When I graduated college, I did so with honors. My school had various decorations for the graduation garb that reflected which honor you had (magna, summa, etc.). You ought to take a gander at law publications. Lawyers are shameless in ripping off language without attribution from cases and law review articles alike.
It is often that PhD students publish with their academic dissertation committee members and often they do the grunt work while the senior professor offers little or no work aside from putting their name on it. Same as any other guild system where seniority has its perks==the journeymen an apprentices do the grunt work while the master gets the glory. You see the same in the military btw.

No, its actually easy. Back in the early 90s there was a case where a paper came for peer review to a competitor and he showed it to his PhD student. He then rejected the paper and the student copied her work and published it as his. The woman whose work brought it up for years and when finally it was challenged the Student couldn't show any raw data and the whole thing blew up. The woman had left the field long before and much of it was hushed up.
There was another case where a minor professor published 50+ papers by copying one from a major journal and submitting it to a minor journal with little or no change. Again it took almost random chance for the hoax to be discovered.

I took an English II writing course in college. It was under a first year professor. It started off okay but the professor apparently didn't appreciate my lack of attentiveness and focus on the girl next to me. After receiving 90+ grades on my first few papers , I unexpectedly started to receive a lot lower going forward.
On the next paper which was a non-fiction technical assignment, I decided to plagiarize the entire paper just as a test. ( yes stupid) . I found a book on the subject in the library, copied complimentary sections and turned it in. I got the same low grade as previous. I was personally satisfied that it wasn't my writing and just took my lumps until the semester was over.

I disagree. Does it happen? I'm sure it does sometimes, but people in a field generally know who else is working in it, and keeps tabs on their papers. Key word searches make this easy, and that's before any kind of plagiarism-detecting software.
The fact that the people you cite were caught suggests it doesn't work very well.

Not required anymore under most recent revisions of the law as everything you submit to print is regarded as copyrighted by default unless you state otherwise. Read up on the various GPLs and it will teach you a bit of copyright law in and of itself as those GPL's are designed to offer users different rights to fair use of the work while retaining some ownership of the work itself.

Yes, it’s important to remember that Newton needed calculus in order to work on gravity. Leibniz apparently needed it (or thought he needed it) for clarifying human reasoning. Calculus is useful for a lot of things, and a lot of those things were coming of age in the 17th century.

Harvard is avoiding a lawsuit for wrongful termination by paying her off. It is common in the academic world to get rid of administrators who are foolish, controversial, or incompetent by returning them to their department where they have been granted tenure generally with slight or no pay cut.
But, the relationship is a chilly one in that department as the former leader is usually resented by the others (covertly if not overtly). My guess is that Gay goes into the world of NGOs, politics, or something like that in the long run.

There was a Supreme Court case, Feist, where one telephone directory company flat-out copied another company's directory and didn't violate copyright because it was a compilation of facts arranged in a "practically obvious" way. There was nothing creative embodied in the original phone book.

That get complicated when you are dealing with written or musical works. You should take a look the case of John Fogerty being sued by CCR rights holder Saul Zaentz for ripping off a CCR song that John wrote (Run through the Jungle) in his later Old Man Down the Road.
Things are rarely cut and dried in law because you cited a direct one for one copy but many derivative works from materials have been copyrighted and successfully defended. Fogerty won his case despite. In another, George Harrison lost his case for copyright infringement of My Sweet Lord and the Chiffon's He's So Fine. Jury found Harrison committed unconscious plagiarism which more or less was bullshit reasoning.
