First-World Problems...

snapkey33.jpg

Well...as long as we are on the topic of locks...take a look at this! That is the key to a converted closet in which I keep my wine. And why do I need a lock on it? Well, in a word: teenagers. Why tempt the little bastards?

Although...the only time I should have locked it and I didn't was a long time ago when we had a get-together and a relative brought two friends who turned out to be less than ideal guests.

Anyway, that lock gets a lot of use, and not even 20 years after it was installed it snaps like a cheap Chinese knock-off!

But I took the key to the building supply company where the lock (and a lot of other stuff) was purchased, and they promptly made me a couple of copies from the code on the key.

And they didn't charge me, which I thought was quite unnecessary and quite nice. It's not like I would go somewhere else....they are the best in the business around here and their countermen seem to know everything about everything, which makes it effortless to get the correct stuff.

So...First-World Pleasure?

I would recommend an electronic keypad lock for security and quick entry, they still have a key for backup entry if for some reason you can't gain entry, ie the battery dies.

11 Do not lose the code on the key. I have a heavy file cabinet where I keep a few things I'd rather a casual thief not get into, realized I should have a couple extras, and was able to send the code to an online locksmith (nobody around me had any blanks!) and did not realize until a few days ago the extra keys did not have the code on them like the original.

Number punch to the rescue but... keep the code.

I have a Stack-On, with a dial, and the lock sucks. Don't know why. It's not smooth, if you accidentally stop just a smidge off the number, it won't open.

I should just get another safe, but then I'd have to figure out how to get rid of this one (FWP). Can't just throw it away, don't know who I could give it to. Oh well, guess I'll keep it.

18 Most valuable thing in the world at a place I was at was a key to the shithouse.

It was on a hubcap up by the front desk so if you needed it you had to clang clang on the way to the shitter.

I made copies and handed them out for favors of a non-sexual nature but the recipients had to keep it on the down low so no one would know.

I think by the time I left everyone had a copy of the shithouse key. Think I still got mine somewhere.

21 When I was a youngster, I found a really old long hasp brass combination Master Lock at my grandparents house in a box of stuff. I wanted to use it to lock my bike at school. But nobody remembered the combination any longer.

Dad took me and the lock to Marvin’s Hardware on Falls Ave., and armed with the lock serial #, they wrote the Master Lock company. After an interminable wait of almost 2 weeks, I got a letter in the mail. They had the answer I was seeking. I thought that was amazing, they had a record of the combination numbers.

31 CBD, when you open the wine-door, looks like you use the key (while turning) to draw back the latch. This puts unnecessary strain on the key. Newer keys are made of even softer alloy than in years past, so suggest that you find a way to simply unlock with the key, then turn the knob with your hand.

Also suggest removing the lock and cleaning/lubing the latch assembly and put a puff of graphite into the keyway.

Keeps it operating smooooothly.

We even got a bicycle horn and handlebar streamers for a great nephew's tricycle. The last generation just retired but it was bought out by another local family run hardware store and they run it the same way. The old large is now medium, the old medium is now small, and the new larges are huge. Not to mention they enlarged the fastening hole by about a factor of four, then doubled the price! I've got a show in two weeks!

And, no, I don't want to see a word about The Ring Lord. Their rings suck!

Anyway, I thought to reinforce the entry door so it couldn't be kicked in by screwing 1x2s to the backside in a bordered X-pattern. And buried the hasp and bolted the staple.
I had to get to work one icy night and discovered the padlock frozen fucking solid. I put a propane torch on it, and was running out of time to get to work (short on points!) and finally had to break in with a crowbar, what a bitch! I had no idea all that would be so tough.

79 CBD-- deadbolt, got it.

Advice on lubing the latch's moving parts stands, if you're brave enough to remove & replace this unit onto the door. If not, read on:

Is there any resistance when you turn the key either way? If so, leaving the key fully inserted, open the door & loosen the mounting screws (just a little, only until you can move the cylinder(s) around a little, relative to the main bore. Gently try turning the key after moving the assembly a tiny bit up/down, right/left, until you achieve the very least resistance when turning the key. Hold the unit still in that position while retightening the mounting screws. Check again. Also, sometimes, it's just better to not completely crank down the screws.

85 My FWP: a gopher has been wreaking holy hell on the ground cover on a bank outside our garage. He's been a wily one, and so far no luck in trapping him. (I usually have a high batting average on this.)

Walking up the bank right now is a problem, as I'm in the on-deck circle for hip replacement, and walking up the bank is a trial.

