT comes along.
  • Be kind to the Hectors and Sydneys of the world.
  • Feel free to run with sharp objects if you wish, no prayers for a GoFundMe account however.
  • Have a wonderful weekend.

    ***

Since I don't stop at Starbucks for coffee. I could care less about this move. What about you?

Starbucks now allowing use of personal cups for mobile orders, drive-thrus

Starbucks customers in the U.S. and Canada can now order more sustainably, if they choose.

Effective Jan. 3, 2024, the coffee company is allowing customers to bring their own personal cups for mobile orders and drive-thrus in both countries, a spokesperson confirmed with Global News Thursday.

The move is part of the company’s ongoing effort to reduce cup waste in landfills and shift towards reusables.

    AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

    Prayer Requests:
12/4 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers as she went to visit a man “M” in the hospital. He’s not a member of her congregation, but is a friend of a friend who was okay with her visiting. He has had one thing after another, and has been in and out of the hospital. Prayers for his healing would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
12/21 Update – Prayers are still needed for “M”. He is in really bad shape now and was released from the hospital because a family member was being very difficult. “M” has been in and out of the hospital since August.

12/5 – Jewells45 sent an update. She spent 5 hours seeing the doctor, waiting, getting the infusion of new drugs, waiting some more…. The news is a mixed bag: some improved, some stable, and some worsened, and new metastases in her lungs and ribcage. The pain is daily, but manageable for now. The good news was that it has not spread.
12/6 Update – Jewells is in tremendous pain since she started on the new drug treatment: headache, chest pain like a heart attack, joints... She can’t eat or function.
12/16 Update – Jewells says she is doing better. She saw the NP and addressed the issues she was having. They are going to tweak a few things next time. It will still probably be bad but hopefully not as bad. She will tough this out until the next CT scan. If she continues to feel as horrible as she did, then she will ask for other options. If there aren’t any, well…..

12/9 – Eromero asked for prayers for his friend Lauren, as her gall bladder had turned on her.
12/16 Update – Lauren made it through gall bladder removal. They just vacuum it right out. Almost routine except when the gall bladder is attached to someone you care for. Praise God for healing, tender mercies, and blessings all!

12/15 – Washington Nearsider requests prayers. After taking what he believes was a principled stand, he was removed from his job as a federal agent after nearly 20 years of service. Please pray that he can find sufficient employment before his savings are exhausted, and that he can find the grace to provide a joyful Christmas full of gratitude for his two young children.

12/15 – DaveT sent an update. He is the retired gentleman that we prayed for in Oct-Nov, who was going through legal battles to save his home, for himself and his cats. He did receive enough contributions to his GiveSendGo to file a response and counter-claim, and was successful! Thank you to everyone who contributed prayers and donations! He is proceeding with one more necessary battle, which requires $400+ in filing fees, so his GiveSendGo is still open. Please email Annie’s Stew for the link to it, if you wish to contribute.

12/16 – neverenoughcaffiene posted prayers for the day: Berserker lost his BIL; they buried him yesterday. Debby Doberman Schultz lost her brother yesterday. Hadrian and her majesty lost Delilah yesterday.

12/16 – Sugar Plum fairy requested prayers for the family and friends of Katie and Grace, two sisters who died in a horrible car accident on 12/15. They were beautiful happy girls and full of life. They are from a small town where everyone knows each other, and it is a huge blow for the entire town.

12/16 – Legally Sufficient asked for prayers for a dear friend who needs them ASAP. No details yet, but it seems to be a medical event.

12/16 – Kindltot asked for prayers for comfort for her sister-in-law, Lonie, whose husband died of pneumonia and cancer.

12/16 – Paisley13 asked for prayers. The first is for their trainer, going through her 3rd bout of cancer. She is one of a kind. She’s been in the hospital and prayers for her family and her, especially if this is her time to be called home. The second is for dear BIL going through the first rounds of chemo. He and sis have a positive attitude but know there are days where they could use an extra prayer.

12/16 – Jim (in kalifornia) could still use prayers. His wife is in the hospital for a routine procedure to put in liver stents. It didn’t go well. She is on antibiotics. She is in a catch-22: she can’t get chemo until her liver is health enough, but the tumors are also damaging her liver. Jim had an abdominal bug and had to go to the ER, but he’s better.
12/27 Update – The doctor confirmed that his wife is going through liver failure. Her “liver” is huge and 90% composed of metastases. He has no estimate for how long she has.

12/21 – Skip would appreciate prayers for recovery for his mom. She had a mini stroke before Christmas. She got to the hospital and seems fine and no outward side effects. She should be in rehabilitation soon.

