The Morning Report — 12/19/23

US-Spiel.jpg

Good morning, kids. Again, we have a story that with everything else going on will get lost in the sauce, but it's nevertheless yet another indicator of our national decline. Japan's Nippon Steel is going to buy US Steel for $14.1 Billion, pending stock holder approval.

For those of a certain age, the name US Steel and what it represents, and in sad truth once represented, was iconic. When Hyman Roth crowed to Michael Corleone "We're bigger than US Steel!" that meant something. The irony in the sale is that US Steel was arguably among, if not the single most important industry that beat Japan, along with Germany and Italy in the Second World War. It supplied the raw materials to produce every kind of weapon imaginable not only for our armed forces but for the British, the Soviets and every other ally.

Today? What does America produce? Mostly self-hating, braindead "graduates" with multi-colored hair, tattoos, piercings and worthless degrees in worthless subjects, ready to inflict perversion, Marxism and Marxist perversion on us while serving up our heads to the Religion of Peace peaceniks and their rusty hacksaws. In any case, as the degenerates in Congress who run the show are hot and horny to rush us into World War 3 in Ukraine, the Chi-Coms take one look at Joey Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants and the tin-pot Claudine Gays posing as the Joint Chiefs of Staff and are itching to pull the trigger on Taiwan. Hell, they've already launched a serious cyber attack on us with impunity.

Meh, they've been doing that for years with zero response from us, along with things like TikTok, the Confucius Institutes, bribery and graft of not just Yum-Yum Swalwell but dozens of others up to and including the Bidens, and total asymmetric warfare on all fronts with the intent of destroying us from within.

Even if we wanted to respond to the Chinese, how are we going to do it without an industrial base – an industrial base that was shipped overseas, mostly to China? I saw an article (wish I copied the link) that stated it would now take us well over 100 years, if not longer, to achieve the same industrial output we achieved between 1941 and 1945, in order to produce enough weapons and ammunition to meet a ChiCom attack.

Aside from being bereft of heavy industrial capacity, we lack the skilled tradesmen, machinists and workers as well as the brain power to even begin to pull off the beginnings of a rebirth of what once was. Remember, the Rust Belt's been the Rust Belt for nearly 40 years if not not longer. When the Japanese signed the surrender document on the deck of the USS Missouri, Detroit was the third most prosperous city in the entire world. What does the name "Detroit" conjure up today? Ditto US Steel? Mega-ditto USA?

I suppose it's a small consolation that the company now is owned by an ally and not like everything else the ChiComs. Of all people, John Fetterman was up in arms over the deal, mostly from the union angle, but of course he represents Pennsylvania which still is home to whatever steelworker constituency remains in the country (as an aside, you wonder how many people get what the logo of Pittsburgh's NFL franchise means). Yesterday, in the Stacey Matthews/Legal Insurrection link about Fetterman, there was this observation:

Fetterman’s stances have had some conservative influencers suggesting he has more or less turned into one himself. I don’t really see it that way. Though maybe not a hardcore woke progressive, he’s still a staunch Democrat. He’s pro-abortion, pro-Big Labor, pro-“tax the rich,” pro gun rights restrictions, and is soft on crime. But the fact that Fetterman’s been more right than left on Menendez, illegal immigration, and Israel as of late is certainly welcome all the same.

A commenter on one of the threads noted that maybe Fetterman is on to something. Just to clarify, I am not a Fetterman booster, but merely pointing out salient facts about his stances on the issues, irrespective of what's going on in his mind and/or lump. These days "tax the rich" is not necessarily a Leftist-Progressive stance, insofar as given what the corporatists and their fascist leaders in government have done to the middle class over the past several years. Ironic that "Occupy Wall Street" has come full circle in that the wealthiest among us are the biggest supporters of the Democrats and the destruction they have wrought.

The 10 most expensive zip codes by median home value, which accounted for just 0.02% of the population in 2020, were responsible for 7.6% of this year’s donations to the Biden campaign and the Biden Victory Fund, which are the primary committees used by the president’s reelection effort, according to data from the United States Census Bureau and the FEC. The roughly 81,000 people living in those zip codes donated 311 times more to Biden than would be proportionate to their share of the population.

The residents of America’s 10 most expensive zip codes donated a total of $7,519,474 to the Biden campaign and the Biden Victory Fund this year, or roughly $930 per person, according to FEC and Census Bureau records. Median home prices in these zip codes range from $4.25 million in Rancho Santa Fe, California, on the low end, and up to $7.95 million in Atherton, California, on the high end, according to the Times. The median price of a house in the United States was $412,000 as of September, according to Forbes.

