Is Harvard President and Enabler of Antisemitism Claudine Gay a Plagiarist?

Looks like it, says Chris Rufo and Christopher Brunnet.

Harvard president Claudine Gay has problems. Touted as the first black woman to run the nation's most prestigious university, she assumed leadership with high expectations, but her tenure, which began this summer, has been mired in scandal. As dean and then president, Gay has been accused of bullying colleagues, suppressing free speech, overseeing a racist admissions program, and, following the Hamas terror campaign against Israel, failing to stand up to rampant anti-Semitism on campus.

We have obtained exclusive documentation demonstrating that President Gay may face yet another problem: plagiarism of sections of her Ph.D. dissertation, which would violate Harvard's own stated policies on academic integrity. (We reached out to President Gay for comment, but received no response.)

Gay published her dissertation, "Taking Charge: Black Electoral Success and the Redefinition of American Policies," in 1997, as part of her doctorate in political science from Harvard. The paper deals with white-black political representation and racial attitudes. As evaluated under the university's plagiarism policy, the paper contains at least three problematic patterns of usage and citation.

First, Gay lifts an entire paragraph nearly verbatim from Lawrence Bobo and Franklin Gilliam's paper, "Race, Sociopolitical Participation, and Black Empowerment," while passing it off as her own paraphrase and language. Here is the original, from Bobo and Gilliam:


Using 1987 national sample survey data . . . the results show that blacks in high-black-empowerment areas--as indicated by control of the mayor's office--are more active than either blacks living in low-empowerment areas or their white counterparts of comparable socioeconomic status. Furthermore, the results show that empowerment influences black participation by contributing to a more trusting and efficacious orientation to politics and by greatly increasing black attentiveness to political affairs.

And here is the language from Gay's work:


Using 1987 survey data, Bobo and Gilliam found that African-Americans in "high black-empowerment" areas--as indicated by control of the mayor's office--are more active than either African-Americans in low empowerment areas or their white counterparts of comparable socioeconomic status. Empowerment, they conclude, influences black participation by contributing to a more trusting and efficacious orientation towards politics and by greatly increasing black attentiveness to political affairs.

I feel like I'm reading it in the original Jonah Goldbergese.


Though Gay does provide a reference to the original authors, she uses their verbatim language, with a few trivial synonym substitutions, without providing quotation marks. This constitutes a clear violation of Harvard's policy, which states: "When you paraphrase, your task is to distill the source's ideas in your own words. It's not enough to change a few words here and there and leave the rest; instead, you must completely restate the ideas in the passage in your own words. If your own language is too close to the original, then you are plagiarizing, even if you do provide a citation."

Gay repeats this violation throughout the document, again using work from Bobo and Gilliam, as well as passages from Richard Shingles, Susan Howell, and Deborah Fagan, which she reproduces nearly verbatim, without quotation marks.

Second, Gay appears to lift material from scholar Carol Swain in at least two instances. In one passage, summarizing the distinction between "descriptive representation" and "substantive representation," she copies the phrasing and language nearly verbatim from Swain's book Black Faces, Black Interests, without providing a citation of any kind.

This is going to be a big ol' problem for Gay -- because Carol Swain herself is blowing the whistle and alleging plagiarism. Or, at least, of taking her words without citing her.

If all of this sounds like Harvard went out and hired a nigh-random black woman because their DEI officials demanded they do so, that's because that's exactly what happened.

I learned from someone with first person knowledge of the @Harvard president search that the committee would not consider a candidate who did not meet the DEI office's criteria.

The same was likely true for other elite universities doing searches at the same time, creating an even more limited universe of DEI-eligible presidential candidates.

Shrinking the pool of candidates based on required race, gender, and/or sexual orientation criteria is not the right approach to identifying the best leaders for our most prestigious universities.

And it is also not good for those awarded the office of president who find themselves in a role that they would likely not have obtained were it not for a fat finger on the scale.

I have been called brave for my tweets over the last few weeks. The same could be said for those called out Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare.

I don't think it will be long before we look back on the last few years of free speech suppression and the repeated career-ending accusations of racist for those who questioned the DEI movement.

We are all shortly going to realize that the DEI era is the McCarthy era Part II.

IIRC, she was on welfare while getting her undergrad degree, went on to a Ph.D. and after getting tenure became very conservative. So the works cited were likely from her pre-conservative days when she was a liberal scholar.

She's not as prominent as others across the country, but she's an outspoken conservative in Tennessee.

(She also got her degree/Ph.D. as a "non-traditional student". I think she was in her late 20s/30s when she got her degree. Possibly single-mom, but I'm fuzzy on that knowledge. Would be a great story, but since she turned her back on liberalism, the left wants to ignore her achievements.)

70 Gay seems like the kind of person who deserves a headache, so if this gives her one, fine by me.

But I have a hard time getting worked up about this. So long as the citation is there, credit has been given where credit is due. Unless the borrowed (and altered, albeit barely) prose is somehow noteworthy in its own right, this seems like very small taters. The kind of thing that should be corrected in future editions, if it's a published work, but without too much in the way of consequences. It's sloppy and dumb, but not a grave moral offense. And in the academic context in particular, it's especially trivial because no one is reading most of this dreck anyway.

This is actually a good point though. Some subjects- you are always just parroting and summarizing and rewording an argument you found persuasive in a text or you looked for citations that mirrored your own conclusion. It is not exactly original.