I'm tempted to try something I saw on YT: sticking a flare into a hole, and gently circulating the toxic combustion gases with a leaf blower on the very lowest setting. There's a hole very conveniently near the bottom of the bank, obviating the problem above.

Your point raises another FWP.

My wine collection is kept in a room temperature rack for reds and a wine cooler for whites. I accumulate wines from various sources -- i buy them, I get some as gifts, etc. Over the years much of my storage capacity becomes occupied by bottles in which I have no interest. They just sit there as Cellar Queens taking up space I could use for wines that I like.

I don't want to just toss perfectly good bottles or give them away, so there they sit.

I've considered ending the conundrum by suicide but that seems a little drastic.

Finally pulled it apart yesterday, drum bearings gave up the ghost.
Took me a day but got them replaced and everything back together. I miss my old top loader.

156 We ran into that problem. Our neighborhood wasn't a slum, but a lower working class neighborhood. So we replaced the roof and gutters, fixed a few other problems and called it good.
Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin'

Yeah, I correct myself here, it really is an old-fashioned lower-working-class neighborhood. It's not a slum or anything like that, it's just not... what? Aspirational. We're fine. I have a very nice house, I think, and don't bother spending fixup money on stuff I will NEVER see a return on, like a trick bathroom or some shit. I'll never see that money again. I patch it up as needed knowing the value is in the structure not the ornaments.

What a wonderful shopping experience. I used to live near a small HW store that would do the same thing. Fischers hardware, great people that helped with a number of projects. Now in the big box stores, if you can find someone and make eye contact, they run away.

159 There is a funny story about a guy in his 50s who pissed away his life I think following the Dead or some shit and then inherited a vacant lot here. He pulled a permit from the City to build a house which, if you are building it yourself, allows occupancy in 'a temporary structure'. He then had a porta-potti delivered and set up a for-real Plains Indian teepee next to his old van.

At Home Despot i get my verteran discount by merely entering the phone number associated with my account.
At the Lowes I have to also scan my ID and I guess it to use OCR to find my name on it (the state ID also has a bar code). PITA... rather see the Despot.

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at December 03, 2023 03:38 PM (cOq4q)

161 The guy lived in it for a year then renewed the permit for another year. He went back the 3rd year and the City was like, "Yeah, we don't think you're building a house at all we think you're living in a teepee." So he got signatures from ALL his neighbors stating nobody gave a shit what he did, but finally the city told him he had to 'build' SOMETHING, so he built his own log cabin about 12x16 feet on the lot.
He is still legendary around here, he's our hero

I hate to say it, I honestly don't know why somebody that knows what they're doing would be working a job like that, unless they own the place.

Same with a parts counter with auto parts. If you have the knowledge, it's better served not making minimum wage behind a register.

It seems like post-Covid, places are lucky to hire someone that even shows up, much less knows anything.

Posted by: All Hail Eris at December 03, 2023 03:45 PM (Rz7ER)

172 Man, I read stories here from people in HOAs and I'm stupefied at the compliance. Nobody where I live would do this. There is simply no money and no money to condemn anything to even tear it all down! Nobody here would tolerate the kind of pissant behavior from people I read about here.
Nobody.
I mean, it would just lead to violence, people where I live don't care if they go to jail or what, it just... they don't send well-dressed women out to measure grass, they'd get mugged. I'm at this point baffled at why anyone would, in this USA, bother with property values or 'nice anything' at all.

175 Our new washer & dryer are Speed Queen brand. (Thanks Horde for advice.) They look like the dials would rotate to show time remaining on the cycle, but, no such indicator!

Our new oven is some foreign-made thing. Worst bit: When the oven reaches the set temperature, a light xomes on (okay), and it honks loudly three times!

At least the new LP fridge door-open alert is a gentle pinging.

I think all appliances should have programmable ring tones.

I really hope that Stanley is doing some destructive testing on random samples of their product when they're imported from China to ensure that the product quality still meets the original design specifications.

Look up the term "tofu-dregs-project" or "tofu construction".

In China there are two considerations to ethics:
1. Did we win? Then we were right.
2. NEVER embarrass the party. If you do that, you're always in the wrong.

I had to laugh during corporate ethics training in North America when the training materials would make a claim that high ethical standards are the same the world over. An obvious falsehood that immediately let me know the ethics training was both unethical, and was bullshit, and was only present so the corporate leaders could tick off a check-mark requirement for some government contract they had.

I'm tempted to try something I saw on YT: sticking a flare into a hole, and gently circulating the toxic combustion gases with a leaf blower on the very lowest setting. There's a hole very conveniently near the bottom of the bank, obviating the problem above.
