Gun Thread: Sunday Before Christmas Eve Edition!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be December 17th? It's dang near Christmas! Next time we're together it'll be Christmas Eve! And do you know what happens right after Christmas Eve? Do you know?

Q: Weasel, what happens right after Christmas Eve?
A: Christmas Day! Christmas Day happens right after Christmas Eve!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

More Q&A
Q: Weasel, are we getting ripped-off again this week, content-wise?
A: Why yes, yes as a matter-of-fact you are.

Re-run Alert: Here's a fun look back at the guns of Christmas from yester-year featured on the December 2, 2018 Gun Thread.

What red-blooded American girl or boy wouldn't want to find a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree on Christmas morning?

121723 eye patches 2 scaled.jpg
Thanks Santa!!

121723 red ryder stock photo scaled.jpg
Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun

Introduced in 1940, the Daisy Red Ryder BB gun quickly captured the imagination of red-blooded American boys and girls across the country. Developed and marketed in conjunction with Dell Comics and the Western hero by the same name, the Red Ryder fires a .177 cal BB at 350 fps with a maximum range of approximately 195 yards. Careful! You'll put an eye out!

In the era before electronic distractions and overly protective parents raising impossibly overprogrammed children, the Red Ryder was often at the very top of a young person's Christmas wish list. A mainstay of backyard ranges, the BB gun was frequently their first introduction to shooting; teaching responsibility, safety and marksmanship. These were the days when stay-at-home moms told their kids to go outside and play in the morning and to be home before dark, never worrying about life-changing social injustices suffered on the playground, or worse. The fact that the Daisy Red Ryder is still in production today is frankly a little surprising, having somehow not yet succumbed to the rabidly hysterical anti-gun mob and toy fun-police.

121723 daisy Nationals scaled.jpg

For nearly 140 years, the company now known as Daisy Outdoor Products has been manufacturing air guns. Originally a steel windmill manufacturer, the company began making air guns in 1880 as a premium offered to farmers purchasing a windmill. Eventually the rifles were in such demand the company discontinued its main product line to concentrate on the air gun business. Today, the company actively promotes gun safety through a series of online programs and printed material and has an extensive competitive shooting program holding matches since 1966.

Daisy is but one of many manufacturers offering these types of programs. Do you know a young person who might benefit or otherwise enjoy participating?

121723 daisy red ryder scaled.jpg

Did you have an air gun, and was it a Daisy Red Ryder? Was it a surprise from Santa, or did you have to beg Mom and Dad for it? Were you allowed to roam with it at will, or were you more closely supervised?

Do you still have both eyes?

Cigar of the Week

121723 rhomb scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Joya de Nicaragua Black

Joya de Nicaragua is the oldest cigar company in Nicaragua, having opened before the diaspora of cigar families fleeing Castro's Cuba arrived and helped turn the country into the powerhouse of 'New World' (non-Cuban) cigars that it is today. I've reviewed their Antano CT (one of my favorite Connecticut's) and Silver (one of my first favorite Maduros).

The Joya Black is a very dark cigar, with a rustic looking Mexican San Andres wrapper. I tried the 'Nocturno', which is a corona (6.25 X 46). Binder and filler are Nicaraguan. The burn line was fairly well behaved, requiring only a few touch-ups. Smoke was ample. For a cigar so dark it did not come across to me as extremely strong, and the flavors were subtle. Coffee or mocha, and an overall slight sweetness. Overall a nice simple experience. The Black is available online for $7 and up.

Bigly Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

21 You can shoot your Red Ryder indoors too. It's kinda safe. You need a trap made out of a box stuffed with stuff. It's relatively safe for shooting vermin in the shop shed or barn too.

22 I've owned two Enfield 1917s, a Winchester and an Eddystone. I liked the sights but didn't like either rifle they are not balanced very well. I then got a Springfield 1903A3, Remington, and found it poorly balanced and far too light.
I finally got a Yugo M48 8mm and that's about the perfect Mauser for me. I think the USA just kind of screwed the pooch with the bolt action and really didn't get it right with a battle rifle until the M1 Garand, then screwed that up again for quite a while.
Still not a fan of the Stoner designs.

26 Today we did a smaller version of the DMV MGC as it was the week before Christmas edition. We decided shooting rifles on the 50 yard range (the longest our rangevoffers) was appropriate. Ed L. brought a B&T SPR300 Pro which is an integrally suppressed bolt action short barrel rifle in .300 Blackout. The claim is that it is the quiet centerfire rifle available.

