Tech News

  • This is a real photo taken with a real iPhone. (Apple Insider)

This is an artifact of Apple's computational photography, where the camera takes multiple photos and stitches them together. Or maybe it's a side-effect of a rolling shutter, something that affects other models of digital camera. Or maybe it's a fake.

Or maybe mirrors are portals to another dimension.

  • Tech startup Prophetic has announced the Halo, a $2000 device that triggers lucid dreams through focused beams of ultrasound. (Fortune) (archive site)

The company says that this will allow programmers to write code in their sleep.

Which is the least implausible part of this story, because getting developers to work 24/7 is the dream of the entire tech industry.

Frankly, anyone who buys one of these paperweights deserves to lose their money.

  • After a surge in sales when everyone was locked in their homes during the Wuhan Bat Soup Death Plague, followed by a slump when nothing much happened, PC sales are growing again except they're not, this is a forecast, and it's shit. (Tom's Hardware)

Canalys says that the two drivers of growth will be AI and Arm, with AI powered PCs making up 19% of the market in 2024, and Arm taking 30% of the market in 2026.

    Coughbullshitcough.

18 Two drives in my NAS barfed and died at the same time. This is not an ideal situation since I only had one fault drive. Fortunately I cache everything to some hard drives in my desktop and then sync the changes to the NAS in the middle of the night. This approach has worked well for a decade. Fortunately I had two identical discs in storage which I was able to pop into the NAS. My brand new storage pool is up and running and I'm currently copying over the data to the NAS. I should be fully restored in a couple days. Note to self: buy new hard drives.

56 I wonder if anyone is doing baby steps in something like a non-compiled scripting language. Use AI/ML to read a chunk of code and responsively "figure out" what the coder is trying to do without directly relying on assembly language.

I guess it would be equivalent to letting the processor invent its own internal language instead of having a fixed instruction set like MIPS or whatever.

97 I feel like my town has sensible fence policies. You can't put any kind of significant fence right up along the front of your property, but other than that they really don't give a shit.

I'm kind of supportive. Nobody wants to look at a long street full of a snaggletoothed hodgepodge of everyone's crooked ass falling over faded vinyl bullshit right in their face as they're walking or driving along. That may offend the more stridently libertarian among us, but oh well.

The puppies spend most of their time asleep. So does Mama but outside the box, either on a pad or on the cool floor. Whenever she's full of milk, she carefully steps in and lies down so the feeding frenzy begins. There's little to do except make sure she's lying down properly and occasionally move a puppy around.

We're hoping eyes begin to open in the next couple of days.

Restaurants got brought up, and almost everyone, to a family (and almost all the staff), said they had pretty much stopped going out to eat because it had become unaffordable.

Miss Linda and I used to go out two or maybe three Saturday nights a month for dinner at a local Italian and pizza place or our favorite coffee & diner shop. The latter's prices are still not bad, but the Italian one has got so two dinners w/ tip, no drinks or appetizers, runs close to $40. One night a month now, special occasion level, seems more like it.

We can cook ground beef into some good meals, or make our own pizza with a thin crust, sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni or a second cheese.

Once we move out of this dump, we can re-evaluate.

I-65 in IN is toll? No thanks. That's farther east than I'm looking at anyway. I'm used to bigger-city amenities, of course, but if I can have things delivered, that's okay. Tell City is supposedly only 25 miles from Owensboro, KY, as the crow flies, but it seems to take about 30-40 minutes to drive there -- and there are not that many bridges across the Ohio in that area (?).

I-65 north of Louisville has a toll.

I'd live in Indiana unless you KNEW you would be working or traveling related to work to Kentucky. The Ohio has fewer bridges than you'd think....you can also tack to the right on the map and be near the KOI triangle and still be "in the country" and "near the Ohio" and have access to Cincy and Louisville within an hour.

IIRC Media Matters set up an account and hit F5 like a horde member trying to get certain ads to come up next to companies they could then contact and say "look, there are Nazi ads next to your company!!! Stop advertising with Elon Musk and his wrongthink free speech platform!!!"

Except apparently it's impossible for the twitters to work the way they said they did the actions.

And some people noticed that the margins (or something similar) were wrong and the ads were probably photoshopped.

And Media Matters forgot that Musk and friends had access to the actual records and codes and there were never any records of the ads occuring the way they claimed.

“Go. Fuck. Yourself,” he repeated, pausing and smirking before directly addressing Disney CEO Bob Iger, who’d appeared earlier in the day: “Hey, Bob.”

This is why "redesertification" should be the plan, with a safe corridor to Lebanon, should the Gaza's like to leave rather than be blown up.

Followed by a wall with Lebanon, or perhaps a wall with James LeBron(!), then slow but constant colonization by Israel. War generally means loss of territory and the Palestinians should reap what they have sown esp with their inhuman terror tactics.
