First-World Problems...

Why do suburban drivers move over to the right side of the street and angle their cars to the right when making a left turn? Is this some sort of glitch in the matrix? Are they really convinced that the six inches of extra visibility to the left is going to make a difference?

Because as they do that they also block anyone from making a right turn from behind them. But they don't care about anyone else on the planet, so I guess that makes sense.

I was taught to make left turns from as close as possible to the lane marker. And not cut the corner...but that's a different rant.

Get off my lawn...and my street!

13 I typically pull left to make a left turn and have all my life. I would have thought it was crazy to ever do otherwise except now I've found one exception. My kids' school is on a two-lane road out in the country. At pick-up time, sometimes the number of cars waiting for kids exceeds what the school's parking lot can hold, so a line forms on said country road. If the people on the side of the street with the school move right for the right turn to the driveway and the people turning in from the opposite direction also pull somewhat right (for the left turn), there's a lane for people who are not picking up kids to pass through, rather than ending up with lines in both directions of mostly people who aren't picking up kids.

When we moved to California my wife and I had to take their stupid written test. No driving test. When we moved to Kentucky we simply turned in our CA licenses and were issued KY ones.

My son who live in TN never took drivers ed. Did take a written test (twice) before getting his license at 18 or 19. Didn't feel the need to get it before as mommy took care of everything.

Kids today, and young adults drive like they learned everything about motor vehicle operations from Mad Max.

Pulling up to a stop sign on a residential street, and there is a car from my right, turning left in front of me. Invariably drivers will cut across my stop line. I drive right at their driver side door and try to spook them. It's a hoot when their eyes get all big.

43 There's an exit from a Sam's Club in Austin that is two lanes wide. The right lane is straight or right turn. The left lane is straight or left turn. Most people coming out want to turn one way or the other. The left lane gets a protected turn light which is great unless you're stuck behind some bozo who wants to go straight and can't. Of course by the time that person gets a light and can go, you've missed your protected turn and get stuck for another cycle. Remarkably stupid traffic "engineering."

I'm pretty sure this is true and not just cranky-old-manism or confirmation bias on my part. Drivers have been getting worse. They pay less attention to their environs than ever, and don't know what to do with traffic signs. Especially at 4-way intersections with stop signs.

The "explicitly unprotected left turn" arrow seems to be a new thing. At least I hadn't seen it before a few years ago and now they're everywhere. As an aside, I remember the first time I saw a red left arrow after moving to CA in '88. It confused me because I didn't see how it meant anything different than a red circle. And it doesn't; it just means "don't go."

I think it's because the drivers originally came from localities which either never got snow (and a light dusting caused them to panic and drive 5mph) while many other drivers came from localities with months of snow and never seemed to reduce their driving speed in the interest of safety ... I was always a nervous wreck knowing both types of drivers were on the Beltway at the same time.

Law of red light tickets: if you are in the intersection when the light turns you are legal. The proper way to make a left turn against traffic is to be in the intersection. Being in the intersection does not obstruct other drivers and allows you to make the turn thus clearing the way quicker for other drivers.

There are a couple around here. Much better than the 4-way stops that used to be there. Flow of traffic is better. Unless there's an asshole who doesn't understand that "Yield" is not the same as "Stop."

However there are those that just drive right across them, leaving hubcaps, bumpers and other assorted trim parts strewn across it.

Back when I had to take drivers' ed it was made explicitly clear the the center turn lane is for making left hand turns off the road, not making left hand tuns on to the road. So, when making a left from a parking lot/sdie street/whatever you had to wait until traffic was clear in the lane you wants to get into and were not allowed to use the center turn lane (i.e.: the lane is for vehicles ALREADY on the road).
Many years later when I mover to a new state I found that the center turn lane was for whoever got there first, even using it as a merge lane, and people would drive down it for a quarter mile before merging into the lane on their right.

Now about the free for all u-turns they have here... Don't know how many times Ihave seen people doing u-turns at traffic lights when the light was red...