My assessment is that this is correct. It sounds like a spring BB gun (like a Red Ryder!) First time I fired it I thought it was a misfire - it did not go bang! It is ridiculously quiet. Ed L. acquired a Trijicon optic from another moron (don't know the specs but a really nice piece of glass) and he was getting it zeroed for the first time. He brought a tripod and once it was dialed in, it was dialed in.

Now, it's from B&T not PSA, so it is definitely not a budget firearm. But if you have the means, I highly recommend it.

30 I've got a BB machine gun too. That thing is a blast but it huffs CO2 and only holds 25 rounds, about 2 1/2 seconds.

Posted by: fd at December 17, 2023 07:15 PM (vFG9F)

31 There are two weaknesses of the P14/1917 US Rifle. One is the ejector which is a ridiculous very breakable one piece spring (P14 and 1917 rifles have different size ejector springs becuz different sized cartridges to eject.

The second is bolt takedown. Unlike the friendly Mauser 98 style takedown, the P14 and 1917 Rifle bolts are best taken down with a U shaped shim that helps you avoid the very strong firing pin springs from launching the firing pin at your eye or ceiling or the slipping and crushing parts of your anatomy by the bolt shroud slipping. Always wear safety glasses, face shields or goggles, when taking these down to components.

Some use pennies or dimes as the takedown shim but these can slip out fairly easily.

If you have the semi rare Dayton Traister cock on opening kit on it (to make it like most other bolt action rifles), those are VERY difficult to take down due to spring pressure required for the conversion. ALWAYS use the proper tool to take these down. First 1917 had this installed and taking down the bolt was a literal pain to do so and had to make a tool (the u shaped shim) to do so.

38 LenNeal,

The probable reason it did not 'balance' for you is the stock length. People were shorter then and the butt stock length and trigger reach were designed to fit the average male back then. Shorter stocks are relatively easy to fix with simply adding a slip on recoil stock that makes these easier to shoot extended periods anyway.

FWIW, the so called bloody nose S stock of the 1903 is short enough that shooters that unwisely put their thumb across the wrist often ended up with it gouging out part of their face or nose upon recoil. C stocks or even the Scant grips are more comfortable to shoot for a lot of folks but the S stock using iron sights recoils straight back which some people prefer.

The ISSC MK22 [SCAR lookalike] in .22LR along with three extra magazines [also mail order] that are recommended at 22 rounds to avoid possible jamming but might be able to take up to 23 rounds.

44 An oddity which is very little known and I got into with DocAV about it on Gunboards years ago, when he refused to admit he was wrong, and pissed me off (I do not like people who can't admit being wrong); the 'French' Chauchat was made for Belgium in 7.65mm, then sold to Serbia with the idea of using up old stocks of ammunition, then rechambered to 7.92mm Mauser. The magazines look like the ill-fated .30-06 USA version, but are not at all. The Muzej has one on display, and I know they have a bunch of them hidden away.
They are not the Polish conversions, they are not Partisan one-offs, they are a real thing. There were never very many, maybe 2,000 total. But they are not French, not US, not Polish, or half-assed conversions. A few turned up into the 1950s in tribal conflicts in Albania.

49 I am very blessed. Some time back I received some .308 in an order by mistake. sra blaster suggested and I agreed rapidly that I could remedy this problem by acquiring a rifle chambered in .308. (Note, this solution was also offered by the Gun Thread). So win-win.

Well, with permission to purchase one .308 rifle, I of course ended up with TWO. I wanted a Mossberg Scout, which was scarce, and a Mossberg Patrol (similar, but not the same) came up on Gunbroker. And then a Scout came up before I received the Patrol, and I bought that, too.

Cool. But one of those rifles was on the authorized list, and one was not. So the extra rifle stayed hidden in the safe/bottom of the creek. And then, last week, sra blaster says "I like shooting .308 I want one." So I said,
well I think I have something for you. Today we went to the range and she is SCARY good with the Patrol the way it is set up. So, yes, win-win! I made her happy, AND I didn't get in trouble!

--------
Why? Garands and Lee-Enfields are apples and oranges. Army Ordnance screwed up Garand's designs from the get go--first by positively refusing to accept any removable box magazine for the new battle rifle (Garand's first design had just such a magazine) and then second, Douglas MacArthur dictating that the rifle could not be in the as designed new .276 cartridge but must be redesigned to handle the portlier 30-06 cartridge because the US Army had vast amounts of it in storage dating back to WWI.

