The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I’m always finding homeless stray animals. So it was typical for me,” Elizabeth Merriken

Quote II

"You don’t think of medical professionals doing this, but 10% of medical professionals divert drugs. 10%… That’s a lot." Dr. Robin Miller

Not your typical motorcycle accident fatality.

Police in Kenya have recovered the body of a man believed to have been attacked by a lion while he was riding a motorcycle near a national reserve in the south of the country.

Officers were notified by community members of an abandoned motorcycle along a road near the Marere forested area near the Shimba Hills National Reserve in Kwale.

I did not have that ending on my bingo card.

Feel free to make a buck or two off of Mickey Mouse.

It’s finally happened: after nearly a century, Mickey Mouse has slipped off Disney’s copyright leash. The first versions of the iconic cartoon character, seen in Steamboat Willie and a silent version of Plane Crazy, enter the public domain in the US on January 1st, 2024. (An early version of Minnie Mouse is also fortunately included.) There’s still a complicated mess of protections around Mickey, but today is a moment public domain advocates have awaited for decades — and there are plenty of other exciting new entries as well.

Duke Law School’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain, as usual, has a roundup of prominent works whose copyright protections lapse in the US today. The list includes sound recordings from 1923 and works in other media that were published in 1928. Among other things, that covers:

I understand frustration with American Airlines. But, it still is no reason to be a Genius Award Winner.

‘They’re killing me’: Man restrained by passengers with duct tape during meltdown on flight to Miami

MIAMI – A man had an apparent meltdown on a flight that was heading to Miami Saturday morning and it was all caught on camera.

According to a source, the passenger was set to board American Airlines flight 9948 at 10 p.m. Friday from Rio de Janeiro to arrive at Miami International Airport early Saturday morning when he was heard screaming for “help” and “they’re killing me” in Spanish

1 I don't know what my true love's obsession with poultry is, but I finally resigned myself to it when the seven swans showed up yesterday. They barely fit in the bathtub, so I hawked some more of the gold rings and rented a small farm to keep the pear trees, partridges, turtle doves, French hens, calling birds, geese, and swans. I thought I was ready, and I was lucky, in that, besides a nice big pond, there's an old barn, which was perfect for the eight milk cows she sent today. The milkmaids didn't object too much to sleeping in the hay loft. But, if we've moved on from avians to mammals, I dread what may be next.

>>Now that version 1 of Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, the AI can generate pictures of Mickey, Minnie and Pete from 1928.

The copyright is for the Steamboat Willy Mickey Mouse, which was a black and white, pale imitation of the current Mickey Mouse.

I already see the AI is generating non-black and white renderings, with red colored pants and colored shoes.

Disney is going to sue the pants off of the people making these renderings as infringing.

They are going to argue that any depiction other than the exact steam boat willy representation is infringing and they will more than likely win.

Sucks, but that's the way that's going to go down.

I complained to Amazon and asked for a replacement part. But...the world doesn't do replacement parts any more so they sent me a new one. A whole new bike.

They asked me to return the original bike, but the packaging was cheap and there was no way I could get it back in. So...I told them I'd need a new box and...they said don't worry about it.

I felt kind of bad but then gave the bike with the crack to a friend. And as I suspect they couldn't have resold the bike it was probably for the best. But...what an odd odd world we live in right now.

And in a country with so, so many junkies, a nontrivial number of those people are going to be junkies, no matter what. Of course there's a lot of junk theft. Or "diversion" as appears to be the industry's euphemism for it.

It really depends on what you want to do, if you just need a solid pc to surf, watch video and run general productivity apps, then you can get a refreshed HP SFF i7, 16gb ram, 1TB computer for under 300 bucks.

About 6 months ago, I picked up 4 of these from Amazon for various roles in my home network setup.

They are, pound for pound the best bang for the buck.

Sadly, even FM radio was being run by "program managers" by then, and they played that crap on an endless loop, it seemed.

NOW, decades later, I can appreciate it as music. But, then? It was an instant spin of the dial to something else... and the "other station" was likely playing Waterloo or such, at the same damn time.

We have about 70 inches so far. That's well above average for the last few years, but I remember snow like this in the 1960's so not unheard of. It got damned cold last week, like not above zero, which is a bit early. Usually don't get that until February, but who knows? Solar minimum seems to be working its magic.

Not so much. I mean, of course, please don't give your kid some gay white millennial fake-o "name." It's horrible. It's lamer than black people naming kids Ty,'rod or Donflavious.

But no matter what sissy name you give your fruity kid, he won't get his ass kicked, as in days of old, and become stronger for it.

