The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The United States is a nation of laws: badly written and randomly enforced. Frank Zappa

Quote II

“The fact is, Musk may be the last man standing between real freedom of speech and the suffocating block of this censorship industrial complex, which is made up of government, media, and tech forces,”

“He realizes that advertisers have no spine and can be easily cowed by special interest groups in cahoots with political allies.

“If you don’t believe me, I’ve got two words for you: Tucker Carlson.” Greg Gutfeld

Quote III

There seems to be a kind of apathy with a lot of retailers where they sort of like let it happen or look the other way or that's a cost of doing business. We disagree with that approach. We are going after anyone that takes something from us." Michael Sullivan, is the operations manager at Roger’s Garden Nursery, Newport Beach, California

Quote V

"I am really upset with the way this lady has acted and I would hate for this to happen to any other salon. Our stylists are self-employed and when someone receives a service from them they deserve to be paid for it. Incidents like this have a big impact on small independent businesses like ours." James Clarke, owner of No 23 Hair and Beauty Studio

Quote IV

"The RNC’s mission is to win elections. It is not their mission to reduce competition and restrict fresh ideas by ‘narrowing the field’ months before the Iowa caucuses or the first in the nation New Hampshire primary. These arbitrary criteria ensure advantages for candidates from major media markets on the coasts versus America’s Heartland. None of their debate criteria relate to the qualifications related to actually doing the job of the president. This effort to nationalize the primary system is unhealthy for the future of the party, especially for a party that proclaims to value leadership from outside of Washington." ND Gov. Doug Burgum (R)

"They" say every vote counts. I guess they are right once in awhile.

Washington city council candidate who didn't vote loses by one ballot

Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A Washington man who thought it would be "kind of narcissistic" to vote for himself ended up losing a city council position by one vote.

Damion Green ran for Rainier City Council, but he said he didn't cast a ballot in the Nov. 7 election.

If you wouldn't vote for yourself, why would anyone else?

Our society has created soft, squishy snowflakes.

Nearly half of Americans age 18 to 29 are living with their parents
The trend to move back in with mom and dad is pushing up discretionary spending

When young adults free up their budgets from daily necessities, they have more income that can be spent on discretionary items like travel, entertainment, and luxury goods.

“We think the structural change in demographics might have been overlooked,” Morgan Stanley’s Edouard Aubin and a team of analysts wrote in a note on Dec. 9. “One of the key demographic trends in the US (and the broader Western market) has been the rising number of young adults living with their parents, driven by financial concerns (i.e. rental costs) as well as other sociological factors (e.g. higher penetration of higher education and increasingly delayed age for marriage).

I use to have feelings for taxpayers being stuck with the tab for their elected officials ineptness. Not anymore. Make them pay. And make them pay hard. Make them hurt.

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL: An 11-year-old girl was assigned to share a bed with a male student who identifies as a transgender girl while on a cross-country school trip, according to a demand letter sent Monday. That girl’s parents are now calling upon the public school system to provide answers and clarification of its policies related to children who identify as transgender.

Represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, Joe and Serena Wailes are calling on the Colorado-based Jefferson County School Board and Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Tracy Dorland to clarify “whether JCPS will continue this practice of intentionally withholding information about rooming accommodations from parents like the Waileses, who object to their children rooming with a student of the opposite sex, regardless of the other student’s gender identity.”

“This practice renders it impossible for these parents to make informed decisions about their children’s privacy, upbringing, and participation in school-sponsored programs,” reads the demand letter, which was exclusively provided to The Daily Signal. “Additionally, our clients request information related to JB R-1 and the ability to opt out of this rooming policy for all future school trips.”

True, the following may be considered filler material. But, it is a bit interesting, 'My Quest to Drink a Nobu Martini in My Pajamas If Robert De Niro can do it, why can’t I?

In November, Robert De Niro’s former assistant Graham Chase Robinson successfully sued the actor’s company for, among other things, De Niro asking her to scratch his back and rescue his dogs from an incipient fire, contacting her while she was at her grandma’s funeral, and calling her a bitch. De Niro’s company unsuccessfully countersued Robinson, arguing that she used the company card for personal Uber rides and watched too much Netflix on the clock. In an attempt to prove that the company-card argument held no water, Robinson’s lawyer pointed out that De Niro once asked Robinson to Uber him a “particular martini” from Nobu, the restaurant he co-owns, at 11 o’clock at night.

