First-World Problems...

hoildayyuck.jpg

What does that even mean?

America is a Christian nation, and no amount of post-modern nonsense is going to change that. Besides, the Christmas season is wonderful! And I write as a committed Jew who has never been the least interested in other religions in anything other than a historical and cultural context.

As the signs I see occasionally say: "Keep Christ In Christmas!"

Ah..that's better.

Is it, though? It varies by class and region, but I'm beginning to conclude that we are now a post-Christian nation. Sorry for the downer at this time of year, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

Because of CHRISTMAS.

23 To get serious for one moment, I value the United States as a very special iteration of Legal Fiction, in that it is a pluralist society with a two tiered structure: social obligation and individual existence. The balance is not perfect as it never is. But I've been to other places and not as a privileged tourist, and have no shit kissed the ground under the US flag on return.
In no uncertain way, if nothing else my valued Construct of the USA refutes the brutality of Paganism.
I deeply value and embrace the concept of the USA, the freest society to ever exist. I refuse Theocracy. Have your Faith. Contribute to Society.
If your Faith or cosmology does not contribute but destroys, off with You.
Americans build things, and people.

The other point I like to make is Chanukah is not the Jewish Christmas, and relatively minor theologically. Let's not equate the two.

A lot of my family is RC so there has always been a tension in the logistics of how these holidays are celebrated but that usually gets dissolved in either latkes or eggnog.

101 A lot of my family is RC so there has always been a tension in the logistics of how these holidays are celebrated but that usually gets dissolved in either latkes or eggnog.

When you understand and observe and respect the real meaning of both holidays, there is no problem.

That's my father's family mix. After the older generation got too old to host the family Christmas party, the Jewish relatives took it on. It always falls on the weekend where Advent and Hanukkah first overlap.

When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the Hanukkah Bush that looked like a Christmas tree but had blue-and-white lights and ornaments made by my RC great-aunt who was an artist. It took me a long time to figure out that no one else had a Hanukkah Bush!

She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

123 To say "Holiday Season" or to say "Happy Holidays" is to acknowledge Christmas. I detest the "holiday" greeting thing for its hypocrisy. If one is going to deny Christmas, then make no greeting at all, or at least single out New Years Day, since that is what is being acknowledged - and is therefore not plural.

Merry Christmas to all!

134 I've always said "Merry Christmas" this time of year to anyone I encounter. Yet to have someone refute it.

As an aside, I had a nice discussion with the Indian (dot, not feather) owner of the local liquor store the other day. Went through the litany of various holidays celebrated by the various ethnic groups. He, and for the most part his family have adopted to things here in the US. Although, as I understand it, the Hindus tend to defer to the mother/matriarch of the family for religious/cultural things. Thus, he does his "un-Hindu" cooking (chicken, fish, pork but no beef) in a garage kitchen so as to not disrespect her and her beliefs.

I found it... refreshing given how rabid some people are about the various holidays.

His family and later followers celebrated his birthday, which considering certain Jewish festivals (all of which He celebrated) which clues say happened at that time, fell on the 25 or 26 of December. Not certain, because people who hate it will dispute anything endlessly.