62 One of my favorite bolt rifles to shoot is the Carcano M38 Carbine.

Handles well, fixed sights (300 meters) so once you know your holds your good to go and even works fine with the used ammo clips I have as my other Carcanos tend to be clunky when feeding after 2 or 3 rounds due to the follower spring. Recoil is very mild.

Plenty accurate too using PPU ammo. Just a fun gun to shoot and test one's shooting abilities.

67 44 I had a dewat Chauchat some years back. The bolt face had been welded and the chamber plugged. For display purposes I found .35 Remington fit in the magazine with the not very well thought out port showing the brass. I made up some dummy rounds for it. It was otherwise complete and in really good shape. Ended up getting donated to a service club for their display cabinet and I wasn't sure of the legal side of things but they accepted it. Same club had a little back room collection including a PPsH 41 and a FG42, both of which had missed the amnesty.

75 Many ranges collect the spent brass. I've heard of one prankster who would drop a used wildcat round into the mix. Sure enough, a few days later the headscratching would begin, usually ending up with everyone gathered around, said casing on the counter, discussing what make & model it was from etc. (until somebody spoils the fun by looking it up on the internet.) We'd spend hours on it, among other topics. Now, don't be the joker that slips in a spent blooper. That just attracts the BATF, everybody gets the stink eye, and nobody is happy. 81 I am aware of where to put my thumb on a hard-kicking bolt gun. I solved my bolt-action problems by acquiring a rifle that is properly designed. I am very satisfied with my Yugo M48 and strongly feel the USA variants are mostly crap.
Posted by: LenNeal
-------
I have a Yugo M48 and quite frankly it is a pretty rough albeit stout action. Not a big fan of the elm stock as it is portly. Oberndorf Mausers are actually the creme de la creme as far as silky smoothness and even during wartime, their stds and tolerances did not slip one iota compared with other makers in both WWI and WWII. I would rate CZ's second in fit and finish but there are some variances.

You ignored what I mentioned about the bloody nose stock that is was named that because it was a short stock and doctrine at the time taught people to get right up on the tang to make the most out of the sights.

Too many people with large hands put their thumb across the wrist simply to put it somewhere and ended up with a bloody face. Improper technique but then again some feel that the stock was ill designed in the first place to allow it.

Do the 4473, he does his part, hits send... and says, "You must know somebody, it came right back immediately". Then asks if I have a TS clearance.
"Maybe..." or maybe not.

Guess the guys running the 4473 are trying to figure out disparity in processing times. There is also that 'QuickCheck' or whatever TSA calls it. I suspect that some Big Government databases are constantly pinging each other with updates and as soon as one is picked-up by the popo red flags are pushed through the various systems. Same with clearances.

91 I finally got to the range this week for the first time in many moons and it was a delightful surprise. A Ruger Mk II and a Ruger Single-Ten, iron sights, 25 yards, no rest but elbows braced. I was able to keep slightly over two inch groups that were pretty well centered. After the long absence I expected the target to look like I was using bird shot even though these guns are capable of outstanding accuracy. I credit the lessons passed along on the thread over the years: be patient, breathe slowly and remember trigger discipline. It really paid off. The next time I'm going to use a solid rest and see how that goes.

BTW, this was also my first time shooting since the cataract surgery in October. What a difference! Both sights and the target were clear and in focus. I could get used to this.

I just, really, feel the USA did a very poor job with the bolt gun altogether. It's my personal opinion. The Krag, which turned out to be a terrific... civilian deer rifle in carbine form; the Springfield, a Mauser knockoff so obvious it's impossible to respect; the Enfield which is okay and hugely strong but was never meant to be an issue rifle. The USA didn't get it 'right' until the M1 Garand.

Springfields and the Mauser derived P14's and 1917 rifles are usually more accurate than then even German made Mausers. Main problem with Mausers is that quality varies a bit more widely than Springfields as it was made more places and by more factories. So an Oberndorf Mauser might be fine (Oberndorf did not apparently use slave labor at their plant during WWII) but a bnz war time mauser might be quite bad not to mention that Steyr employed slave workers during WWII that sometimes sabotaged their rifles. Even though Steyr itself was and is a basically excellent factory for firearms.

Springfields do have their problems namely the bolt design using a separate striker and firing pin and takedown but not in accuracy nor in basic design.

120 The Yugo M48 is mostly limited by issue sights. There are a couple of outfits that sell rather nice non-permanent back sight peep arrangements; also it is that not-popular intermediate action so it's hard to get scope mounts for it even if you were so inclined.
The Zastava M70 bolt Sporter is actually a full-length vz24 action spruced up, and a very well made action it is. But the radius on the action is not the same as other Mausers so it's hard to get scope mounts for it outside of ex-Yugo.
The barrels on both the M48 and the M70 are very well made. But due to oddities of manufacture are rarely wrung out to their full potential.

