Damnit, the meme in taxation would have been so good had the point of federalism been emphasized. (Some states are far worse than others.)
And yet again, we should expect and demand the same efficiency of spending from our governments that we do from Apple or Samsung, but we refuse to do that. Hence (in part ) stupid high taxation. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at December 29, 2023 10:25 PM (8sMut) 59

"I ain't did nuthin."
____________ This is a useful term. It can be used in various situations that result in negative consequences. Aunt Mazie tried to cross the street with a cast and crutches while I went to grab a coffee. I didn't tell her to attempt that. "Ahem...I ain't did nuthin." Of course, using the term "I ain't did nuthin," doesn't automatically exclude you from consideration of those consequences. And, let's face it, just because you espouse "I ain't did nuthin," doesn't necessarily mean that you "ain't did nuthin." Some people do all kinds of shit and then keep a straight face while looking you in the eye and exclaiming, "I ain't did nuthin." Posted by: Orson at December 29, 2023 10:42 PM (dIske) 101
A mind experiment.
Posit that Trump restrains his basic instincts & acts normal for the next 11 months, until election day in Nov., 2024. Let me define my terms: "restrains his basic instincts" means at least 100 different things he needs to clam up about, but chief among these are talking about the 2020 election; talking about revenge/retribution/"being a dictator for just one day"; attacking his political enemies by NAME, enemies whom most voters don't know from Adam; & punching down at political & journo midgets. "acts normal" means talking about a return to normalcy; a chicken in every pot; jobs, jobs, jobs!; shrinking the national debt; increasing home ownership; restoring America's strength internationally; and taking Ben Carson as his VP. If Trump did these things & if Biden is the DEM nominee, we're talking about a 1964-style landslide, only for the GOP this time, aren't we? I already SAID it was just a mind experiment, because Trump gonna Trump! Posted by: mnw at December 29, 2023 10:44 PM (NLIak) 102

Chicken fried steak, done right, is one of the masterpieces of roadside diner lore. If you don't have a life, & you therefore read all the polls with a microscope just like I do...
"Undecided" and "Some other candidate" (i.e., other than Biden or Trump) are currently at about 12-13% combined. These are voters who are SCARED by the thought of 4 more years of Biden, but who can't stand Trump. The majority of these voters voted for Biden last time, so my greatest concern is that they may "come home" to Biden in '24. Third party candidates ALWAYS fade as election day gets closer, so RFK, Jr. is not the answer here for my concerns about that yuuge lump of "neither of the above" voters. If Trump would just moderate himself, these voters may be persuadable. Trump has the nomination in the bag, so he has little to gain by throwing MAGA red meat to his core constituency. >>Well, it happened. A Ford just displayed a BSOD: Automobiles are inherently disposable commodities, it's just all of the tech they are putting into them have taken a 15-25 average life-cycle and is shortening it to 10-20. For instance, the wizbang full dash digital display in the new Wranglers is most certainly not going to be available in 20 years if you need one. A lot of cars have adaptive cruise control, parking senors, proximity sensors, remote entry, push to start, the radio head unit is integrated into the security system of the car, etc. All that tech that goes into that and the OEM parts it takes to drive that is never going to be maintained by the manufacturer and the the aftermarket is going to be extremely selective with what they will support. We very well may be seeing the nadir of the automobile industry. Posted by: Thomas Bender at December 29, 2023 11:27 PM (XV/Pl) 180

Automobiles are inherently disposable commodities, it's just all of the tech they are putting into them have taken a 15-25 average life-cycle and is shortening it to 10-20.
If some company made something like a 55 Chevy out of modern steels, insulated it as they can do now, used a circa 2000 tech FI V8 that had about 240 hp and got 25 MPG on the freeway they would be able to sell it for around 10-15k, it would last 250-300k on average, and they couldn't build them fast enough. That's why the car companies never fought government auto regulations. Well, my new phone arrived today, and it actually works. It is a Unihertz Titan Pocket, which is a smartphone with a real QWERTY keyboard. It runs Android 11, but apparently can be rooted to run Lineage OS, which eschews all the evil Gurgle stuff.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia's phone at December 30, 2023 12:38 AM (n7rxJ) Even though in 2016 she was jerking around like Jeffrey Tubin on a zoom call, nothing will ever happen to her. She is literally too big to prosecute. Biden is a dolt, always has been, with a craptastic family to match, which makes him easily disposable. Cankles is extremely shrewd, make no mistake, and I'm sure has major files of dirt on just about everybody (just like J. Edgar did). She's shrewd like a snake in the grass holding a knife in one hand to stab you in the back and a gun in the other to make sure the two bullets in the back of the head are ruled 'suicide'. Hey Debby. Understand you lost a family member recently. Hope you are doing well. It's even more difficult at theses times. I lost my Dad on Thanksgiving day and buried Mom Christmas week.
Big doings at the house tomorrow, family Christmas party. Probably 50 to 60 folks, all immediate family. Bonus is a bunch of toddlers and a couple of babies. I usually hide in a corner but its fun to watch. Have a good New Year. Posted by: javems at December 30, 2023 01:05 AM (8I4hW) 305