Democrats have been bleeding working-class voters since 2016, though have made up their losses by appealing to higher-income voters and college graduates, according to Axios. Working-class congressional districts have begun electing more Republicans to represent them, while Democrats have started picking up wealthier districts, Axios reported. Democrats represented nine of the 10 wealthiest congressional districts as of 2022.

Biden has portrayed himself as a champion for the working class, leaning into his purported blue-collar roots and juxtaposing himself with former President Donald Trump. “I view this as a campaign between Scranton and Park Avenue,” Biden said during a CNN town hall leading up to the 2020 election. “All that President Trump could see from Park Avenue is Wall Street. All he thinks about is the stock market,” he continued. “How many of you all own stock in Scranton? Not a whole lot of people own stock.”

Biden campaign co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg said the president raised more than $15 million during a weekend of fundraising earlier this month in wealthy Los Angeles neighborhoods that was focused on courting high-dollar donors and members of Hollywood’s social elite, Deadline reported. . .

. . . Just 10 select wealthy zip codes were responsible for 11.7% of donations to Biden’s reelection effort this year. These zip codes spanned wealthy Californian communities like Beverly Hills, Atherton, Los Altos, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, San Francisco and Palo Alto. They also included zip codes in New York City and Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Scranton's not on that list. Nor is Pittsburgh (though Pittsburgh "donated" 110% of its ballots to Biden in 2020 and no doubt will repeat that next year). Nor Gary, IN where what's left of US Steel's massive blast furnaces stand, nor Detroit nor any other place where the American blue collar worker once reigned supreme. Ditto Main Street with its now virtually extinct mom-and-pop shops.

And as we consider the question of what does the name and logo of US Steel conjure up, the same can also be said of Harvard University.

“I don’t mean to laugh about it, but this is insane. You have somebody who’s a complete failure, who embarrassed the university, who cost them a billion dollars, who gets caught plagiarizing, and they’re going stand with her…. Maybe they think their brand can’t be permanently tarnished because it’s Harvard. Well, you know what? The people who branded Bud Light thought the same thing, and they found out differently.”

Nothing lasts forever. But things that we expected to last for a very long time have been intentionally sabotaged, hollowed out from within and ultimately destroyed. Like the United States of America.

I'm ambivalent about the US Steel sale. Japan, Inc and Toyota have been very good (and fair) trade partners with the US. I think it might be in the long term interest of US Steel employees to embrace the sale, but I doubt they will.

If a company is looking to get sold, it's probably because they're tired of the fight, which is not always in the best interest of the workers.

41 Covid Redux

*******

In years past, we determined how many people in the U.S. got influenza by determining the percentage of positive flu tests in patients at clinics and ERs and then trying to project that percentage onto the general population, i.e. we guessed.

Because NOT EVERYBODY GOT TESTED!

This needs to happen with COVID. One of the biggest fallacies of the COVID scare was that more testing would decrease the transmission via contact tracing.

The Media are Lying, Pope [Fiction] Francis Did Not Approve Priests Blessing "Same-Sex Relationships"

____________

As someone has pointed out, these Vatican dicta are like legal documents that have to be read very carefully to determine what can and cannot be done.

The problem is that by the time they get down to the parish level, they may end up meaning something very different. For example, Communion in the hand wasn't intended to be generally allowed. Now for all intents and purposes you're no longer allowed to kneel and take the Host on your tongue.

And I doubt most parish priests are smart enough or willing enough to take the time to learn the subtleties of this document or to consult with a canon lawyer to determine what they can and cannot do.

So, once again, what the Vatican intended and what happens at the pastoral level are going to be two very different things.

Which is, of course, nonsense. The real answer is one of two possibilities:
1. A hell of a lot less time than that
2. Never

If there were to be a major war and we are able to survive it as a country for the first year, we would find out the answer. "It would take a century" is static analysis based on status quo. Would the status quo change during a major war? Would we scrap the environmental regulations and zoning regulations, for example? Would graft be contained to allow things to move quickly? Would we annex foreign assets? Would we forcibly merge, say, the Canadian and Mexican industrial systems to feed the war machine?

Lots of variables. But status quo assessments of a century are irrelevant - the status quo changes or we fall long before then.

Uhm, Dick Pills and maniacs, mostly maniacs.

There really is nothing to talk about, the American experiment has been over for quite some time.

I've harped on it for the last couple of days, but in the Junta's first term, they will have let in illegal aliens that totals in excess of a quarter of the black population and double the Jewish population of America.

This is going to literally transform the country overnight.

