This is an extraordinary painting. The brilliant color, the way the artist captures the sense of motion in the many figures and the level of detail in people and objects. Pieter Aertsen does others in this style combining figures with detailed landscapes or still lifes. It would interesting to see his paintings in person. Each one could take hours to get all the features and how he combines them so effectively. I can see how Aertsen would be so influential on later Flemish painters.

The subject matter portrayal annoys me.
Rich people throw piles of clothing and some food into the middle off the street and party and laugh as poor people with their kids scramble for the rags and scraps. Part of my enjoyment of the art thread is seeing parallels and influences between different artists, often in different times. Today's painting reminds me of a Rembrandt crowd scene like The Night Watch and even the busier street scenes by Norman Rockwell with so many people and varied detailed objects.
Just speculation on my part but fun. Posted by: JTB at December 18, 2023 09:50 AM (7EjX1) 93
I believe MAT XXV refers to Matthew 25, which contains several parables. One of them says "35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’"

In Dobbs, Alito quote a source from the 1200s and another from the 1500s — not at all American, and the latter one opined on witches. I'm just as furious now as I was in late June of 2022. Wtf?! Army chiefs have launched a stinging attack on families who raised concerns over the relocation of Afghan "refugees" on to military estates. Soldiers' wives living in service accommodation in Wiltshire complained after Afghans were reportedly seen taking pictures of their children. The alarmed women at Larkhill, Wiltshire, said they felt unsafe and argued the Afghans' behaviour raised safeguarding issues. Although the social media group chat posts were sympathetic rather than inflammatory, the Ministry of Defence has threatened troops and civilian staff with disciplinary action should they complain publicly again! -- Daily Mail Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at December 18, 2023 10:46 AM (2yu8s) 310

How can homelessness be at record highs with unemployment low and 'joblessness' low?
--- I am absolutely certain, with no proof, that they have significantly changed the way they count unemployment. Like they did with inflation. I feel like it's something to do with changing the way they determine someone is "no longer looking" which removes them from the count. I'll bet it's gone from basically anyone on unemployment to something like only those unemployed who have had a job interview in the last 30 days are counted as "looking." Still unemployed, still applying but no interviews = no longer looking and not counted as unemployed.
