THE MORNING RANT: Garbage Inflation Data – The Government’s Official Inflation Rate Includes a Laughable 34% Reduction in Consumer Health Insurance Costs Over the Past 12 Months

Have you heard the great news about inflation falling? The Biden administration is heavily promoting the storyline that inflation is low again, and trying to insinuate that the falling inflation rate means that prices are actually decreasing. The obedient regime media is playing along. Here is just one example last week from CNN.

“Consumer price inflation fell to 3.2% last month, in welcome news for US households and the Fed” [CNN – 11/14/2023]

Anyone buying groceries, utilities, insurance, etc. knows that prices are continuing to rise dramatically. So how does the government come up with its fraudulent inflation rate?

Here is just one outrageous example. There are undoubtedly many more like this.

Per the October 2023 inflation figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of premiums paid for Health Care Insurance decreased by 34% from October 2022 to October 2023. Fraudulent inputs with negative values are certainly one way to artificially deflate the actual inflation rate.

There is going to be a little bit of math in this post, but it’s important that I show my work.

First, immediately below is a chart from page 15 (of 38 ) of the BLS’ October Consumer Price Index ("CPI") report, which can be found at this link.

CPI Including Healthcare Retained Earnings - Highlighted.JPG

You’ll notice that it shows that the cost of Health Insurance is down 34% from October 2022 to October 2023. That is obviously preposterous.

On page 5 of this same report, we are given guidance about this change. Feel free to read “Changes to Health Insurance Methodology” (pasted just below), or don’t bother, but in summary:

• The BLS has decided to “smooth” the methodology of calculating changes in the cost of Health Care premiums used in their inflation reports effective with this October 2023 report. If I might add, there was apparently a lot of negative “smoothing.”

• This also reveals that the BLS does not even measure the actual cost of health care premiums paid to insurance companies. Instead, it is based on what the BLS refers to as “retained earnings.” (This is not the same thing as Retained Earnings in accounting.) As I’ll get to in a moment, the BLS’ “retained earnings” is a calculation with a methodology that negates the inflation impact when health care premiums and benefit payouts increase at the same rate.

BLS - Changes to Health Insurance Methodology in CPI.JPG

“Retained earnings” as defined by the BLS for calculating its impact on inflation is effectively “Health insurance premiums collected by insurance companies minus benefits paid out.”

This is akin to measuring inflation by tracking a grocery store’s gross profit per gallon of milk as prices rise, rather than tracking how much a consumer is actually paying for that gallon of milk.

A simplified example would be that Bob’s health insurance costs $10,000 per year and benefits paid out on Bob’s behalf totaled $9,000. Thus the “retained earnings” for the insurance company on Bob was $1,000.

Here is why that calculation invites distortion:

Let’s say that Bob’s benefits payout increases by $500, from $9,000 to $9,500. At the same time, his insurance premium is also increased by $500, from $10,000 to $10,500. Bob’s insurance premium just increased by 5%, but according to the BLS, there is no inflation here because the insurance company’s retained earnings remained static at $1,000.

For the BLS to be showing negative inflation for health insurance means that retained earnings (as the BLS defines the term) are declining. If so, that is not happening because consumer insurance premiums are decreasing, rather it is because the cost of benefits being paid out is increasing faster than insurance premiums are increasing, which means that insurance premiums will have to go up to maintain the margin that allows for salaries and expenses to be paid.

In other words, not only is a decrease in health insurance companies’ “retained earnings” not deflationary, but it is actually inflationary.

I had a boss once who occasionally stung employees with these simple words when doing a cursory review of their work and finding an error, “I find one mistake and wonder how many more there are.” I feel similar about the fraudulent data inputs in the BLS’ inflation reports. A 34% decrease in the cost of health insurance sticks out as obviously flawed, but how many other erroneous inputs that are less egregious are also distorting the official published inflation rate?

*****

Sorry about all that math, let’s finish with some inflation humor from online parody site, Vox.

“The Problem Isn’t Inflation. It’s Prices” [Vox – 11/14/2023]

Oh wait, apparently Vox is not a parody web site, it’s an “explainer” site, and this is a real headline. Here is an actual line from that article.

Two things are true in the United States today: The economy is good, and people hate it.

Once again, actual parody web site The Babylon Bee gets the last laugh.

"It isn't inflation, it's the prices" is a prime example of deflecting from the real issue.

Howdy, B.! We went down to my old neighborhood, which is now more of a theme park than a neighborhood, and had dinner at a (fairly) upscale restaurant in a building that I remember as a Woolworth's. Jumbo shrimp for me, their turkey dinner for Miss Linda. There was a college game T-giving parade, but we avoided that and had no trouble parking or leaving. Pretty good all around.

Yup. If I'd been drinking coffee when I read that whopper about medical costs going down, I'd have sprayed my computer. My group is reupping for health insurance, and we're looking at *only* a 7.5% increase for the same high-deductible policy. And ~15% up over two years.

88 Even other parts of the methodolgy are wrong. How do you measure a metric in the short-term when the data being given to you is based on a two-year moving average? The near-time data is being blurred out by the longer average, and this is on purpose.

So add a terrible change in metric (prices vs profits) to smoothing over two years.

And given healthcare is such a large component of the economy these days, a -34% component is not a small part of the calculation.

Then they just ex out gas and food from the inflation numbers, and do 100 other tricks (lies) like Mannix describes ... and look, No Inflation!

Hedonic pricing in another gimmick ... you will have to buy a very expensive car, BUT that car will (hedonically priced) be the same as the much cheaper gas car, because it is Much Better Quality and saves the planet.

Voila, that $50,000 car is the same price as the $25,000 car. (that's extreme, but I think that is how hedonic pricing works).

It's what happens when the cost of chemo is in the $100ks...I use a PPO so I can go out of network, and max my FSA which I know I'll completely use well before years' end. Oh, and wife needs another surgery; cancer has blocked off liver ducts, so they need to stent those ducts open...every 3 months...

151 Well, maybe I'm the only one in the U.S. getting these notices, so disregard:

My GEHA health insurance sent me a notice that my premiums were going UP, starting in Dec. by over 2%, IIRC. I've had this same health insurance for over 30 years, so I can tell when something is anomalous or not. In this case, "not."

My Long Term Care insurance (LTC) sent me a similar premium increase notice, only MORE than the GEHA premium increase.

As stated, maybe this is unique to me, but I suspect it's more likely typical.

Here is my conspiracy theory; one jury in California awarded one single former Boy Scout $19 million (iirc). The Scouts knew how many perverts they had hired or fired over the years, did the math and said 'Holy Fvck' we're gonna get completely bankrupted. The trial lawyers apparently cooked up a plan (which they're going to get 1/3rd of) to get the SoL extended in as many states as they could. NY and PA are two that I'm sure of. The Boy Scouts take a 20% bankruptcy, pay out a couple billion, and the trial lawyers get their piece of the action.

Unintended consequences is what your seeing to these celebrities, etc. As to the former Scouts, the payout is a pittance.

I'll say it again: their lies are so obvious, it's clear to even the most partisan that the government is not to be trusted. That's a first step on the road to their elimination.

The Horde is wondrous in its collective wisdom! Which gives me an idea ....

I found a doctor I like. Sometime over the last six months, he left the clinic he was at. The clinic won't give me his new information (I suspect he has a non-compete agreement) but I still want him to be my doctor. But I can't find any up-to-date information on the internet.

Is there somewhere to find current information for a doctor? Surely some entity is keeping track of who practices where.
