Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

But That's My Thing

Nothing succeeds like success, and nothing is better than being responsible for the success. One consequence of this can be riding on a once-deserved reputation. When this happens, the knowledge that it is exactly that - a once-deserved reputation, though no longer - can come as a smack in the face. "But we do that! That's our thing!" will ring true to the insiders who utter it but will result in scorn from outsiders.

This happens when the legendary performance that built that reputation is no longer legendary. It slips down into mere high competence, and is unlikely to stop there. The slip can continue all the way down into "laughingstock" as far as outsiders are concerned. Within the organization, though, the status of what once was often continues despite no longer being even remotely justified. Eventually, this attitude gets checked and checked hard.

For example, Chrysler considered itself "The Engineering Company" for far, far longer than could ever be justified. After the bailout and short-term salvation of the K-car, Chrysler needed more and so in the late 80s, it bought AMC to get Jeep. With that acquisition, Chrysler picked up the vital Jeep brand, but also a lot of new engineering talent and processes. It was unthinkable that any of Chrysler's processes could change in favor of those brought along with a bunch of poor also-rans, yet many did. Chrysler wasn't "The Engineering Company" anymore. It hadn't been for a long time, and reality finally imposed itself.

We're seeing a similar dynamic starting to play out in America's cultural industry. Disney head man Bob Iger and his various executives all talk about their storytelling prowess. Sure, they've lost some focus recently in the content crush for streaming, but they're still "The Storytelling Company" and are back on form! They craft tales like no other, and are the best in the business! It's delusional, and reality is in the process of smacking them in the face. They believe their own line, but they're the only ones who do.

Yet Disney is just a microcosm of the entire industry. All of them have shifted focus from making products to being activists. The only way out of this kind of problem is an infusion of fresh blood - but the fish rots from the head, and the head must go in order to even make an attempt at such an infusion. The non-activist talent was purged by the chieftains, and so the chieftains must be purged before talent can try to return. This same medicine is needed across the board if the cultural industry wants to prevent simply rotting away into nothing.

The worst offenders like Disney are starting to learn this now, and the rest will catch up quickly as the red ink continues to flow. They will change and get "back to basics," or they will die and be replaced by new players. Even if third parties or the state step in to force consolidation and destroy competition in order to ensure that the propaganda spice flows, these organizations can at best limp along as zombies. Deluded cries of "but stories are our thing" will not make it true.

They have squandered their reputations and cut down the giants on whose shoulders they stood. Until they make sweeping and extremely painful changes, their lights can do nothing more than flicker in empty auditoriums.

One possible outcome. I don't think that death is inevitable yet, but they're getting close. They need a turnaround, and it needs to happen soon. Not just Disney, but the entire industry.

The bright spot in this is probably Warner, where Zaslav is trying to undo some of the destruction that came before. He wants money, and that means making a product people want, and that means leaving The Message in the background if not at the door.

Peltz might be able to pull off the same at Disney, though Iger is fighting that hard. I hope Iger fails because I'd much rather see America's cultural industry undergo massive reform than die out.

Fantasia has no plot, just a series of animated vignettes, each set to a different piece of classical music -- some dramatic, some playful or almost silly, and the final one with Satan and his demons coming out to play at night was the capper. But -- we are shown that the coming of daylight and the praying of monks is essential to drive the evil out.

But it seems like virtually everything is black, mixed-race, or gay (or all of the above) in entertainment. It's even crept into smaller niches, like horror writing and role playing games. The DIE cup overfloweth in television and movies.

And while maybe that's not sustainable in blockbusters that have to have broad appeal to make a profit, I don't see why they can't or won't keep cramming this down our throats everywhere else. What are people going to do, embargo all television and movies? The NFL experience says they won't.

It might be, and it's new. Anime has been a thing for a while, but always niche. It is still niche, but the niche is much bigger. In terms of mainstream appeal, the Koreans are even stronger (Korean and American cinema/TV language is compatible, even though the literal languages are not).

For generations, the American market was essentially invincible when it came to foreign interlopers - but not anymore. This is why forced consolidation to maintain the propaganda complex (which I think is possible) will also be a losing game without a major censorship regime to go with it. If the domestic product sucks - and it does - there are decent foreign products. There's a reason those foreign products are finally making inroads.

Dr. Who just did this with their most recent "special". After their first female doctor was terrible, and tanked ratings (and completely retconned the character's origin to make him gender fluid), they brought back a popular past Doctor for the special...

Only to have the female characters berate him...literally saying he can't understand the situation because he's "male presenting". Nagging him for referring to an alien as a "he" for "assuming its pronouns". The female character has a trans-daughter who gets taunted by neighborhood kids, and they grumble about being "deadnamed". And so much more....the clips are all over YouTube, and they're so cringe.

