Residents of rural areas aren't happy with you here either. Go away Americans ditched big cities during the pandemic. Now many are regretting it. Susan, a 30-something artist, lived in New York City when the pandemic struck. Eager to flee the claustrophobia of a too-small apartment, she and her husband decamped upstate to stay with friends in an up-and-coming town in the Catskills (population: 1,000) where they could hike local trails and fish for trout. Susan, who asked that her real name not be used to avoid social repercussions, had lived in New York City for over a decade, but her husband had grown tired of the hustle and bustle of the city. The pair had talked about moving to a smaller town someday — the pandemic just shortened their timeline. Thanks to the influx of city folk desperate for personal space, rents in trendy upstate communities had become exorbitant overnight, so it made more financial sense to simply buy. The couple put in an offer on a home near their friends in April 2020 and moved in by summer's end. But once they had settled in, the reality of the situation hit Susan. Cut off from her social and creative communities, she felt unmoored and alienated. Maybe she wasn't the sort of person who enjoyed trout fishing. Maybe the house in the country wasn't right for her, after all — or at least, not yet. "I liked the idea in theory, but I wasn't ready for it," Susan told me. Is it just normal business resizing? Or is there serious issues going on that the MSM won't report? Doom anyone? Between Nov. 12 and 18, several banks filed to close branch locations, with PNC Bank with the most filings, according to data from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank filed for 19 branch closures—five in Pennsylvania, four in Illinois, three in Texas, two each in Alabama and New Jersey, and one each in Indiana, Ohio, and Florida. JPMorgan Chase followed closely with 18 filings—three in Ohio, two each in Connecticut and South Carolina, and one each in 11 states, including New York, Illinois, Florida, and Massachusetts. Citizens Bank came in third with eight branch closure filings—six in New York, and one each in Massachusetts and Delaware. Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank filed for seven closures—three in Tennessee and one each in Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Illinois. Bank of America made five filings—two in New York and one each in Texas, Massachusetts, and California. Citibank filed for two branch closures, and Sterling, Bremer, First National Bank of Hughes Springs, Windsor FS&LA, and Aroostook County FS&LA made one filing each. Altogether, banks filed to shut down 64 branches. Where the hell did the last 20 years go? Yep. The risk of being caught for cyber crime is low...but the punishment is even lower. Steal $1000 while causing $100M of pain for society and we punish you, lightly, for the $1000 and ignore the $100M of damage you caused. Or the analogy I like to use...I have a door with a lock on it to my house. But...if someone really wants to break in they could. Instead of trying to turn my house into a literal fortress the threat of arrest...or me shooting a robber...keeps me safe. On the internet though we expect every website, every forum, every email provider can and should be a perfect fortress when we KNOW that will never work. So...the answer? Hang people like you say. And cut whole damn countries off the internet (looking at you India and China). Posted by: 18-1 at November 28, 2023 10:30 PM (XqcwY) 111

My twins tried to take a mouse for show and tell when they were in kindergarten. The teacher's rule was that the show and tell item had to start with the letter of the week. That week, the letter was "m". My little white cat had caught a mouse, and chomped down everything but the head. The twins got one of the plastic sandwich bags, picked up the mouse head, turned the bag inside out so nobody actually touched the mouse. Thank heavens, I caught the mouse head before they got it out the door. The teacher nearly fainted when I old her about it the next parent-teacher conference. However, she, dear lady that she was, had already suffered through #1 and #2 sons, so she really wasn't as distressed as if the twins were the first Sabins she had dealt with.

In England, we stayed at Beechen Cliff above Widcombe and would walk down the hill streets to get into Bath (or up to Bear Flat). Very nice three-level row house, but the washing machine sucked just awful, all drying was on racks, and it is damp there even on sunny days. We knew there would be commercial laundry needed at some point in our stay, so one morning two couples packed the dirties into suitcases and schlepped to the laundromat in the village. Wanting to have drinks, of course, whilst the washing and drying went on, wife inquired of the two ladies there how long the cycle took. Turned out, they did not work there, just in to do the weekly, and they told her not to give it a thought dearie, they'd just transfer the loads and fold it when done. Well, wife goes, let me pay you for doing all the work of a laundrywoman! Nay, nay, we've nowt else to do. So we went out for a bit, and she took them some scones. Nobody in England has a clothes dryer, and the home washers are tiny and take forever. It's at the laundry that you learn the bewilderment of Brit coinage. They have jokes about it.

Thing about Alice Cooper is that his act..is an act. Much like how Rodney Dangerfield was nothing like Rodney Dangerfield in real life. But the woman who complained is correct, the person should not have folded her laundry. He should have taken it out of the dryer and dropped it on the floor. There is no excuse for leaving your clothes in a communal dryer and leaving the laundromat. It's been years since I've had to use a laundromat. And I don't miss it.
Posted by: nerdygirl at November 28, 2023 10:25 PM (0Htd1) I think it depends in part upon how many machines are available. Apartment and motel laundromats often have a scant few machines, and it behooves the users to empty the machines promptly once the cycle is done. Big commercial laundromats often have more machines than customers, so tying one up for a period of time really causes no other person any hardship. There IS NO "Palestine". It's Gaza, and it's populated mostly by Jordanians, and then some Syrians. All who were abandoned there by their "nations" in 1948, being assured that they'd get to return to Israel, as soon as Israel was swept into the Mediterranean. There is no Palestinian LANGUAGE. They speak Arabic. There is no Palestinian HISTORY, you'd have to study Jordan and Syria. There is no unique Palestinian CULTURE, other than the thuggish brutality they've embraced since 1948. And, it's not "Fuck Gaza". It's RAZE Gaza. And purge it's underground. Grade it and make it into a giant hog farm. That's about the only way to keep the muzzies out, from now on. I always carefully timed my laundromat visits. And when I lived in an apartment with communal washers/dryers, I likewise did the same, because I hated the people I would run into in the washing room.

Banks closing their branches doesn't surprise me given this day and age.
My credit union is shutting branches. The manpower and services just aren't needed anymore so such physical downsizing makes sense. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at November 29, 2023 07:05 AM (8sMut) 524
Long time Lurker, but I just have to comment on the bees. I’ve been keeping bees since I was 11, ( now 70). Never expected to see a post on AoS about bees! My opinion……honey bees are being over bred (genetisized) and it has ruined the honeybee stock. They can’t overwinter , mites are a plague and the bees are doing some strange things. Honestly, I give them a 50/50 chance. Hard times in the Bee World

Every comment in this post that talks about the laundry story ignores the fact that there were many open dryers and only one dryer was used. Posted by: comradearthur at November 29, 2023 09:49 AM (bUnPj) Processing 0.09, elapsed 0.0991 seconds. |
