here are my two little felines Dini & Smudge.
Dini is the tabby, Smudge is the Maine Coon with a long tail. Dini laying
on her back was one of times when Smudge was leaving her alone and she
could chillax. Smudge, up in the window, is looking for bugs to torment or
birds that fly by. Being close to Christmas, the last pic is the two of
them hanging out near the Christmas Tree. Thankfully they don't climb the
tree, but we are still hesitant to put up our nice ornaments. The tree
skirt, made by my late grandmother, is a favorite for both of them, for
different reasons. Dini loves laying on it, Smudge likes to hide under it.

Merry Christmas to you K.T., the cobs, and Horde.

Our Country is Screwed

Your Christmas tree is lucky that your kitties are so lovely. Their personalities show in the other photos, too.

The tree skirt is also lovely. No wonder the cats like it, too! Merry Christmas!

My little buddy Scout passed away last week. He's buried beside his big buddy Kasper. RIP guys, we'll meet again soon enough.

Oh, so sorry to hear about the loss of your little buddy. Nice that Scout has Kasper to keep him company on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

The Universal Cat Distribution System felt that we needed a new cat, so it brought Serena to our back door a month ago. We first saw her talking with our current boss, Salem, through the screen. Then she began negotiating with the hoomans; the negotiations were very one-sided.

She was about 8-9 months old. No chip, not spayed, very friendly, and very very hungry.

A month later and it's clear that the Cat Distribution System put her in the right place. Even Salem is getting used to her, even if he's too protective of his spot under the Christmas Tree.

Merry Christmas to all the pets, their hoomans, posters, and lurkers.

Bailey_Roo.gif

Hi K.T.!

Last year we lost both our dogs, one in March and one in November. You were kind enough to memorialize them for us in the Pet Morons thread. It meant the world to us, and we can't thank you enough.

Even though I said I did not want to go through the heartache of putting down any more animals, my wife insisted the house was too empty with nothing to come home to, and we rescued two new dogs. Their 'Gotcha Day' was New Year's Eve, 2022.

Bailey ended up in the shelter as a product of divorce and Rufus...or Roo as we call him...had what the shelter owners said was 'not a good early life'. They are both male and both Beagles. Bailey is a smaller stature Lemon Beagle and Rufus is a Standard Beagle. Bailey acclimated quite well, but Roo had a LOT of anxiety. He chewed many furnishings, ate the side of our recliner and made our back yard resemble the moon. It was both challenging and heart-breaking seeing him like he was. Our vet put him on an all-natural calmer, which did take the edge off a bit. We persevered and figured out what helped him and what triggered him. He is now off the calmer and has become a model Beagle citizen! They are both excellent with strange humans and strange dogs, and are two of the sweetest boys you'll meet!

So, in honor of their one-year Gotcha Day Anniversary, we'd love to see them in an upcoming Pet Thread! We look forward to reading about and seeing everyone's fur babies every week! As always, keep up the great work!

Reene and Phil

Glad to hear that Roo is settling in. Both of them look absolutely charming. Thanks for sharing their rescue stories with us. And thanks for loving them.

From Monday:

This is Tipsy, so named because of the snow-white tip of her tail. She was our faithful companion for 17 years, very affectionate and a skilled hunter. I would often wake up in the morning to find her curled up and purring under my arm.

When my late wife was in hospice with cancer, she missed Tipsy and asked me to bring her a picture for her bedside. Tipsy was a comfort to both of us in the hardest of times.

Tipsy passed away last night. I buried her in my front yard next to an orange tree. Her eyes were still open, as if she was still looking at me with that cool, inscrutable look that was so familiar. She will be missed.

Toad-0

So sorry to learn that you have lost Tipsy at such a hard time. She was a lovely cat. Please stay in touch.

Puppies had their first foray outside today. We cordoned off a small section on and just off the porch. They were a bit uncertain at first but started exploring a bit.

The idea is that they do their business outside instead of inside their pen in the house.

__________

A man and his dog are wandering along a country road. The man realizes they have both died.

They come across a gleaming castle surrounded by a high wall. The man says to the attendant, "Where am I? I'm feeling thirsty." The attendant replies, "This is Heaven. Come in and sample our finest libations." The man asks, "Can my dog come in too?" The attendant frowns, "No pets allowed."

The two continue on their way and come to a cabin beside the road. The man asks, "Can we get a drink?" The fellow on the porch says, "Sure, there's a pump over there and a bowl for your dog." After both have refreshed themselves, the man asks, "Where are we?" The reply: "This is Heaven." The man says, "But the place down the road said they were Heaven." "Oh, no. That's Hell. We use it to screen out people who would leave their friends behind."

29 Afternoon and an early Merry Christmas to all the pet people!

The reaction of the jaguar to catnip could hardly be called unexpected. I've seen many a household cat react that way, bumping and rubbing his head amid the weed, doing that "fleering" thing where they open their mouths to get the better scent into their nostrils, etc. The big cats are more like our small cats than they are different.

George is the biggest and most outgoing puppy. Spark is the smallest but feisty all the same. Zeus and Phoenix are more placid. Show quality aside, Phoenix bids fair to be the handsomest of the litter, with a rich brindle and lovely mascara around his eyes. Of course, the little girl Puff will outsmart all of them.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 23, 2023 04:18 PM (MoZTd)

36 OCIS, your Dini's tail looks much like that of my little Siberian Dagny, except Dagny's is longer-haired. I call her Stubby Tail every now and then. But she is developing so strongly into a stocky, thick-furred cat that I also call her "Forest Feral."