The P14 Enfield was a Brit armory take on the basic Mauser design taken from the pre War P13 project to replace the SMLE. It was purpose built around a new 7mm cartridge that turned out similar to later 7mm magnum in both pressure and tendency to eat barrels. It was a very minor change to make the P14 in .303 into firing the 30-06 because the Brits had designed it for longer rimless cartridges in the first place. Most of the P14 problems in production dealt with the changing the magazine design to fit and feed rimmed cartridges when the Brit 7mm project ran into WWI difficulties.

There is actually a fair amount of Krag genetics in the Springfield as the separate firing pin-striker design came from the Krag as did the sights and those specifically were American and British not German in origin (see the Trapdoor Buffington sights way back in the 1880's). The bolt release is vastly different for the 1903 as is using it also for a magazine shut off which has no influence from Germans whatsoever. So we are left with the major influence to be the twin locking lug design.

131 Another oddity of hunting rifles in Southern/Eastern Europe/etc is that the majority of hunts are driven; and even with a guide individually any shot over 100 meters away is so unusual it's talked about as a fluke. The vast majority of shots are about 50 meters (yards, about).
So all that potential with optics and stocks and 300-year accuracy? Nobody cares about it at all as it will never be used. The only guys who give a shit about distance shooting are the military, and if YOU, Igor/Joe Blow, express an interest in shooting long-distance, it sets off warning bells that you might have some idea other than hunting.

135 119 The latest Glock, the Model 49, is a G17 upper with a G19 grip.

From about 1989 to the mid-'90s, a very popular mod among armed professionals was to have the grip of a G17 cut down to G19 size.

Now the Model 49 is being touted by Glock fanbois as "the greatest Glock ever"!

Fun fact: The Glock 17 was not named for its magazine capacity, but rather for the 17th patent that Glock recieved.

140 The barrels on both the M48 and the M70 are very well made. But due to oddities of manufacture are rarely wrung out to their full potential.
Posted by: LenNeal

The action itself it rougher than even the 24/47 progenitor of the m48. It is undoubtedly one of the stronger Mausers ever made but its fit and finish along with bolt smoothness of the military version leaves a lot to be desired compared with similar Czech or German wartime makes.

You can polish it into a diamond via various tactics like polishing the receiver raceways and bolt lugs but it is a harder go than Mauser made by others. The open sights are pretty much bog Mauser stds and useful for people with good eyes and field experience using them.

The sporting Yugo Mauser rifles imported to the US demonstrate a much greater fit and finish as to be expected.

Feels too light for the Jap 7.7, similar to the .30-06, and you feel every shot like the rifle wants to wrestle with you and the stock is just barely hanging in there. Plenty accurate and shorter that the Type 38, but a bear to shoot, while the Type 38 is a pure pleasure and accurate with zero recoil from the Jap 6.5.

WWI was not a proud effort by ammo manufacturers in the US. They churned out product but far too much of it was shoddy. US Ordnance was also criminally stupid in that it left vast stocks of WWI era 1917 rifles in horrible storage conditions so much so that when we needed rifles desperately again in WWII, the US had to get outside makers to produce barrels to replace those rusted and corroded from poor storage. Receivers also had to be sandblasted and fixed which is where you get WWII era gray parkerizing rather than the original WWI finish of bluing or black parkerizing. Fortunately both High Standard and Johnson Automatics made excellent barrels.

Mine is a 1942 Model with all the junk (aircraft sights, chromed bore, and the ridiculous foldout bipod). I have both. The M70 sporting came in, in some shipment from a hunting club going broke and I scored a brand-new rifle that had sat in a rack for 20+ years for USD$400. The M48 is crude with a capital 'K' and it was mostly designed that way. I'm fine with that, I like mine, it's pretty well worn in with years of graphite and stock polishing by conscripts. I showed photos of it There to JNA people and everyone agrees it got polished and cleaned up a lot. My specific M48 is very well fitted in, has the original machined parts with no stampings, and is a delight to shoot.

