That's the problem for the other candidates. Whether the supporters of other candidates want to admit it or not Trump is a unique political figure in US history. He came out of nowhere, largely mocked and ignored, and then proceeded to lay waste to a slew of professional Republican politicians and then did the same thing to the inevitable Hillary and along the way he built a movement. Not a took over the GOP mantle, built a new one.
He got the most votes of any sitting president in history and none of those people have gone anywhere. And almost all of them will always believe Trump had his election stolen from him in 2020 and they want payback because their lives were way better under Trump in every way. And in Trump they see someone who is taking the shots the left want to give all of us and he never backs down.
Nobody was going to beat him in 2024. It was over before it started.

Oh sure. Plenty, even in Roman history alone. Varus' main issue was contempt for his foe and trusting his advisor, who was organizing the revolt. Getting caught in road column in rough terrain by superior numbers where you can't deploy is bad news.

Trump was tempted to try in 2012, but he would have had to face Obama, and he was smart enough to know that he was better off waiting 4 years. DeSantis made a mistake in trying to win against Trump in 2024. But then, the money people behind him were willing to back him as the Trump killer. DeSantis faced a problem where his financial backers wanted him to attack and take out Trump but voters in the GOP mainly wanted to hear how he and Trump would differ on policy. So he by and large stayed silent on Trump and the 2020 election/lawfare/etc and concentrated on demonstrating policy through his command of the Fla legislature regarding transexuals, Disney, etc. probably because he was told to target evangelicals. He also splurged big money on buying cred from bloggers, Salem's properties, Shapiro, etc. and paying people like evangelist Van De Plast in Iowa. His team basically were replicating the Cruz 2016 campaign which is not surprising because many of them were with Cruz in 2016.
DeSantis started having problems between his backers and primary voters though when he tried to stake out opinions on Ukraine, foreign trade, industrial policy, and so on which led to waffling probably due to irrecouncilable differences between what GOP voters want and and donors.

Dunno, Trump has a gauntlet of Lawfare to run next year plus age, trying to run a campaign with all sorts of interference from the DOJ and a feckless GOP party. That is what the whale donors are betting on with Nikki and the GOP would gladly parachute her into the nomination if they can. That is why I want DeSantis to stay in and I think that is why he hangs around to at least from IA through NH. From what I understand, DeSantis is focusing on IA and its retail politics and NH but largely relying on momentum to go into South Carolina. Haven't heard squat about NV's caucus this year but that could also render a surprise win for DeSantis.
DeSantis still has a path but it will be difficult and depend on a lot of circumstances beyond his and his backers control regarding what is happening to Trump and whether money can buy Nikki some love in the primaries (you might also get some mischief crossover voting from Dems in primaries this year if Biden stays on the ticket.)
