Gun Thread: First December 2023 Edition!

120323 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Jumpin' jelly on a biscuit! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be December 3, 2023? Only 22 shopping days 'til Christmas 2023, 387 shopping days 'til Christmas 2024, and a mere 752 shopping days until Christmas 2025! But who is counting?

Programming Note: I need to prepare for a bunch of meetings next week so I will only be checking in on the comments from time to time tonight. Thanks for understanding.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

What's up, all y'all? My busy season at work has started, so I mostly have my nose glued to a spreadsheet which doesn't leave much time for fun stuff such as my pioneering work in particle physics research, shootin' for funsies, and organic tree farming. How about you guys and gals? Are you getting out? Are you practicing your shooting and buying ammo?

Guns of the Horde
First up, our pal That SOB Van Owen shares a great report on the FN Reflex micro compact 9mm. Take it away TSOBVO!

Times being what they are, I decided I needed a new carry gun. After a lot of research, I settled on the new FN Reflex micro compact 9mm. It is similar in size (6.2 inches overall with a 3.3-inch barrel) and weight (18.4 ounces unloaded) to the SA Hellcat and the Sig P365, but rather than being striker fired like those and most other micro compacts, the Reflex has an internal hammer and is single action only. Why does being hammer-fired matter? First off, it makes it easier to cycle than other micro 9s as there isn't a striker to cock and re-cock as part of the action. Next, it allows the pistol to be field stripped without pulling the trigger as part of the disassembly process. Finally, and most importantly, it can allow for the trigger to be smoother and lighter in pull. The internal hammer translates to one of the best triggers in its class.

It's a good-looking gun, especially in FDE (you can also get it in black) and comes with both an 11 round and an extended 15 round magazine. The grips have aggressive stippling as well as grooves on the front and back straps that makes it really feel good in your hand. The frame sports a small accessory rail for mounting a flashlight, etc. Controls are few and basic. There's a reversible teardrop-shaped mag release button on the left side of the gun, a small slide stop, and a rotating takedown lever. The slide stop is somewhat hard to manipulate, but I hope it will become easier as the gun breaks in and I get accustomed to it. The sights are three-dot iron sights; the front night sight has a tritium insert and high visibility orange circle and is easy to acquire, even in low light. Being old school, I opted not to get the MRD model, which has a slide cut for Shield RMSc and Holosun K-series optics.

I have so far fired about 150 rounds through the Reflex, including 115 grain FMJ, Hornady Critical Defense 115 grain FTX, and Winchester PDX1 124 grain +P. They all fed without a problem, and accuracy-wise they all shot better than I can. They grouped a little low for me, but I was holding at six o'clock of the bull out of habit. I really like the way this pistol looks, feels, and shoots. This gun will definitely become a part of my EDC rotation.

PROS:
Reliable.
Accurate.
Great trigger.
Compact.
High viz steel sights.
Two magazine options are included.

CONS:
The slide release is awkward to operate.
Few holsters are available yet.

Reminder
You have probably put away your small engine equipment for the year and some of you may even be exchanging the mower for a snow blower. Taking care of your stuff isn't difficult, makes it last longer, and generally means it stands a decent chance of working the next time you need it. Here's a vid on a specific Honda mower, but the concepts apply to all small 4-stroke engine equipment.

Cigar of the Week

Phatty Diogenes 120323 scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes does us all a solid with this review of the Corona Phatty.

If you ever get the chance to smoke a Carona 10th Anniversary Connecticut Phatty - don't.

Just - don't.

This cigar was a pain in the ass and too much so for just an unremarkable smoke. I finally gave up, tossed it and just continued with more of the Buffalo Trace. Three days later while walking the dog he found the remains and gave it a good squirt.

Smart dog.

Th Phatty is aptly named, being a COUS... cigar of unusual size. If didn't fit my normal cutter, it was hard to light, and while having a reasonable draw, did not keep an even ash, and the flavor was, as mentioned, unremarkable. And damnit, it was too big to smoke. It was like trying to hold a banana in your mouth. After a bit I flashed on Clinton and Monica and that was the final straw.

It is rated as a mild cigar, 6x60, or you can go with the Double Phatt at 7 x 60, and at $75 for a box of 20, very affordable. But - no thanks.

You've been warned.

Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you! People, smoking a cigar is supposed to be a pleasant experience, not a fight with an uncooperative stogie.