12/21 – Nurse Ratched asked for prayers for a rare commenter that she knows, whose mother is dying. She is in her 90s and had a good run. Please pray for peace and calm at her passing. She is at home and on hospice.

12/21 – NaCly Dog asked for prayers for the mother-in-law of his old boss, who went to hospice.

12/21 – PD asked for prayers for Nick, who was recently diagnosed with an inoperable tumor. He will undergo aggressive chemotherapy. Prayers are needed for strength for him and his son.

12/21 – Oddbob asked for prayers that his house in TX sells soon. They had to move to NE on short notice a few months ago, to help care for their granddaughter. They don’t have the resources to pay for rent and also the mortgage for very long.

12/21 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers again for Baby Lillian. She is back in the hospital with a hemoglobin issue. Baby Lillian is the great-niece of a member of her congregation.

12/26 – Anonosaurus Wrecks and Mrs. Wrecks could use some prayers. They had a terrible Christmas. Mrs. Wrecks took out the trash on Christmas Eve, and fell and broke her leg and her wrist. Then their daughter accidentally overdosed their dog with insulin. They had to take the dog to a super expensive emergency vet, but the dog is okay now. Mrs. Wrecks is still in the hospital because no pharmacies were open, so she couldn’t get any pain meds. She also needs special medical equipment.

12/27 – TecumsehTea requested prayers for a dear friend, Pastor Joe, who has a benign brain tumor that they have been watching. It has grown about ¾ of an inch in the past 6 months and needs to be removed. It’s in a tricky spot, making the surgery risky, but they can’t leave it for much longer. In the past 2 years he has dealt with a heart attack and prostate cancer, and now this. He has deep faith and trusts the Lord. His family is understandably anxious. Prayers for wisdom for the doctors, peace and comfort for his family, for continued mercy and healing for Pastor Joe.

12/29 – Captain Hate’s daughter sent word that Captain Hate had died. He had a steep decline over the past week. She sent the family’s thanks for their support.

12/30 – FenelonSpoke updated the Horde on their church organist, Jessie (age 95). She now has bronchitis. Prayers are much appreciated.
1/6 Update – Jessie has recovered from bronchitis and appreciates the prayers.

12/31 – Weak Geek and his family could use prayers. His father died on 12/26. He was 87. His passing was peaceful; he had been put on morphine for comfort care.

1/3 – Browndog asked for prayers. His PSA will be tested today, to see what’s up (or down). It’s been four years since he began this fight (#howwedoing).

1/6 – Our Country is Screwed asked for prayers for his daughter. At 26 years old, she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. They are still running tests and scans to determine what treatment options are available.

1/6 – Mindful Webworker asked for prayers for his oldest friend, who has some throat problem; looking at being fed via a tube. He’s a great guy and has been through a lot.

1/10 – GnuBreed posted that he has been mostly absent from the comments as he strove to get a liver transplant. He was not able to, due to a worn out body, and he will be entering hospice soon. His end is near. He says the transplant team made a fair judgement.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

11 Started Hospice care for wife a couple of days ago. Those folks can sure get meds and supplies fast. Wife mostly sleeps (about 12-15 hours a day), but is mostly not in pain, thank the Lord. She's mostly able to walk around on her own for now (but I'm always there to make sure she doesn't fall down and get hurt). She's sad that she won't be able to see the youngest make 18.

Pancreatic cancer is a sneaky bastard. You don't feel it until it's gotten to the point where there's little that be done. My wife's great-aunt had that. Her kids and grandkids refused to tell her what was wrong with her (which infuriated me). Why? 67 Starbucks customers in the U.S. and Canada can now order more sustainably, if they choose.

    --

I think it's hilarious that they're doing their best to convince people that saving hundreds of millions of dollars on cups with logos on them (and the lids, and the little sleeve, and the etc) is "saving the earth" and not "saving them billions of dollars in a sh*tty economy"

See also: Subway is now copying Jimmy Johns in trying to convince people that slicing meat in the store is "fresh" and not the cheapest way to purchase large quantities of meat.

it's the Monty Python "String" skit in real life.

82 Back from airing up the Buick's tires. They were all down to 32, when they should be 33 at a minimum. If we really are going to see below freezing temps, airing them to 35, as I just did, should insure they will be at 33 or so for the length of the big chill. This will help with gas mileage and handling. Flabby tires are no fun.

Though I did learn in Denver that if you need to drive in snow, letting a pound or three out of the tires will let them spread out a little and give you more traction. Never tried it myself; true?