If our pets aren't in heaven waiting for us, then I want to go where they went.

Well, when I get there, I assume there will be questions of ownership and jurisdiction. I've had multiple cats, and no doubt there'll be ructions. "Back off, Black Cat, he's *my human!" "Stick a fish in it, Fat Boy, he's *mine*!"

37 The Christmas kittehs, OMG!

love the pic of felines near tree, makes me miss my cat buddies. Aren't they so cute when they're posing for their holiday portrait?

And the TN beagle, love her too! My neighbor has a beagle and when he's out in the yard he bays at anybody walking by. I've watched him and he can hear the footsteps of the pedestrian before they come into view, so he hurries to take up his post at the fence. Whenever he sees me and yells at me I always greet him because I feel like he just wants some acknowledgment.

My dad had beagles because he was a hunter.

38 Next year, if I at last have my house, I would like to put up a Christmas tree for the first time in decades. I've always held off on it because of living in small-ish apartments, and of course because of my various cats. Probably there will be a way to weight it, as someone here suggested, and to anchor it to the wall or ceiling.

I know Stirling and Dagny will find it fascinating. Maybe too fascinating.

50 I was curious about the tortoise, also....
Found a couple of articles online about the "family":
The picture above is of one of the babies. The article I found had that pic, as well as one of the proud parents. That species starts at around an inch and a half long, and can grow to sixteen inches. The shells keep that pattern, but it fades quite a bit. I think it's a pretty striking look on the hatchlings.

So many enjoyable bits in today's pet thread. Thank you, as always, K.T., for your hard work and kind words.

And I'm so very glad to see the progress that Delilah's puppies are making. They seem huge for their age! Sending Hadrian thanks for keeping us all updated. Wishing for robust health for all.

51 Scout and Kasper. Thanks KT. I need to pour a marker for Scout. I don't remember exactly when we found him but I think he was about 13.

Now we just have Bruno. The food and pack competition have disappeared. Before there was no way Bruno would leave any food in his bowl, even if Scout didn't want it.

52 This is a bit gory, but I'm puzzled by it.

Last night when I went out onto our porch to pick up the cat bowls I noticed several splotches of blood. Fresh. None of the cats were around, but neither my wife nor I heard any sort of commotion. Our living room is "right there."

This morning the cats were fine. No injuries. No other animals that we know of were on the porch. Nothing showed up on the security cameras either.

Was this possibly from one of their kills? That wasn't picked up on video either, but I presume it could have happened anyway.

And it's not little drops of blood either. It's that and a couple splotches about the size of a 3x5 card.

55 "Was this possibly from one of their kills?"
I'm sure you've checked the cats for wounds. They have baggy skin which can make a wound unapparent unless you look closely. I recall a cat I had was walking around with a big wound and I never knew it until I petted him. Turned out he got a big laceration somehow.

56 Thought I might drop a Retractable Leash review for any that might be interested.

Number one thing is, they all have cloth straps. If you don't watch constantly, our Daisy can and will just chew through it in no time.

Flexi brand retractables. Had two. Only complaint is the handle part is a bit small, can't get four fingers through it if I'm wearing gloves. (Just retired one before it got chewed all the way through.)

Daughter got us a replacement, Hartz brand. Same complaint about the handle. The clip is plastic and small, kind-of hard to clip on, and harder to get off, if the dog is wiggling and my fingers are stiff. Also, it doesn't retract very quickly, so it's too easy for Daisy to get it tangled around her legs.

Yesterday, SonM gave us a new one that he'd bought to use with his malamute. Coastal brand "Power Walker" for large dogs. The handle is just enough bigger I can get four gloved fingers through it, although probably not with my heavier winter gloves. Retracts quickly. And the clip is larger than the Flexi, easier to get on and off miss wiggles. Rating: satisfactory.

Guess maybe there's something we could add to keep her from chewing through the strap.

64 Happy Saturday pet slaves. A week ago Friday I thought 26 yr Paso Fino Lady might be a goner, found she had tried to jump mesh pen fence from the outside where it was only 32 inches high and her hind legs were hung up on the fence with her head on the ground. I got the wire cut pretty quickly; then had to go get tractor as the end of the top pole from the retaining wall had rolled and was on her hip. A couple hours later with the vet's help and knowledge and some muscle help from a couple of neighbors to get her pulled around to a better position Lady got up.

Lady is doing well now. She was already retired from any riding for a wonky hip but she went trotting today when I put her outside the pen to have the other horses clean up the hay stalks. Lady is a picky eater in her old age, gets lots of complete feed and 24 hr access to hay to pick at and then I feed what she leave to the other horses.

65 Martini Farmer, maybe a bird that flew into a window, bled there, and flew or crawled away?

67 Condolences to all who have lost a pet, especially difficult at this time of year. We had to put Harli down 2 years ago today.

71 I'm not sure why but this weblog is loading extremely slow for me.

Is anyone else having this issue or is it a problem on my end?

I'll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

72 There once was a canine so pretty
She said, I declare I'm a kitty!
But the Tamil Man said,
With a shake of his head,
It is fooLISHness and stupiDITY.

75 S. Lynn - I've never met a dobie I didn't fall in love with. Such loving dogs. Very sorry to hear about Geddy's diagnosis.

77 Oh My. I had a Maine Coon named Smudge! And he looked just like this one. And Tipsy looks exactly like my tortoise colored (half Siamese) cat names Sprocket. She used to sit just like that -- bread loaf-style. Great memories.
