Michael Mann takes Ferrari's side of things. Set in 195u, it's about Ferrari trying to save his company by winning a thousand mile endurance race, the Mille Miglia.

Because they just couldn't do Le Mans again. I mean, we just saw that.

A Godzilla TV show on Apple. Probably dumb and gay, but has a neat casting gimmick: Kurt Russell and his near-lookalike son Wayne Russell play the same man, Kurt in the modern day, Wayne in the 50s.

Meanwhile Japan is releasing its own Godzilla film on December 1. The agreement Toho struck with their American licensors allows them both to crank out Godzilla movies, but one can't release a Godzilla movie in the same year that the other party does.

This might be a more interesting movie about a giant dragon. The plot of Damsel seems to be that a young girl is picked to be a "princess" -- because the local dragon demands a sacrifice of a princess. Actually looks halfway okay, even though the "This Princess Saves Herself!" gimmick is getting pretty old by now.

Disturbing trailer about a child's evil imaginary friend, who is obviously a demon.

Sam Spade apparently retired in France.

The song playing is the French original of the song that would be rewritten into "My Way," "Comme D'Habitude" (Like Usual).

For the ladies and young adults, a YA fantasy movie about an organization that creates coincidences, I guess to help people fall in love or find their destiny? Or other gayness of that type.

Pierce Brosnan is Joe Biden in Malarkey.

No but seriously, that is a story based on real events about an oldster who escaped from his old-age home to reunite with old WWII friends in Normandy.

Set, I hope, in the Thirties or maybe just after WWII, since Maltese Falcon the novel appeared in 1929. If they take the 1941 Bogart film as their timeline, then the French story could be set as late as the early Sixties. (Spade was not a fresh young man in either the novel or the film.)

True story time. One year - late 90s sometime -my mom decided to do a rice stuffing instead of a bread stuffing. It tasted good. It wasn't right. The next year, all of us individually (and unbeknownst to each other at the time) asked that she please not experiment with rice pilaf instead of her usual (and excellent) stuffing again. From the littlest kid (me) all the way up and out.

It has become a family meme/joke for close to three decades now. I call it "The Pilaf Incident" and somebody is sure to bring it up every year.

Story: self-selecting writer's rooms full of what are essentially clones that all have identical backgrounds, experiences, training, ideologies and geography.

Melody: I think AI is writing a lot of the popular music. Not the lyrics, but the music. It sounds to me like they fed it a couple decade's worth of Top 40 and had it go write songs. Those that hit are fed back in, and now the output is approaching the average in all cases (as will inevitably happen as an AI consumes its own output - that then continues until it turns into noise).

Actors on the set of some of these movies and TV shows have claimed, straight-faced, that there were lots of blacks in Victorian (or even Georgian) Britain, and even that such-and-such historical figure was actually black. Granted, actors are a particularly ill-informed subset of the population, but I have no doubt this kind of ignorance is becoming more common.

I had a similar reaction when I tried to watch it. My buddy and I have a theory: all Japanese media is insane. This can be good or bad, you just have to wait and see how it goes sideways. You might like it or it will go on the WTF pile.

This isn't the first time they've tried a Gladiator sequel. There was one in the works for a while, in which the gods gave Maximus immortality and he returned to Earth and fought in all the subsequent wars, and wound up working at the Pentagon present-day.

Crowe was on-board to reprise the role, I believe; but thankfully, it never went anywhere.

As good as the movie is, the book it was based on is fantastic (I listened to the audiobook, which I think was something like 29 hours long).

"American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

The two authors spent 25 years researching and writing it; it was published in 2005 and won a Pulitzer Prize. It's essentially a very fascinating and well-preserved time capsule of a much better time ... alas.

Check out "Croupier" the movie that garnered all the attention for him.

That guy could never be Bond. Hollywood never understood that.

He might be okay as old Sam Spade.

I am underwhelmed by the 'Napoleon' trailers I've seen. No way I'm paying to see it in a theater, even with my Senior Citizen discount.

That atmospheric scene of the guy leaning on the fender of the truck as fog swirls around... where are the blackout lights? Full beam headlights there.

In the early dawn as the men rush out of the Nissen huts for the day's mission there is a warm glow coming from windows because there are no blackout curtains.

I expected it to be a blatant-subversion of the 'damsel-in-distress' trope, and I've got no faith in a modern studio pulling that off without being patronizing. 287 May as well post this now, since I may be busy during the weekend movie thread.... Mystery Science Theater 3000 is crowdfunding for their next season. They've done that twice before and been pretty successful. But this time....I dunno if they'll make it. They've got a long way to go just to reach their basic goal, and they only have until Thanksgiving.

The last few seasons haven't been great (not as good as the better episodes of RiffTrax) but they haven't been terrible. Not drive-away-their audience-like-Star-Wars terrible. But now they are trying to fund things from their own website (instead of Kickstarter) and maybe that's been the difference...