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

25 One thing I would note: I took recently delivery of a Noreen BN36x3 Carbine X.

I was a bit apprehensive how it would shoot, what with it being 30.06 and a 16" barrel. After shooting the rifle and can say, without a doubt, it one fine shooting weapon.

I should have some sort of an accuracy report in the next few weeks.

27 I went w/ the DMV MGC this afternoon with my Colt M1991A1 and a Colt New Service Revolver (1908 vintage) chambered in .44 Russian. The New Service is a big (5.5" barrel), heavy (about 2.5 pounds), large frame revolver with hard rubber grips from the period. .44 Russian is a very mild load in this revolver. It could easily have been fired w/ one hand. My problem w/ this revolver is that the ergonomics this revolver don't work for me when firing it in double action. The trigger is just a bit too far away for a good position w/ my index finger. This forces me to "choke up" on my grip in order to get the needed leverage to work that heavy double action trigger pull. That hurt my accuracy. However, everything still works on this 115 year old antique, and a shove on the ejector rod pushes out the empty casings smartly.

38 .303 British update: About a year ago Weasel helped me out by posting my cry for help on a broken magazine release spring for my old 303 British. I finally got around to fixing it, and thought I was done. Sure it felt much more stout than before, but I figured it was just because the old spring was worn out and this one needed a little breaking in. But the more I cycled the bolt and inserted/released the magazine, the more I felt something was wrong. Long story short: it was not inserted correctly, and in the course of re-installing it, I broke it.

I now have 2 springs on order. Whig - I see why you need to take off the butt stock (no, I did not break, or even attempt to remove, my forestock - your warnings were well heeded). It appeared I might be able to sneak the spring into position without pulling the whole thing apart, but the easiest way to do something isn't always the best way. Lesson learned. When they come in I'll pull the whole thing apart and do it right. It will afford me the opportunity to clean it properly anyway!

41 Took my 15yo boy to range to spot and pick up brass.

[no load data below... ]

Trying out some new 9mm loads with Vihtavuori 3n38... Case fill was significant, as in be careful or you'll spill it. As sanity check went back to their loading manual and compared to similar loads. Yup, checks out. Anyway, started at the usual low end with 5 rounds and 0.2 grain increments on up to max.

Loaded up one low-end round into the trusty and durable Ruger P95. Popped it off. Got the case retriever and examined it. Nothing wierd. Primer flattened a bit and slight crater (tiny little volcano shape). Repeat with the rest of the increasing charges. Nothing remarkably different, but you squint your eyes and look real close the crater might be geeting more 'sharp'.

Given no missfeeds and all good, I'll probably load up a few more and focus on accuracy vs feel as I really didn't find any significance in recoil.

48 Today's meeting of the DMV MGC included Ed L, Blaster and Sra Blaster, Hrothgar and Stinky's Daddy.
It had been a hile so wanted to make sure I put some ammo through all 3 of my pistols but the theme today was 1911s so mostly shot the Kimber. Blaster has a report o the target game we played which tested accuracy and was a lot of fun.
I felt my shooting for the most part was mediocre but I started out shooting at 10 yards which is farther than I usually shoot and was able to adjust when I was off target, mostly low.
I only got to shoot 2 rounds from the revolvers but always surprised at how much easier it is. Should have checked out what was going on on the other lane sooner.

Is gun, not safe.

Had him work through the manual of arms, had five snaps caps and went through loading, racking, dropping mags, etc. a few times.
Also found out while right handed he is left eye dominant and preferred to go that way...

Gave him a box of factory loads to shoot.
Did well enough at the ~7 yards and homed in his point of quite quickly.
Well done son.

Well I will send them to him whether he posts them or not.

Anyway, we shot at 5 yards at a battleship game layout with 1 inch circles for targets. It was hard! And fun! It chews up a LOT of ammo though. Still, always fun to mix up how we shoot.

Also, I was just cleaning guns prior to the 7 pm start. Cleaned sra blaster's Kimber Raptor II and about to do mine.

Thanks, Blake!
I've put about 300 rounds through it now, and the dang thing still runs like a sewing machine. I will also add that it is not nearly as snappy as I anticipated. As a matter of fact, the recoil is quite mild for a gun of that size. I think that could be another plus from the internal hammer design.

