Theory: the Japanese should never have attacked Pearl Harbor, just gone after the Philippines, Malaya, and Singapore. IF FDR could have convinced the anti war public we needed to get in, the USN would have had to sail across the Pacific and fight the IJN close to their home with their land based air support. The US wouldn't have been as wildly outraged. The Pearl attack probably happened because the old admirals still saw battleships as the key which was quickly proved false.

Their thinking was that Japan was soon going to run out of critical materials: oil, steel, and rubber, and so needed to act fast to seize supplies before that happened. They assumed we would have to respond, and even if it were slow to happen, the huge industrial might of the US would eventually overwhelm them. They thought that a short, sharp loss might make the US come to the negotiating table. They thought wrong. Posted by: Archimedes at December 20, 2023 08:42 PM (CsUN+) 108

Surface warfare officers wear black shoes, aviators wear brown shoes. The black shoes ran the Navy prior to Pearl Harbor. Amazingly, none of the carriers were in port on 07 Dec., a fact that greatly distressed Adm. Yamamoto. Since most of the battleships were sunk or significantly damaged, carriers/brown shoes were what was available, and, I submit, necessitated naval strategy going forward and shortened the War. U.S. industrial capability (and women working was a big part of that) would have won the War eventually, but losing the battleships changed the strategy. Not to minimize Midway and submarine warfare. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at December 20, 2023 08:45 PM (sAmhv) I'm sure the Japanese gamed out both scenarios. The old BBs would have been fully kitted out and loaded for bear AND they would have been accompanied by the CVs. The Philippines would have held out long enough for the Navy to arrive. I think the Japanese made the right decision for them. They hit us hard enough to take the oil fields and the rubber plantations. They achieved tactical surprise, but they didn't catch the carriers and didn't have enough nerve to make a second strike at the naval base. Bottom line - Japan never had a chance. It didn't have the population base or the industrial resources to tackle the US, Britain, and Chinese at the same time and to keep an eye on the Soviets.
