Yoda sock gone. A heat gun, if you don't have one is a valuable tool. When it comes time to remove the old caulk around a bath tub there's nothing like it. All of 15 seconds exposure and the caulk pulls away with ease. Warning though: Those summabitches get really really hot. Set a wooden work bench on fire in seconds kinda hot. Xylene will dissolve that toot sweet. The felt base is going to be a loss whatever you do. You can probably find someone in a pathology lab to give you a bottle of used xylene.

Similar issue: I am currently stripping a painted interior door down to the bare wood for refinishing. I have found the for the detailed parts of the door panel insets I am reduced to using the corner of a sharpened wood chisel (1/2") to chip out the dry paint. Using paint stripper is fine for the larger flat surfaces but just causes smearing in the small grooves and channels and actually makes the paint harder to get out.

I am seriously not a very nice guy and have never been an ideal parent, but she doesn't really see me very much and seems to think having half of a decent enough house she doesn't pay much into and saves her own money is a good deal. Double up large foil baking pans. Use something to prop up the bottom part with the felt with it laying on its side in the pan. Carefully pour boiling water over it until mostly submerged. Use a ladle to pour the hot water over the part that can't submerge. The wax will mostly float off and what doesn't can get Hillary treatment (wipe, like with a cloth) when you pull it out still hot.

All good recommendations above but seal in zip lock before putting in freezer if you do that to minimize frost/moisture; make super toothpick from a wood shim and then carefully pick wax off; personally I just leave in sun on wax paper, upside down

Put it in the freezer and then use finger nails or a wooden cooking tool to gently scrape it off. You may need to repeat the process to get to all tge layers. Next holiday, only use appropriately sized candles, such as tapers. The flame should burn off the melting pool of wax. Trim the wick before lighting and GENTLY blow out the candle to avoid wax splatters on your table or use a candle snuff to extinguish the flame.

Ammonia is often used to remove floor-wax buildup ... It is also sometimes recommended for removing shoe wax ... Maybe once the big chunks of wax are removed -- employing measures of heat or extreme cold mentioned earlier -- the nooks and crannies could be cleaned out using ammonia-soaked Q-tips ... Another helpful tool during the cleaning process might be a shoe buffing cloth.

Offered for your consideration: You can NOT use the damned "smart" (non-incandescent) lights for this. First, place the Hannukiah on a flat base with sloping sides (e.g., an upside-down serving dish). Using either a regular incandescent bulb (pref. 250W or higher) or one of the old infrared 'sun lamps' clamped to an upright and pointed at approx. 45 deg. to the Hannukiah, let the heat from the light(-s) do the melty work. The wax will drip away down the slope-y sides and the felt will be unaffected. Or should be. When the maximum amount of wax removal is achieved, let it cool and then use something like UnDu or Goo-Gone (which is a really terrible product - but it works) to remove the remaining wax-ish film. What? Why yes, I do accept checks as well as MasterCard ... oh no - no tip is necessary.

I'll watch ballistic dummy tests all day long, but the stuff where a guy who got blown up is breaking down the accident in slow motion, blood, fire and shrapnel flying. Yeah, no. Like the Kentucky Ballistics .50 explosion a couple years ago.'
I've seen people fall on AP land mines, it's kind of impressive. The KB dude, he has all but admitted he got stupid. Anyway so far these are not First World Problems! Thankfully. And one of my First World Problems got solved! When I got here the office was BLASTING 'Lite Pop' and Christmas Music throughout the entire building through the sound system so I 'fired off an email' and Lo, 3 hours later, they turned that shit off. Fuzzy towel and an iron set to "cotton". Just put the towel over it, iron the towel until it absorbs the wax, and then take it off.

Culinary torch. Plumber's torch with propane, hold it further away.

What did Gazans use for light before candles...Jewish Electricity.

We use dripless candles. Does leave some residue, but nothing in the candle cups. When I clean them out with a sharp pointed knife during Hanukkah week all I usually have to remove are the wicks left behind.
Whatever is left I don't bother with, and just leave it until next year. Hope everyone had a Happy Hanukkah. Posted by: molecular acid at December 17, 2023 07:29 PM (kvDvI) 286
Cheesecloth and a hot iron. The wax will "wick" up into the cloth. Move around the cloth a lot to avoid saturation. The wax will follow the heat.

Much like an ornate advent wreath that gets candle wax stuck in it the easiest way to remove the wax is to turn it upside down and suspend it over a bath of water in a low temp oven. The wax will loosen and be pulled off by gravity and drop into the water bath below. I'm sure wool felt can withstand the heat.

If it's solid silver heat is ok. If it is electroplated, heat will ruin the wax core.

Freezer. Wax will freeze and constrict away from the filigree - hopefully.

I would try lighter fluid. It seemed to work well on a small sample just now.

165 On other hand next time the candlesticks are used what's going to happen?
Wax is going to drip all over so why not get ahead of the game? Posted by: Skip at December 17, 2023 03:01 PM (fwDg9) winning answer Posted by: m at December 18, 2023 01:20 AM (ANXUW) 292
212 Seriously a heat gun is the way to go. Even a hair dryer would soften the wax enough to remove it. The melting threshold of wax is well within the range of orally even a hair dryer. Soften the wax then use a pick tool to remove wax being careful not to gouge the surface on candleholder OR you can ship them to my workshop and I'll have them back to you lickty split.BTW are they Silver.

I'm always late to the party...
Two things: buy better candles that don't drip. Use bobeches (drip catchers) at the base of the candles. If either of these preventative measures are out of the question, then I vote for the crack pipe lighter option. Posted by: White Punk at December 18, 2023 07:04 AM (dLiGu) 294
Freezer. Freezer, freezer, freezer. It won't damage the candelabra, and the wax will pop right off.
Posted by: Alice at December 18, 2023 11:06 AM (oFuPp) 295
The freezer method might work, but night also leave a lot of wax in the engravings and require a lot of toothpick work.
Try an oven on low, perhaps 150-200F, with a pan to catch the drippings. The drippings unsuitable for gravy, unless your diet is really, really weird. The felt will be fine, but the adhesive it uses will probably crisp up or denature, but that should be easy enough to replace - call it 3rd grade arts-and-crafts.
