Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | DEI heretics pay a price even when they are financing DEIWell, this new year is starting off much better than expected. It's not often that a schadenfreudey moment like the self-immolation of Harvard's Claudine Gay lasts an entire month, so by all means let's revel in it for another week. Let it roll over us like hot chocolate syrup on a vanilla ice-cream sundae. (I'm sure some ninny somewhere will think this imagery racist, unless they stop and think about it for a moment, which they won't.) It's been so much fun we almost ignored the new Jeffrey Epstein documents, which didn't hang themselves. Now on to MIT! Bill Ackman had earlier called on other CEOs not to hire Harvard students who blamed Israel for the Hamas attack. He then criticized Dr. Gay and two other college presidents over their congressional testimony regarding the acceptability of advocating the genocide of Jews at their schools. He helped start the ball rolling toward the resignation of Dr. Gay. Then the instances of plagiarism were found . . .
Ms. Long of Business Insider did not send anything to me. Fran McGill, who heads communications for us, received an email from Ms. Long at 5:19pm which he brought to my attention when he tracked me down around 20 minutes later. The email was about 12 pages long. Ms. Long said in the email that BI would be publishing its story this evening. They did so at 7:15pm. Note that they chose to send the email after sundown on Friday night to a family that celebrates Shabbat dinner together. And also note that they are attacking the Israeli wife of the protagonist in this situation. Think about that and think about why they chose to wait until 5:19pm. Now also consider why is it that Business Insider published this story. Probably because other news sources turned it down. . .But the NYT has reported that Business Insider reported it. That's what's important. There's an element of @realchrisrufo's strategy no one has picked up on yet. It's this: Almost nobody outside universities reads academic papers, so the papers radical activist professors write in which they defend absurd ideas don't get read by the general public. So... Leftist academics are free to use academic journals to advance their social and political goals in the academy and no one notices because no one outside the academy reads it. This dynamic allows leftist profs to make absurd claims on behalf of leftist dogma and pay no price.Paging Thomas Sowell Since no one outside academia reads these journals, activist profs could claim truth does not exist, everything is about power, men can become women, and other such wild claims, and the general public was unaware that academia had been hijacked by a political agenda. But.... Now @realchrisrufo has started a plagiarism war in academia. And you know what that means? It means people are now looking for plagiarism in academia, and in order to find plagiarism guess what they are going to have to do? That's right . . . they have to read academic journals. And when they read those journals they are going to find paper after paper denying objective truth, papers claiming racial identity matters more than facts, papers that claim lived experience is more important than evidence, and papers claiming children can pick their gender. What @realchrisrufo has done by starting the plagiarism wars is to get people outside academia to actually READ all of the insane nonsense that's being produced by activist professors. Now regular people, even those who hate Rufo, will be forced to confront the fact... that the universities have been hijacked by activists who are using the universities as a vehicle to advance the political and social goal of the left. It's brilliant. . . .There's more, plus responses, at the link. I cleaned up a couple of typos and added some emphases. There are reasons people hate Rufo. Think seriously about his goals.

Also, since we are on the subject of citation: I much prefer a footnote that is on the page itself instead of having to flip to the back of the book or document. It takes you out of the flow of the book and makes it harder to make notes if you are having to juggle all this shit.

Why is he called a whale? Big donations?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 06, 2024 11:39 AM (RSbhh) Sorry, I thought it was a term more general in usage. A 'Whale' is someone who buys a ton of content for a video game. They are usually the ones some games try to cultivate. It can be either cosmetic or substantive stuff, but the hall mark is how much they spend. For example, Star Citizen has ships (that are not even available yet) for the game that are thousands of dollars on their own. I think Star Citizen's development model is based entirely around whale cultivation (note the game is not even out yet, just in beta.) So in general, a whale would be someone who spends a large amount of money on something of dubious or only prestige levels of return. Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 06, 2024 11:44 AM (di6C2) 62

