14 Mike Hammer, if you are here, from two threads ago, I don't remember tumbled rail cars, but I do remember the many small niches and tunnels in the sides of the rock face from people who decided to prospect before they hit the Yukon.
I remember Dead Horse Gulch, and looking down pitying the poor horses who were dragged up there from god knows where and shoved into the ravine when they couldn't make it any more.
I also had an amazing sight in a creek there on (what was then) the edge of town; in Ketchikan I'd seen salmon flooding into the creeks from the harbor, churning up the water at the entries, in Juneau I ate the best salmon I've ever had in my life, and by Skagway, I got to see the last of the cycle: the path to the little town museum crossed a tiny little branch in a ditch, no more than a couple feet wide and a few inches deep.
When walking to the museum, I saw a salmon commando-crawling north, upper body entirely out of the water, gills working like a bellows.
The museum was nice, but did not take long to tour; most notable was a ceremonial cape made out of different shades of salmon skin pieced together in patterns, very fragile and cool.

That stuck with me.
A friend and his bride went there on honeymoon a few years back--could not believe their picture, how much it has grown and changed.

You have my deepest sympathies. My father, Old Paco, suffered from episodes of dementia in the last couple of years of his life. My brother was his main caregiver, and I know it wasn't easy.

There were certainly incidents of almost slapstick absurdity in Old Paco's case. He lived in a large home on a ridge on forty acres of mixed pasture land and forest in southwestern North Carolina. One time, he got the notion that Mexican drug dealers were digging tunnels on his property and sent my brother out to poke holes in the ground with a long piece of rebar to see if he could find them. My brother - ever the good sport - did as he was asked, and was able to report back that the property was free of drug trafficking activity,

My grandma considered the word "darn" to be cursing, unless you were working on a sock. When she got dementia, she cursed like a sailor. I figured she had kept all that inside all those years, like a lady would. She was never really offensive, but wow.

One day I was pushing her wheelchair down the hall to get her hair done, and she asked me to stop in front of a fire extinguisher. She told me "that guy was up all night yelling so they nailed his ass to the wall."

It was often difficult to keep a straight face.

Fair. Because team sports are, of course, dependent on the rest of the team. And the rules.

Tennis, Bowling, Track and Field - those kind of events are absolute. The rules don't change. They are objective.

NBA never was. Nor is the NFL. They tweak the rules, then you can watch the calls change, in real time. Are they rigged ? Dunno'. But all those groups sports are certainly influenced.

Actually, we aren't. We don't do that crap. What we do is protect ourselves and ours, in a much different manner than the soy boy fit-throwers.

We used to watch the roller derby too although I can't recall teams or names. We used to run around the birch in our front yard with it as if it was the centre of the rink playing roller derby.
