The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I have frozen my penis. For real. Damn, I had to lie in there [the athletes’ tent] for 10 minutes to warm it up. It hurts so damn much. It’s terrible.” Swedish cross-country skier Calle Halfvarsson

Quote II

“Ultimately, I don’t believe that kids should work. “I think kids should play and go to school.” Actress Natalie Portman

Quote III

“Conservatives are often accused of launching a culture war or focusing or fixating on cultural issues. But here is a perfect example of how that’s not what’s happening,” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI)

Quote IV

“I think there’s more donors just fully committed to their candidate right now, saying I am all in, and once the nominee is set, I’ll be there. That’s what I hear more than anything. And they’re really solidly in the camps of their candidate, which is normal.” Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel

It wasn't that long ago when The Fabulous and I had to do laundry at the laundromat. What pissed me off when the place was busy and people left the building with their laundry being washed and/or dried. I have no sympathy for the "woman" who felt violated.

Woman Was “So Uncomfortable” After Finding Out a Stranger Folded Her Clothes
A woman said she felt violated and uncomfortable after someone took her clothes out of a dryer in her apartment building and folded them.

I thought you did the background check!

Convicted prostitute, current escort removed from Godley ISD groups, including council overseeing Sex-Ed

GODLEY, Texas - A woman tasked with helping decide sexual education curriculum in Godley ISD has been removed from multiple positions within the district because she's a convicted prostitute.

A FOX 4 investigation also found she is advertising herself online as an escort.

The discovery raises concerns about background checks in the district and across the state.

Just the article I needed to see before our upcoming trip. Wonderful! The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

How to find hidden cameras in your Airbnb – or anywhere

Here’s something you may not know about Airbnb: hosts are allowed to film their guests.

That’s correct. If you stay in an Airbnb you could be on camera – but if you are, you should know about it.

In its rules, the company is okay with ‘disclosed devices monitoring only public spaces and common spaces’ – that could include living rooms, hallways and kitchens.

All I have to say is, "Nothing to see here. Move along. Unless you like pudgy old white guys."

Well this story throws a wrench into the buy eating desires of the WEF and other Muckity-Mucks. Honeybees Suffer Unnecessarily in Human-Made Hives, Study Finds

Honeybees in man-made hives may have been suffering the cold unnecessarily for over a century because commercial hive designs are based on erroneous science, my new research shows.

For 119 years, a belief that the way honeybees cluster together gives them a kind of evolutionary insulation has been fundamental for beekeeping practice, hive design and honeybee study.

Residents of rural areas aren't happy with you here either. Go away Damn Yankees city slickers.

Americans ditched big cities during the pandemic. Now many are regretting it.

Susan, a 30-something artist, lived in New York City when the pandemic struck. Eager to flee the claustrophobia of a too-small apartment, she and her husband decamped upstate to stay with friends in an up-and-coming town in the Catskills (population: 1,000) where they could hike local trails and fish for trout.

Susan, who asked that her real name not be used to avoid social repercussions, had lived in New York City for over a decade, but her husband had grown tired of the hustle and bustle of the city. The pair had talked about moving to a smaller town someday — the pandemic just shortened their timeline. Thanks to the influx of city folk desperate for personal space, rents in trendy upstate communities had become exorbitant overnight, so it made more financial sense to simply buy.

The couple put in an offer on a home near their friends in April 2020 and moved in by summer's end. But once they had settled in, the reality of the situation hit Susan. Cut off from her social and creative communities, she felt unmoored and alienated. Maybe she wasn't the sort of person who enjoyed trout fishing. Maybe the house in the country wasn't right for her, after all — or at least, not yet.

"I liked the idea in theory, but I wasn't ready for it," Susan told me.

There was an incident. That means we have tonight's Genius Award Winner.

A passenger on a Southwest Airlines flight was arrested on Sunday night in New Orleans after allegedly escaping the plane through the emergency hatch and running away on the tarmac at the Louis Armstrong Airport.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office (JPSO), who arrested the man, the Southwest Airlines plane was still parked at the terminal and had not yet initiated the run up for take-off when the passenger made their dangerous escape.

Tulsa Hillcrest hospital chain hit by ransomware virus. Bazillion dollars demanded. (I might have mis-read the amount.)

All the usual computer stuff is being done the old-fashioned way, on paper. Work slowed down, but continuing.

They were concerned they might have to cancel surgeries. Fortunately, they were able to proceed with my colonoscopy this morning. The doc finally found Something that likely caused my bowels to go haywire in October. Will know more exactly what when the lab does their thing.

God bless those hard-working, dedicated professionals, especially my surgeon. And the anesthesiologists who let me take a nice nap through it all.

Our systems sure need to be hardened against hacking. We need superior computer cops. Also, just IMHO, I think those hackers who disrupt vital services should be hanged. Eviscerated. Drawn & quartered. And then forced to suffer the comfy chair.* But that's just IMHO.