It doesn't! I had a long Swedish M95 and it was an amazing piece of craftsmanship. I shot it a few times and it was exceptionally accurate. But I would not bother carrying it into, oh, an actual war. 193 A couple of additions to blaster's earlier comment upthread. I think the B&T SPR 300 Pro would be a great starter centerfire bolt action rifle for newbies to try. The integral suppressor really dampens the noise and muzzle blast compared to other centerfire rifles, supposedly to the point where hearing protection is not necessary as long as you're using subsonic rounds. Everyone with the DMV MGC got the opportunity to shoot a five shot group at 50 yards once the rifle was zeroed. Everyone shot nice tight groups (1.5" - 2") on the targets. Not bad for first times on a completely unfamiliar rifle system.

It's the short model made in 1942-3 I believe. Stacked cannon balls and serial number in the 90,000s with what looks like a marijuana plant for the series. Mum was ground off but the airplane sights are still there, no cleaning rod however. It takes the short cleaning rod which are like hen's teeth.

200 187 Back in my teen years, there was a guy you would see at gun shows that collected European bolt action carbines, some so tiny they could be described as cute. I bought a Swede carbine from him, can't remember the barrel length but very short, and it was a lot of fun and very accurate with Norma (all you could get then) ammo. It was a military rifle that was the perfect deer rifle without resorting to the kitchen table and saw(sadly common in those years).

202 The most baffling rifle I sort-of wish I had kept but then don't, is the Swiss K31. It was almost TOO neat and elegant. The straight-pull was fast, but also not particularly intuitive, the front sight was drifted diagonally, the back sight wasn't very adjustable.
I got a few boxes of 7.5mm and tried it out and kept fumbling with it. It was made like, well, a Swiss watch but it just did not fit with anything else I'd ever handled and I kept not being able to work the thing.
I kept slapping the bottom of the straight pull handle trying to work the action and finally decided it just wasn't for me, too many years of imprinting with turn bolts to make it work. I guess I just wasn't sophisticated enough for the K31.

Got a muzzle loader from a grandfather when I was about 5 (~1970).
It was a muzzle loader of about 0.25 cal. Used the paper caps to propel a cork ball. You could douple up (or more) the paper caps to make it more fun.

That guy gave us the coolest toys. Rarely seen him because Granmother divorced his ass and moved a hundred miles away when he was caught boinking the baby sitter.

240 I've taken six or seven people to shoot handguns for the first time. I always start with a 1911 in .45. I tell them it will recoil but it's no big deal. They have no expectations for what it "should" be, and it doesn't hurt so they are fine with it. Typically they later try a 9mm and are pleasantly surprised by the light recoil.

Not always. My wife prefers 1911 in .45 and shoots better with it.

250 JTB,
Swedish Mausers in fit and finish are good as the best of German manufacturers. Oberndorf still has the Swedish Building where the first Swedish Mausers were made prior to manufacturing being transferred to Sweden's Gustaf Armory.

The 6.5x55 Swede is one of the best cartridges of all time and many of the top hunting cartridges today are based on the idea of long heavy bullets being pushed at moderate speeds as to maximize penetration and killing power for large game.

Combine the two and you get excellent well made rifles (the 1896 Model is great for the target range, not so fun to carry and if you like practical, the m38 short rifles and m94 carbines are lots of fun.

I like them all and you will often see corroded receivers and bolts, rust, etc. from other makes of Mausers but as Swedish Mausers used Swedish steel, you will see superior resistance to that of Swedish Mausers and even the German made early ones were required to use Swedish steel.

265 Combine the two and you get excellent well made rifles (the 1896 Model is great for the target range, not so fun to carry and if you like practical, the m38 short rifles and m94 carbines are lots of fun.
I like them all and you will often see corroded receivers and bolts, rust, etc. from other makes of Mausers but as Swedish Mausers used Swedish steel, you will see superior resistance to that of Swedish Mausers and even the German made early ones were required to use Swedish steel.

Colorado Gun Sales for Swiss rifles has a good selection and we still get dribbles from any Century International (or you can buy direct from them if you have a C&R license). The heyday of the Swede Mausers was about ten years ago but Simpson's Ltd in Illinois had quite a few sporterized (some lightly, some not) Swedish Mausers of different flavors for not a whole lot of money several months ago or so.

Swedish Mauser stocks are still available at reasonable costs as is other furniture for them including handguards if you wanted to restore one.

270 255 234 No love for the Raven .25? Actually a pretty good little pistol. I used to get freebies from a distributor when I had my FFL (buy X amount, get a Raven). They had an extended firing pin acting as an ejector that often broke from dry firing, but if somebody was on a super duper tight budget it would defend the night stand or sock drawer. Just don't dry fire it.