54 Hey-
All I have to report is, I took possession of a S&W Model 10-5 snub nose that I bought online. It's in great condition, a little loss of bluing at the end of the barrel from going in and out of a holster a bunch of times. I emailed our host Weasel about the serial number, and he puts it at 1966-67 vintage.

I had to buy ammo for it online, because all the .38 JHP I have on hand is +P, and I don't want to run that ammo thru this revolver.

Also for this gun, I have a Galco Combat Master holster and 2 HKS speedloaders on the way. I should have those this week.

I intend to get further CCW training. I have a permit and have passed NRA Basic Pistol, but I want some focused training on how to carry in real world scenarios.

Thanks to Weasel, and enjoy the thread.

58 So I'm at the range one day, safety goggles on, check, ear protection on, check, minding my own business, when I hear BANG! BANG! BANG! coming from next to me. So, taking a pause, I lean back to check on my neighbor (you don't want to lean forward, lest you startle someone that has a loaded gun. Their reflexes might be faster than yours.) This person was yelling BANG after every shot. I think they didn't realize they were doing it, and it was all due to excitement. But, who hasn't had the urge to yell BANG after taking a shot? Honda announced in early October that it will no longer manufacture new gas-powered lawn mowers, signaling the end of an era in lawn care.

A Honda spokesperson stated that the decision was “driven by market forces such as stricter environmental regulations, shifting customer preferences and our focus on growing profitable products in our portfolio.”

Do consider getting a pouch to hold those HKS speedloaders and a bulk pack of A-Zoom snap caps to practice reloading with said speedloaders. I think you can order a double pouch that attaches to your belt from Amazon for about $30. The snap caps will run you about another $30 for 12 snap caps.

Because a cat's reaction time is 0.02 second, half the time it takes a snake to strike from its first motion, 0.04 second. Wow. I don't know what typical human reaction time is, maybe 0.08 or 0.10 second?

74 I was surprised there was a demand for revolver cleaning instructions. It seemed rather straight forward. Then I remembered that newcomers to the hobby might not understand the need. Do my revolvers need to be cleaned after every session? Nope, although thy usually are. (Except for the K-22 which is sensitive to cleaning under the star. That gets cleaned each session.) I find cleaning guns, except for cleaning out cosmoline, relaxing and satisfying. Of course it is absolutely required for black powder guns.

That electric lawnmower? Fine on a small plot, quarter acre or so. Now imagine 5 acres or even 1 acre, you're at the fence and the battery runs down. Do you push it back to the house? 89 Gref, your 0.10sec reaction time is a minimum for normal humans. Sports Illustrated tested M Ali's jab and it was way faster than that, but Ali was superhuman. For the rest of us, it takes at least 0.10sec for the brain's command "pull the trigger" to reach the finger, another tenth for the trigger pull itself, another tenth of lock time for trigger to hit the primer... that's 0.30sec so far, and nothing has left the barrel yet. At 1200ft/sec, your shotshell load will take another tenth to reach a duck at 40yds out. Recall that 1mph=1.5ft/sec, so that duck flying at 50mph is going 75ft/sec; he's flown at least 30 feet in the 0.40sec it takes to take a shot at him. THIS is why no one has ever missed a bird by shooting too far ahead of one. I know, it's almost math, but it's stuff you gotta know.

96 Range Report and a Question:

So, I went "Yin/Yang" today, bringing a 300 BLK PDW AR-15 complete with suppressor along with a Browning replica Winchester Model 71 chambered in 348 Winchester. Had a great time shooting each of them, although admittedly I prefer a modern scope and AR ergonomics compared to the 71. My eyes just aren't made for iron sights at ranges much beyond 100 yards. My question concerns how the Model 71 fed cartridges out of a loaded magazine (tubular magazine). After loading four cartridges into the magazine, the gun wouldn't feed a round into the chamber upon working the lever the first time. However, the gun had no problem picking up a cartridge after every subsequent working of the lever. I don't have much experience with lever actions, but I don't recall having a similar issue with a Winchester Model 94 I owned years ago. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

99 Speaking of generators and this is germane because blaster acres - el rancho del blaster - will have shooting and I am looking how to power things until I bring in utility power. I will have a gas generator of course but I will also likely do some solar. Because Florida is the Sunshine State so solar does work. But I keep seeing things advertised as "solar generators" and it annoys the crap out of me because they are just batteries. Yes, some control electronics, but just batteries. If you don't include solar panels, it isn't generating anything!

