***

Good morning and Happy 2024 the first Coffee Break Thread of the new year. A different kind of music this morning.

Resolutions for 2024? Simple Rulz.....

1) Lurk, opine and/or bloviate away.
2) Be nice.
3) Running with sharp objects is frowned upon.
4) Have a nice weekend.

***

Thank you Annie for the following Prayer List.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:
12/4 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers as she went to visit a man “M” in the hospital. He’s not a member of her congregation, but is a friend of a friend who was okay with her visiting. He has had one thing after another, and has been in and out of the hospital. Prayers for his healing would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
12/21 Update – Prayers are still needed for “M”. He is in really bad shape now and was released from the hospital because a family member was being very difficult. “M” has been in and out of the hospital since August.

12/5 – Jewells45 sent an update. She spent 5 hours seeing the doctor, waiting, getting the infusion of new drugs, waiting some more…. The news is a mixed bag: some improved, some stable, and some worsened, and new metastases in her lungs and ribcage. The pain is daily, but manageable for now. The good news was that it has not spread.
12/6 Update – Jewells is in tremendous pain since she started on the new drug treatment: headache, chest pain like a heart attack, joints... She can’t eat or function.
12/16 Update – Jewells says she is doing better. She saw the NP and addressed the issues she was having. They are going to tweak a few things next time. It will still probably be bad but hopefully not as bad. She will tough this out until the next CT scan. If she continues to feel as horrible as she did, then she will ask for other options. If there aren’t any, well…..

12/9 – Eromero asked for prayers for his friend Lauren, as her gall bladder had turned on her.
12/16 Update – Lauren made it through gall bladder removal. They just vacuum it right out. Almost routine except when the gall bladder is attached to someone you care for. Praise God for healing, tender mercies, and blessings all!

12/15 – Washington Nearsider requests prayers. After taking what he believes was a principled stand, he was removed from his job as a federal agent after nearly 20 years of service. Please pray that he can find sufficient employment before his savings are exhausted, and that he can find the grace to provide a joyful Christmas full of gratitude for his two young children.

12/15 – DaveT sent an update. He is the retired gentleman that we prayed for in Oct-Nov, who was going through legal battles to save his home, for himself and his cats. He did receive enough contributions to his GiveSendGo to file a response and counter-claim, and was successful! Thank you to everyone who contributed prayers and donations! He is proceeding with one more necessary battle, which requires $400+ in filing fees, so his GiveSendGo is still open. Please email Annie’s Stew for the link to it, if you wish to contribute.

12/16 – neverenoughcaffiene posted prayers for the day: Berserker lost his BIL; they buried him yesterday. Debby Doberman Schultz lost her brother yesterday. Hadrian and her majesty lost Delilah yesterday.

12/16 – Sugar Plum fairy requested prayers for the family and friends of Katie and Grace, two sisters who died in a horrible car accident on 12/15. They were beautiful happy girls and full of life. They are from a small town where everyone knows each other, and it is a huge blow for the entire town.

12/16 – Legally Sufficient asked for prayers for a dear friend who needs them ASAP. No details yet, but it seems to be a medical event.

12/16 – Kindltot asked for prayers for comfort for her sister-in-law, Lonie, whose husband died of pneumonia and cancer.

12/16 – Paisley13 asked for prayers. The first is for their trainer, going through her 3rd bout of cancer. She is one of a kind. She’s been in the hospital and prayers for her family and her, especially if this is her time to be called home. The second is for dear BIL going through the first rounds of chemo. He and sis have a positive attitude but know there are days where they could use an extra prayer.

12/16 – Jim (in kalifornia) could still use prayers. His wife is in the hospital for a routine procedure to put in liver stents. It didn’t go well. She is on antibiotics. She is in a catch-22: she can’t get chemo until her liver is health enough, but the tumors are also damaging her liver. Jim had an abdominal bug and had to go to the ER, but he’s better.
12/27 Update – The doctor confirmed that his wife is going through liver failure. Her “liver” is huge and 90% composed of metastases. He has no estimate for how long she has.

12/21 – Skip would appreciate prayers for recovery for his mom. She had a mini stroke before Christmas. She got to the hospital and seems fine and no outward side effects. She should be in rehabilitation soon.

12/21 – Nurse Ratched asked for prayers for a rare commenter that she knows, whose mother is dying. She is in her 90s and had a good run. Please pray for peace and calm at her passing. She is at home and on hospice.

12/21 – NaCly Dog asked for prayers for the mother-in-law of his old boss, who went to hospice.

12/21 – PD asked for prayers for Nick, who was recently diagnosed with an inoperable tumor. He will undergo aggressive chemotherapy. Prayers are needed for strength for him and his son.