I look at it this way: having carried rifles, would you rather carry a goalie stick, or a baseball bat? I mean, over time, one is going to be far more handy than the other. That to me is the difference, ergonomically, between long rifles and rifles you will actually carry. A baseball bat is about right, something like an axe handle, a sledgehammer handle. Anything more than that gets just too long or too heavy.

HB Guy, no problem. Some of the M38's will have period 40's dated Husqvarna receiver and others will have rebuilt 1896 Gustaf receivers with the shorter 24 inch barrel. The newer open sight slides regulated for the change in the std. ammo will have a T mark on the sight slide.

Some will have sight tables on the stock with appropriate conversions along with a stock disk that explains the rifle's condition. Been too long to remember the markings but they are available online.

You will also see frequent examples with threaded muzzles at teh end of barrels as these were used to fire with a wooden bullet splitter adaptor that screwed onto the end to the barrel. You can pick up threaded flash hiders from Sarco to protect those barrel threads if you want or a short cap from a number of places that are threaded for the odd muzzle thread.

Most of the early smokeless rifles carried on the long barrel traditions of the last of the blackpowder rifles. The Brits and US were the first to move to shorter barrels for general issue rather than separate carbines/musket length barrels for calvary/others and infantry. Much of the 1890's and 1900's bolt action rifles were designed at this time and not surprisingly came with long barrels such as the GEW, the Mannlicher, Mosin, and so on. Volley fire ideas also played a part in that decision.

WWI led to the shorter carbines for general issue rather than the old carbine/rifle distinction.

My callback was immediate; she got a firm "no," and an apology from the vendor. He'd seen this before. I ended up having to buy both of them. A couple of days later, her approval came through. Long time ago, I did a deep dive into Swedish steel and metallurgy including the fun fact that US Ordnance specified Swedish steel for Krag barrels back in the day. The Swedes have the benefit of an apparent massive meteor filled will all sorts of goodies good with steel such trace elements of nickel, vanadium, chromium, etc, along with a massive chunk of magnetite iron ore. It is also low in bad trace elements like sulfur. Even Bessemer when he first developed the process specified that British mills were to use only Swedish iron ore at first. Essentially, the trace elements in the Swedish iron ore were not removed by processing it into steel back in the day and gave it superior attributes of strength and corrosion resistance when compared with similar steel of that era.

The introduction of the Glock 17 in 1983 and the 1986 FBI Miami shootout. When the FBI abandoned the .357 Magnum revolver (a caliber the FBI introduced, BTW), in favor of a semiauto pistol, that was the signal for other PDs across the country to look for an alternative to their issued revolvers. The Glock 17, being cheaper to make compared to most revolvers from Colt and S&W, didn't take long before it began making inroads into major departments, such as the NYPD.

By WWII, the Swedes had shortened the barrels to the commonly mentioned m38 std. and retrofitted older receivers along with some newly made ones for WWII possible service. The barrel is metric but right around 23-24 inches in length which is contemporary with the k98, Mosins of the 1938/44 makes, No. 4 Lee Enfields, and US Springfields.

The 94 carbines and their lookalikes made from 1896 model receivers have an odd barrel length as they had to retrofit those carbines to a longer barrel for US importation (they were under the old 18 inch barrel length importation std. )

The Glock did not get widespread adoption until City of Miami (the Alvarado case and Janet Reno's persecution of him based on the fallacious claim that Alvarado cocked his revolver first and wrongfully killed a murderous scumbag). adopted them after the ATF ruled that they were double action. At the time, many police agencies were going to double action only or double/single action pistols in transition from revolvers. The Wonder Nines originally that were hi caps were metal framed Smith and Wessons, Sigs, and Berettas and these ruled the Eighties. The US military went to the Beretta M92, Smith and Wesson dominated the police ranks with its 2nd and 3rd Generation.

Interesting decade for handgun design and drug/terrorism induced violence hit extremes in a lot of places leading to cops being outgunned. There is also a strong relationship between cops and military and when the military went to large cap, then the cops did as well.

Nope, Saive's Browning High Point was a successful double stack but functioned well only with FMJ at the time before WWII.

Smith and Wesson redesigned its Walther derived model 59 into high caps--first at the request of Special Forces in Vietnam and later as the 59-2 for police but there were few takers at first and many of these had teething problems with anything other than fmj. When Smith went to CAD in a big way in the 80's, it opened the door to the 2nd and 3rd Generation which fed anything including hollow points and odder profile bullets. Ergonomics was also superb in these firearms compared with earlier makes.

Most of them are devoid of history and a sense of place that comes from it. You are giving them a sense of what came before and doing them an excellent turn in grounding them into what came before.