I think one of the main reasons the monster babies have grown so bloody minded is that they've never received or thrown a solid punch. They have no context for violence outside of carefully constructed media products that glorify it without showing the consequences. You can see it in their dead little fearful eyes when you talk to them - even the middle aged monster babies. They've never experienced it.

Somewhere along the line, children quit fighting. It's weird and unnatural.

Understand, it is NOT Mickey (in any form) that went out of copyright. It is Steamboat Willie that went out of copyright. This means you can make all the copies you want of Steamboat Willie and sell them on eBay, or modify it without adding value (for derivative works) and sell it, and there's nothing they can do.

Mickey Mouse, himself, is a trademark and you can't make stuff with him in it or anything that might be confused for him. At least not without a license from Disney.

I expect there is a limit to how light you can make a bullet, since air resistance is a function of the projectile's shape and cross-sectional area. Bullets too light will rapidly lose speed due to aerodynamic drag.

329 Yup, the thing in the day was that only rich people could afford carpets. So in the 50s/60s, when carpeting textiles became affordable for the middle classes, they all wanted it as a status symbol. Then another generation passed, and people realized that carpet is awful unless you're actually rich AF and have maids, and no longer wanted it except maybe in bedrooms, and paid to have it removed/replaced.

Do you think hookers ever need the help of sales consultants? I don't mean the "$20 bucks, same as downtown" ho, I mean the high priced call girls. Like what do they do when sales are down? Do they get an outsider that can construct a 12 point customer service and sales plan to boost flagging sales?

Thing is? you could say that about ANY group that is overplayed. I can't stand the Rolling Stones... why? Early 80's, Norfolk VA, they played in concert there, and ALL the F'N Rock stations did 'Stonetober'... where every other song, was a Stones song.

Gloria Knowlan was 86 at the time of her death 12 years ago. A small quantity of ashes from her cremated body are to be in one of 250 memorial capsules set to be launched into space later this month..

Launch organizers are hoping the rocket carrying the capsules will wind up approximately 330 million kilometers (205 million miles) from Earth, roughly past the orbit of Mars.

The remains or DNA samples of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, his wife, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, and Original Series stars Nichelle Nichols, DeForest Kelley and James Doohan also are expected to make the trip.

Their final journey will take place through American company Celestis Inc., which has offered what it calls “memorial space flights” for more than two decades.

The other really big thing is you don't have to keep refinishing carpet. You have to sand and re-seal hardwood every so often, and an generation of older folks who had those floors decided to carpet them over to eliminate that chore and receive the other advantages you list. That was when "wall-to-wall" became a thing, rather than various rugs placed all over a floor (which required being taken out and beaten every so often - a BIG chore).

Hardwood floors then weren't a symbol of prestige, they were just a laborious chore.

You running Windows? I don't know if the clock business is anywhere in the new settings thing. Open up control panel, select "date and time", and you can change it there.

Well, a cartoon mouse wearing high heels, anyway.

Even back then, Disney was a little weird.

LOL!

Garden gnomes have a lot of pent-up frustration. It would enjoy that.

If I were La-a, I would backslash mom. And then I would ampersand. That should put mom in a deep comma for the rest of her life. The punctuate is the punk you get - period!

The following link is the story of a friend of mine, who was similarly born extremely premature, and is blind as a result. He told me, "The last two organs to develop are the lungs and the retinas. I'm glad they saved my lungs. They could not save my retinas."

He sings with me in the Tabernacle Choir.

It troubles me. I join Costco 2B "guarded" because, everywhere is rampant theft.

This apartment block is Half Empty now,
frequent evictions. At the bus stop, a nice
man said his area of homeowners
has many, losing homes. I Remember
seeing Legal Notices in WaPo,
huge section, long ago. I guess, various

Don't know where.
Many formerly staid spots

a sort of Gold Rush roughness?

I always thought I could do

Amazing Generation.

In Closing: fully retired,

433 That "Lions at the Biker" story?
I have a neighbor that moved here from South Africa, his father was visiting this summer and I invited them to go with me to the Wauseon Antique/classic motorcycle races and Flea market. They said they had never gotten into the "Motorcycle thing" it wasn't big in Africa, too dangerous. I said "Bad Drivers?" they said noooo..."distances are really far there, wild open country, and anything smaller than a Land Rover looks like prey to the big cats and hyena, rhinos and elephants don't like the noises, and cape Buffalo REALLY don't, the whole herd will charge a motorcycle or pedestrian....when your bike breaks down(and eventually EVERY bike will break down), being on foot in that country is a death sentence, In a car/truck you at least have some shelter...and can carry enough guns and ammo to hold out until someone else drives by. Can't carry enough Gun on a bike"