12/21 – Oddbob asked for prayers that his house in TX sells soon. They had to move to NE on short notice a few months ago, to help care for their granddaughter. They don’t have the resources to pay for rent and also the mortgage for very long.

12/21 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers again for Baby Lillian. She is back in the hospital with a hemoglobin issue. Baby Lillian is the great-niece of a member of her congregation.

12/26 – Anonosaurus Wrecks and Mrs. Wrecks could use some prayers. They had a terrible Christmas. Mrs. Wrecks took out the trash on Christmas Eve, and fell and broke her leg and her wrist. Then their daughter accidentally overdosed their dog with insulin. They had to take the dog to a super expensive emergency vet, but the dog is okay now. Mrs. Wrecks is still in the hospital because no pharmacies were open, so she couldn’t get any pain meds. She also needs special medical equipment.

12/27 – TecumsehTea requested prayers for a dear friend, Pastor Joe, who has a benign brain tumor that they have been watching. It has grown about ¾ of an inch in the past 6 months and needs to be removed. It’s in a tricky spot, making the surgery risky, but they can’t leave it for much longer. In the past 2 years he has dealt with a heart attack and prostate cancer, and now this. He has deep faith and trusts the Lord. His family is understandably anxious. Prayers for wisdom for the doctors, peace and comfort for his family, for continued mercy and healing for Pastor Joe.

12/29 – Captain Hate’s daughter sent word that Captain Hate had died. He had a steep decline over the past week. She sent the family’s thanks for their support.

12/30 – FenelonSpoke updated the Horde on their church organist, Jessie (age 95). She now has bronchitis. Prayers are much appreciated.

12/31 – Weak Geek and his family could use prayers. His father died on 12/26. He was 87. His passing was peaceful; he had been put on morphine for comfort care.

1/3 – Browndog asked for prayers. His PSA will be tested today, to see what’s up (or down). It’s been four years since he began this fight (#howwedoing).

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Oh, yeah. Blocking goggle-analytics has the front page loading in record time.

I wonder if they throw a request from a right wing blog into some sort of iterative loop using a random number delay.

Got up. Let the puppies out. Sat with them as they did their business. After a few minutes, they all came back inside. Made their breakfast and sat with them while they ate it. Made my coffee and Her Majesty's coffee. Puppies got rambunctious. Let puppies out again. Sat with them while they murdered one another. After they tired themselves out, brought them back inside. Finally had my coffee.

30 I have cute stories to tell about the kittens on the Pet Thread this p.m.

My boss is annoying the hell out of me. He'd asked for a couple of lists he wants to pass on to the chair of our funding foundation. I find the data, neaten it up, and send it to him. Back comes the response: "This is not what I asked for. The events list needs to be in order by date. And I don't want a schedule for the other, but a list. I don't understand why this hasn't been done."

"Well, why didn't you ask for that, then?" I didn't say. I pointed out that the first list *was* in order by date. Then I dredged up the other list as a Word document, changed all the abbreviations (building names, etc.), and sent him that. All of this during the last ninety minutes of work on a Friday.

I am so ready to retire.

Good Morning Morons. Once again we see the press falling over backwards to crap on Republicans while aiding and abetting illegal actions by Democrats. Desantis had said he would pardon Trump. Reporter for NBC asked him if he would pardon Biden. (both)..Trump is being constantly charged with made up crimes like the Jan 6 crap. Biden is charged with taking bribes from foreign governments. Desantis explained to the stupid reporter that they were not the same thing. Stupid reporter thought this was a “gotcha”.

62 ZH paywalled the article, but by their analysis, we lost 1.4 million full time jobs in Dec, replaced by about 800,000 part time jobs and a bunch of people taking second part time jobs. ____________

The city nearby installed what they call "flock" cameras. They're CCTV cameras that monitor various intersections for "stuff." They're billed as safety devices, not surveillance. To which I say; horseshit.

They should put them in the crime infested 'hoods in town if the powers that be are interested in "safety." *

*spoiler: they're not.

That is nuts. Something else that is nuts is what a client called me yesterday about yesterday. They had replaced the transmission on their 2017 truck, (Ford F250 I think) and they needed to connect it to the internet so the company that sent them the transmission could log on and program the transmission for the truck. WTF? I never want a vehicle like that. I'll drive what I've got until either it or I drop completely dead.