Robinson had been dining at Nobu for her friend’s daughter’s 21st birthday when “Bob” called. “And I told him I was at Nobu, and he asked that I bring a martini to him after I finished dinner … He asked me to bring him a martini on my way home.” Robinson did and “met him downstairs,” ostensibly at one of his Manhattan residences, where “he was in his pajamas and slippers, and I handed him the martini in a plastic container.”

I have three nephews. I have three daughters. Yes, "periods are not a gender issue".

The world’s first tampons for men have been criticised by feminist campaigners as an “insult” to women who suffer period discrimination.

Vuokkoset, a Finnish company released the controversial new sanitary product earlier this month to coincide with Transgender Awareness week and International Men’s day.

The product comes in a dark blue box which bears the words “For Men” on one side, but then extends this phrase around the packaging so it eventually reads “For Menstruation”.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Sidewalk Cafe Emporium

Experimental Rock Star, Frank Zappa, Dies
On this day in music, December 4, 1993, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Frank Zappa lost his battle with cancer. Bearing a musical virtuosity that rivaled few others, Zappa’s pioneering work was vast and varied – from his free-form improvisations inspired by avant-garde jazz, to sound experiments with non-traditional instruments, to his biting lyrical satire of modern society. Although Zappa divided critics and fans while he was alive, his influence on modern rock and experimental music is undeniable. Following his death, he was honored with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. via thisdayimusic.com

Gunmen fire at police while holding takeaway driver hostage for delivering ‘cold kebab

This is the moment two men fired shots at police while holding a takeaway driver hostage for 14 hours after delivering a ‘cold kebab’.

Bedfordshire Police are seen surrounding the block of flats where the two shooters, Paul Burton, 45, and Nathan Turner, 37, barricaded themselves in along with the victim.

The stand off lasted for 14 hours at Bury Court on the outskirts of Bedford in November 2022.

During this time Burton began live streaming on Facebook, complaining to police his takeaway driver ‘failed at his job’ as his kebab arrived late and was missing the salad.

The right needs to start yelling across the board from the top of their lungs that there needs to be an end to Qualified Immunity, Absolute Immunity, and Sovereign Immunity in this nation. The democrats are using the doctrines to enact a police state by Constitutional Amendment.

85 Nearly half of Americans age 18 to 29 are living with their parents
The trend to move back in with mom and dad is pushing up discretionary spending

When young adults free up their budgets from daily necessities, they have more income that can be spent on discretionary items like travel, entertainment, and luxury goods.

It's the parent's fault as much as the kid's. When my girls graduated from college, they were allowed to spend a year back at home saving money on rent so they could save up for grad school or a house, but they had to carry their share of the chores, and it was understood that if you were blowing lots of money on frivolities, the deal ended.

You aren't doing your "kids" any favors by allowing them to defer adulthood.

And there was a wife who I didn't really know but we were friendly, and her father, and her boy who I adopted and loved. And it seemed like I was there for years; but then I started hearing a call saying I had to go soon, even though I didn't want to. And suddenly I realized that while they were still beautiful, all the trees and vegetation were a scarlet red, and the sky was an emerald green, and I knew that once I left, I wouldn't be able to get back. Yes and no. Inflation is a bastard. Rent is out of sight today. Everywhere. Income taxes are higher than in The Days of Yore.

I look at it this way. You know those music reaction videos? Well, try explaining that you didn't just buy a song back then, usually you had to buy an album. When the minimum wage was around $2.30/hour, an album was around $4-5, one to two hours of labor before taxes. No one could buy all those hit/cool/favorite songs, although Lord we all tried. But gas was $.29 to $.39 a gallon. Five bucks would fill up my Sqauareback back then. Now? What, $40-50 to fill up, if it isn't an SUV? No, things are much more expensive over all. Think Weimar Germany and not The Same As It Ever Was.

My mom and her siblings grew up on the family farm because her dad was the son who stayed home. My grandmother was kind of a bonus: she was raised a farm girl and a real hard worker.

The only frictions were that grandfather had to pay out equally to his siblings when he inherited the farm, despite putting the most into it. And Grandma told her in-laws that the kids (Mom etc) were going to eat at the table during mealtimes, not make due with whatever was left when the adults and hired hands finished.

And I'm rambling because I'm tired, but I think we're headed back to those days of multiple generations living together.

I suppose that will end soon. The squalor house next door, which has the same square footage as mine, went for $40 more than expected.