199 Swede loves coffee. Been loving it for over 300 years. Even though some royals did not....

"King Gustav III hated coffee and was intent on demonstrating that the drink was bad for one’s health. So, in addition to convincing the Swedish botanist and avid coffee drinker Carl Linneas to write a dissertation on the negative effects of coffee, Gustav commissioned what is now jokingly called “Sweden’s first clinical study.”

The king ordered two identical twins, condemned to death, into his very own research trial. One twin would drink an absurd amount of coffee daily while the other twin was forced to drink tea. Let’s just say that everyone but the coffee drinker died before the “study” was ever concluded. The first to go were the supervising physicians, followed by King Gustav III, then the tea-sipping brother, and finally the coffee drinking rebel. "

Frankly, I don't think he ever practiced his stepfather's trade to any great extent. None of his parables and stories involve carpentry (that I recall)-- and if you've known or hung out with tradesmen, they absolutely have stories, and tie discussions back to what they know and practice every day.

Interestingly, that brings up another point that was made in that same conversation.

Imagine all the everyday miracles that aren't written down. Jesus lived a human life, and we've got a few pages of a few moments. Think of the in-between life of God.

FWIW I don't think he ever cut a board too short, but I think he had wood and parts fail.

What it showed is that the Pope is not the Catholic Church. He can't change doctrine. "Papal infallibility" is a check on the Throne of St. Peter, not a license to rule by decree.

The depth of opposition shows that if the Pope exceeds his authority, he will get pushback, as he should.

Also funny how many liberal Catholics suddenly became Ultramontanists. When we get an orthodox pope, the term "dissident Catholic" will come back into vogue.

264 Gonna try making pizza from store-bought Publix dough tonight.

Put it into a container this morning with an oiled bottom and sides, it will rest 9 hours at least.

Have semolina fine flour for using on counter and on top when forming dough into pizza shape with crust rim. I know not to touch the rim but to use fingers and hands in the center, increasing size.

My prob is not knowing how big to make the pizza. The Italian chef I watched on a video used a 250g packaged dough to make a 12 inch pie.

So here's my math for a pie made with 1 pound = 454 grams of dough. 454 divided by 250 is 1.816. The area of a circle is proportional to the square of its radius, so I need a radius whose square is 1.816 that of 36 which is 6 squared. So 36 x 1.816 is 65 and change, the square root of that is a tiny bit more than 8. I need to make a 16 inch pizza.

So off to the store for some good crushed tomato in a container, preferably San Marzano, a ball of mozzarella, a piece of pecorino cheese to fine-grate or some already grated, a little potted basil plant, and I'll be ready.

It'll be a 16 incher, margherita style, with anchovies.

    273 pizza part deux

In a hot pan laying on the bottom of the oven, the oven cranked up to 500, the pizza with only the tomato is laid with its parchment paper under, for 2 to 4 minutes, turning once, then another minute.

Out it comes, the oven is changed to broil with a rack up high, the pizza is dressed with first basil leaves, finger-applied pecorino cheese on the leaves, then thick strips of mozzarella, and an array of 12 anchovies like the numbers on a clock.

No parchment paper under, the pizza all dressed goes under the broiler for a minute or less, with one rotation, this, to melt the mozz and brown and crisp the crust.

    Bon appetit

305 Been making bread for the last three months and having fun with it.

I have the recipe memorized for a small round loaf baked in a 2 qt porcelain cast iron dutch oven, and in between have been trying different recipes to make ciabatta-type or pan de crystal type loaves with high hydration dough.

All these recipes I find have the ingredients in metric, or most do, so I gotta do the math to get cups, tablespoons, ounces. Or swing for a digital kitchen scale.

Bread making ain't math, it's physics and chemistry.

But if I have a scale, switched to metric, all I gotta do is count.

323 We lived in the high peaks part of the Adirondacks for almost 15 years beginning '01, and loved the winters best.

Beginning about December 1 each year, it seemed like it snowed at least every other day. I had a heavy duty walk behind powered snowthrower and often cleared the driveway of 6 and more inches of fluff.

We had cold snaps in Januarys and early Februarys that put us well below zero for a week or more. It went to 28 below one night and our sewer line froze and had to be jetted out from an access cleanout near the curb to the sewer main manhole 60 feet away.

So on a bluebird day, morning, bright sunshine, 17 below, I'm out there with the plumber guys, we're all in just Carhartt vests, digging and yukking with the jet truck guy. I had a flask with Irish in it, passing it around.

I don't recall any school closings then.
