The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid. Frank Zappa

Quote II

“This was an extremely volatile situation involving a dangerous and unpredictable suspect who put so many of our residents and police officers in harm’s way,” Police Chief Christopher Francesconi

Quote III

“Despite our efforts to reduce costs this past year, our cost structure for where we need to be is still too big.” Spotify co-founnder and CEO Daniel Ek

Plastic surgeons have revealed the type of rear-end Americans find most attractive.

The findings, from two studies published in an academic journal, show that, size is not the most important factor when it comes to an aesthetically pleasing derriere on women, despite the 'Kardashian effect' on beauty standards.

In one study, by surgeons at Loma Linda University in California, experts recruited 1,100 men and women and asked them to look at pictures of eight different sets of female buttocks, which the doctors had digitally generated.

Well, there goes ordering coffee on the old air flight.

It's no secret that there are some dirty parts of a plane. The seat-back pockets have held plenty of nasty items and aren't often cleaned, and the tray tables and seatbelts often aren't sanitary either. Then you have passengers with awful habits like putting bare feet on arm rests or drying bathing suits on their seats. But one flight attendant has revealed something particularly disgusting that goes on in the friendly skies, and if you or a loved one ever drinks coffee or tea on planes, you'll want to know about it.

There have been studies that the water on many planes is unsafe due to bacteria, since the tanks that hold the water are rarely cleaned, so already it might be risky to get coffee or tea onboard if they aren't using bottled water, but even if they do use water from bottles, there is a far more disturbing issue, and a flight attendant named Kevin shared what the gross problem is on TikTok.

Piss on it takes on a whole new meaning.

York, Pennsylvania is one of the worst cities in the state. It’s very violent, and the residents would shoot someone for simply looking toward them. There is a golf course – Heritage Hills – which is fabulous, but that’s about all you’ll find good there.

Any hoo, a York man gave $300 to a woman in exchange that the woman would, um, urinate on the man.

It seemed like a straightforward arrangement: I give you $300. You urinate on me in the bathroom of the Days Inn across from the Ryder rental office in York, Pennsylvania.

40 Christy is a good debater and should be their nominee, but won't be. Nikki would certainly line him up for VP. He is right, Ramaswamy shouldn't be on the stage. The GOP needs to clean up its party of celebrities with no policies.

Christi is the most reasonable sounding repuke on the stage. Maybe in the party. Good for us that he won't win a single primary.

He pissed me off when he said Joe Biden had never won anything outside of Delaware! Insulting my state and our favorite son at the same time. And he thought he had come up with a good slogan.

Christie is positioning himself to be Haley’s surrogate, try to make her the contender against Dump, and continue working to torpedo Dump through his new role.

Christie calling anyone an obnoxious blowhard is pure comedy gold. He's another one of those people who make me wonder how they have gotten this far in life without someone kicking the shit out of them.

46 Electric vehicles are better than gas-powered cars in winter—here’s why

Bullshit. Internal-combustion engines make more power in cold temperatures. Denser air means more air-fuel mixture, by weight, can fill the cylinder. Hence, more power to the wheels. About 30 seconds of warm-up is all you need on a modern computer-controlled engine, before driving off sedately. And my Suburban starts to put out useful heat from the heater once I have driven a mile. Air resistance to the motion of the vehicle is really a non-factor at the speeds most people usually drive.

The article attributed it to racism, capitalism, non-socialized medicine blah blah blah.

Let me explain why this happened unlike the article. In the last 40 years we've imported tens of millions of third worlders, obviously many of them women. And they are shorter on average.

Since no one goes hungry in America any more their kids will increase in stature - I know many short immigrants with tall kids - but we've just taken in so many people that the height has gone down.

And, even granting that premise is true, which it might be if the vehicles only do short trips, a 15% loss of a range in a fuel powered vehicle simply means an extra fuel stop in the course of a 500 mile trip, or 500 miles of commuter driving. Electric vehicles see a lot more than a 15% drop in range; might be closer to 50%. And once you are out of juice, you are off the road for several hours. I gas up, have a pee, grab a coffee, and am on the road again inside of ten minutes.