Posted by: Pudhinhead at November 29, 2023 11:06 AM (ntk8v)

Eisner wasn't all that. He let the Disney animation slide into irrelevancy, and he started the company on the road to make more adult-oriented movies with starting the Hollywood Films division. He was a great manager of the brand, of course - the stock went up like a rocket under his stewardship - but he needed a solid #2 like Frank Wells to help run the company. When he died in that helicopter crash, Eisner lost his anchor. He couldn't hold onto Katzenberg because of his ego, and he was close to getting rid of Iger before he really had a chance to shine.

Iger closed the deal on Pixar (which Eisner couldn't - Jobs hated him), which revitalized the animation division, and he closed the deal on Marvel as well. DIS stock did even better under Iger. Until it didn't, of course. Iger went back when he didn't have to. He should have just moved on.

85 I'll let you all in on a little secret: Disney and the others were never that good. Some of their earlier and pre-woke work was good or at least entertaining. But most was mediocre, no matter how many (paid off) critics and influencers masterbated to it, nor how many viewers joined the seal-clap circus.

What's happening now isn't some major deviation from the normal. What's happening is two-fold: One, audiences have finally realized how mediocre this shit is, and are growing tired of the same crap crapped out year after year. The earlier good stuff now seems like masterpieces by comparison.

And two, the woke shit has opened people's eyes to how weak this all was. The woke shit is like a big shitstain on a mediocre painting: when you see it, your eyes are drawn to it, and then you start looking for other flaws. And guess what? You find them.

Disney sucks. No doubt. But it's not so much a drastic fall from grace as it is just audiences finally noticing the worms in the apple they've been eating.

86 75 Right. The real talent - that is, the creative talent - has been run out of the company. They have box-ticking "personality hires" (nice reminder, Lizzy @14) without vision or creativity. Their technical folks have skill, but technicians aren't usually great at crafting narrative.

The one exception I wanted there to be was Pete Doctor at Pixar, but since he became a leader in the company (CEO, or CCO, or something, not looking it up), none of the magic he injected into Monsters Inc or even Inside Out has come across on anyone else's project.

I get the sense that he's just easily pushed around as an administrator.

something like that but he was also a kiss up and a "stakeholder" type guy - meaning very sweet to his undertalented underlings

Posted by: BlackOrchid at November 29, 2023 11:28 AM (AcWfM)

I'd slightly disagree with that assessment of Cook. His strength was in Logistics and Supply Chain operations. He solidified the manufacturing partnership with Foxconn, and was able to get the CCP to make quality products in quantity for a global market. The CCP can't do that practically anywhere else. He's not the product visionary that Jobs was, but his ops knowledge enabled him to get every last dollar out of what original IP Jobs oversaw. That's no mean feat. On the creative side, of course, I think you're right.

Look, it can't be done, okay? It isn't about serviceability, it's about usability. A removable battery means a removable back case, which means a thicker midframe, which means constraints in component layout, which means fitment issues.

If there were a removable battery - something only a small percentage of users actually want, given the pace of change and the natural upgrade cycle - then the device would be as much as 1mm thicker, if not even more. Non-replaceable batteries are a small price to pay for a millimeter thinness benefit.

160 Personally, I think the issue with Western cultural work, literary etc. is a Judeo-Christian dogma that any communication is, or should be, instructional. That a movie, book, TV show, etc. has to have a 'message' or an instruction to be legitimate.
I have never seen any evidence that the vast majority of people attend movies or read books or watch TV to learn anything at all. They are there to be entertained.
The instructive dogma leads to people entering the business, and it is a business, with agendas when the entire point is to entertain. So instead of getting people who just like to make entertainment, they get sour scolds yelling at their audiences who then quite legitimately stay away in droves.

195 I read a very interesting piece by John Nolte at Breitbart a little while ago in which he talked about the role of cable TV in the decline in so many entertainment companies. (Clay Travis at Outkick has done something similar about ESPN.)

The bottom line was that cable subscriptions provided Disney, ESPN, and others with a guaranteed cut of cable fees regardless of whether any of the cable subscribers actually watched their content. (Example: I think ESPN gets $11 or so for every subscriber even though fewer than 25% of them ever watch ESPN.) That broke the historical connection between the companies and consumers: they no longer had to care about whether their offerings were watched or not.

Cable subscriptions have been falling for 10 years but the companies were so hooked on the cable model that they still haven't adjusted. So while some of Disney's problem may be contempt for their consumers, some if it is a product of relying on the cable income stream for so many years.

something like that but he was also a kiss up and a "stakeholder" type guy - meaning very sweet to his undertalented underlings

which is why nothing of import gets done there anymore

do you think Elon coddles soft skinned youthful devs? right. do you think Tim does? he sure does.