Gay's PhD was in political science. For the most part, you have theorists or empiricists with different expectations. If you read a PhD thesis in political theory, it runs long simply because one has to engage in extensive form the thoughts and writings of others. If you read an empiricist thesis, it is actually fairly common to use existing datasets regarding voting which I guess was her dissertation combined with new methodology. Gary King's research (her mentor) aimed at the ecological fallacy problem and he supposedly developed a better ecological regression model.

I am guessing that a substantial amount of the plagiarism allegations come from the review of literature section or perhaps the discussion of results but don't really care enough to dig up her dissertation to read it.

Let's say you are doing a history term paper on... the effects of the Stalinist military purge immediately preceding Barbarossa. This was one I did for a seminar in college. Nine people in the class. We could choose any topic as long as it related to the Stalin period. Another guy in the class took the exact opposite conclusion I did. I said it had a massive detrimental effect on soviet military performance because of the depth (down to the sergeant level) and breadth of the purge- when it takes something like 20 years experience to develop a good non-com experience level (sorry, I forget the cite- it was 28 years ago.)

He took the exact opposite position. It did not make much difference. We both had citations and material to back up our argument. Who was right?

This is my point, in science, someone is right and someone is wrong. With this shit, how many cites actually count as valid research and if you do not have to be right, who cares?

She had to show him the steps she took to write the paper, all of the research she had done. It was insulting. He did back down when she showed him the proof.

You submit the same paper to Professor A and Professor B. Professor A submits the paper to "blackboard". Blackboard doesn't find any instances of plagiarism but it adds your paper to its database. If you do voting studies, you pretty much have to use public datasets of voting for your work. Ecological regression is actually used in voting rights litigation and a better method would have been useful. However, it appeared that Gary King's methodology did not in fact improve on prior regression models and he is a controversial subject in methodology because of it.

The problem was this--in voting research, you have aggregate level data but to reach questions of how individuals voted--you must then figure out a way to disaggregate the voting data. Once you have tenure, you don't have to do anything to keep it. In a decent department, if you rest on the oars, you'll be deprecated for it, so there's a real incentive to keep going.

That is a more esoteric argument but essentially the idea is that if you reuse something one should cite oneself as well (this can come into play also because of copyright reasons as the prior work may be copyrighted). One amusing legal case involved John Fogerty being sued for copying his own work when he wrote and performed The Old Man Down the Road. The copyright holder, Saul Zaentz, claimed it impermissibly copied Run Through the Jungle by CCR also written by John Fogerty. Jury found for Fogerty after he spent time on the stand explaining the limitations of swamp rock and its conventions.

Asshole prof thought he was the expert on Cass Gilbert, but I found a whole pile of research and info that he had missed, and when I used it to write my paper, he assumed I couldn't have done that. He HAD to be smarter and more informed than his students, after all.

Turns out the asshole only had the job because his wife's dad gave all kinds of money to the Art History department. Hell, if I could find that research, and this was long before internet, he certainly could have, had he tried.

I objected right up to the Dean, who then asked to see the proof that I had plagiarized. There was none. All my stuff was cited.

A real scholar would have been interested in the scholarship, not blame the researcher. I dropped out of the rest of my Art History courses and told him to piss up a rope.

My boss got in a bit of trouble when he was in graduate school working on his doctorate. He had submitted a paper to iThenticate because he was testing it out. However, when he submitted the Assignment, his professor was using Turnitin/iThenticate. As a result, my boss's paper was flagged as plagiarism, even though it was completely unintentional. He had to contact Turnitin to get the original paper removed from their database.

I would imagine the difficulty lies in unconsciously recalling something you'd read a long time before.

I used to referee a great many papers (roughly one a day), and to give the submitted manuscripts to my students to "review" (although I'd already submitted my review).

I did this for two reasons: 1) to teach them how to review papers, as I'd critique their reviews (e.g., "this paper is nice, but it could be nicer"), and 2) so that if I have a great idea later they can remind me that it was in the paper they "reviewed," which I had forgotten consciously by then. It was insurance against inadvertently ripping someone off.

Not quite--one of the problems has been that Gay has never released her datasets from her published work and that Gary King's methodology 'advance' was not necessary a better one.

About the best you can achieve in a lot of the soft sciences is track odds because people are perverse and have volition. Essentially the problem with social sciences is ratty data; the problem with lab science is both dishonesty and trivial results. Think the guy with the record for most published was a chemist at a research institution and most of his papers were in fact trivial in applications.

It will happen around 8:20PM EST there. If the weather cooperates, if you're near the center of that path, you'll see Betelgeuse appear to wink out for about 10 seconds.

His job....which is to formerly make the recommendation to the DOJ to indict. Granted, the DOJ will likely ignore it or stall any action. But, to not proceed with the process encourages the behavior even more. I'm not naive. I know the DOJ is compromised for this very reason...but to avoid the confrontation altogether is equal to a surrender.

That’s notbwhatbitbwas but to give an idea of the closeness. And the papers I wrote applied to both classes. So I dunno why can you not submit the same thing for both classes?

I once got accused of plagarizing / cheating in an English class in High School. The teacher had a policy that you could re-write and improve the grade for spelling/grammar errors he'd marked and I did that and turned it in, and he sternly gave it back with a note saying "This is very similar to another paper".. when I told him it was a rewrite he gave me the A.
