How the hell does one clean wax off of something with nooks and crannies?

Sure, I can run hot water over it, and that will soften the wax enough to clean it, but the Hanukkiah has a felt base that will become saturated and probably fall off. I could stick the damned thing in the freezer and hope that the wax will harden enough so I can simply peel it off.

But there is no easy solution, and yes, I have had sleepless nights wrestling with this problem.

Or make use of the fact that metal conducts heat, and heat up other parts as hot as you can get them without damage?

Maybe dry heat, like an oven set at 250 or so?

Yoda sock gone. A heat gun, if you don't have one is a valuable tool. When it comes time to remove the old caulk around a bath tub there's nothing like it. All of 15 seconds exposure and the caulk pulls away with ease.

Warning though: Those summabitches get really really hot. Set a wooden work bench on fire in seconds kinda hot.

16 Xylene will dissolve that toot sweet. The felt base is going to be a loss whatever you do. You can probably find someone in a pathology lab to give you a bottle of used xylene.

And watch it very closely...

Also, paper towels and a heat source, like a hair dryer.
Heat melts the wax, which runs down onto the paper towel.

24 Oh it's one of those Hannukkah things. Then get a pan large enough to lay it down in it, and boil it across a few stove burners. I've done this with longish rifle parts to remove Cosmoline.

All good recommendations above but seal in zip lock before putting in freezer if you do that to minimize frost/moisture; make super toothpick from a wood shim and then carefully pick wax off; personally I just leave in sun on wax paper, upside down

My DIL's sister brought the coolest thing to the Hannukah party. They were menorahs made out of wood that could be colored in with markers. I had stickers from a Hannukah book and my half Christian, half Jewish granddaughters loved making them personal.

No, wife's best friends husband did some major damage to their home. They're a really neat tool but damn they get hot - metal melting hot. It's kinda-hard-to-believe level of hot. Distance is key. Too close, really bad. Too far away, useless. Correct distance? Amazing. It would shed that wax away in mere seconds.

Modern kerosene is also very clean and much cheaper. Kerosene is hard to find round here so torpedo heaters use Diesel instead.

No, when I was *really* single the living room was totally empty. Nothing in it at all, just the hardwood floor. I loved it. No couch, no TV, no chairs, just glorious, glorious Space. Then The Kid moved in to do remote College during Rona and took over the unused half of the house and... hasn't left. So now that space is full of cat towers, cardboard boxes and stuff for the cats. I hate it I want my glorious emptiness back.

89 Oh, there is a very current First World Problem: The Kid moved in with me ('Back Home') during Rona to do remote College and escape her mom (mostly to escape her mom), and hasn't left! I mean, my house was half unused and at one point I had completely forgotten the last time I had even gone upstairs, probably a year or more.
So I admit, a lot of usable space was totally going to waste and I really was heating it anyway. And I work nights so I recall one period when I didn't see her for at least 3 weeks.

105 Similar issue: I am currently stripping a painted interior door down to the bare wood for refinishing. I have found the for the detailed parts of the door panel insets I am reduced to using the corner of a sharpened wood chisel (1/2") to chip out the dry paint. Using paint stripper is fine for the larger flat surfaces but just causes smearing in the small grooves and channels and actually makes the paint harder to get out.

Where do I find a deserving home for these orphaned, spare, but perfectly useful ones? I can't just give them out willy-nilly. My kids have all they need from my previous gifts.

Earlier today the power went out for no apparent reason. Utility got it back on in medium speed. Not the fastest restoration but not the slowest either. Now, Hubbymayhem is redoing the power line to the shop. Old line got cut when utilities were installed in the new house. He will have to turn the power off to hook the line in at the disconnect near the meter. So I will be in n electricity free zone for the second time today.

Well, it's really not a 'problem' as such. She causes absolutely no problems for me at all. And as she is still legally a student it has rather beneficial tax benefits for me, as otherwise I have zero write-offs at all. So... It's a bizarre situation, I'm just baffled at her lack of interest in 'striking out on her own'. The house is mostly separate, so nobody trips over the other and she takes after me, being a quiet kind of person at home.

I've watched a few YouTube videos where they're trying to show off the power stored in a battery back up system and they want the highest voltage robbing tool possible. Invariably it's a heat gun. Then they plug something else in and 60 seconds later system goes down. But you get 60 seconds of 'burst' mode for some appliances to kick in and throttle back demand.

Yeah, LN as 'husband' was pretty much of a dismal failure. There were reasons for that and the fault was not all mine. But The Kid doesn't seem to think I'm some awful person which I also find baffling. I do have 3 ironclad rules:
1) Do not shoot me when I come home late (I work nights), challenge first.
2) Don't get knocked up and expect me to care for the kid.
3) NO DRUGS EVER not even pot gummies.

Use a ladle to pour the hot water over the part that can't submerge. The wax will mostly float off and what doesn't can get Hillary treatment (wipe, like with a cloth) when you pull it out still hot.

Next holiday, only use appropriately sized candles, such as tapers. The flame should burn off the melting pool of wax. She got sidetracked during Rona, a lot of 'kids' did. When she finally got her trip to Japan all her female friends had moved on, married, kids, etc. so she appointed me to go. I found that WEIRD but in Japan it got a lot of respect. Now, she's been to Japan and a bunch of other things, when during Rona her friends stayed put here. It created a serious gulf. This Rona thing really infuriaties me, not even a joke.

212 Seriously a heat gun is the way to go. Even a hair dryer would soften the wax enough to remove it. The melting threshold of wax is well within the range of orally even a hair dryer. Soften the wax then use a pick tool to remove wax being careful not to gouge the surface on candleholder OR you can ship them to my workshop and I'll have them back to you lickty split.BTW are they Silver.

285 We use dripless candles. Does leave some residue, but nothing in the candle cups. When I clean them out with a sharp pointed knife during Hanukkah week all I usually have to remove are the wicks left behind.

Whatever is left I don't bother with, and just leave it until next year. Hope everyone had a Happy Hanukkah.

286 Cheesecloth and a hot iron. The wax will "wick" up into the cloth. Move around the cloth a lot to avoid saturation. The wax will follow the heat.

287 Much like an ornate advent wreath that gets candle wax stuck in it the easiest way to remove the wax is to turn it upside down and suspend it over a bath of water in a low temp oven. The wax will loosen and be pulled off by gravity and drop into the water bath below. I'm sure wool felt can withstand the heat.

292 212 Seriously a heat gun is the way to go. Even a hair dryer would soften the wax enough to remove it. The melting threshold of wax is well within the range of orally even a hair dryer. Soften the wax then use a pick tool to remove wax being careful not to gouge the surface on candleholder OR you can ship them to my workshop and I'll have them back to you lickty split.BTW are they Silver.

Two things: buy better candles that don't drip. Use bobeches (drip catchers) at the base of the candles.

If either of these preventative measures are out of the question, then I vote for the crack pipe lighter option.

295 The freezer method might work, but night also leave a lot of wax in the engravings and require a lot of toothpick work.

Try an oven on low, perhaps 150-200F, with a pan to catch the drippings. The drippings unsuitable for gravy, unless your diet is really, really weird.

The felt will be fine, but the adhesive it uses will probably crisp up or denature, but that should be easy enough to replace - call it 3rd grade arts-and-crafts.