219 Saw the last 10 minutes of a 2021 Hallmark Christmas movie last evening. It had an Asian American woman, straight white guy and a newly in love lesbian couple. Diversity for the win. The cringe came from how they portrayed one of the lesbians. They made her into a calf eyed woman mooning over her love as the love sang a Christmas song. Good grief that's a bit too over the top even for Hallmark.

224 a buddy of mine had a sweet job that subsidized his car payments so he drove very nice rides...Caddy, Lincolns, etc. Every couple of years he got a new car. Then he bought a Mercedes.
Didn't realize they only hold value if the maintenance is documented.
"Who's going to pay $1200 for a damn tune-up!" He did his own upkeep. When he went to trade it in he found out they really had ways of knowing whether a 'qualified MB tech' did the work. Let's just say forging the maintenance record did not end well for him.
The damn thing basically had a blue title type reputation stuck on it from MB.

AltE has solar panels for $0.25/Watt ... so just buy more panels? The "20% is a little misleading ... that is % of total "power" from the sun, but a 400W panel will still produce 400 watts in full sun.

A lot of solar stuff is still getting cheaper and better, but still silly to get rid of coal/gas/nukes. (even more evil to have India/China others keep using real power and move all manufacturing there.)

The big problem with 3D at home is that your screen has to be YUGE for more than one person sitting exactly in front of the screen's exact center at the perfect height to get a decent 3D effect and no splitting headaches.

250 LenNeal - about being "instructional" vs "entertainming" - watch "Sullivan's Travels" (1941) by Preston Sturgis. What you have just written is the underlying theme of the entire film
(Yes it's very meta for a film about how you don't need a big message actually has a big message)
And Sullivan's Travels has had a revival of interest recently because of the Coen Brothers. In it, a director (Joel McCrea) travels the south looking for inspiration for the Great American Movie about the Depression that he wants to make. He drops the idea when he realizes people want entertainment, not lectures.

The movie he keeps talking about making (in 1941) was to be called "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

I bought a 400 watt portable eight foot panel back in August. I *may* have hit 400 watts once in the months since. Last week on a perfectly blue cloudless sky it was producing 200 watts. The only time it got that close to 400 was after a torrential rainfall washed all the shit out of the air. Was it all the crap from the Canadian wildfires? I suspect to some degree. Heck, it's doing well enough to have won the second weekend in the face of two new major movies (Napoleon and Wish).

It underperformed compared to the previous entries of a series that hasn't been in the public consciousness for a decade, though. It was made relatively cheaply at $100 million or so, so the film's going to make a profit and Lionsgate happy.

Those who lack the idea of service outside of self offer their "recognition" only by sychophantic public worship and praise for servant leaders, but they neither understand them nor truly admire them.

I live in foggy mornings and sunny afternoons. That leaves a dirt film on my truck within 3 days after washing it. My educated guess is that would cut efficiency down 30-50%. Another thing people don't figure on is cleaning solar cells bi-weekly to get those marketing efficiencies.

405 From what I can gather, you'd have to be willing to live like it's 1823, not 2023. To be truly 'off-the-grid.'

But by all means, we should do that sort of thing nationally.
Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 29, 2023 12:09 PM (Q4IgG)

Off-Gridders go from wanting to live wholly self reliant to moderately self reliant, there is not one level. It goes from "we won't even use nails" to "1970"
I think some of it is LARPing, and a fair amount of it is a drive for anti-fragility, to counter the current system which is overly reliant on everything working the way it is supposed to, with no margin for screwup.
self reliance is not a bad thing, and it is an individual choice to what the risks and benefits are.

However, it is crucial to remember that the order does not guarantee the revelation of any specific information. The FBI will determine what information can be disclosed while adhering to legal and national security protocols.

410 The anti work crowd shouts about the high pay of CEOs. However, the idea is that there is a lot of risk in directing a company and a lot of talent, knowledge, and experience is required to succeed.

Conversely, we currently have a generation of Music Men, like the play, that are selling things that customers neither want nor need. In Disney's case, it is selling a skinsuit product, movies with the soul and blood sucked out and sewn around D.I.E. and Critical Consciousness (aka Wokeness).

The reasons are unclear: they aren't scamming for money because they are losing it hand over fist. Maybe they are true believers. Maybe they fear the unwashed massivenesses (few in number, greater in weight). Maybe they just want to watch the world burn.

It is said that justice grinds slowly. Problem is, they are destroying the millstone, the water wheel, and the windmill while we wait. These CEOs are destroying companies. They need to be ejected.
