I knew Harvard and the other Poison Ivies had deep pockets. But this is astounding.

Harvard University announced Tuesday that under-fire President Claudine Gay will keep her job — even after reportedly losing more than $1 billion in donations since her disastrous congressional testimony about antisemitism.

The Harvard Corporation — the university’s highest governing body — made its announcement Tuesday following night-long talks between Gay and university leaders, a source familiar with the decision told the student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson.

“As members of the Harvard Corporation, we today reaffirm our support for President Gay’s continued leadership of Harvard University. Our extensive deliberations affirm our confidence that President Gay is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing,” the group said in a statement.

Panasonic’s New Powder-Powered Batteries Will Supercharge EVs
A company working with Tesla’s main US battery supplier has silicon-based tech that could soon give electric cars 500-mile ranges and charge refills in just 10 minutes.
Sila, a Californian company cofounded in 2011 by Tesla’s seventh staffer, is going to supply Panasonic with a US-made silicon powder for EV batteries that could banish range anxiety, slash charge times, and even reduce reliance on China.

Panasonic’s main US customer is Tesla, and produces around 10 percent of EV batteries globally. Last year, Sila signed a supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz for its new long-range G-class electric SUV, expected to debut in 2025. (The German automaker led Sila’s Series E funding round in 2019.)

Sila’s Titan Silicon anode powder consists of micrometer-sized particles of nano-structured silicon and replaces graphite in traditional lithium-ion batteries. This switch-out for EVs could soon enable 500-mile nonstop trips and 10-minute recharges. What’s more, the anode swap doesn’t require new manufacturing techniques. The black powder already powers the five-day battery life of the latest Whoop activity-tracking wearable.

Novel legal theory for tonight's Genius Award Winner.

Alleged Iowa tree thief claims protection by England’s Charter of the Forest

An 800-year-old English charter that was hugely consequential for establishing rights of people to use public lands also protects a rural Rolfe man accused of illegally cutting down and stealing dozens of trees from a wildlife management area in northwest Iowa, the man’s attorney argues.

9 A months-long investigation by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Dangerous Drugs Team resulted in one of the largest illegal fentanyl seizures in state history, and the largest seizure in agency history…

Search warrants were executed at locations in Portland and Oregon City. At the Portland location, law enforcement located more than 52 pounds of powdered fentanyl. At the Oregon City location, more than one pound of fentanyl powder and over 8,000 fentanyl pills were discovered.

Multnomah County jail records show Funez was booked at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and released later that same day. His court record includes a pretrial release assessment filed Thursday afternoon and a release agreement that states he must appear in person for a court hearing the following morning. A subsequent document filed Friday states that he failed to appear at that hearing.

They are just terminals for taking electrons out the oxidation reaction of lithium. They don't get consumed. Perhaps the new battery formulation is an improvement, perhaps not. Time will tell.

Seems to me that Delta's biggest fuckup was trying to keep it an all-Delta operation. They sent a second plane, but the crew was houred out upon arrival at Goose Bay. They had to have known that before the plane even took off. Either they were too short-handed to put fresh crew members on the plane as passengers, or they cynically figured the pax would just have to wait in Goose Bay.

What they should have done is hired a charter airliner out of Montreal or Toronto to get the pax, and fly them to Detroit.

That might have been harder to schedule than doing it their way. It isn't always as easy as you think it should be. But it's very likely they had a very narrow aperture on their thinking.

As to timing out on arrival.... It's very likely something delayed their departure and the flight up consumed so much of the rest of their day they couldn't come home. You *can* do waivers on hours, if you can keep their entire flight home under, say, 12 hours.

It isn't just Delta, though. I was stranded once at Griffis AFB, NY because we landed in a snowstorm where they were actually plowing the runway in front of us, and we had to time our approach to touch down right as the plows cleared the runway. DESPITE telling our home command post for something like an hour "If we land we won't get to take off again." And them replying "You have to pick that crew up and bring them home; they're needed for a mission." We landed and we couldn't take off again for 2 days.

