89 Republicans Join Democrats to Expel George Santos from Congress; Republicans Also Refuse to Hold Vote to Expel Fire-Alarm-Puller and Insurrectionist Jamaal Bowman

The vote is just finishing up.

It took a two-thirds vote to expel him, so all the Republicans had to do was not give enough votes to the minority of Democrats in the House to get to two thirds.

From CNN:

The House voted to expel indicted GOP Rep. George Santos over ethics violations, making him only the sixth lawmaker ever to be kicked out of the chamber. The resolution passed with a tally of 311-114, with 105 Republicans voting in favor. All four top House GOP leaders voted to keep Santos in Congress.

George Santos is being expelled because he lied and committed some minor crimes. In the past. Not as a Congressman.

Jamaal Bowman also lied and committed crime -- he pled guilty to falsely pulling the fire alarm, and did so as a Congressman, to block an act of Congress (which we all now is insurrection).

But few Republicans have the guts to vote to expel him.

Now that Santos has been expelled, that resolution will not move forward.

@ChayaRaichik10

They won't expel Swalwell, Schiff, Omar, Tlaib, Bowman for actual treason but they'll expel Santos. This is why we lose. I'm so sick of cowardly and spineless Republicans!!!!

Republicans also voted, of course, to strip Santos' constituents of any Representation in Congress. They elected Santos as part of a general repudiation of Democrat politicians in New York State. But now they'll have no Representative at all, at least until Kathy Hochul schedules a special election, which of course she can take months and months and months to do.

(Representatives cannot be appointed or replaced by a governor. They can only be elected by the people. But state laws vary as to how long one can dally in calling a special election.)

Good work, Republicans.

With your every word and deed you demonstrate anew the necessity of your complete repudiation and abandonment.

When the GOPe relies on Democrat votes to remove Santos, it's just good governance.

Of course not. They have no beef with Bowman or any other Democrat. They have a problem with rogues within their own ranks - the kind of people that aren't down with the Uniparty and will question - or even worse, remove - the GOP's feckless and corrupt leaders.

This is punishment for removing McCarthy. It makes the majority smaller, but that doesn't matter. They don't want an effective majority anyway.

There will be. The GOP grew explosively when the Whigs failed.

And eventually - at the risk of repeating the last thread - it resulted in a war. The same may happen again. The US system lends itself to two parties. When one of them dies, it's a fairly traumatic event. But the GOP *will* die unless it undergoes titanic reform, and it is utterly uninterested in reform.

I think the reform is happening, it's just glacially slow.

The fact that no GOPe candidate can get within 50 points of Trump in the primary is an important part of that.

Really, though, the party needs to be taken over from the ground up. Taking over state apparatuses and fundraising so that changes can happen there first. Hard to tell how well that's going, but when a state like TN starts making serious noises about dropping federal funds for education, it does make you wonder.

Came across this in a novel over 50 years old:

“I’m aware of their real purposes,” the vice president said. “They want to do us in. Are you telling me I should let them?”

"Mr. Vice President,” the State Department’s expert said, “Mr. Vice President! Certainly, we do not advocate that. We simply want to be helpful, that’s all. We think that style and method are so important in arriving at an accommodation to their views, Mr. Vice President. They are so important.”

“I want them to arrive at an accommodation to our views,” the vice president said. “What’s the style and method for that?"

“That is such an impossible goal,” the State Department’s expert confessed with a charming smile, “that we don’t even worry about that.”

---------
The donors run the GOP and the donor class in the GOP is interested in status quo of open borders, military actions everywhere, low taxes on the wealthy plus corporations, and offshoring. They are also much more liberal than the bulk of the Republican party on social issues such as transexuals, crime and criminals, abortion on demand, and other such issues.

So roughly half of the GOP in Congress represent the donor class rather than their constituents which leads to an inability to build a successful platform. The Whigs disintegrated because they could not answer the question of the day which was slavery and their attempts to substitute Unionism and manifest destiny ultimately split the party. The GOP is repeating the same formula today in not addressing the key issues requiring a change in status quo and that is because of the GOP's donor and candidate class.

There is some credence to the uni-party theory, BUT the "Republicans" have to pose more for their audience.

The Dems have to pretend they don't like corporate graft, but they only sell out their voters by foot-dragging on real socialism. "Republicans" in the DC party despise their constituency and stab you in the back at every opportunity.

Nobody talks about "candidate quality" in blue circles, because the DC Party perfectly fits the Democrats. But you must have a loyal representative of the DC party on the "Republican" side, so we talk about "candidate quality". So they can dissuade you away from voting for people who don't represent DC.

Britain has and had the same problem with its Conservative party with the 'toffs'.

The Democrats were long split between the populists and the elites and is a coalition of groups that believe themselves to be the 'outs' and that deserve their share of the pie (aka soft Marxist/Socialists) and more recently that has been hijacked by the identity movement of social Marxism focusing on race and sex as the enemy of the people.

*Yawn.* Conservatives will be upset, call for hearings and fold their tents.

Next they get rid of Clarence Thomas and appoint a "moderate" to the SC that the usual Republican Senators will vote for out of moderate conviction and continue to run the country as moderate commies moderately ignoring constitutional law do, mostly peacefully, but hey, omelettes, amiright?

306 Didn't he write the novel Advise and Consent?

In an analogy to the Roman Republic, a dramatist or essayist who wrote about the tremendous patriotic effort Rome put forth to defeat Hannibal would not reflect the venality and corruption of the 130s BC onward.

Yes, and he wrote sequels to Advise and Consent with the curious twist of writing two alternate books ending the series depending on the cliffhanger outcome in the second one of the series.

They don't because of what whig keeps pointing out.

Their objective isn't to win elections or govern, it's to siphon off donor cash. Big dollar donors don't want popular things, so in order to keep the donor dollars rolling in, the GOP has to be no more than an ineffective speedbump to the actual engine of "progress" which is the Democrat party (which is, at this point, as much about graft as the GOP is).

Actual policy is written by the administrative state. The rest is graft. It doesn't have to be that way, but it's the show the donors want.

It would be a positive step for the voters to turn their backs on the party that actively colludes with its opposition to deny the will of the voters, but I just lived through 2 cycles where that happened, and we're still Team Red v. Team Blue.

Count me as doubtful that this manifests.

Anyone that has seen Congress critters or other politicians such as governors up close in their native environment with their obsequious and sometimes traitorous staffs would believe that they are saints. 428 DeSantis biggest donor recently switched support to Trump. Is Trump stepping and fetching now?
Posted by: Drive by
--------
The only way to play donors is from a position of strength where they pay for access but are precluded from much influence. That means the candidate can take them or leave them. If the donors were instrumental in getting the candidate into office, then you owe them a greater burden.

DeSantis is a very smart guy, very locked down, but he had the misfortune of getting Cruz leftovers to populate his campaign because of donor pressure most likely. Essentially those idiots ran the campaign as revenge for Cruz in 2016 instead of NASCAR like drafting behind Trump and ambiguity. Challenging a former president for nomination (or a former/current VP) is always difficult in the first place but his team blew a lot of money on pointless media too early and their stunts have backfired like the Where's Melania idiocy.