RickZ said "minimum wage," so the de jure wage is what I compared to. The de facto minimum wage probably is the $15 the democrats were Fighting For a while back.

You're pointing out the same thing we were, though, from the other side of the equation. Nobody's going to work for minimum wage if minimum wage isn't keeping up with inflation. 10x the cost of gas (30+ cents to 3+ dollars) means 10x the wages ($2.30/hr to $20/hr, not to $7.25/hr.)

And that worsens the inflation spiral, as well. Just like fuel costs add to the cost of everything, labor costs add to the cost of everything, too.

If you want an affluent society, you need "stuff" to be inexpensive relative to wages. Energy most of all. Just raising wages to $5000/hr or $5 trillion/hr can't do it.

There's probably something here about how "minimum wage jobs" 30+ years ago were something high-school kids did part-time, and now they're supposed to support independent adults full-time.....

Posted by: mikeski at December 05, 2023 12:45 AM (DgGvY)

395 The reason they don't/won't work for minimum wage is the same reason they are moving back in with mom & dad - somebody else will take care of them.

With minimum wage if they don't take it and have nothing they go on the dole and with EBTs and allotments they come out better than working. That's a problem.

A lot of meds one can get 90 day scripts. Sometimes their accounting is not our accounting. With a valid prescription Canada is an alternative. More and more with clinics connected to hospitals to insurance providers you have to go outside the loop and change docs and forget insurance. Yeah, my mom made Martha Stewart look like a piker. She was amazing with arts and crafts, a real artist. The things she made from ceramics to tree ornaments to christmas decorations were off the chart. She could make anything. She could pilot a sewing machine like a blue angel with an F-18. If something needed to be made of wood she had my father make it, and then she would take over and do her thing with the finishing. real custom type stuff. Christmas was also her favorite time of the year. After she died the light just went out in my father. He never decorated again.

Well the thing that sucked was they had moved to a nicer house down the shore area. Well, bigger anyway. It needed a complete remodel, so we did the whole place. Kinda what I'm going through now, because the common thread is we're retarded and upgraded as we got older instead of downsizing like normal people. My brother went through it, Dad did it, now I'm doing it. Anyway, my father did the kitchen and the 2 baths, I was there, and my brother was there too. We did an addition on the back, and one on the front to make a nice entrance foyer. It was a lot of work. We did it in stages, and it took 3 years. The frigging paint was barely dry and mom got sick. After all that she didn't even get to enjoy it. I think thats what really took the wind out of my father's sail. It was all for nothing.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at December 05, 2023 03:41 AM (VwHCD)

429 Bers, oh that is heartbreaking!

Mom wanted to move also, but downsize, and they had house-hunted until finding a terrific place not too far away.

Good thing they had an 'escape clause' in their bid (which was accepted) as Mom went in for --what turned out to be-- her final hospitalization not long afterward.

Bathroom remodels: ka-ching, ka-ching
Kitchen remodel: ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching

Not sure how many I've done in my life but if I had to pay for contractors it would have been half as many. What a time sink.

431 On the other hand, it's a shame Mom & Dad *didn't* move, and downsize, and shed a bunch of stuff... which I must to through now.

Dad trashed/ gave away/ did ??? with a bunch of stuff that some of us kids would love to have had... never said a word to us or asked if we wanted... some things even that he *knew* we wanted... some things even that were OURS, stored (with permission!) at their house... Gone.

But it's all just stuff. Would rather have my parents back and be able to celebrate Christmas with them.

432 Still 'finding out' what all that asshole stole-- the crackhead that broke in last winter...

Mostly, was stuff I had taken to Dad's (after he'd passed) when I sold my former home. Tools, mainly. Some expensive clothing and collectibles. Dad's antique model trains and model airplane accessories...

433 JQ -

Take care.

At least you got started. The hubby and I have paperwork and cleaning out to do and neither of us can face it.

Ah well. Hitting the hay.

434 Best of luck, Adriane! It truly sucks, but you can do it.

We just need to carry on, right?

Take care

435 But still... I'd kinda like it if he did something bad. I worry that these kids have *no* rebellion in them.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 04, 2023 11:51 PM (0FoWg)

I was systematically terrorized and brainwashed to have no rebellion in me, just obedience. If my parents didn't get me then God would. Horrible way to grow up that causes lifelong damage.

437 I would love to downsize but the other half in my house disagrees. She loves cleaning all those unused rooms I guess.