If you look at the individuals making the choices mostly they see almost pure upside. If you engage in some leftwing action that damages your company/college you will rarely face ANY sort of negative impact. And even if you do it builds enormous benefit within the leftwing NGO ecosystem.

So even if you get fired...you can immediately make more money, doing less work, with all sorts of non-monetary benefits (easy sex, an audience willing to listen to you, "friends", etc).

Of course anyone naturally leftwing is going to treat their host company/college/government office like a virus treats a host cell...

This, by the way, is one of the reasons for the collapse of conservationism. Do something good for the right that gets you fired and...you better have money in the bank, because there are few "right wing" NGOs to take you on...

First, last night I opined on my belief, based on watching their actions for some time, that the Qatari's are not jihadis, or religious fanatics like so many of their cousins; they worship Profit above all else, and generate huge amounts of cash (besides their oil money) from arbitraging everyone against everyone in the region. I think of them as being like the Ferengi in DS9; very clever, no morals whatsoever, they'll help anyone for the right price, and they'll change sides on a dime so long as they're paid well enough to do so.

news item tonight: Qatar has informed three senior Hamas officials that they must leave their territory because they can (or is it will?) no longer guarantee their safety.

Out here, Mrs. Duke puts 100A fuses on the cut-outs on the 12470Y/7200V distribution lines. One the single phase side, that's 720kW per phase. Some of the bigger oil breakers on the main lines are higher current than that.

So one 10 minute charge time would be pushing that.

182 Interesting podcast. Thought provoking ! So , Smith asked the Supreme Court" to take up and rule quickly on whether former President Donald Trump can be prosecuted on charges he plotted to overturn the 2020 election results." If a miracle happens, and if Trump's lawyers give the justices a well researched, convincing response to say that charges are too spacious, capricious, politically motivated and not in pursuit of justice, have no merit, are outside Smith's authority, et. etc., justices might rule for Trump. Plus Al Gore. The original insurrectionist. Why was he not charged with insurrection, and "plotting to overturn the results" when the country was subjected to the hanging chads farce ? when he refused to accept the results ?? On the other hand, Chief Justice Roberts.

I remember somebody thinking all you had to do was turn a generator. Just spin it up and voila, power.

What limits both charge rate and discharge rate is the internal resistance of the cell. If making the anode of silicon instead of carbon permits faster charging, it does so by reducing internal resistance. In which case the fault current for a direct short will also increase. If you have 400 volts DC on tap, even if the metal causing the short is immediately melted, you could wind up with a plasma arc.

I've got a bog-ordinary, 7500 peak/watt, 6000 running watt gasoline generator. It's not a clean power, no sine-wave generator or such.

So, not wanting to fry the flat screen TV, the router(s), the laptops, and etc.

What's the suggested method / equipment to put between the generator and those devices?

Hell, I'll even put the damn fridge on the same load, as everything now has a computer in the mix.

Other stuff, lamps, heaters and such, I can run from one of the other outlet legs from the genny, on a separate cord.

But the sensitive devices? Yeah, they'll get their own cord to the clean-up hardware, then cords direct to the devices. Won't mix 'em with the "raw power" circuits, at all.

Thanks in advance for advice!

222 152 Any battery that can be charged at a rate 600 kW could also be discharged at that rate, or faster. An e-car that developed a short across the battery, say in a wreck, would briefly resemble the breached reactor at Chernobyl.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 12, 2023 10:44 PM (tlyMW)

. . . and the charging process isn't 100% efficient, meaning that some portion of the juice that goes into the battery winds up as heat instead of charging the battery.

My vague recollection is that NiMH batteries require somewhere around 1.4 x the rated capacity to fully charge, meaning that around 72% of the energy put into the battery winds up as charge and the other 28% is lost as heat.

