I almost dragged my portable solar panel outside today to get some output readings but so many people have their wood stoves going in this area of SE PA I doubt there's much more then 25% of summers output through the haze. It's just another variable in the equation that some people never mention.

Thanks for including that video on ink and watercolor wash. I've seen some great examples of the combination. It lends itself to plein air drawing with its immediacy and improvisation. Now I just have to learn to use watercolors. No problem.

Absolutely. Before I would consider any sort of large scale expenditure on solar I want to have a twelve month idea of feasibility. Would I have considered back in July the effect of wood stove smoke degradation of solar output? Probably not. But coming back from the gym this morning and looking at the tree lines and the haze, and the scent in the air, it was obvious what is was.

Not to vilify those with a hobby of cutting wood, splitting it, transporting it all over the place, which I have done... but it's gonna knock the efficiency of solar down by a huge amount.

JTB, I haven't cracked the Peterson Early Morning Pipe tin yet; I'm waiting for a cool to cold morning for that. But I tried the St. Bruno: ten minutes last evening, and about fifteen this a.m. Not too strong for me when taken in short doses like that. It burns steadily and has a pleasant aroma.

33 In my continuing life with my car, the '16 Buick LaCrosse, I just now installed a new chrome metal license plate frame. I need to purchase an oil filter for this month's oil change. Plus I've splurged on some aftermarket wheels, Rials in the stock size (18"), bright silver paint. They should arrive at my mechanic's this week. If I don't like the color, I can send them back for a $75 charge.

The factory wheels were fine, but the silver paint is peeling now after seven years. The cleaner I've been spraying them with during car washes might be the culprit. I'll buy some non-acid cleaner and be sure to wax the wheels, too, even if only with spray wax.

35 I am knitting today and my hands are holding up so far. I was texting with an old friend and she said she is thinking about learning to spin. Too far away to loan her a wheel, so I'm going to srnd her some spindles and fiber. She knows some local that can show her how to use them.

She had no idea about the Ravelry thing but she is a bit of a Lefty and probably didn't notice.

37 Also with the car, I've ordered a gel product that is supposed to remove water spots. The roof has some, and there are some faint spots if you look right (or wrong) on hood and trunk. If I can get the spots mostly removed, then claying plus a polish and wax, which the car is due for anyway, may restore its close-to-new look.

38 Sort of a "hobby maintenance" day for me. I managed to get myself one of those little ultrasonic bath cleaners, and I've been running a bunch of my fountain pens through it. Can't say I've ever tried those blends. The Peterson blends are generally reputed to be pretty strong stuff, though Early Morning Pipe is supposedly mild. As for your pipes, they sound really cool. I bought a pouch. When I opened it, my first whiff said, "Plummy." After I put some out on a saucer to dry -- it's pretty moist in the pouch -- I got a faint, fleeting whiff of barbecue sauce.

It's not a sugary/chocolate/root beer/vanilla kind of blend. More like "This is tobacco, citizen."

Pus the pouch has the neat logo of a St. Bernard dog, and the annoying warning text is in small font rather than in a giant headline.

58 Sort of hobby-related. I have a Studebaker 232 V8 engine that I placed on a wooden skid of my own building a few days ago. Today, I managed to get the tractor started (it was iffy, but it finally caught and ran), and maneuvered my home-made lifting forks under the skid, and picked it off the ground. Left the tractor idling, went and got my '08 Suburban, which will be my ride to Arizona, pulled it up past the tractor, and opened the rear hatch (worst feature of this 'burb). Climbing back on the tractor, I lifted the engine, and got it into the 'burb, and settled on the deck. Backed out, and the forks stayed under the skid, because not clamped to the loader bucket. But all is well. I had to skid the engine forward a few inches to close the hatch, but that was easy. I will probably shift it as far to the right as I can, and make some effort to tie it into place. Don't want a 700-pound block of iron flying forward at me if I have to make a panic stop...

Borkum Riff original definitely has a "Satan's Asscrack" vibe to it, but I've found the Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey to be quite pleasant. One of my favorites so far.

89 Working on the 94 Cherokee this weekend. Hopefully soon to be snowplow rig.
Installing new front tires.
Pretty good deal.
Started out as 4 tires, 255/75R17s, 2 new, unmounted, 2 mounted on the same rims I have on the Cheep, for $200. Then it went to $100. I was still a bit short and waited for payday. Went back and they are not for sale. Grrrr...
Anyway. Three days later dude cacthes me in the store.
"Hey. The guy only wanted his unmounted tires back. If you want the other two go get 'em. Free."
So now I got 2 matching spares.

