66 Oddly, enough, the NYT loved him.

"From 1957 to 1971, Kent was president of the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship.[25] After a well-received exhibition of his work in Moscow at the Pushkin Museum in 1957–58, he donated several hundred of his paintings and drawings to the Soviet peoples in 1960. He subsequently became an honorary member of the Soviet Academy of Fine Arts and in 1967 the recipient of the International Lenin Peace Prize. Kent specified that his prize money be given to the women and children of Vietnam, both North and South. (The nature of Kent's gift is clarified by his wife Sally in the 2005 documentary Rockwell Kent, produced and written by Fred Lewis.) "

76 Why are most buildings associated with mining at least fifty thousand feet tall? Is that to compensate for mining the minerals fifty thousand feet underground? Is part of the mineral extraction process bringing it out of the ground and hauling it up fifty thousand feet inside a wooden building in the middle of Podunk and, I dunno, dropping it to the first floor? Enquiring minds want to know!

107 Not a favourite although I said "Group of Seven" immediately as they did create a distinct style that you'll see prints of [and paint-by-numbers!] in all sorts of cottages, camps, cabins in the woods here.

I like the style a lot - it actually began in America, then known as the "Regionalist Style" as practiced by John Steuart Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, and Grant Wood. A generation later, the style became used by Canadian artists know as "The Group of Seven", of which Carmichael was one.

Sadly, Lenin and Stalin and the Russian avant garde (before they were all liquidated) noticed the style and adopted it - and then the Soviets stuck with it for decades. And that's why so many now think of it as Communist Art.

Montenegro and Albania for a time. Gjergj Kastrioti was an ethnic Albanian noble's son who was held as ransom by the Ottomans and trained as a janissary. Great soldier and general, loyal, rose through the ranks and was given land and power in the Balkans.

Then, he united several Albanian fiefdoms and clans, betrayed the sultan, and drove the Ottomans out. Fought them for the rest of his life, and supposedly never lost a battle. Went under the name/title Skanderbeg in his later days, and is kind of a Balkans hero....even to the Serbs, who hate Albanians, but hate the Ottomans more lol

While this system is surely a technical marvel, it is important to note that it is clear from this footage that Arrow interceptors launch - or at least *can* launch - from what appear to be civilian areas. Israel embeds military capability in civilian residential areas.

This matters because this is the same thing that Israel alleges Hamas does, and then uses that allegation to justify Israeli retribution against Palestinian civilians. Israel embedding military capability in civilian areas and then alleging that Palestine does the same as a justification for merciless slaughter of civilians is the worst kind of hypocrisy.

Faux outrage over Palestinian rockets near a Gazan apartment building is particularly galling when Israel launches sophisticated missiles from what appears to be a residential block.

🧵Critical Thread. Close review of Gaza casualty figures reported by UN OCHA based on daily Hamas “Ministry of Health” numbers proves they are FALSIFIED. Women & children are grossly inflated. This is easily proven but media ignores. See detailed expose below: 1/
Dec 4, 2023 · 7:11 PM UTC

UN OCHA publishes a daily “flash update” since Oct 8 and cites detailed Gaza casualty figures provided by Hamas. The website and data is available to the public here: ochaopt.org/crisis Sometime in October the UN provided the data in graphic form, here is the latest. 2/

It is immediately obvious that Hamas does not report ANY combatant deaths & the numbers amazingly seem to indicate that IDF bombs & bullets disproportionately hit women, children & elderly. They IDF CANNOT seem to hit too many fighting age men. But the numbers are faked. 3/

Both were noted for their above-average (for modern painters) drafting skills, so I probed a couple of historians for evidence that their military experience contributed to their artistic output, but apparently they both had extensive classical art training before they zigged their first zag.

Albert in a tub? Well, make sure he stays warm so he doesn't catch cold!"

Blenders make "match" versions of PA, Carter Hall, and other tobaccos that are no longer produced, and the matches are very good in their own right and usually cheaper. My palate is usually not good enough to tell the difference between an original and a match anyway.

283 Tobacco pipes can be refurbished and restored. The stem get its oxidation removed, the bowl and airway are cleaned, and the whole pipe is polished and waxed. I have a small Dr. Grabow from eBay that probably dates from the Thirties yet looks nearly new, for example.

I've refreshed the stems on a few of my older, 1980s pipes, and I hate doing it (Oxyclean, fine sandpaper, stem polish). My preference is for acrylic stems.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 06, 2023 10:40 AM (J2vNu)

A friend of mine used to collect pipes. He had an old one that I think he said was from Germany. I can't even describe it. The stem would come out of your mouth, then head straight down parallel to your neck, then hooked forward to a 3 inch tall bowl that was parallel to the stem. The bowl had a bottom that screwed off for cleaning, had some metal coat of arms looking thing riveted to the front of the bowl, and had a metal cap that hinged open on top of the bowl with air holes. He called it "the radical bowl" lol

NBC & the rest of msm is well aware. The f'ing UN and Hamas get a little public slap for 'rape.' Oh, but that's how 'soldiers' can be! Just look at the UN peacekeepers & also other nations at the time of war.

What of the dead; the tortured also during rape and including male victims; the hostages - dead or alive; the many thousands of displaced Israelis, destroyed farms?

If they cared one iota, they'd help find the leaders of the Oct 7th attack & the participants including those operating outside of Hamas' control & all hostage holders and bring them forward for judgment.

Is this sarcasm? It has to be. Air defense systems are always located near the expected target of aerial bombardment be it aircraft or missiles. Hamas targets Israeli civilian areas, ergo those areas have anti-air missiles stationed there.

To equate missiles launched in defense of civilians with missiles launched attacking civilians means either a sarcastic post, emulating Hamas logic or it means the original poster is a total idiot.

Dating Taylor Swift is a problem
When you break-up, she'll sing you're a goblin
But, never you fear
Cuz in a few years
She'll look and sing just like Janis Joplin!

338 Carmichael was one of the Group of Seven Canadian landscape painters. Cobalt, Ontario, the silver capital of the world (dpicted in this painting), was a favourite painting spot of theirs, and the rugged pre-Cambrian landscape of Cobalt, with its iconic mine headframes sticking up from the pines, along with Lake Superior's north shore, were among their favourite locations, especially for the more impressionistically inclined members of the group.. The McMichael Gallery, in Kleineburg, Ontario (not far from Toronto) has a big exhibit on now of all the Group of 7's Cobalt paintings. The G7 were big on nature, and one of their dictums was that blackflies that got stuck in the paint were all part of the natural process, and should be ignored rather than picked off the canvas.