And another note about words, the second stanza of "Come Thou Fount" contains the phrase " Here I'll raise my Ebeneezer" which sometimes elicits guffaws from the confirmation boys ( you can guess what "raising my ebenezer" makes them think of ) and sometimes people want to know if it's related to Ebeneezer Scrooge. It is a reference to Samuel putting up a stone to commemorate the victory over the Philistines, and so here in the hymn it represents victory in conversion by the Lord

111 Older vehicles . . . I still miss my '03 Park Avenue, gone now these ten years, and my venerable W126 Mercedes 420SEL. In late '19 I spotted an '88 or '89 420SEL, dark grey over light grey, fantastic condition, at a dealer in Michigan, of all places -- a dealer with a huge indoor warehouse where the cars were kept. There were loads of pics of it, including the undercarriage, to show you there was no rust. I was really tempted, if I could have located a good local mechanic to look it over, to fly up, buy it, and drive it back down. What a grand road trip that would have been.

Then I got sick with what I still think was The Coof, and that idea flew away. When I checked a week later, the car had been sold. Darn.

I suppose that's my problem. I wasn't ready to retire. But in early 2020, no one was hiring and by the time things returned to "normal" I was 65 and realized no one wanted someone of my age.

I do some little stuff that I enjoy, get paid for and am well regarded for (somewhat to my surprise), but I'm aware that my career is now over, that I failed to be what I wanted to be and that the damage is irreparable. I now no longer have the energy or self-confidence to be industrious about striking out in a new direction.

Good morning, Wolfus,

I'm smoking some C and D Anthology 2023 in a half bent olive wood pipe. It's a comfortable pipe to clench between sips of coffee and the Anthology gets better with each bowl. I was able to snare five tins last week which should last for a while since I save it for an occasional treat.

Hope you're enjoying that Amphora full aroma. I always liked that blend back in the day. Sutliff offers a Match version of Amphora. I should check it out. Some of their other Match blends have been excellent.

189 Missus Muldoon retired a year before I did. We get along well in retirement. Typically we will start our day with coffee and a joint perusal of local and national news, sharing any items that catch our interest, laughing at badly written headlines, etc. We do a form of morning report (today is Saturday, Dec. 6, daughter is coming by around 10:00, I have a dentist appt. at 2:00, etc.), most days we will listen to a Bible study, lesson or recorded sermon together). That usually provokes a conversation. One or the other of us will fix breakfast. Then she starts on her projects/errands and I start on mine. The morning routine really is a nice way to start out.
It helps that we are best friends.

Very true. I had the sunset for my National Guard career all figured out: when my youngest finished school, I'd take a stat tour in Germany and we'd all enjoy touring Europe while the older kids kept the house up for us.

And then Covid came along, the vaxx mandate and I was forced out for being a refusnik.

But that allowed me to be there when my daughter and grandkids really needed me.

Whenever something bad or disappointing happens, ask yourself: What hidden good is behind this? It's weird how something as small as a jerk cutting you off in traffic can lead to hidden joy you would otherwise have missed.

The Amphora was not really expensive at Smokingpipes dot com. A plus is that the pouch does not have that blaring headline about "Nicotine Is Addictive" or "Smoking Is Deadly." In fact a lot of my tins and pouches have only small warning labels.

I like the Match versions I've tried: Carter Hall for one, and Walnut. The Match Prince Albert I bought a year or so ago is too strong for me -- whereas the original is not -- so I mix a pinch of it into other things so as not to waste it.

That must be nice. Sad to say, Her Majesty's one blind spot is that she's quite anti-clerical and she takes a very dim view of my return to my Catholic roots. We have a modus vivendi. She doesn't interfere with my going to Mass on Sunday or my Lenten observances and I don't discuss my faith. But it's still hard to say my prayers in some hole-and-corner way. I always ask for a softening of her attitude.

Used to drive me nuts when people would go to Napa or somewhere and get codes cleared. Then call because their vehicle is running like shit. Codes are clues for the mechanic. The first, to design and build a research aircraft with technology that reduces the loudness of a sonic boom to resemble that of a “gentle thump to people on the ground." The second, to fly the X-59 over select US communities to gather data on human responses to the sound generated during supersonic flight and then deliver that data to US and international regulators.

312 The visions in Ezekiel are where things start to get hopeful (even if it's hard to grasp) The scary part is where God pronounces Judgment; He says that Israel will face punishment and will suffer greatly until they are brought back to Righteousness. Then He names all the Nations around Israel and proclaims, if you delight in the suffering of my people, and scoff and take part, then your Nations will be erased from this Earth completely.

I used to try and get him to do something because he was driving my Mom crazy. He expected my Mom to retire after he did but my Mom was a professor at a State University and really liked her job so she taught for another 10 years. So my old man hit the bottle (harder) because he was lonely, bored and angry.

It was really sad when he died because everyone was pretty much relieved.

So if you are retiring please have some plans to do something other than to make everyone around you miserable.