I don't know how present day lithium batteries, or this new version stack up, but even if you assume the charging process is 90% efficient (unlikely), it means that at a 600kW charge rate, 60kW of heat will be released. That's the equivalent of several home cooking ranges, with the oven and all "burners" running at full tilt boogie inside the battery during the entire time it's charging. I don't know how you get rid of that much heat.

you idiot, she's just headed one state over to get it. That's in accordance with the law that Texas passed, which was overwhelmingly supported by the people of Texas. You may not like it, but they do. And the Texas Supreme Court pointed out that the Law says that if the life of the mother was threatened, then law said it was allowed, but a licensed Doctor needed to make that decision. (which no doctor had done) And that Judges should stay out of it as much as possible

Every leftist seems to be pissed beyond belief that the Texas Court said "well this is the law that was passed, and it is very specific about what is allowed and what isn't, and it is not our job to write new laws when people don't like the existing ones."

Look for "power conditioners". And look at the specs.

For electronics, you can tolerate some frequency variation. Some. It's bad voltage regulation you have to worry about more.

If all you're doing is powering a rectifier to feed a switching power supply, frequency variation is not too bad, within limits. It can be bad for inductive loads like induction motors.

Look at your regulation specs on that generator. But a power conditioner is the ticket.

230 My recently deceased mother (92) told a story about when she was in art school in Minneapolis (early 50s). She lived in an old, 3 story home she shared with other students. Jim, look for a "line conditioner". Pretty standard item. Oilfield guys used them a lot for computers being run off rig power. A 2-pole generator should, by its very nature, give you a clean sine wave. It's other loads on the same generator, turning on and off, that can cause transient spikes. When I had extended power outages here, caused by T-storms, I would fire up my little Coleman genset, and run the house, and this very computer, on genset power, and never had a lick of trouble.

Nothing about what is happening is market driven, this is based on government mandates and leftist scheming.

The reason why V8's and a now even V6's are being phased out is because of CAFE standards, the car manufacturers have to pay a fine for every engine they produce that does not meet the standards, V8's, V6's and even larger displacement 4 cylinders will not meet the increasingly strict standards.

That's why all of the manufactureres are starting stuff turbo charged 4 Cylinders in all of their SUV's and even pickups.

And even these will not be able to meet the newer standards that are being proposed.

Pure EV's are simply not an option, and manufactures will have no choice but to put hybrids in all of their vehicles.

Of course, a big, unfiltered switching power supply load can fuck up a little generators regulation all to hell. These things are very non-linear. They draw current in little spikes around the peaks of the voltage wave. If you do the math, you see that those harmonics do nothing but heat wire. The source transfers energy only at the fundamental freq (you can see this as yet another type of power factor).

Those peaks can wreak havoc on little generators regulation. Even bigger systems.. I'm rambling, may run out of Pixy post limit space.

Back when my cousin, the re-tard meteorologist was working, in the '90s, at the GSP weather station, they installed a fancy new radar system, and some large Unisys computers to run it.

In case of power failure, they installed a big backup generator in a little outbuilding ($$$). Radar system had a YUGE UPS to keep it going until the generators spun up.

Well, when testing it. Generators would come on, take over the load. UPS would go crazy and switch back on battery.

The non-linear current was fucking up the generator regulation. They had to smooth that out. Had to put a big filter of some sort on the input to the UPS.

Who ???"The SJP's mission statement is "[to develop] a connected, disciplined movement that is equipped with the tools necessary to contribute to the fight for Palestinian liberation", with an emphasis on intersectionality (of course !).... Here is the fun part ! It is not a registered nonprofit but is instead supported by American Muslims for Palestine, which makes tracing its sources of funding difficult. Why in the world would they want to hide their funding sources ??

SJP activists are encouraged to cover their faces using masks or kaffiyehs when protesting, and to avoid using their real names and photos on social media, to avoid identification.

Why in the world would you want to avoid being identified ?? are you ashamed of your actions ???