That's why people look at how many times a paper was cited by other papers - it's a way of weeding out the papers that no one ever read.
True. You are professionally evaluated by your h-index. There are lots of journals now that are there only to give a title where you can pretend you're publishing significant work. H-index helps to work around this. The h-index is an author-level metric that measures both the productivity and citation impact of the publications, initially used for an individual scientist or scholar. ...The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications. Warframe is probably the 'best' in being able to play without spending money (and you can generate the premium currency by farming in game items.) Path of Exile... you kind of HAVE to spend money on inventory space if you play for an extended period of time. BUT it is better than Warframe as far as the items being bought are not weapons or game affecting content. Both games have massive amounts of content. The 'best' of the free to play I have tried are probably Warframe and Path of Exile. BOTH are fairly repetitive though because that is inherent in the live service model.
Warframe is probably the 'best' in being able to play without spending money (and you can generate the premium currency by farming in game items.) I have never played a video game.
On my way to San Francisco in '77, we stopped for breakfast in Reno. It was OK. Right next to the cash register was a one-armed bandit. I put in the change, and we hit for just about the amount of the breakfast. That was my gambling career. Then, in Berkeley, I went into a Star Trek shop. They had one of the first active-player video games there, so early that it was coin-op. I had to get the proverbial shit-load of quarters -- ISTR it was $3.75. I fed in all those coins, and the computer did not come on. They would not refund the money. That was the end of my computer gaming career. I consider my life tens of thousands of dollars ahead, on this. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at January 06, 2024 12:15 PM (FCs/J) 177

I've not been able to NOT notice that casting has to have a POC (how I hate that phrase) in every frame. If a beloved and popular series is being relaunched, chances are it's because they need to up the diversity quotient, no matter the historical setting.
Posted by: All Hail Eris at January 06, 2024 11:38 AM Starting this year, I think, in order to qualify for Hollywood awards, any production has to fit a certain "diversity" requirement for the entire production: actors, behind the scenes workers, directors/producers, etc. It was an unofficial policy previously, but now Hollywood has made it official such that if you do not adhere to their diversity BS, you will be banned from consideration of any awards. Sorry, I thought it was a term more general in usage. I think Star Citizen's development model is based entirely around whale cultivation (note the game is not even out yet, just in beta.)
So in general, a whale would be someone who spends a large amount of money on something of dubious or only prestige levels of return. Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 06, 2024 11:44 AM (di6C2) Whales in Star Citizen? Oh, yes. Posted by: mrp at January 06, 2024 12:24 PM (rj6Yv) 202
In my STEM field when I was a PhD student I submitted an early draft of a paper to my advisor…. He absolutely raked me over the coals for one spot where I didn’t do proper citation. I thought he was gonna drop me, it was that serious. And that was only an early draft only 2 people looked at: he and I! In STEM it was serious…. If it’s the same now you could look a long time and not find plagiarism in STEM. There is also the issue that often the paper you’re writing will really only be understood by 10 people working in your narrow field

That's a factor, but IMHO it's more due to the move from well written and produced shows, to "reality" shows full of nothing but idiots acting like idiots. They're much cheaper to produce, and as long as you lack functioning synapses, are okay for awhile. However, even the mouthbreathers eventually get tired of them, and at this point, I doubt the networks even know how to make good shows anymore. One thing that might conceivably put a screeching stop to all the gender-bending and race-swapping rewrites of classic tales:
Make a grand epic about an illiterate peasant leading the armies of France against the English, but ending up burned at stake. But make the heroic peasant black, male, and gay. And call him a "sharecropper" instead of a peasant. Surely it's no coincidence that Joan of Arc's actual name in French is "Jean D'Arc", which sounds exactly like "John Dark"! We already have a name for the hero. How about casting? Is Jussie Smollett out of jail yet? No, such a movie (promised or actually made) wouldn't put a stop to the idiocy, but it would make people think. The one's capable of thinking, at least. Starting this year, I think, in order to qualify for Hollywood awards, any production has to fit a certain "diversity" requirement for the entire production: actors, behind the scenes workers, directors/producers, etc. It was an unofficial policy previously, but now Hollywood has made it official such that if you do not adhere to their diversity BS, you will be banned from consideration of any awards.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton -- Is that where Unusual Whales gets its name? Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at January 06, 2024 01:12 PM (63Dwl) I think they used the term "whale" in the movie, Wolf of Wall Street too. Which I only watched, just past the part where Margot Robbie gets nekkid. I mean, she looked magnificent, but I realized they were using a body double, and I was sorely disappointed. Caesar's Wife and I were in England about 10 years ago. On the radio they were interviewing a black woman who was playing Henry V. OK, actors are supposed to make you believe. It might be more of a stretch, but if you can pull it off, more power to you. So they asked her to say some of the St. Crispin's Day speech. It was awful. I could have done a better job. She clearly did not understand the context of the words she was saying, who she was speaking them to, and what they meant. A speech meant to be inspiring just came off flat. Id rather have been a-bed holding my manhood cheap than to be led into battle by that woman. The French would have slaughtered them.