Marxists believe in destroying the past so that that people will not yearn for it but it essentially leaves most people adrift and ignorant.

340 Got to watch an interesting scene at a gub store last week. Hispanic couple goes up to counter. Woman asks to see a small 1911-style .380 with faux-pearl grips. Immediately hands it to the male, who, amid considerable conversation in Spanish, manipulates it well, ends up pointing it 'gangsta-style', and then gives it back to woman, who returns it to clerk.

They then proceed over to the used rack, and she asks to look at the only used AR. Clerk hands it to her, who immediately hands it to male, who clearly knows his way around an AR, amid even more Spanish conversation. He then hands it to the clerk, and says "I'll take it:, in English. Clerk asks if he has a TX driver's license and if he's a U.S. resident. Woman steps up, looks directly at clerk, and says "We'll be using my identification."

Clerk says "I'm sorry, ma'am, but we won't be able to sell you this gun." "Why not?" "Because I believe you are purchasing this gun for another individual, which is against the law." Woman goes off on clerk, shouting he's a racist, and asked for her papers, "which is against the law!" More shouting from woman as they depart. Clerk said this happens at least once a week now.

344 Long time ago, I did a deep dive into Swedish steel and metallurgy including the fun fact that US Ordnance specified Swedish steel for Krag barrels back in the day.

Posted by: whig at December 17, 2023 09:04 PM (JAi95)

Narvik, Norway, was the only year-round ice-free port for getting the high-quality Swedish iron ore out to the world. Including Germany. The British and French plan to take Narvik in early Spring 1940 to stop Swedish ore shipments to Germany was beaten to the punch by a couple weeks or less by Hitler's invasion of Norway, Operation Weserubung, beginning 9th April 1940. The Brits took Narvik from the Germans but evacuated after the German attack on France and the Low Countries on 10th May 1940.

352 The main handgun used by Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) was a Colt MKIV/Series 70 Government Model. This handgun is supposed to be the one he carried during his service in Vietnam (which would have been a M1911A1) and is sometimes carried in a tanker-style holster, most often seen carried inside wast band small of back, no holster. It was sometimes seen in Magnum's flashbacks to Vietnam.

A former propmaster for the show has been quoted saying that the original gun was a traditional .45 ACP 1911, but was soon changed to a 9mm version because .45 ACP blanks were too hard to get on location for the show.

353 The 80's belonged to Smith and Wesson and in part because of their past relationship with Police Departments due to revolvers. You saw jurisdictions here and there adopt Beretta 92's (LA for example) and Sigs at some other places or where PD's allowed people to carry their own firearms of choice as long as it was chambered for the PD's official cartridge. The Alvarado case involved Miami police the Liberty City riots. Alvarado approached some street scum, the guy tried to pull a gun on Alvarado at close range in an arcade and Alvarado put him down with his revolver. Due to Fla Politics, Janet Reno as DA was determined to put Alvarado behind bars and invented the idea that Alvarado must have cocked his revolver to single action and shot scumbag unintentionally as the victim dindu nuffin. Many of the PDs had already being sued over cops shooting in single action claims and were requiring revolvers to be made double action only already. Then the transition to automatics made that into Double Action/Single Action as from the Walther P38 onwards (really the PPK) as being more safe than cocked and locked single action.

363 The Miami police chief resolutely refused to go to semi-automatics until one was made double action and voila, Glock got the ATF to declare its new "safe action" as double action only. This led to approval in Miami and then on to a lot of other police departments. They discovered that A) Glocks were cheaper than alternatives, B) required less training than DA/SA, and C) had quicker armorer schools and cheaper spare parts than the competition.

Glock stealing a march on Smith and Wesson on the Glock Fortay in the 90's despite Smith actively working to make it a cartridge made it worse for Smith and Wesson despite the 3rd Generation being probably the apex of reliability and durability for S&W.

That being said, the early Glock 40's were a kludged pos that should have never earned the title of Glock perfection as the chamber rear was left unsupported and Glock had to add a second reinforcing pin over time to stop frames from cracking. S&W 40's of that period demonstrate no such problems (or Rugers/Berettas/Sigs for that matter).

Then did some PSA Dagger drills after tightening up the front sight nut. And...it came loose again after less than 50 rounds. Fucking thing. It's about to get Gorilla glued in place. Finished out the box with the CZ P07. The groups with the CZ were just as good as with the PSA Dagger with red dot. Take that for what it's worth.