They are at peak attack mode in both north and south right now. Casualties are always tragic, but they are to be expected in military action. I haven't seen confirmation of the 8 dead yet, but early today the IDF death total stood at 105 since the ground invasion started, which is an incredibly low number. (nearly 300 IDF soldiers were killed on 0ct 7) For contrast with past American wars, (just checked) at the height of the Tet Offensive 31 January 1968, American forces suffered 246 killed in a single day. And then you have Iwo Jima, where the Marines tood 24,000 casualties (k, w, f) in the 6 week battle for Iwo Jima.

8 dead in a day is very tragic - but it's still a very, very low number for the level of fighting going on. This is a War, not a police action.

The half-ton Tesla truck weighs just a couple of hundred less than my dump truck, which can haul five tons while towing five. When I'm driving something that weighs a lot more, I have to think in truck driving mode -- early braking, more following distance, no aggressive cornering, and so on. Just looked it up. Two THD definitions, THD_f and THD_r (fundamental vs RMS). The former is the RMS ratio of all the higher harmonics to the fundamental. The latter is the higher harmonics to the RMS of the whole damn thing.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at December 12, 2023 11:40 PM (Mzdiz)

When you're talking about 0.1% THD or less, like in an audio or RF system, there's not a lot of difference between the two definitions, since the harmonics are such a small portion of the total. If you're talking about 30% or more harmonics in a power system, it does matter which definition you use.

10 minute charge time they say. That's going to be a shit ton of current. And charging power.

You ain't gonna do a 10 minute charge at your house unless, well, you've got a wee bit bigger service than the typical residential size.

Like you have your own substation out back.

And here you see the plan of the oligarch...you have to go to one of their facilities they will build and pay them probably more than a fillup to get your 10 min charge... I still don't know how the people that want to make generation less efficient plan on generating the needed power though... unless the other hidden plan is to make car ownership impossible for anyone below the upper middle class so they won't need that much power

My 2008 3/4 ton 4X4 Suburban has a curb weight of 6245 pounds, or 755 pounds less than the Cyber. But it will go nearly 600 miles on a full tank, and the refill takes 5 minutes.

Diesel-electric train. Diesel engine turns a generator which powers motors that drive the drive wheels.

Advantage to this (at scale) Big ass diesel can run at peak efficiency RPM. And series field motors have a lot of starting torque. You eliminate the need for a mechanical transmission.

It's still a fossil fuel powered vehicle. Just uses and electric stage for the transmission.

They should arguably dissolve the program and return funds to taxpayers, but definitely not send it those who aren’t getting the job done.

Weight, mainly, I expect. Generators and motors both contain a lot of copper and a lot of iron. For a small vehicle, an automatic transmission, made of aluminum and steel gets the job done well with less weight. Locomotives need to be very heavy in order to get enough traction to pull a load, so weight is a plus, not a minus.

I think some home builders have done it. But a generator, and a motor, capable of using the full output of a 300 cubic inch six are going to be very heavy, and much of that weight is copper, which is very expensive now. The C6 automatic transmission, as used behind the 300 inch six, weighs 140 pounds, and is made of steel and aluminum, both much cheaper than copper.

If you were going to home-build a hybrid, start with a small pickup or minivan with a manual transmission, and mount your traction motor to the transmission. Get a little Kubota Diesel out of a piece of construction equipment or a large mower, and hook it to a generator of suitable size. Add in a charge controller, and enough six-volt golf cart batteries to make up the voltage of the traction motor, or a bit more. Output of the generator charges the batteries, and also goes to the traction motor. Ideally, the motor and generator alone can put enough juice into the traction motor to keep you rolling on the highway at 75 miles an hour, with no drain on the batteries. The batteries get used for quick acceleration, and climbing hills.

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, and the desert was filled with howling of the wind. In a nondescript, tiny 20k foot apartment of the Al Mana tower, a light was on. Ismail Haniyeh was hastily packing his diamond encrusted reticule.

George Washington University temporarily suspended SJP after it projected anti-Israel messages on a campus library, in violation of university policies.