Yep. The risk of being caught for cyber crime is low...but the punishment is even lower.

Steal $1000 while causing $100M of pain for society and we punish you, lightly, for the $1000 and ignore the $100M of damage you caused.

Or the analogy I like to use...I have a door with a lock on it to my house. But...if someone really wants to break in they could. Instead of trying to turn my house into a literal fortress the threat of arrest...or me shooting a robber...keeps me safe.

On the internet though we expect every website, every forum, every email provider can and should be a perfect fortress when we KNOW that will never work. So...the answer? Hang people like you say. And cut whole damn countries off the internet (looking at you India and China).

That week, the letter was "m". My little white cat had caught a mouse, and chomped down everything but the head. The twins got one of the plastic sandwich bags, picked up the mouse head, turned the bag inside out so nobody actually touched the mouse. Thank heavens, I caught the mouse head before they got it out the door. The teacher nearly fainted when I old her about it the next parent-teacher conference. However, she, dear lady that she was, had already suffered through #1 and #2 sons, so she really wasn't as distressed as if the twins were the first Sabins she had dealt with.

242 In England, we stayed at Beechen Cliff above Widcombe and would walk down the hill streets to get into Bath (or up to Bear Flat). Very nice three-level row house, but the washing machine sucked just awful, all drying was on racks, and it is damp there even on sunny days. We knew there would be commercial laundry needed at some point in our stay, so one morning two couples packed the dirties into suitcases and schlepped to the laundromat in the village. Wanting to have drinks, of course, whilst the washing and drying went on, wife inquired of the two ladies there how long the cycle took. Turned out, they did not work there, just in to do the weekly, and they told her not to give it a thought dearie, they'd just transfer the loads and fold it when done. Well, wife goes, let me pay you for doing all the work of a laundrywoman! Nay, nay, we've nowt else to do. So we went out for a bit, and she took them some scones. Nobody in England has a clothes dryer, and the home washers are tiny and take forever. It's at the laundry that you learn the bewilderment of Brit coinage. They have jokes about it.

Posted by: nerdygirl at November 28, 2023 10:25 PM (0Htd1)

I think it depends in part upon how many machines are available. Apartment and motel laundromats often have a scant few machines, and it behooves the users to empty the machines promptly once the cycle is done. Big commercial laundromats often have more machines than customers, so tying one up for a period of time really causes no other person any hardship.

It could be because of a catastrophic collapse in demand due to a ruined economy.

Or hopefully it's because the refineries slightly overshot production and there is a shortage of storage for gasoline. This happened back during the Trump years, and the price of gas took an abrupt drop as the system had to make room for the incoming product.

There IS NO "Palestine". It's Gaza, and it's populated mostly by Jordanians, and then some Syrians. All who were abandoned there by their "nations" in 1948, being assured that they'd get to return to Israel, as soon as Israel was swept into the Mediterranean.

There is no Palestinian LANGUAGE. They speak Arabic. There is no Palestinian HISTORY, you'd have to study Jordan and Syria. There is no unique Palestinian CULTURE, other than the thuggish brutality they've embraced since 1948.

And, it's not "Fuck Gaza". It's RAZE Gaza. And purge it's underground. Grade it and make it into a giant hog farm. That's about the only way to keep the muzzies out, from now on.

Rose, the other outside girl, has started to come inside the front door for a very short while when my daughter leaves for work. She's obviously fixed as no kittens in a couple of years that she's been around and is so friendly that I figured from the beginning she had to have been someone else's inside cat. I hope she was abandoned and didn't just decide to change abode. We had a black male that did that. Belonged to someone about 3 houses down from us and across the road. Spent more and more time with us until he hardly ever left. He even slept on the bed at night. The owner worked at Kmart and told my wife, at the till, about this black cat she had that spent all its time with neighbors. My Wife didn't say anything at the time.

509 Haha, Ciampino...

I 'stole' current Cat (unintentionally!) from a neighbor. He was *always* in our yard for over a year. We're at the edge of city limits and Jerk People dump animals out here all the time. Worst right after Holidays. He was scruffy looking and I figured he'd been dumped. Pretty wary of us at first, too.

Anyway, Cat decided he likes it here better, because neighbors got a yappy dog... I found out where he came from (finally) and it's been decided that he's "ours" now. Ended well!

524 Long time Lurker, but I just have to comment on the bees. I’ve been keeping bees since I was 11, ( now 70). Never expected to see a post on AoS about bees! My opinion……honey bees are being over bred (genetisized) and it has ruined the honeybee stock. They can’t overwinter , mites are a plague and the bees are doing some strange things. Honestly, I give them a 50/50 chance. Hard times in the Bee World

Every comment in this post that talks about the laundry story ignores the fact that there were many open dryers and only one dryer was used.