104 This day is call'd the feast of Miklos.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Miklos, and gratis spirits
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil frighten his neighbours,
With a mere "To-morrow is Saint Miklos."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say "These wounds I had on Miklos' day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages, and hangovers
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar as the household Cook Book of Deplorables—
Mike the Hammer, Ben Had and JT,
The Earl of Skip and Cicero, Publius and his Duchess —
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.

She walks away in a huff. A few minutes later, she walks back, the man looks her up and down again, and says, "I'd like a Quickie!". More frustrated this time, she walks off in a huff.
Finally, a third time she asks bruskly, "WHAT TO YOU WANT TO ORDER!". He looks her up and down and gain, and once again says, "I'd like a Quickie", to which she slaps him and walks off.

166 Rob Johnson @FreeRangeLawyer Dec 5
Tomorrow, I'm flying to Los Angeles for oral argument in what may be the most important Fourth Amendment case pending in the United States today. The basic facts: The FBI broke open and searched hundreds of safe deposit boxes without any reason to think the boxholders did anything wrong.

U.S. Private Vaults, a business in Beverly Hills, offered a private and secure place where people could store their most valued, sensitive possessions. In March 2021, the FBI raided USPV, broke open every single box in the vault, and looked through all the contents. The FBI ran all cash in the vault by drug dogs, opened envelopes and photographed the contents, and ultimately sent everything worth over $5,000 to asset forfeiture---initiating proceedings to keep that property forever. [...]

So why is the case so important? The fundamental principle at stake is that if the government wants to search and seize your property, it has to have some reason to think you did something wrong. The FBI came up with a blatant scheme to circumvent that fundamental principle, and, so far, no court has held them to account.

I still remain just, I don't know, divorced from most people about that. Because those two events were so damn egregious, in my mind. And that era was when a community college professor told us - because he was Ex-Mil and we were mostly GI Bill - that this was not the time to join ANYTHING, because Big Brother was watching. And he was right.

Yet, I watched folks continue to back the blue, no matter what, even after the Federal Blue did all that. Watched 'em insist on backing it here.

One of the inherent problems with EV's is they are inherently disposable, they have a roughly ten year life span before you have to replace the extraordinarily expensive battery.

So the EV retards that go on about, hey I don't have to pay for oil changes or change fluids or other maintenance item, well buddy you are in for a big bill at around 100k miles or you'll have a brick in your driveway.

216 Love the crow article--new life goal!

The house I grew up in had woods going down a hill to a creek from the back yard, and we had all kinds of wildlife, including a good-size flock of crows in the woods.

There was a sassafras tree next to the back porch, that mom had birdfeeders in, and a stump of a branch trimmed from growing across the porch that she would put suet or peanut butter or bacon fat on in winter for the birds that liked it.

One year just post-Thanksgiving when I was small, she told me this story when I got up (she popped awake pre-dawn every day, and started her day with 6 a.m. mass every weekday):

She had picked the turkey carcass when she was cleaning up after the feast, and thought the crows might like the remnants to glean, so before she went to bed she threaded it over that short stump branch.

When she got up and was starting coffee and bacon, she heard a racket out back, so went to peek.

The crows, 12-15 of them, were in the sassafras tree making all kinds of racket, and while she watched, several of them started maneuvering the turkey carcass up the stump of that trimmed branch.

When they got it to the top, 2 or three of them took it in tandem and flew it off into the woods, with the rest flying shotgun and cawing like mad.

>>It took a while for my ICE car to warm up, but warm up it did.

The marvel of the ICE engine is that it uses "waste" heat in order to heat up your vehicle, an EV not having antifreeze or a heater core has to use generate the electircal necessary to heat a coil that in turn will heat the car, stealing range.

Similarly with cooling, an ICE vehicles AC compressor is driven off of a belt on the engine, an EV not having any belts has to, again use mains power to power the compressor, stealing range.

As has been noted, EV's are stupid.

It gets even more Rube Goldberg than that. Teslas and others use *heat pumps* to heat the cabin. The idea is more efficiency. They also integrate it with the battery cooling system and it's a hellava complex mess.

And then Li-ion batteries can't operate below 32F. Temp drops to that, and there is a "misreaction" that starts to happen that will fuck up the battery and be a fire hazard.

