First-World Problems...

BurnerWoes.jpg

Looks like a normal burner! But...and this is sort of a big deal with burners...it doesn't ignite. The gas flows, but the electric starter has stopped working. And because of the brilliant cost-saving design of the KitchenAid corporation, the starter and wiring harness goes to all five burners, and the individual starters can't be replaced.

But it gets better! My excellent appliance repair guy tells me that the replacement parts are crap. Odds are that if he buys a set they will not work! The stove is considered old...12 years is now old in our modern economy!

Well sh*t...I've gone and done it; I crossed the Rubicon of serious posts! This small issue is reflective of a changing economy that counts on ever decreasing manufacturing costs to make products that were once repairable into throw-away commodities. But that begs the question; How are we to afford the total cost, which is soaring because of inflation?

My guess is that if the Biden Economy continues to improve as much as the Junta wants us to believe, we will be returning to an economy that is much more focused on repair and longevity, because we simply will not be able to afford anything else.

21 EV recharging stations: not enough of them. When you find one, the lines are long. By the time it's your turn to charge, the charging station is out of order. When you look up availability on your app, the app gives you outdated or inaccurate information. Then it's rinse and repeat or look for a motel and hope for the best.

A friend works at the reservation desk of a hotel chain. He got an irate call from a guest because the hotel at which he was staying had no recharging station and he couldn't leave until he recharged. (And also because it is a well known fact that reservation clerks rule time, space, the universe, and everything.)

46 "I have a bunch of newish appliances that the electronics no longer work properly in."

Here in IL, when the non-repairable appliances die, we can't put them out in the trash anymore. We have to take them to a recycling center and pay a fee to dispose of them. E.g., $25 to throw out a TV.

48 I can start my stove burner with a match, but the oven uses a sensor that won't release fuel before the igniter is sparking, so a match won't work. I bought a half dozen ignitors and keep them in inventory. Another tip: GE gas ovens have an upper and lower ignitor, so when the often used lower goes out, one can swap in the upper (broiler) ignitor in a pinch.

But, considering where you live, aren't you already a criminal for using natural gas?

91 When they first started talking about limiting the size of the burners, i replaced my 15 year old Whirlpool range (which only had one large burner) with a Wolf. i think i won't have to buy another range in my lifetime. It was expensive, but has three burners even larger than the Whirlpool, and also has double stacked burners so you can set the flame really low. i never liked the Whirlpool controls, they took a naturally continuous flame adjustment and made it work in steps. i invariably wanted to set the flame half way between the steps.

Depending on the size of you're house and how many appliances you are running, a 1000 gallon propane tank should last 6-8 months, possible a year or more, if your house is small, say 1000sft.

There are calculators that can help you figure out your usage.

156 Most appliances are indeed garbage these days. I would say they went downhill starting in the early nineties. The moral: keep your old appliances and buy used appliances for replacements if you can.

Something tells me the planet-savers are not factoring in the energy and resource costs of producing an endless stream of disposable appliances in place of sturdy, reliable ones.

On top of that, the planet-savers want everyone to do without disposable items that make sense. So we have big, expensive, complex disposable things, but don't you dare use a straw in your drink!

The skunk has already perfected that with butyl mercaptan.
That is used in piped town gas mains to let users know if there is a methane leak. We were using it as a radical scavenger in lab reactions. At the end of the reaction, excess butyl mercaptan and solvent was removed by vacuum evaporation, with the fumes going out of a duct on the roof and into the atmosphere. I'm not sure how it got reported but the Cambridge MA gas people were out in force looking for a gas leak. They even came to our building but didn't find anything with their sniffers and we played innocent (1974-5).

Mist it with a water bottle sprayer prior to scooping. That will keep your human created dust down. You could also mist it once or twice a day as a maintenance feature to keep the cat's dust down too.

Find a dustless cat litter. Then gradually mix in the new dustless stuff over a three or four month period. The cat will get used to it gradually and should have no issues if you do it slowly enough.

I think the rest are caused by mice who set up a cozy nest in the warm confines of the homes service panel with incredibly flammable bedding material. Coldest day of winter, all those electrons flowing, mouse house catches fire. Really bad stuff starts happening then.

Check your service panel once in a while during winter. It's usually only four or six screws to pop it off and take a look.

244 I have a 4 gallon tank on a 110 line 20 feet from my bedroom shower - set to 140 degrees and I'm incredibly bored long before it runs out of hot water. The RV stuff is pretty amazing for efficiency and insulation. Ten minutes later it's ready for the next shower. Modular design thanks to me, it would take ten minutes tops to replace, for another $150 bucks. Shut off on water in, water out, pull plug, unscrew fittings, lift off, lift on, screw fittings back on, turn on, plug back in. Annual cost for electricity around a hundred bucks. I get a notice from my utility every six months comparing my electric usage versus 'efficient' neighbors and I kick their asses.

What DbZ doesn't discuss here is that tankless heaters do not heat a volume of water to a certain temperature: they heat incoming water to an increment as it goes through the core (like a car/truck radiator). So, if the incoming water is 40F, your tankless will add 20F to it, solely as an example. The water I get into the house in WI in the winter is barely above freezing. It is COLD. I measured it once it was 45F incoming. So the tankless, as that frigid water is passing through it, is trying to add another 20 degrees to it to get you a 65F shower.
They have their limitations, like electric cars.