And it really doesn't matter if we win the next election, they will simply wait it out or subvert it until they take control again, undo everything that was done, and begin the destruction again.

The election of The SCOAMF was the catalyst for fundamental transformation, and that's exactly what we got.

>>If there were to be a major war and we are able to survive it as a country for the first year, we would find out the answer. "It would take a century" is static analysis based on status quo.

It might not take a century, but it would take a lot longer than you would imagine.

The people and drive to build, say, an Empire State Building in a year has long passed from this earth.

And with roughly half the country composed of maniacs, I would suspect there would be a sizeable bit of resistance.

83 Aside from being bereft of heavy industrial capacity, we lack the skilled tradesmen, machinists and workers as well as the brain power to even begin to pull off the beginnings of a rebirth of what once was.
++++
There is another thing we used to have but don't anymore, and is a serious obstacle to rapid industrial expansion: obsolescence.

During WWII, we had been an industrial nation for a while and there had been much progress - out with the old, in with the new. Much of that old stuff was still physically present, though - often under oiled tarps out back. It *could* be - and was - put back into service fairly quickly. Slap up a building, haul in the old machinery, get it running, and start turning out canon and rifles and truck frames. It wasn't high-precision or efficient (by the standards of the day), but it could get the job done.

We no longer have obsolete equipment. Most of it got sold during the global reindustrialization. Too old and slow for us, but the Japanese or Koreans or Germans could use it.

The value of a deep well of obsolete equipment is difficult to overstate when it comes to increasing production on impossible timelines during war.

Trump and the Republicans need to start referring to Bidenomics as Democratenomics.

Biden's policies are Democrat policies and voters seem to think that if they insert a different Democrat they'll get a different result.

Not only do we need to win the presidency, but we need to win down ballot too.

161 > There is another thing we used to have but don't anymore, and is a serious obstacle to rapid industrial expansion: obsolescence.
_____________

Much of our technology is designed with 'built-in obsolescence.' But unlike days before most of the stuff is throw-away. Apps don't run, the battery can't be recharged or won't hold a charge and in some cases can't be replaced. The quality of the TV picture has improved and the SteamDeck doesn't work with old, non-4K screens or whatever.

Some of this (a lot actually) is being built in to cars, trucks, appliances, etc.

Yet... I refuse to toss certain things as they may be obsolete, but still useful in a pinch. But seldom are those things based on silicon tech.

167 "Conservative" Catholics, that is those who follow doctrine and adhere to the biblical teachings of our Lord don't leave. They stay, they prosper in the Truth and they fight.

We all sin, every one of us and Jesus forgives our sins if we ask him and are sincere in our intentions. He knows that. Jesus also accepts us, each and ever one of us and it's up to us if we let him in. Furthermore, Jesus said "go and sin no more". There are many instances where the Lord states similar things. He did not say, go and deliberately live in sin against my teachings and you'll have my blessing. While that blessing is always there for each and every one of us, to defy Him, and then simultaneously ask for his blessing while knowingly and deliberately living in sin cannot be reconciled. That's one reason why the Pope's thinking is almost apostasy, but also fallacy based on the Gospels. It goes back to the Jesuit's extremely flawed thinking about "love" and how that was incorrectly applied as being superior to all things.

178 Goes to show you the insane, fantasy corporate valuations we have today.

Carnegie sold US Steel to Morgan for $491m (~18b in 2023 dollars), so a bit more than the valuation today. But of course, it was a much bigger global industrial player then, and it wasn't a lot more.

That deal made Carnegie the richest man on earth in 1901.

By contrast, a minor automaker (Tesla) is "worth" 790b, and a cab company that just drives real cars that aren't toys around (Uber) is "worth" 127b. And an actual, major automaker that makes those real cars (Ford) is "only" "worth" 48b.

The US economy is a bullshit shellgame.

That's a bit different from what I mean. At the consumer level, "planned obsolescence" is a way to waste the customer's money and get more of it. But *industrial* obsolescence is not the same thing. A machine that's been retired from service because tool changes take several minutes and the new machine has a robotic carousel that can change tools in two seconds is still a good machine - it's just slow.

There wasn't a great market for some of that stuff before, especially bespoke tooling created by, say, a car manufacturer. As a result, a lot of it sat around. Too good to throw away, but no good way to sell it. The postwar global reindustrialization created a market for that stuff, so we sold it. Outside of war, that makes sense. During war, it sucks the big one.