There is some warm up procedure, and all that. It's a fucking mess.

Reminds me of a joke.

A beautiful woman went up to the bar in a quiet rural pub. She gestured alluringly to the bartender who approached her immediately.
The woman seductively signaled that he should bring his face closer to hers. As he did, she gently caressed his full beard.

"Are you the manager?" she asked, softly stroking his face with both hands. "Actually, no," he replied. "Can you get him for me? I need to speak to him," she said, running her hands beyond his beard and into his hair.

"I'm afraid I can't," breathed the bartender. "Is there anything I can do?" "Yes. I need for you to give him a message," she continued, running her forefinger across the bartender's lip and slyly popping a couple of her fingers into his mouth and allowing him to suck them gently.

What should I tell him?" the flustered bartender managed to stammer.

"Tell him," she whispered, "There's no toilet paper, hand soap, or paper towels in the ladies room.

Mrs. Reason has gone to Austin several times to speak against it. She's called a MAGA troublemaker by the Dems and a liberal troublemaker by the squish Republicans.

Point of order here: the A/C compressor is a parasitic load on the engine, so it does have a (tiny) fuel consumption penalty. Which is largely offset by reduced drag afforded by driving with the windows closed. And, for urban driving at least, you could add software to make the compressor run only when the car is decelerating, as in the approach to a red light, in which case it provides improved engine braking, with no fuel penalty. But probably not worth the trouble.

From one of the many Congressional hearing clips on YouTube, apparently the DoJ is suing Musk's SpaceX for hiring too many Americans/U.S. citizens.

That fucker Obama really set things into a severe downward spiral; there's a Thomas Sowell video I've watched where he goes into some detail as to why Obama was the worst president. Many said if Trump won in 2016, it would only be a temporary pause. Seems history might bear them out. I'm watching Kristallnacht on college campuses unfold before my very eyes and university presidents are incredibly ahistorically ho-hum. Truly frightening.

Delivered a bunch of stuff, pile of books, then (of course) stopped by a Museum for whom I've done some work and (of course) replaced them (at least!), by size and weight.

In really severe cold, say -30 and worse, the lube in the final drive and wheel bearings may become so gummy that it causes drag. But after a few miles driving, it will warm up. Snow on the road surface, of course, causes drag, and affects electric cars, too. And any adverse condition that causes more power demand is worse with an electric car, because they have less range in reserve. If heavy snow and strong headwinds cause my truck mileage to drop from 18 to 14 mpg going from Whitecourt to Grande Prairie, it will cost me a few bucks. If I'm driving an e-car, it might leave me stranded between Fox Creek and Valleyview. In a blizzard. (main highway from Edmonton northwest to Grande Prairie and on to join the Alcan Highway at Dawson Creek. Going to Alaska? This is your route.)

399 Point of order here: the A/C compressor is a parasitic load on the engine, so it does have a (tiny) fuel consumption penalty.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon'

My 1984 Olds Firenza station wagon with the (putting it charitably) anemic 1.8 liter engine would barely move with the A/C running and would overheat when running A/C when stopped in traffic for more than 20 minutes.

Quote, Wikipedia: 'Since peak hp and torque came on at higher RPM, acceleration in these cars was quite sluggish, with a test 1982 Pontiac J2000 accelerating from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 16.3 seconds, with a 1⁄4 mile (402 m) time of 20.6 seconds.'

It's quite possible to over-cool an automobile engine. Around here it is not at all uncommon to see cars or trucks with cardboard slipped between the grille and the radiator, or a quilted winter front snapped on over the radiator. Big trucks often use winter fronts, or radiator shutters. I ran cardboard in my GM Diesel Suburbans all winter long.

435 In Budapest and elsewhere, the roofs of buildings have spike-y things on them.

443 Probably referring too far back up the thread, but as a Magnolia State citizen by both birth and tenure, I can't help but point out that there is no single Mississippi accent - arguably, there are five, but definitely four, and you can recognize the difference.

Also, no offense to Louisiana, but you probably don't want to tell someone in Mississippi that they have a (partial) Louisiana accent - most particularly when Ole Miss is playing LSU.