261 With NG tankless, the trick is to limit the water flow, so you get a kind of pressurized shower with maybe SOME cold mixed in. It takes some doing. Once you have it all dialed in it's grand, endless comfortable showers.

I'm not entirely sure that is safe and it adds a whole complexity to water pressure.

It's nice that you have natural gas. That is not now nor will it ever be an option for me, no matter how many million dollars homes are on my street. So I have to settle for second place. My example is exactly that, an example, I have mine dialed in so it works quite well, but it is a single-point, so one cannot say, wash dishes in the kitchen and take a shower at the same time. Mine has a series of valves arranged like steam heat in a factory so it works as desired. I'm just saying that the electric tankless aren't as flexible, in my opinion.
Also, I do not generally take baths generally, but showers, so am not sure how that application would work out.

I just need some idea of how to flush out the old hardened stuff, get everything moving/rotating, then maybe think about taking it all apart. Without doing what I usually do with machines, which is soak everything down and maybe light it on fire.

315 The electric shower heater I saw in Costa Rica was made in Brazil, I think. Just a plain-looking plastic shower head with a thick 2-wire cord coming out of it, plugged into a wall socket near the shower. No switch was fitted. Temperature was a function of flow. Low flow=hot water, high flow=tepid water. I think it operated on the principle of electrolysis, pass current through the water, and it gets hot. Since the most direct path to ground was the supply line, there was really no shock hazard.

We're prolly not even gonna get snow this winter for the second year in a row.

327 I appreciate the suggestions today. The cat box business is just an ongoing Thing. A lot of it is The Cats who just scratch all over in the box, which is a huge storage container with a top on it. They're just messy and stir up a cloud of dust when they are in there.

The stove, they have become like cars. But unlike cars they can be piped if you really want to.

Tankless water heaters, they're a bit of a learning curve/dark art but I don't intend to ever return to a tank.

And Thanks for the suggestions on the sewing machine. I'll try some very low viscosity 'lubricant' like WD-40 or some such and soak it a little and see if it gets better, knowing it's not a replacement for a real repack.

Possibly, there are some claims that the AC creates a standing wave or a harmony with the water to heat it, I think your explanation is closer. They used them in Colombia in the 80's because not everyone had a hot water heater, even in Bogotá

And to the 'It only heats water to 140 degrees?' argument. Yeah, because your skin really likes shower water temp at 104 degrees temperature. Above that bad things happen. So calculate, as I have, how many degrees of 140 degree hot water tempered with 50+ degrees well water will last in the shower. But it is very close to where it is needed and every inch of copper is insulated.

My Bosch 125B tankless works with no plug-in: it has a piezio-electric switch that turns on the gas depending on flow. The control unit, when I took it apart, is in fact much like a carburetor but with water instead of fuel. It's a cool design.

The average water temperature in Costa Rica to the outlet is over 80F degrees. In winter my water can go as low as 45F.

Posted by: LenNeal at December 31, 2023 04:05 PM (OJ1IG)

340 To beat a dead horse, tankless and water-flow water heaters do not heat water to any specific temperature like a tank, they heat incoming water to a specific degree over what it is, coming in. That can be 10, 20, 40 degrees depending on what you want to spend in energy to heat up that water.

If the incoming water is already heated in a solar tube system (common in Latin America) to 100F than it's fine; if, like me, your water incoming is 45F (documented) you are NOT getting a 'hot shower', ever. That is my point. And 4 gallons?
A 4-gallon shower? And The Wifey complains Not?
Do explain.

342 The Bosch 1600P water heater (very similar to the 125B) will raise the water temperature 90F @ 2 gal/min, which is plenty for a single use application (i.e., one shower at a time). My incoming water temp is 55F in the winter, and my shower is plenty hot enough (I have to add a little cold water to be non-scalding).

344 My point is the NG fireball of the Bosch 125B WILL raise a 45F feed to scalding and any electric short of 440 will not.

117,000 Btu input for yours, that's Holy Shit level for a lot of people and it's going into a condensor/radiator smaller than the average automobile.

Max GPM @ 45°F Rise: 4.7
Max GPM @ 100°F Rise: 2.0

349 Oh, there is also with tankless the issue of backflow: there CANNOT be any mix into the feed. There can be zero leaks into the Hot feed from the Cold side or it confuses the sensors whether analog or electronic.
Your faucets, etc, must be in tip-top shape and cannot bleed into the other side through a tap.

355 I cooked in New York City for decades on a couple of old basic gas stoves. One you would like the burners with a match and the other one had two pilot lights for the stove top burners and another pilot light for the oven that we're always on. If they went off, you just lit a match and approach the stove and touched it to the pilot light.

These things were completely Bulletproof and there were no parts to crap out on you and no damn electricity involved whatsoever. I would give my eyeteeth to have either one of those back even though they were pretty small but I had perfect control of my heat and my flames! I hate these blasted igniters.
