Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread [03/06/2024]The profit of books is according to the sensibility of the reader. The profoundest thought or passion sleeps as in a mine until an equal mind and heart finds and publishes it.-- Ralph Waldo Emerson D To read well, that is, to read true books in a true spirit, is a noble exercise, and one that will tax the reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem. It requires a training such as the athletes underwent, the steady intention almost of the whole life to this object. Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written.-- Henry David Thoreau iii The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.-- Mark Twain 1 We are of opinion that instead of letting books grow moldy behind an iron grating, far from the vulgar gaze, it is better to let them wear out by being read.-- Jules Verne Rank them in order of pomposity. I think this is an entirely appropriate response to a rabid leftist c*nt "journalist" who traffics in the sleaziest, lowest, accusatory stories just to get a few clicks and maybe get to fellate a junior staffer for a back-bench apparatchik.
[go to :57 for the full story] Well this is fun! Here is a Fascist Nazi White Supremacist Nationalist spouting horrible racist tropes to inflame the masses! My three-year-old saw this and said to me, "why is that bad man refusing to respect the innate humanity of our pre-citizens on the southern border?" [Hat Tip: Misanthropic Humanitarian] Acoustic rock is some of my favorite stuff. I think because the artist can't hide behind much...minimal manipulation of the sound by clever producers, and until recently, the voice was the voice! Plastic Makers Lied About Recycling for Decades My little village has a recycling program, so as a good citizen I participate. But...I no longer recycle thin plastic water bottles and clamshell containers and such. Sure, I'll recycle glass (it probably loses money but it can be a net positive) and metals, in particular aluminum. But the flimsy plastic sh*t just gets shipped off to the third world and a lot of it ends up in rivers and oceans. AoSHQ may trigger convulsions and projectile vomiting in some new readers. Several fist-fights have broken out among the doctors, some of whom are arguing that irreversible brain damage is a small price to pay for keeping Joe cogent for the required time; and others who argue that if they equip Biden with a hidden IV, to keep the flow of drugs flowing throughout the speech, they can keep Biden cogent, with a minimum of permanent brain damage. Got word today one of my high school teachers passed away. He had a good life and was an excellent American History instructor. Way back in the olden times, when one could still receive the beginnings of an education, Mr. P would dress up like a Continental Soldier, and expound on the details of Fort Laurens. He would bring in a reproduction period correct rifle and fire it (without a ball) in the classroom.

And you can't just sign up for it, you have to watch every video through AND take and pass a DEI quiz and pass it after each module. It's like being forced to go to a Chinese re-education camp! Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
The Russians continue their slow grind forward elsewhere, but the Ukrainians seem to have stopped their breakout from Avdeevka. Zelensky visited Odessa to hand out some medals and as soon as he left, the Russians hammered the site with a missile, possibly inflicting casualties on NATO personnel, based on a sudden uptick in helicopter flights at the Romanian border near Odessa. After Zelensky complained that this was an assassination attempt, the Russians responded by publishing an old drone photo of a prior motorcade, implying they can take him out whenever they want to. Yeah, I remember earlier in the war when the Ukes were complaining that the Russians hit Kiev during evening rush hour, thereby tying up traffic. Dresden it isn't. OTOH, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for two senior Russian military officers for the War Crime of destroying civilian electrical infrastructure in Ukraine. Better yet, General Ben Hodges was gloating over the ICC arrest warrants for the two Russian officers. CBD, (psst, FWIW - I'm in the plastic's industry) Everyone outside the industry is missing the point about this plastic recycling fraud scheme. Those in the industry know the mandates aren't achievable, that's not their goal. I had a discussion with an editor at Plastic's News this last week (industry rag) about them using lawsuits as a mechanism to FORCE people to stop using plastics - period. It's the "if you can't do this, you need to stop". Think Just Stop Oil. That's exactly who these douchebags are. Go Google the "Center for Climate Integrity". All the usual type suspects there. With China National Sword in the 2018 timeframe and the Basel Convention changes in 2019, recycling markets are harder (forcing action) and the recent INC-1 (UN Plastic Treaty) crap, they just can't put down the stupid. They were trying to outright ban PVC and Polystyrene. Yeah, good luck with that. So many critical things are made with that, it's a non-starter. Posted by: Ciampino I saw using bourbon barrels on a TV documentary, so at least one scotch maker uses them. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at March 06, 2024 11:41 PM (sMS/O) I've toured at least 10 distilleries in Kentucky and 2 in Ireland. The reuse of bourbon barrels for scotch, Irish, tequila, rum, and hot sauce is a common thing mentioned on many tours. By law, all bourbon must be aged in a new charred oak barrel. The used barrels still have a lot of good useful purposes - often times used to age multiple spirits in succession. On my agenda for a future trip is touring a cooperage - where they make and char barrels. I've seen videos but I'd love to see it in person. Posted by: Doof at March 06, 2024 11:47 PM (eNASR) 312
Irish whiskey distillers are huge consumers of American bourbon barrels. Most Irish is aged in bourbon barrels although sherry casks from Portugal get in the mix too.