Columbia University announced a week earlier it was suspending both SJP and Jewish Voice for Peace, citing “repeatedly violated University policies related to holding campus events.”

Previously, Brandeis University announced it is revoking recognition of the campus chapter of SJP, saying the group “openly supports Hamas”.

Florida’s public university system banned SJP in late October following a directive by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Re that 30% THD limit. One 3-phase wye systems 3n (triple-n) harmonics act as zero sequence. They add in the neutral. A 30% THD limit ensures neutral harmonic current will never be greater than phase current. I think. If I remember.

But you only have to worry about odd triple-n's. Most of the time. The 3rd, 9th, 15th, etc.

Well, my answer to that? I guess you could, but you'd need rather a lot of TE modules, which are expensive, and you can't turn them off once the battery is charged. And they themselves would have to be cooled, because it's the heat flow through the semiconductor junction that makes the electrons move. Picture a catalytic converter covered with TE modules, and bristling with heat sinks and fans.

A lot of effort for a very small gain. Unless charging a really flat battery, the alternator absorbs only a couple of horsepower. The big brass ring would be to use exhaust heat to drive an absorption chiller to provide air conditioning to the car.

416 Sorry if this is OT, but I could use some Horde prayers tomorrow - it's for a happy thing, so no worries!

As many of you may know, I have lost a not insignificant amount of weight over the last 15 months (thank you, Mounjaro!). In the process, I also discovered that I have a condition (non-fatal) called Lipedema, which causes my lower body to hang on to fat like Grim Death. The only permanent solution for this condition is liposuction specific for lipedema , followed by skin excision a few months later to reduce the area that Lipedema tissue can grow back into.

There aren't many plastic surgeons in the country who are qualified to do this series of surgeries - there are a LOT of doctors who claim to be able to perform them, but they aren't boards certified plastic surgeons.

Anyway, I flew in to California this afternoon, and tomorrow I will be having the first of 4 surgeries (spaced out over the next year) to finally get rid of the excess tissue that I have been carrying around all these decades.

If you would please send some good Moron vibes to southern California tomorrow (12/13) afternoon around 1:30 PST, I would be forever grateful!

Propane is a good refrigerant, very efficient thermodynamically. I have run propane/isobutane blend in my vehicles many times. You have maybe a pound of refrigerant in the system. So it can burn? So can the 200 pounds of gasoline in your fuel tank. Just make sure that the evaporator, which is inside your car, and the lines leading to it, are very robust, and you are safe from fire inside the car. Rupture the condenser in a wreck, and if it gets ignited (big if there), you have a propane torch that burns for a few seconds until the propane is exhausted. On the other side of the firewall from you, and a long way from the fuel tank.

The entire energy of a nuclear detonation is released in less than one microsecond. When it goes off, you have shit ton of free energy confined in the space as the bomb casing. Temperature is...extreme.

The initial radiation burst (X-rays, gamma rays) heats the surrounding air up to millions of degrees before the "fireball" of the that confined space of bomb casing can even begin to expand.

All sorts of crazy, exotic shit happens as that mess begins to expand. Once it gets going, the shockwave itself is enough to compression heat surrounding air to incandescence. Again, close enough.

I mean, your ATOMS are disassembled down to their respective protons, neutrons, electrons and such, well before the fireball or blast wave even says Howdy.

There's a lot of released footage of early atomic bomb tests. I couldn't find the big compilation I remember watching.

Anyway, you see footage of vehicles and houses they used as tests to see what would happen. Thermal pulse gets there first, sets the paint on fire, or the roofs of houses on fire. Then, the blast wave gets there and blows them away.

They just opened up a subway stop in that area called 'Potomac Yards'. Lots of McMansions, townhomes, condos, apartments, are around. A mall, lots of little businesses, Crystal City and Pentagon City are nearby (home of many beltway bandits and FedGov offices). Rt1 is the main road there. GW PKWY is nearby. That location is already congested. This won't help.