Heck I even remember Colin Powell saying: We’re gonna cut them off and we’re going to kill them. A very warlike, warrior thing to say and never was too impressed with Powell but he led a lethal military. Nah…. Sadly I think we have very few of those warrior types left at the higher ranks especially. Part of Obama’s fundamental transformation was hollowing out and politicizing the military

It's inflation. We've been printing money for more than 15 years and repressing interest rates for closer to 25. That money has to go somewhere. The funny money that didn't get absorbed into trade flows went into tradeable assets. There's been massive inflation for the past 15 years, you just have to know where to look for it. My Rust Belt was being called that in the early 1970's. We used to point out that to make rust, you need water, and those yelling the loudest did not have that. They still do not. "Rust Belt" is one of those tells like Working Class -- it shows you have swallowed the commie line, but the hook is stuck in your throat.

US Steel went to war with John F. Kennedy and "lost." He called them "sons of bitches," in those exact terms. You couldn't give that industry away 50 years ago. It has taken all this time to salvage something worth a $14 billion sellout bid. I imagine their managers are pretty damn proud of themselves for building it up to this point. Yeah, those "valuations" speak to massive inflation, fer sure. But they also speak to the financialized paper-chase scam that is the modern stock market. Are we supposed to honestly believe that Tesla is "worth" 16x Ford?

Ridiculous.

When my manufacturing facility was terminated half the equipment got loaded onto a ship headed to somewhere in South America. The oldest stuff, which was really old. The newer stuff someone nearby picked up for a pittance.

It took generations to build that manufacturing plant into something of high value but only one act of the Senate to destroy it.

🚨VICTORY!!!🚨
I have WON the J6 civil case against me by the corrupt, lying, leftist Soros-funded DC nonprofit lawfirm Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (@LawyersComm
). Over 2 years ago I was served in a civil lawsuit by 8 black and brown Capitol Police officers whom I’ve never met, had no contact with on J6, and whom I was not even within proximity of.

They sued me under the KKK Act, alleging that I engaged in a white supremacist attack on black and brown police officers, that I caused their “injuries” (which included being pepper sprayed, and becoming “exhausted” and conspired to encroach on their civil rights.

Almost every detail and allegation against me was a lie. In fact I’ll say: a KNOWN lie.

Knowing that I committed no violence on J6, and didn’t encourage anybody else to either, this lawsuit alleged that I “violently” breached the barricades of the Capitol and proceeding to attack police officers- including the plaintiffs.

The case entered discovery, where we gathered evidence that conclusively showed that none of these officers were even on the side of the building I was on during my brief time on Capitol grounds

The case entered discovery, where we gathered evidence that conclusively showed that none of these officers were even on the side of the building I was on during my brief time on Capitol grounds. One of the plaintiffs was in Maryland at the time I was there.
This case cost me well into 6 figures to defend, and hundreds and hundreds of hours of my time- which is, of course, the whole point.
The left has weaponized our legal system, turning Democrat majority districts into a playground where they can abuse the process to harm those who get in the way of their political agendas.

But this case was even too preposterous for the DC courts, and after years of fighting-

I have won.

This is a much needed victory for truth, for decency, and for even a shred of restoration of our faith that justice still exists within corners of our legal system.
I thank you all who helped support me through this battle. Your support got me through- and my victory is your victory.

Please share this victory with everyone you know, and God bless you all.

295 Not much reporting is coming from the battle lines in Gaza, because the IDF prefers it that way; but there was one darkly amusing story that came out yesterday. In Shejiya, a neighborhood in the heart of Gaza City, there was an iron statue of a huge fist rising above a captured APC, commemorating an incident in 2014 when Hamas was able to kill 7 IDF soldiers with an IED on that spot. Yesterday the Golani Battalion, of which the 7 dead soldiers had been a part, posted video of them capturing and demolishing the monument.

and it's a reminder for those of us in this country - Monuments are destroyed when an invading force takes over and wants to demonstrate their new found dominance.

340 On the long list of things that the GOPe hates about Trump is that he appeals to the working and middle class.
They absolutely f'ing HATE those people.

They would rather lose by 50 points with a pro-abortion diversity hire, because "she appeals to suburban women" than win by 5 with a pro-life MAGA candidate.

There are 10 times the votes to be gained from the working class than there ever will be among college grads.
But appeals to the working class are rough, loud, boisterous and with crude humor. That doesn't get you praise in the NYT or WaPo. And consultants don't get 6-figure commissions for appeals to them.

The Democrats have discarded with distain the working class. And the GOPe acts like picking it up is a hot dog turd.
That's why Trump can win. And no other Republicans will.

Never have the Republicans pushed a tax change that didn't also benefit the rich.
Never have the Democrats ever pushed a tax change that didn't almost exclusively punish conservatives and benefit the rich.