They are about two inches long by 5/8" diameter, with a snap cap, and come in trays of 50 with a hinged lid. Each vial will hold a couple dozen half or quarter watt resistors, but I do have to fold the leads on new ones, which are many. One watt and larger get stored elsewhere. Many years ago, I was driving down a road in suburban St. Louis. It has a long, shallow decline, about a half mile altogether as it goes toward its intersection.

As I was driving two parallel lights were coming toward me, and since it was dark out, I assumed it was an airplane, with lights on both wings. Then the lights reversed course, without any pause. As the lights drifted away, moving much faster in the other direction, I'm watching them go... until they split up and went in opposite directions.

I have no explanation, and can't think of one that makes any sense involving known human tech.

156 Hobbies: The baseball card collection is filling up, and I'm at the point where I have few cards I'm looking for that sell for less that $50 - 100 or more (I don't by PSA rated cards).

So I look for bargains, but there are fewer and fewer of them to be had. The 1967 Topps high series, card number 534 and higher, typically sell for more, so even the commons are generally well over $10 a piece. I found a few recently that were under, and I assumed the seller had too many, or didn't realize he could get more for them. We're not talking outrageous bargains, but it felt like a steal to me.

In that series, the white whales are the rookie cards for Rod Carew, and Tom Seaver, as well as Brooks Robinson, Rocky Colavito, and a few others. It's weird to see a '67 Mantle selling for significantly less than a '67 Mike Shannon, but that's how it goes.

167 Strangest sight in the sky was on a lonely Texas road, late at night many years ago. Had a job where I had to drive through a lot of lonely places at the time. Came down the road into a little valley at about 3 am, clear night, not much wind, no moon, saw a high voltage line crossing the road about 1/2 mile up. Suddenly I saw these green tendrils - eventually there were about 50 - sparking UP from the power lines into the air, going up about 50 yards and just - diapering. The activity covered about 100 yards from side to side, and I pulled up about 400 yards away and just got out of my car and watched. I could hear it faintly crackling, and the whole thing moved slowly towards the side of the valley as I watched, maybe at about 5 mph. When it got to the side, it just - stopped - and everything was like nothing had ever happened.

I have never been able to come up with any kind of rational explanation for that, but I know I saw it.

173 According to The Daily Signal, the teenager formerly competed as a boy and placed 11th in the world in the Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) World Championships in April 2023.

But on Dec. 3 in Dallas, the 13 year old put on a blond wig and a gemstone-covered solo dress and took the stage with the girls. He took first place out of 100 dancers in the category. The placement makes the boy both a world qualifier and a national qualifier.

Yep. Nothing like the bright lights, the little green men. Just weird phenomena that don't seem to have any obvious cause.

177 I'm at a standstill on the bathroom redo until I can get a reliable plumber. So the goal this week is to finish the library/office.

I thrifted a mirror, ceramic bowl, and wooden picture frames for painting or repurposing. I have floating shelves that must be inserted into small or medium books to form the actual shelf. I found library-sale dregs that I can destroy without guilt.

There was that movie with Vincent Price where the street drunk Peter Lorre out tasted him to his shame and horror in some upscale wine shop.

Vincent: drink, spit.

Lorre: drink, swallow.

I can easily dismiss the possibility we have little green men doing anal probes here, but cannot dismiss the notion that tech probes have been sent here. Things that can easily pass by, and not even be noticed, or if they are noticed, aren't sensational enough to make headlines.

There was somethign else that I never try to describe because I can't, and I just sound silly talking about it. All I can say is that it was something low on the horizon, not far, and it was like looking at something that was there, and wasn't there, at the same time. I could see it, and see through it.

That is a classic description of St. Elmo's Fire, a type of corona discharge. Friend of mine saw that a few years on an HVDC power line that passes near his place. Called the power company. They were intrigued, because the line was not even energized at the time.

You know, Elon Musk could bring in a fuckton of dollars by selling burner xTwat accounts to normies, just for us to use to post scatological taunts at stooned coonts like that. Take 'em down after about 24 hours, for violating "community standards, nudge-nudge, wink-wink". It would be like selling pebbles at a stoning.