Did some more Kadet CZ shooting and had no problems with the CCI MiniMags but did have a failure to feed with other ammo. I'm still feeling like it's an ammo problem but more investigations to come in the future. Because I love the Kadet adapter on the CZ P07 and I don't want to stop using it.

Sometimes my points run into each other. Saive though designed the magazine and more or less made the Browning into what it became rather than the less impressive Browning design (not his fault but due to him trying to fulfill idiotic French Army requests. Arguably, Peter Mauser did it with Mauser rifles (really a stack and half design) as did the Brits with the Lee Enfield mag.

Early High Powers had problems with less than FMJ because the combination of the feeding ramp and the magazine led to less than good feeding. Eventually they got rid of the hump in the feeding ramp somewhere in the late 60's-early 70's which made feeding bullets with profiles different than fmj practical.

Early Sig designs had that issue as well until the early 80's.

Posted by: Ed L

Cost of production of Glocks is a closely guarded secret because they are not publicly traded. My guess was that Glock at the time could sell PD's weapons for 2/3rds or less of what Smith (or Sig or Beretta) could do. Then add in the support package of cheap spare parts, cheaper training, and cheap armorer training, led to PDs stampeding to them. Smith tried to rip off Glock first with its own polymer gun that was so close in tolerances that a lot of Glock parts would fit the Smith. S&W lost a lawsuit to Glock and then cast about desperate to get into the market as 3rd Gen sales slipped while costs mounted due to more expensive materials. Thus you get the P99 partnership with Walther and later the M&P which gave Smith and Wesson their own distinct poly nine which captured a lot of police interest but has faded down the stretch.

Only Sig since the breakthrough military contract right now is seriously affecting Glock's market share but primarily in the civilian market so far.

386 Did I have BB guns at an early age? Yep
Still have both eyes? Yep
BUT...I still have a scar, from a BB all of the way through my Lip.
Bounced off a tooth, was rolling around inside my mouth, thought I had lost that tooth, the immediate swelling, right after a dramatic spurt of blood was....Impressive.
It raised a nearly egg sized lump in seconds, luckily it was early enough in the day, that with some ice....and hours until supper...the swelling went down enough that Mom believed I had fallen on a stick while wrestling with a brother.
I still have half a dozen BB guns of various sizes and powers, dozens of other peoples kids have learned to shoot with them

How do they do with pheasant? Can you see them pointing in the tall grass? Posted by: GWB at December 17, 2023 09:48 PM (sSx7k)

I never had any luck hunting with bird dogs. Too heavy to throw up high enough to snag anything flying.

/break.

Excellent Gun Thread. Merry (almost) Christmas, Weasel & Y'all !

389 379 Whig @ 375- And that's why I bought an SA 35, even though I have an original High Power.
Posted by: Eromero
-----------
They look quite nice and the High Power is one of the best at fitting more people's hands with a cheap replacement of grips without having to resort to changeable backstraps etc. The 1911 is another as is the original K Frame Smith revolver.

I toyed with getting another one to match my Argentinian FM High Power and the SA35 has come down quite a bit in price and is more available now. Ended up going a different route and retro with Smith 3rd Generations that I have rebuilt (ex cop guns) as they have a lot in common with Smith and Wesson revolver trigger strokes.

In tall grass you see why they got that name. They mostly flush and retrieve. Rustling grass, the a head pops up. Sometime looking back at you. They might point if they are in really open areas. "Alright, go hunt'em up!" I was running my lol sister's dog, who usually spent her days getting moles and stacking them by the back door. Older brother was breeding Springers and was into the Field Trial circut. They were a sight to behold.

372 Thanks for the background on the police transition from revolvers to semiautos, Whig. I didn't know how much politics played in that transition, or that S&W started with a lead in the market, but ended up losing it to Glock for reasons that may not be due to the merits of its offerings. Interesting that S&W started out w/ the better design, but Glock won w/ a less than "perfect" product in the end.

I lived through a lot of it but also collect a lot of old handgun books and you can see the battles play out with various big name trainers claiming this or that in their columns.

Massad Ayoob is probably the best capsule historian of the era in his various Combat Handgun Digests (starting with the 5th edition I believe). Those began in the early 80's and provide excellent insight in historical arms that were new at the time---for example the Sig P226 or the Beretta 92. Older firearm books that are useful references include WEB Smith's books, Phil Sharpe's reloading books from the early 50's. and Henry Stebbins Encyclopedia books from the early 60's. Lots of forgotten knowledge in those.

I recommend Chuck Taylor's SMG, Rifle, and Handgun books too.
