Politico cried about this a couple of weeks ago:'It Feels Like the New McCarthyism': How the Israel-Hamas War Is Redefining the Limits of Free SpeechDid they talk to a single conservative before writing this? Apparently not. We just don't count. We're meant to be speech-patrolled, they're meant to be free. The New York Times, meanwhile, claimed that first it was college campuses, and only now are corporations firing people over wrongspeech. Only now, New York Times? Really? The New York Times itself has fired people and forced people to resign over wrongspeech! And now they're pretending this is a "new" feature of corporate life? Again, what they mean is: The new thing is that the wrong people are being cancelled.

Greg Lukianoff, author of The Coddling of the American Mind, is amused by campus speech police suddenly decrying "the New McCarthyism" now that they're being canceled for genocidal antisemtism. He writes that there's nothing "new" about this "new McCarthyism," and they should know that, as they've been practicing McCarthyism for a decade:

I know of a girl who was fired from her job because she tweeted out some anti-zionist tweets when she was in college. Like 5-6 years ago.
Some anonymous online group scoured her tweets, put her face on their webpage, and emailed her company saying she was an antisemite. And now she's unemployed.
The first thing that pops up when you google her name is that blacklisting webpage with her name, picture, college she went to, work history, etc.
She's first generation in the US from Pakistan. First person in her family to go to college. Went to a good school, got great grades. Got a solid job at a mid-sized company, worked her ass off there for years. Made decent money. I'm sure this incident will go a long way in dissuading her of her belief that Jews control the world.

It only took them one hundred fvcking years to figure out the obvious. Almost 90,000 former Scouts have filed suit against them for abuse of a sexual nature. As painful as the memory is, I'm part of the suit. No organization deserves to survive bankruptcy that is that fvcking stupid for that long.

I think there's a fair bit of difference between an individual hiring/firing decision and an attempt to impose a society-wide blacklist on a person. It doesn't really make sense to police the ethnically biased hiring decisions of a lot of local businesses.
Making a person unemployable is close to outlaw status and should theoretically be a response to severe crimes.
But we're basically in a feud here, so reasonable isn't relevant.

As a loyal Scouter, though, I worry about BSA's long term future because they continue to install Titans of Industry as their CEO's (2 year terms). Even if those guys are conservative in general, they pretty much have to align BSA with similar policies that would be required at their own companies, or face backlash. So that means more woke nonsense.

Tulsa Hillcrest hospital chain hit by ransomware virus. Bazillion dollars demanded. (I might have mis-read the amount.)
All the usual computer stuff is being done the old-fashioned way, on paper. Work slowed down, but continuing.
They were concerned they might have to cancel surgeries. Fortunately, they were able to proceed with my colonoscopy this morning. The doc finally found Something that likely caused my bowels to go haywire in October. Will know more exactly what when the lab does their thing.
God bless those hard-working, dedicated professionals, especially my surgeon. And the anesthesiologists who let me take a nice nap through it all.
Our systems sure need to be hardened against hacking. We need superior computer cops. Also, just IMHO, I think those hackers who disrupt vital services should be hanged. Eviscerated. Drawn & quartered. And then forced to suffer the comfy chair.* But that's just IMHO.

There were two sides because the dying king wanted to cut out his sisters from the line of secession. Those closer to the legal line of secession tend to resent that. Yes, part of that was the differences in Religion, while another part feared Spanish influence taking root in England, since Spain was a dominant power. Mostly it was about the factions supporting various heirs wanting not to lose their power and wealth to some upstart faction.

The history of Great Britain is very different from the continent, mostly because they had a body of water between them, and the rest of the continent.
All the squabbles, internal and external, for the various peoples of Europe were only ever somewhat related to religion.
England however, as soon as the split happened, essentially EVERYTHING was about religion for a good century or so.

This is very much false. Germany and the Dutch areas were battlegrounds for a century over Catholic vs Protestant. France had various massacres of the Protestant minority in the same period.
There was a century where ALL regions in Europe with a significant mix was crushing out the minority, or warring with some neighbor to do the same thing. The period is called the Wars of Religion for goodness sake.

But your local VFW Post doesn't have millions of dollars so the lawyers went where the money is and the B.S.A. figured the damage to their reputation that years of litigation would do was worse than just paying people off. The insurance companies were furious that all the claims weren't going to be checked out (nothing stopped anyone from making false claims), BTW. Also, most of those claims were decades old, few were recent.

So now the Catholic church doesn't want to sponsor units because "most of the time the leader isn't even in our parish". To which I answer "WHY NOT? You're a Christian Church that says people should follow Christ and engage in mission and sacrifice and lead and you can't find a few adults to help parents run a Troop?