Gah. So anyway, shooting. Yeah.

Blaster, solar MIGHT be more efficient as a hot water heater depending on how much SF of solar cells you have, your power requirements, and what else you have that wants power. Batteries of some kind are necessary for storing power from the sun for use at night, of course. Solar hot water heaters are also technologically simpler (and hopefully, cheaper) than an equivalent SF of solar cells. Whichever one you choose, do have a contractor who can do repairs on whatever you install.

Some of my gun related purchases aren't available locally, like black English flints for the flintlocks which I prefer. But the local Cabela's had a pound of CFE Pistol powder. It was a few dollars more than at MidwayUSA but ended up being cheaper without shipping and was immediately at hand. In a similar way, I recently got some limited run pipe tobaccos at a local shop. These runs are never sold in bulk, just 2 ounce tins, so bulk buying isn't an option. Add to that some nice conversations with the clerk and customers while in the store.

Same day found some Norma 380 MHP (monolithic hollow point- all copper slug) via ammo dot seek for $6.99 a box (20 rounds). Very good price for defense load that goes for $1.00 a bullet normally. 300 ft lbs, so not much waeker than range/practice 9mm. Bought all three boxes they had left. Also found recipe for 115gr XTP/HAP that does 200 ft lbs do got a pound of powder for that. alrady have a budn of pills on hand. Might order up 500 starline cases too.

Hopefully she'll find it more comfortable to shoot and go to range more often. She used to do fine with the Ruger 9mm and 1911 45. but at 100lbs dripping wet after thanksgiving feast...

The 'mere' absence of must and mildew isn't enough to keep metalware healthy in long term storage. The actual spot your guns are has to be pretty darn dry permanently, and isolated from humidity. You don't have to have visible seeps or leaks for a basement to be a lot more humid than upstairs. Worth checking.

Absolutely will test out the defense loads. The profile looks like a typical RN range load.

Too good to be true... maybe. Could have been a pricing error too. I found that once with 45acp XTP loads. Cheaper than FMJ. So after the first couple boxes I got enough more to round it out to an even 1000.

Had it happen with another product and they called, said it was an error and asked if I wanted to cancel. I said, yeah, it was too good, but so no worries, cancel it.

157 If you watch the video of the gunfire eminating from the decks of the USS Carney, you'll see the usual 5/38 Naval Rifle, and everybody's favorite R2D2 20mm Phalanx robot. Both, dutifully sending out their projectiles in the direction of Huothi drones and fire-control centers, ashore.

But, there was one other "gun" in the mix, new to me, but I'm sure Horde Knowledge will fill in my lack?

Looked kinda like a single barrel, 40mm Orliekon, in a Sailor operated, open, motorized mount. LOTS of electronics and optics boxes attached to the gun and mount. One Sailor working the gun, and what looked to be like some Brass and NCOs standing by, observing the action.

The "surround" on the open-gun, looked fairly space age-ey, streamlined and I'd guess is some kind of composite armor, a "splinter shield" at the least.

Mount was aft of the 5/30 on the Port side, just ahead of the deckhouse. I was unable to tell if there's a twin , mounted to Starboard. The gun sure did look like it was cross-optimized, suited to both aerial and seaborne targets.

Some of y'all maybe help track this one down? Much appreciation in advance!

Your safe should have a dehumidifier installed internally in order to keep humidity (and rust and mold) at bay. Cloth material (found in many gun carrying cases, storage containers, etc.) can hold moisture that's not visible to the naked eye. Rust can develop if metal surfaces are in contact w/ cloth holding in excessive moisture from high humidity seasons.

I suspect, sir, that you are correct. Still, the gun (for the moment) aside, the mounting, the amazing degree of control that one Sailor had in aiming and training, and what looked to be a veritable feast of optics and electronics, all of which are surely intended to help ensure that projectiles and targets are properly introduced, one to the other?

And one "box" or "screen" is probably reporting on the gun itself. Number of rounds fired, barrel temperature, number of rounds remaining until reload, and etc.

Looks like FUN to SHOOT, too! Some of our better taxpayer's dollars at work?

180 Quick range report, I switch to the CZ P-07 when the damn front sight of my PSA Dagger worked its way loose for the THIRD time.

I do love the Dagger and I shoot it well but that front sight is irritating. I'll email PSA but I'll probably just end up using gorilla glue to hold it in place as blue loctite ain't doing it.

