It's the parent's fault as much as the kid's. When my girls graduated from college, they were allowed to spend a year back at home saving money on rent so they could save up for grad school or a house, but they had to carry their share of the chores, and it was understood that if you were blowing lots of money on frivolities, the deal ended.
You aren't doing your "kids" any favors by allowing them to defer adulthood.

I look at it this way. You know those music reaction videos? Well, try explaining that you didn't just buy a song back then, usually you had to buy an album. When the minimum wage was around $2.30/hour, an album was around $4-5, one to two hours of labor before taxes. No one could buy all those hit/cool/favorite songs, although Lord we all tried. But gas was $.29 to $.39 a gallon. Five bucks would fill up my Sqauareback back then. Now? What, $40-50 to fill up, if it isn't an SUV? No, things are much more expensive over all. Think Weimar Germany and not The Same As It Ever Was.

My mom and her siblings grew up on the family farm because her dad was the son who stayed home. My grandmother was kind of a bonus: she was raised a farm girl and a real hard worker.
The only frictions were that grandfather had to pay out equally to his siblings when he inherited the farm, despite putting the most into it. And Grandma told her in-laws that the kids (Mom etc) were going to eat at the table during mealtimes, not make due with whatever was left when the adults and hired hands finished.
And I'm rambling because I'm tired, but I think we're headed back to those days of multiple generations living together.

You're pointing out the same thing we were, though, from the other side of the equation. Nobody's going to work for minimum wage if minimum wage isn't keeping up with inflation. 10x the cost of gas (30+ cents to 3+ dollars) means 10x the wages ($2.30/hr to $20/hr, not to $7.25/hr.)
And that worsens the inflation spiral, as well. Just like fuel costs add to the cost of everything, labor costs add to the cost of everything, too.
If you want an affluent society, you need "stuff" to be inexpensive relative to wages. Energy most of all. Just raising wages to $5000/hr or $5 trillion/hr can't do it.
There's probably something here about how "minimum wage jobs" 30+ years ago were something high-school kids did part-time, and now they're supposed to support independent adults full-time.....

It wasn't the greatest existence --ramen & koolaid were basics-- but since I w*rked in a full-service restaurant, didn't lack for "real" food (except on my days off, LOL)
Tips? No, I was washing dishes & bussing tables back then... no tip sharing. Sometimes the waitstaff would tip me, if a busy shift and we all busted our butts.

A lot of meds one can get 90 day scripts. Sometimes their accounting is not our accounting. With a valid prescription Canada is an alternative. More and more with clinics connected to hospitals to insurance providers you have to go outside the loop and change docs and forget insurance. It's probably not to be found but Glen Beck, while on FOX, did a whole number on this on what happens when the supply chain fails.

As for the Dovonex, it's off-patent now but generic is still pricey w/o ins. (or with ZeroCare plan) so I deal with the psoriasis. It's ugly and itchy, but not life-threatening. Everything OTC here *stinks* of coal-tar and, well, does nothing but waste money. I have a few quarts of 20% coal-tar liquid, Rx, from when I tried something cheaper thru Dr... it stinks, it stings and it stains.
Not interested in the current "biologic" shit they keep pushing on teevee. Cures everything from psoriasis to IBS ya know. Just pray you don't get TB or pneumonia due to weakened immune system...

Yeah, my mom made Martha Stewart look like a piker. She was amazing with arts and crafts, a real artist. The things she made from ceramics to tree ornaments to christmas decorations were off the chart. She could make anything. She could pilot a sewing machine like a blue angel with an F-18. If something needed to be made of wood she had my father make it, and then she would take over and do her thing with the finishing. real custom type stuff. Christmas was also her favorite time of the year. After she died the light just went out in my father. He never decorated again.

Well the thing that sucked was they had moved to a nicer house down the shore area. Well, bigger anyway. It needed a complete remodel, so we did the whole place. Kinda what I'm going through now, because the common thread is we're retarded and upgraded as we got older instead of downsizing like normal people. My brother went through it, Dad did it, now I'm doing it. Anyway, my father did the kitchen and the 2 baths, I was there, and my brother was there too. We did an addition on the back, and one on the front to make a nice entrance foyer. It was a lot of work. We did it in stages, and it took 3 years. The frigging paint was barely dry and mom got sick. After all that she didn't even get to enjoy it. I think thats what really took the wind out of my father's sail. It was all for nothing.

Mom wanted to move also, but downsize, and they had house-hunted until finding a terrific place not too far away.
Good thing they had an 'escape clause' in their bid (which was accepted) as Mom went in for --what turned out to be-- her final hospitalization not long afterward.

Dad trashed/ gave away/ did ??? with a bunch of stuff that some of us kids would love to have had... never said a word to us or asked if we wanted... some things even that he *knew* we wanted... some things even that were OURS, stored (with permission!) at their house... Gone.
But it's all just stuff. Would rather have my parents back and be able to celebrate Christmas with them.