I enjoyed a Distillery Tour in Glasgow, Scotland, this past August. The Tour Guide was quite proud to show us their warehouse full of used, empty, American Bourbon Barrels, awaiting their fill and aging, with the Scotch, fresh out of the stills. Do some research, and you'll read of the Scottish Whisky Laws, which mandate that Bourbon or Sherry barrels be used in the aging. The Macallan Double Cask being one such example. Aged, first in a Bourbon barrel for a few years, and then in a Sherry barrel, for a few years more. Conveniently, American spirits law, requires that BOURBON be aged in NEW, interior-charred, White Oak barrels. Long as we're using THOSE, Scotland will never run out of used Bourbon barrels for their spirits. Scotland is THE number one reason, why it's damn near impossible to buy an authentic, INTACT used Bourbon barrel, from the Bourbon Trail area distillers. Saw the Doobie Brothers at Washington State U. in the 70's. My buddy was a police science major so was part of the security. He had the door next to the stage. He took me with him and I watched the door while he was drinking with the band in the break room. Great spot...literally standing next to the stage. Posted by: Diogenes at March 07, 2024 12:01 Closest experience we had was awesome at the time, I think it was 2005. Meat Loaf was doing a tour in the UK, all at castle type venues. Anyhow, we met some Brit friends and were at a meet & greet at the Blicking Hall show I think. We'd paid for a meet & greet but it went long and we weren't done till they had let others in so we couldn't be up front as expected. Meat decided we could watch the show from the back of the stage, just off to the right side. What an experience! We got to go on stage before the band came on and toss things into the audience, which was in the thousands. They stretched up this huge incline before Blicking Hall, maybe 5,000 or more. Too watch a show from behind the scenes was just unreal. Meat was truly kind man and very concerned that his fans were treated right. RIP Fireball. Posted by: SFGoth at March 07, 2024 01:59 AM (KAi1n) 447
Yes. I believe Hattie McDaniel's more famous outburst was "It ain't fittin! It ain't fittin!"

434 BTW, my cat has nearly stopped eating her wet food - Fancy Feast grilled or gravy lovers of various sorts. Usually there are several varieties she'll devour and several other I need to "enhance" with crumbled treats. Now I have to drown it in treats. She is, however, eating dry food. Can't figure this out.
Posted by: SFGoth at March 07, 2024 01:33 AM (KAi1n) Rule of thumb, I think, is that they eat what they need. For your own peace of mind, maybe take her to a vet (which I'm not). Posted by: m at March 07, 2024 02:05 AM (o3SCB) Posted by: RickZ at March 07, 2024 02:08 AM (emlEe) 450
Morticia, you up for an SF minimome at a hunan place? Posted by: SFGoth ========== Ooh yes, when? Posted by: Blonde Morticia at March 07, 2024 02:19 AM (wjjYr) 451
Need to see if Gourmand is up for it then coordinate with my friend who told me about AoS. A couple of weeks?

Night, Horde, a mini MoMe at a Hunan place sounds terrific, wish that I wasn't so very far away.

SOTU---
Funny, I found last year's sotu bullshit bingo card while sorting paperwork yesterday. Looks like it might be useful for tonight's too. Reduce, reuse, recycle, amirite? Thursdays are still Grandma Day?
Posted by: JQ at March 07, 2024 03:09 AM (njWTi) 462
Yes they are still Grandma Day She's 2 and 1/2 and such a joy. She wears me out tho!
Everything else, pretty much same old- same old. Posted by: My Life is Insanity at March 07, 2024 03:11 AM (1ymUR) 463
That's a tough question, Cat Ass Trophy.
I mean, they don't want him to flame out early but they do need him to stay awake... Wonder if they'll have "unscheduled" breaks for recharging? Or if he'll stroke out from all the speed? Posted by: JQ at March 07, 2024 03:13 AM (njWTi) 464
I can't remember the 2023 SOTU. What did he do? Did he slur and read slavishly from notes? Tomorrow could be an epic disaster, or he might pull a rabbit out of a hat again. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at March 07, 2024 03:13 AM (wjjYr) 465
Mr. I recently had his Gamma Knife radiation treatment. ( tumor grew back) the side effects seem to be minimal so far. Another MRI next month.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at March 07, 2024 03:13 AM (wjjYr) It's posted at that same C-SPAN link. Posted by: m at March 07, 2024 03:26 AM (o3SCB) 471
I think last year's SOTU Joe mumbled about needing to unite and tone down the rhetoric unlike those violent racist terrorist white christian MAGAS who want to kill women and minorities and return blacks to slavery.

460 What time are they going to start Joes amphetamine infusion?
Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at March 07, 2024 03:09 AM (7AyCR) Stephen L. Miller @redsteeze 7h They have two choices 1. Load him up REAL heavy up front right before so he makes it through the first twenty minutes, then most people turn it off and don't see the crash 2. Low dose him gradually throughout the day giving him an extended time frame, however risking more seeing and calling out to dead people over the course of the two hours. Posted by: m at March 07, 2024 03:33 AM (o3SCB) 475
Thanks, Blonde M.
Yes he did. This wasn't a cancerous tumor- but an aggressive type. ( on lining of brain - a meningioma ) original was baseball sized. This is second time it grew back, only pea sized this time. He's in good spirits and so far only some fatigue. As long as the radiation doesn't affect some other part of his brain, it should be OK Posted by: My Life is Insanity at March 07, 2024 03:33 AM (1ymUR) Posted by: m at March 07, 2024 03:34 AM (o3SCB) 477

Anybody able to lip-read what Biden is mouthing at the end of this 33-second clip? It's three or four syllables.
RNC Research @RNCResearch Mar 5 BIDEN: "I better not start the questions. I'll get in trouble." He then sits there — dazed and confused — as his handlers force the press out of the room. Posted by: m at March 07, 2024 03:49 AM (o3SCB) 487