But I digress. Yesterday was a re-familarization with the P-07, both with 9mm and .22 with the OEM Kadet slide. The gun shoots really well, feels good in hand but controls are often a two-handed affair, sadly as I don't have long thumbs. I am noticing my vision isn't great which affected my ability to shoot tight groups at range. The red dot really is a big help and I have a P-07 with a red dot.

The .22 had problems feeding the first two rounds of my usual mag. Could be a weak spring? Or something, as eventually the problem went away, so I don't think it's an ammo problem. But those first 50 rounds...every second round from the mag would fail to feed. More study needed. It's a fine gun though, even if I have to replace a mag spring now.

193 ...And the 5" gun is a 5"/54 gun, the same gun turret setup used on the Spruance class destroyers and Ticonderoga class cruisers. These "destroyers" have more tonnage displacement than a lot of Cold War era cruisers (Belknap and Leahy classes). They're not small ships.

Thanks! I thought "5/50", but for some reason, the "5/38" stuck to my fingertips. But "5/54", that's a wee bit more barrel (and boom!) in the bargain!

I do know that those automated turret, electronically aimed guns, have amassed an impressive record, when used as intended. God Bless the U.S.A. !

The crew for the 5"/54 is well below decks. Their primary job is to load the 5" shells into the feeding system. The WWII 5"/38 mount on Laffey had more than a dozen men to serve the guns. The 5"/54 has, at most, ten crew (probably fewer now than 40 years ago). And the 5"/54 can fire faster than those 5"/38s (six rounds per minute in WWII vs. ten per minute today).

211 MAE,
Usually when front sights or rear sights go loose, it is easier to peen either the slide slot edge on the slide or the front sight itself carefully with a spot punch.

Usually work on the cheapest part first and peen the edge of the sight itself rather than the slide sight as some slides nowadays are so hard that bad things can happen if you try to peen the edges--older firearms generally do not have that problem.

Not a fan of loctite on guns particularly other than a few isolated instances such as sight mount screws etc.

224 Okay to help Weasel's metrics--a few tips to help you clean your firearms.

1) Revolvers--use a size larger than your barrel diameter to clean your cylinders. E.g. Use a 40 cal brush to clean a .357/38 Special firearm. A 357/38 to clean a 32 Smith and Wesson Long/HR Magnum, etc. Don't do this on 22 LR revolvers. For a better clean of 22 LR revolver cylinders, try using a 22 LR rifle length cleaning brush rather than the shorter one for 22 LR handguns.

228 Cheaper than a missile silo, I expect.

With good reason. Fallout shelters weren't laid out to offer any protection from near hits/near misses, and most of them were proof to alpha radiation, dust and flakes only. I worked in a couple of federal buildings that had one in the basement, and they were nothing much. Mostly just the many barrels of water, and once we abandoned the concept, they were ignored for decades, to the point that when crews were finally ordered to dispose of the water, the containers themselves were a hazard.

I got away with a couple of souvenirs, but was grateful we never actually had to rely on the system. It was half-assed.

232 2) a COPPER, not the cruddy newer zinc pennies can be used with light machining oil to remove rust spots on blued metal without ruining the bluing. The oil is used essentially to float the rust particles away and you need to wipe and remove the oil each time you scrub as otherwise red rust is hard enough to scratch your polished bluing.

Are those (presumed) Bushmaster guns going to be standard fit on the Aegis hulls, or will they just serve aboard select ships with Special Missions?

I will say that such a gun on those decks is exactly the medicine needed for the Iranian speedboats, and similar... giving the gun (maybe?) a bit more range than whatever missiles the mooselimbs are wont to use.

That's the way it's pronounced, but it's spelled "Kearney".
Both SF and Portland have streets named Kearney, and you can spot a tourist speaking when they make it rhyme with "hear", instead of "car". Portland also has a few other tourist detectors: Couch (kooch) and Glisten (gleason) streets.

I don't know anything about shelter dog biscuits, but I had a summer job with the Corps of Engineers surveying commercial businesses basements as to their suitability as a CD Fallout Shelter - size, how far below grade, widow exposure, etc. That job made me forever cynical about "public servants". 12 full time people in that office, and they did the work of (generously) 3.

Shot a friend's Python last week. Pretty gun, but no smoother, easier or accurate than my model 28 that's had a little stonework on the action. Especially not for 5X price.