Nobody has been on the side of average, ordinary Americans, but Trump, for 40 years.

GRAND COUNTY, Colorado (AP) — Somewhere on a remote mountainside in Colorado's Rockies, a latch flipped on a crate and a wolf bounded out, heading toward the tree line. Then it stopped short.

For a moment, the young female looked back at it's audience of roughly 45 people who stared on in reverential silence. Then she disappeared into the forest.

399 On the long list of things that the GOPe hates about Trump is that he appeals to the working and middle class.

This. Every GOP candidate pays a party-picked consultant who tells him "the key to winning is suburban women." Not because they have the most voting potential, but because the consultant wants the candidate to align with their values.

Working class men who don't participate in politics (because frankly they don't see politics offering them anything) would be low-hanging fruit for Republicans. But that would require policies the beltway political consultants find abhorrent; gun rights, immigration control, tax increases on the wealthy.

Republicans would rather be a minority party that futilely appeals to Karen McBoxwine than a majority party for Joe and Jose Beerwater.

One of the reasons I watch the situation over there is that Israel is quietly but determinably doing something they should have done long, long ago, which is preparing to stand completely alone, dependent on no other country. They are taking steps every day to toss the UN and all of its installations out of Gaza, and they have already told the EU to go piss off. They won't tell the US to piss off in the middle of a war, but they're making all the preparations.

There's a downside for the US in this, as a warning to those who hear this and think "Great!" Don't be surprised when a future Israel starts doing deals with Russia and China, because the US can no longer be counted on.

Terry Melcher, Doris Day's son, was cajoled to go out to the Spahn Ranch and hear Charlie's music (there's a film or recording of that, IIRC). Melcher made dismissive noises, which Manson mistook for encouragement, and when no recording contract came through, he was furious with both Wilson and Melcher, which some say was the reason behind the Tate murders.

The Beach Boys did record one Manson song, "Cease To Exist," which they changed to "Cease To Resist."

If we ever end up with a Constitution v2.0 I suspect we need to specifically note that laws can only come into affect if an area votes for them. So if for example all of CO votes to reintroduce wolves into the rural counties, but the rural counties vote no...they don't get introduced there, though CO could instead let them lose in the suburban/urban counties that voted for it.

Yes, this would likely make living in blue shitholes worse but...that's just letting people have what they want to vote for...

447 I am not Catholic and generally don't pay too much attention to the Pope's pronouncements. However, the gay marriage thing is interesting because the Catholic church has been tolerating gay clergy for years. Back in the early 2000's the WashPost did one of their big 3-day investigative reports on gays in seminary, with a lot of interviews with people heterosexual would-be priests who dropped out because they were constantly harassed/bullied, and in some cases, sexually assaulted. It gave the impression that the church was becoming primarily gay as the homosexual clergy dropped out. This was obviously pre-LGBT groups intimidating news orgs from any negative reporting on homosexual behavior, as well as pre-pedo priest blockbuster scandal.
So, it's been 20 years since that small view into Catholic seminary -- is there pressure from within the church to recognize gay relationships given how many of its clergy may well be gay?

478 No one bothered to read the document. In paragraphs 5 and 38:

5. Such is also the meaning of the Responsum of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which states that the Church does not have the power to impart blessings on unions of persons of the same sex.

38. For this reason, one should neither provide for nor promote a ritual for the blessings of couples in an irregular situation. At the same time, one should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing. In a brief prayer preceding this spontaneous blessing, the ordained minister could ask that the individuals have peace, health, a spirit of patience, dialogue, and mutual assistance—but also God’s light and strength to be able to fulfill his will completely.

482 Good morning, all, and thank you, J.J.

Aljazeera, today, News/Israel-Palestine conflict
US announces 10-nation force to counter Houthi attacks in Red Sea. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says coalition will include Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, UK and other countries. (i.e., the Seychelles)
It part, "The United States has announced the launch of a multinational force to protect trade in the Red Sea after attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels forced at least a dozen shipping lines to suspend operations."

Also, "Houthi attacks have effectively rerouted a significant portion of global trade by forcing freight companies to sail around Africa, imposing higher costs and delays for energy, food and consumer goods deliveries.

About 12 percent of global trade passes through the Red Sea, which connects to the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal, including 30 percent of container traffic."
---
And another: Can the US-led maritime force stop Yemen’s Houthi attacks during Gaza war? The Houthis say they won’t stop attacking ships unless Israel stops its attacks on Gaza. So far, the shipping industry doesn’t appear convinced the task force can stop them.

Reminder: It's Fed party week.
