Though it came uncomfortably close to that. What started with an oil leak escalated in the course of a single minute to an engine exploding with such violence that a piece of the turbine demolished a brick wall on the ground 7000 feet below.

I deal with failure cascades like this at my day job, but the worst I have to worry about is angry customers, not dead ones.
A Harvard "disinformation researcher", one of the lead "journalists" covering the "Facebook Papers" "leaked" by "whistleblower" Frances Haugen has accused the university of buckling to Facebook's half a billion dollar donation and canning her ugly, worthless, XXXXL arse. (Columbia Journalism Review)

To unpack that a little:

Disinformation researchers are book burners.
Journalists are increasingly also book burners.
The Facebook Papers were a political hit job.
Frances Haugen was a paid assassin who wasn't very good at her work.

So all in all it's a feel good story except for the bit where Harvard got to keep the money.

That's probably not good.

12 Someone yesterday, possibly OilfieldRando or a similar account, posted a possible good reason why we're having trouble with air traffic controllers, and no surprise it's Obama's fault.

Obama decided black workers should make up the same % of air traffic controller jobs that they do federal jobs (which is higher than their population) so they enacted new rules where you get 15 points if in HS your worst subject was science, or 10 points if you'd been out of work over a year. Consider you got 0 points for having an AIRTRAFFIC CONTROLLER LICENSE or 2 pilot's license. So a moron who can't get a job already came in 25 points higher than an actual genius with an air traffic license from an accredited school.

They also completely dumped a list of 1,000 candidates who were in line for jobs, in order to put the new test as the standard.

Except for the identity politics stuff, I've always felt that about air travel. Its being crowded and expensive and a major hassle in every department has only added to the enormous hairball.

24 'Tis 62 F. now, so we didn't get as cool as the weather mavens predicted. It did rain, but there's no indication of the "heavy rain" they also predicted. Another cup of coffee, and I'll decide if I want to go work out.

Stirling the big black cat greeted me in bed, though he didn't milk-tread -- hasn't in a little while. It'll be a shame if he's outgrown that. Little Dagny La Siberienne is grooming her fur under the reading light to my left. Almost time to feed them.

I hit up the Aldi store yesterday, and my grocery shopping is done. All I need to pick up today at Walmart or an auto parts store is an oil filter for this week's oil change.

I am regularly nagged about what I want for Christmas. The problem is that I've gotten to 29, there's very little I want. And asking for a day off is impossible.

So far, we have been lucky. Eventually someone's (a lot of someones) luck is going to run out. With a little bit of luck, it will be two cargo jets, and not two widebody jetliners full of passengers.

I ask Miss Linda, and she won't tell me. I pointed out a couple of pipe tobaccos as suggestions for her, and I'll probably get a book on living with cats. So I went ahead and bought myself a pipe I liked and have ordered new silver-painted wheels for the Buick.

I need to talk to her about my retiring, and show her the nice houses I've found on Realtor in KY and IN. For some reason I can't find the right moment to do either. Pretty sure her enthusiasm for the relocation will be zero instead of the "Hell yes! When can we do it?" that I'm praying for.

31 As far as Xmas shopping, I have one former colleague from work, and one member of my former writing group, that I'd like to give gifts to. And no doubt I will hit Ace's tip jar with a good donation.

Like Hadrian, I've reached the point where there's not much I want. Except to flee Da Swamp and buy my own house in a better and safer place.

Just read the link discussing the Quantas flight and it's investigation. Nicely done. The crew and the aircraft design group deserve every bit of praise received.

People in aviation engineering often times bitch about the regulations but almost everyone of those regs is written in the blood from lessons learned. And to this day, I swear most folks underestimate the fragility of the relationship between the manufacturer and the regulator.