341 I think, at least in the case of the Explorer, issues with the vehicle's software, code issues that result in weird behavior are not trapped by the OBD-II system and therefore can't be "read" by a code reader.

They're simply not there.

A more elaborate reader, like an app, might be able to find some sort of issue, but if the actual software is bugged (which is what I suspect) most, if not all, OTS readers are not going to help.

Even the dealership has challenges digging into the vehicles software. Ford, for what it's worth, probably spent less on the software coding than it did on the spare tire. Because all that money had to be used to promote the junta's preferred mode of transportation... the EV.

380 Life has phases, all of us have periods in our lives when we must change. As for me, I've been a student, a factory worker, a truck driver, a heavy equipment operator, a seafarer, tour guide, college professor, professional musician, even a waiter. Now all of that is in the rear view mirror. Retirement is the new phase, next stop the great beyond. We're all on that particular conveyor belt.

Otherwise, I do think it's possible if I had more time, I could drive slower and take more time getting where I'm going. I don't know though, places I want to see, I moved out this way to be closer to them. If I ever retire, I won't be doing any cross-country trips. Posted by: OrangeEnt at January 06, 2024 10:45 AM (Angsy)

Nah, not so.

My mechanic has a Snap-On code-reader/diagnostic tool, that's made EXACTLY to be used to gather data while driving. It can "read" the actual electrical impulses of each and every firing of every coil-pack and sparkplug, individually. And if one "waveform" is off, identify the offending part down to the replacement order number.

It'll so the same for every electronically governed part in the vehicle, too. Transmission, lighting (each tiny portion thereof), and etc. Your dome light LED has a quivering diode? It'll tell you.

Of course, it's a $795 instrument, so a bit of a hurdle for the home mechanic.

Fascinating to watch the data on it's screen during a test drive though.

410 Sometimes the sensors are actually seeing a problem.
Used to drive me nuts when people would go to Napa or somewhere and get codes cleared. Then call because their vehicle is running like shit. Codes are clues for the mechanic. There are ways to monitor and figure out stuff but it's cool to know if you should be looking at the MAF sensor or a down stream oxygen sensor.
Posted by: Reforger at January 06, 2024 10:05 AM (2arS9)

A code reader can tell you if that check engine light is alerting you to a real problem, or just some triviality. My '08 Suburban always shows a light because the charcoal canister for the evaporative emissions system is not completely airtight. It got busted when the truck was rear-ended by a Nissan pickup years ago. I mended it with hot glue, but it was never airtight after that. Zero effect on performance or fuel economy. Maybe one day I will find a good canister at the wrecking yard, but i won't lose sleep over it.

There was a neighbor who had a 5th-wheel camper, then a bus like RV. Every time he and his wife went somewhere they had something break on one of those. Sometimes it was severe enough that they had to have it towed... maybe 100 miles to a dealership or shop that could fix whatever was broken.

Since I've never had a camper/RV (or a boat) I will never buy one for "retirement."

Sometimes movies/teevee shows are metaphors.

In the first season of Walking Dead, they put all their hope in getting to the CDC, to get answers to what's going on.

When they get there, they are... disappointed. I'll post no spoilers, but just say it's hubris and the false hope of "science" and medicine that is on display.

I have been. She's also a diabetic (runs strongly in her family), but I'm letting it somewhat slide right now. She gets what she wants to eat (as long as she maintains her fluid limitations). Even now it doesn't feel entirely real to either of us.

455 I've lived in an Airstream and a Silver Streak. Did not move all that much although we had a job where we traveled a bit with the Airstream. It can be done if you are younger. The problem is that the trailers aren't designed for full time living. And it's best to have some sort of home base.

I considered it but I needed to have a house. Don't know how many years I have that I can travel.

And yes, they fired me and hired me back in a month after it went to hell. But there's only so much I can do. They fired the co-workers that got me back on so there aren't a lot left that I care about.

460 If you live somewhere with no rust, your best bet is a 98-04 Lincoln Town Car. Same mechanicals as the Crown Vic. Engine and trans likely to last 400-500k with maintenance. Just enough modern ish tech but still mostly traditional design. Handles fine, easily quick enough for normal driving, if you do mostly highway 23 MPG, mostly city 17 MPG. Comfortable as heck, and although people seem to think they are like the 70s yachts they are actually about the size of 70s midsizes and really not that much bigger than a modern Accord or Camry, maybe 6 inches. Certainly smaller than a modern F-150 or Silverado. They used to be pretty cheap for nice ones but I think people are figuring it out as over the last year or two the prices have climbed. 100k is nothing, what you are looking for is condition. Still priced significantly lower than a couple year old Corolla.