I have seen "Yield" signs at interstate on ramps more than a couple of state's even though the merge lane was more than adaquate to get lined up... So I have learned that if I get stuck behind some guy not using the accleration lane to get up to speed I get left ASAP so I don't get stuck by some a-hole hitting the brakes because he cannot merge.

218 Around here some "traffic engineer" came up with this solution to minimize fatal accidents at certain intersections, including those with lights; "J" turns. In order to turn left off a main road you go past the side road and make a "J" (U) turn and come back down on the other side of the main road and then turn right onto the side road.

And the removal of the traffic light means the fatal accidents are now "somewhere up the road" and not there.

The Mission were the guys who would drive around East Germany to see what the rooskies were up to. (Remember Major Nicholson getting shot and killed.) I have to assume the reason is that the localities are getting too much infrastructure money, and not enough maintenance money for the electricity. Also, few people are competent at properly handling a four way stop when the power is out.

Unfortunately, the engineers who are putting them in don't understand the physics of roundabouts. They only work when the traffic on all sides is roughly equal. I have a set of roundabouts near me that are on both sides of a highway frontage road. The crossover side of each roundabout obviously has no traffic to their left and don't wait, so the traffic exiting the highway backs up into the main lanes of the highway at rush hour. On the highway, one lane is moving at 70 mph and the other is at zero. They have killed at least two people over the last twelve months.

And when the population in the area started to go up the state was considering making it a formal highway and started closing the side roads going through the artery, but the leftist town didn't like the idea and instead got the state to install stoplights every few hundred yards on the artery bringing it to a crawl.

Saw movement to my right and...it was a deer. I could see it was trying to decide what to do so I prepared to break and...yep the deer decided to run right in front of my car at high speed and time it perfectly so that if I didn't break I would have hit it.

Somehow deer are dumber about cars then squirrels...

Another irritant is new vehicles automatically switch to high beams when they perceive no oncoming traffic. I have to manually turn that off each time. Deer are much less likely to freeze on the road if your brights are not on.

Right hand turns as bad if not worse, singing way out to the left before making the right turn.

It's the dingo brain coming through - they see something they want but are being cautious to make sure it is something they can take, so rather than turning direct to the target they cautiously and subconsciouly spiral in on it.

In an open field they would circle a dead critter three or four times while getter closer to make sure its not gonna jump up and get them.

Many moons ago, back when our granddaughter was in 1st or 2nd grade (she's a wife and mommy now --- how'd that happen? --- oh, I'm old), Mrs. Cop and the granddaughter are riding with me. We're trying to get home in a heavy snow storm.

Car with four teenagers pass us. Come across the same car a mile or two down the road, now in a ditch. Mrs. Cop asks if I'm going to stop. Nope, teenagers are fine and it's a life lesson for those idiots.

Traffic circles, properly designed, and suitable sited, can work wonders for easing traffic and reducing intersection accidents. They put one here in Apache Junction where Hwy. 88 crosses Superstition Boulevard. Used to be, you had to wait 5 minutes or more trying to cross 88. Now, it's rarely more than 20 seconds, if you have to wait at all. The roads cross at a 45 degree angle, and shoulder checking, if you are on Superstition, was literally a pain in the neck.

Northbound I-75 to Westbound I-70, the "new and improved" interchange ramp was designed with a too-small radius. Originally, there were no caution signs to reduce speed. Some poor dude on a motorcycle was going too fast and he rode right off the ramp -- splat after about a 100 foot drop. Then there were the tractor-trailers getting hung-up on the barrier wall (one over-turned and put a hole in the pavement.

After a couple years of that $h!t show, Ohio Department of Transportation finally put up a bunch of warning signs. Oh, they also made the barrier wall higher so now the trailers just ride up the wall instead of getting stuck.

338 Look up Ackerman Angle. For car steering at low speeds, a more efficient turn can be made by an initial turn in the opposite direction, making the thrust angle of the vehicle cross the centerline axis change to the oppisite side both quicker and a sharper turn angle.
