7 Had to look this one up:
Filippo di ser Brunellesco di Lippo Lapi (1377 – 15 April 1446), commonly known as Filippo Brunelleschi (/ˌbruːnəˈlɛski/ BROO-nə-LESK-ee, Italian: [fiˈlippo brunelˈleski]) and also nicknamed Pippo by Leon Battista Alberti,[4] was an Italian architect, designer, goldsmith and sculptor. He is considered to be a founding father of Renaissance architecture. He is recognized as the first modern engineer, planner, and sole construction supervisor.[5][6] In 1421, Brunelleschi became the first person to receive a patent in the Western world.[7][8] He is most famous for designing the dome of the Florence Cathedral, and for the mathematical technique of linear perspective in art which governed pictorial depictions of space until the late 19th century and influenced the rise of modern science.[9][10] His accomplishments also include other architectural works, sculpture, mathematics, engineering, and ship design.[6] Most surviving works can be found in Florence.

The reason these missiles have been so hard to destroy is that the IDF has found that, literally, every mosque, every school, every hospital, every clinic, and every UN building in all of Gaza was stocked full of ready to fire Hamas missiles. (they have released pictures of captured stockpiles) Accordingly, the IDF is well on its way towards capturing and/or destroying every mosque, every school, every hospital, every clinic, and every UN building in all of Gaza. But you can see why this takes quite a bit of time.

A UN commissioner was complaining bitterly a couple days ago that Israel has now destroyed over 80 UN facilities located inside Gaza.

Walks of Italy dot com: The Florence Duomo Unveiled: 7 Fascinating Historical Facts

#4. By 1380, most of the Florence Cathedral was complete, except for the challenging dome. It wasn’t until 1420 that city leaders organized a competition to find an engineer for the task.

Enter Brunelleschi, who boldly claimed he could design the perfect dome but kept his methods secret to avoid competition. He declared he wouldn’t use traditional wooden support, a costly option due to shipping expenses.

This was met with skepticism, but Brunelleschi challenged his critics to prove their own expertise by making an egg stand upright on a flat surface without any assistance. After everyone failed to do so, Brunelleschi took the egg, slightly cracked its bottom to create a flat surface, and easily made it stand upright. He then explained that, just like the egg, his dome could be constructed using a similarly simple and clever method.

Ultimately won the bid with his innovative plan that sparked imagination.

170 For anyone interested in Florence, the early Renaissance, and Brunelleschi, The Feud That Sparked The Renaissance is a great read typhat details the rivalry of Brunelleschi and Ghiberti for the commission to create the doors of the Baptistry adjacent to the Duomo.

Ghiberti won out and created one of the early Renaissance's great masterpieces, the so-called Gates of Paradise. Copies are still in place today.

Brunelleschi may have had the last laugh when he won the commission for the dome. His engineering feat in figuring out how to cover the immense span of the Duomo is a work of genius whose principles were later stolen borrowed by Michelangelo for the dome of St. Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican. They were also copied for the dome on the U.S. Capitol.

Would make the gerontocracy even worse. I'm all for limiting the franchise, but would rather have it be based on skin in the game. If you have some (you're a net payer of taxes), you get to vote. If you don't, you don't. And property-related things - tax millage, zoning regimes, etc. - should be voted on only by property owners.

I think it was propaganda to assuage their own people - Israeli and Arab polling (FWIW) was showing a slide in support for Hamas in Gaza, because people perceived that Hamas was just taking money and not killing any Jews.

I think they thought the Jews would knuckle under like usual, and they could please their Iranian masters with a big, flashy killing rampage, while also scoring an agitprop win with the home crowd, by broadcasting their handiwork.

100%. Our multifarious age of majority is insane. You're a grownup or you aren't. If you're experienced enough to get married and buy property and own long arms and go to war, you're experienced enough for pistols and booze and gambling. If you're not experienced or responsible enough to not be on your parents' health plan at 25, then you're not responsible enough to vote or buy property or get married or have a gun or drink or gamble.

One age. One. 16, 18, 21, whatever - just *one.*

262 The other amazing thing about the original MS is that James Coburn's Britt, the knife-and-gun man, speaks only about nine words in his first two scenes. Nearly all of his communications are by pointing, nodding, and knife-throwing. He speaks more later, but he remains pretty laconic, even for a Western movie character, and has less dialog, I think, than all the other six.

At Walmart and Kroger's deli, I can ask them to cut it on (e.g.) 'Slice Nr 12', which is about the halfway point for the slice thickness of their deli equipment. 'Slice Nr 25' gets me a whole slice that's about ¾ to 1" thick. I can take that home and cube it to use when I make red beans or other dishes. Worse.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Good word for it, and that's the point. The government is an unassailable and unapproachable monster that sits in the middle of town and exudes malice from every pore. It is *supposed* to feel evil and unclean. It is *supposed* to fill the rube with discomfort and revulsion and fear. That's its purpose.

345 National Socialism (NAZI) = International Socialism (Marxism).

No difference, both espouse socialism as their main tenet. Both lead to totalitarian disaster for the people who live under its rule. Both are murderous. AND both are left wing. This idea that National Socialism is right wing is an asinine construct of leftest propaganda.

348 You see a lot of giant feet, and out of scale statuary, in Renaissance and romantic views of Rome. Every aspiring architect in Italy went around sorting through the rubble for pieces to take home and put up on a plinth.

There are many engravings and sketches of workshops choc a bloc with giant stone body part leftovers. It was...a thing.
