The Patagonian rebellion was a popular uprising / general labor strike after WWI when wool prices cratered and the English companies running the various sheep herd related industries in Patagonia started cutting wages of workers and raising prices of goods for sale to the same. It was informed in part by the "gaucho" independence and Italian anarcho-syndicalism, and it was crushed bloodily by the Argentine army.

One of the heroes was El Facon Grande, who was named after the big gaucho knife he carried.

The actual inventor of fleece material that Patagonia used was Malden Mills. It was HQed in Andover, MA, on of the last surviving New England mill manufacturers.

Patagonia gear was ubiquitous in this area for years. Then they went woke.

Professonal students, those that keep failing and try different schools of study going from tough to easy-peasy, usually went this route:
Medicine or Engineering then Science then Economics then Arts then Education = success, you're a teacher.
The joke was that the Medicine/Engineering students failed because they actually failed the Science part of their studies (usually Math or Chem) and still tried Science as a fallback!
The non-professional students, the ones who came in already intending to teach, usually became excellent Science or Math teachers.

130 Pretty much any other country you might visit outside of the USA, you're well and truly screwed when it comes to anything resembling what we take for granted, as "Our Rights."

Remember the old USSR Star Trial formats? Yeah, your "defense counsel" was there *only* to ensure that The State dotted all of it's "I's" and crossed all of it's "T's" in your prosecution. Couldn't have a fair conviction if the State failed to thoroughly put you through the Tribunal's Wringer!

A great many Nations have legal systems which closely resemble the Soviet system of old. To be accused, to be indicted, is nearly the conviction itself. The "trial" is you just being processed before the hammer the gavel.

Rights, such as free speech, armed self defense (even, *any* self defense!), presumption of innocence, right not to self-incrimination... those are American notions, seldom found away from these shores.

Spoke with someone recently, who compared Mexican v. U.S. criminal justice (he's experienced both), the Mexicans are all about the bribes, whereas the U.S. will treat you like they're doing you a favor taking a plea for a crime you didn't commit.

Frankly, I think the Mexicans are way more honest about it.

I don't think it's particularly confusing. Millions of people love to sail both here and around the world. Not because it is the most simple means of mass transportation but largely because it requires skill and practice to do it well and when it is done well it's beautiful.

Same reason some of you love to shoot old guns. Not because they are the most efficient but because of the art of shooting them that is pleasing to those who enjoy that skill and the work it takes to do it well.

230 In the Cruising World of people who journey from port to port, the Sailboat is King.

Very damn few motor yachts are BIG enough, to carry sufficient fuel to effect but the shorter Caribbean crossings, much less a Transatlantic or the huge distances of the Pacific.

"Long Range Trawlers" are the Cruising Motoryachts of choice, these days. Deep draft, beamy, not particularly fast, but having 1,500+ miles of fuel on board can make the North Atlantic (New Foundland to Iceland to Greenland to the UK) a possible crossing.

But... price out a used 58' Nordhaven, vs a used 52' Irwin or 51' Morgan Out Island. Long Range Trawler is gonna take some MooMooMoney to buy n' fuel, a never ending expense.

A proper Cruising Vessel is one that can be operated by the (usually) Couple who own and live aboard their boat, not needing additional crew to get the job done.

The two are not even remotely comparable.

Grasping some worldly awesome realities does not equate to "Godly reality". That is why we have Gaia and other golden calf type gods.

261 260 Staying out of the great sail boat debate, coming up on the end of the thread.

You can say you saw it here first: The body they found in the house? Wasn't James Yoo.

James has a plan, and we have not yet seen it. When we do, we'll know.

Yoo who?

This you?

>>I get the lng range cruising abilities of sailing and that is something to admire. however, anybody with money buys a 100 meter motor yacht, nota 100 meter sail boat.

Koru is a 127 meter sailboat. So big they had to dismantle a bridge in the Netherlands to get it out of the yard it was built in. And it's only the second biggest sailboat in the world.

yeah, and? how many of the new yachts in this range have sails? was this something that needed saying. even with bezos, unlimited $, built 3 yachts, 2/3 were motor yachts.

even then he built the big sailing yacht, with the mega yacht motor tender for his whore, so

was this a math free thread ?

Just spitballin' here, but I'm willing to bet there are damned few sailing yachts built these days that don't have auxiliary Diesel power.

it is a bit funny that I have to suggest somebody here find a dictionary to get a better understanding of the word "wrong"

is it ironic that you are wrong about the meaning of the word wrong?

If I had "fuck you" money like Musk or Bezos, I would build a rotor ship. Three rotors, each a Savonius wind turbine, geared to the water propeller. You could damned near sail dead upwind, albeit slowly.

276 One of the best times i ever had was sailing a small catamaran up and down punta cana, beaching it, going to one of the tiny shacks/bars having a few drinks, talking to people at the bar, and then heading further up the atoll to another little shack, and doing that all day.
