Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Is This Something?Michael Mann takes Ferrari's side of things. Set in 195u, it's about Ferrari trying to save his company by winning a thousand mile endurance race, the Mille Miglia. Because they just couldn't do Le Mans again. I mean, we just saw that.Meanwhile Japan is releasing its own Godzilla film on December 1. The agreement Toho struck with their American licensors allows them both to crank out Godzilla movies, but one can't release a Godzilla movie in the same year that the other party does. This might be a more interesting movie about a giant dragon. The plot of Damsel seems to be that a young girl is picked to be a "princess" -- because the local dragon demands a sacrifice of a princess. Actually looks halfway okay, even though the "This Princess Saves Herself!" gimmick is getting pretty old by now. Disturbing trailer about a child's evil imaginary friend, who is obviously a demon. You're not going to believe this, but Liam Neeson plays a man with a dark, violent past searching for redemption. Finally. In another case of unexpected casting, Mel Gibson plays a man with a dark, violent past searching for redemption. It's different because this one isn't in Ireland. I'm getting tired of the Red Christmas movie trend but this one is by John Woo and features Beethoven's famous Theme From Die Hard. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Despite the dark interiors so that you can barely make out who's speaking, the Monsieur Spade film does look interesting. Set, I hope, in the Thirties or maybe just after WWII, since Maltese Falcon the novel appeared in 1929. If they take the 1941 Bogart film as their timeline, then the French story could be set as late as the early Sixties. (Spade was not a fresh young man in either the novel or the film.)

"Teen Vogue’s Red Tide series explores what it’s like for young Floridians under Governor Ron DeSantis’s conservative policies "Libby Harrity does not like the cold. The 20-year-old college senior — who uses all pronouns interchangeably — mentions their disdain for winter weather from her dorm room at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, when we first meet over FaceTime. He has just moved here from the South, where he attended and subsequently left New College of Florida, aka the school equivalent of a poster child for Governor Ron DeSantis’s enforced Florida brain drain." https://tinyurl.com/yoktpv5r Posted by: Moron Robbie - Hamas is using American weapons to murder Jews at November 17, 2023 04:38 PM (GaiJ7) Posted by: XTC at November 17, 2023 04:39 PM (sm6Pk) 98

Enzo Ferrari was a for-real Fascist, and a deliberate prick. But once you get past that, he was in every aspect larger than most men's lives, and knew wondrous elements of triumph and tragedy.
His autobiography was called "My Terrible Joys," and he wasn't shitting. There are probably half a dozen good movies in it. I'd enjoy watching a drama based on his conflict with fellow Alfa race designer Wilfredo Ricart, a guy who could go weird-for-weird with him. Ricart wore thick crepe soles on his shoes because he believed a great mind should not be subjected to the shocks of walking. His car, the Pegaso, was better than Enzo's. Melody: I think AI is writing a lot of the popular music. Not the lyrics, but the music. It sounds to me like they fed it a couple decade's worth of Top 40 and had it go write songs. Those that hit are fed back in, and now the output is approaching the average in all cases (as will inevitably happen as an AI consumes its own output - that then continues until it turns into noise). Posted by: Oldcat at November 17, 2023 05:12 PM (eoQWY) The first two Horatio Hornblower series from A&E were awesome. The last one, not so much. If Russell Crowe was going to loose enough weight to play Maximus, then I want more Jack Aubrey.
I read where he wants to make a sequel, got the blu-ray version and the deleted scenes shows every day life on the ship, also one of the few movies that has zero women speaking Posted by: Patrick From Ohio at November 17, 2023 05:16 PM (dKiJG) 268
Clive Owen could have been James Bond.
Posted by: Darrell Harris at November 17, 2023 05:11 PM (9xqsh) Nah, he couldn't. He had the look but not the manner or screen presence. Check out "Croupier" the movie that garnered all the attention for him. That guy could never be Bond. Hollywood never understood that. He might be okay as old Sam Spade. 120 Did you see that French movie critics are panning the new Napoleon movie a clumsy and boring?
Posted by: Archer at November 17, 2023 04:23 PM (gmo/4) I suppose if you left out the putting down revolutions, warfare, and politics you'd be left with something pretty boring. Posted by: Oldcat at November 17, 2023 04:42 PM (eoQWY) I am underwhelmed by the 'Napoleon' trailers I've seen. No way I'm paying to see it in a theater, even with my Senior Citizen discount. If you're going to do a movie about Napoleon, you need to get a 'Waterloo' Rod Steiger-like Napoleon performance from the lead, IMHO. Posted by: Gref at November 17, 2023 05:18 PM (5fDan) 273

I would be the best motivational speaker ever. "Life sucks. Get a helmet," as the old joke goes.
Nothing is ever going to be right, except for what you make on the day-to-day grind. If you want your existence to be anything but shit, you better keep taking two steps and forward and one step back, and pray you break even before you fucking starve. So get out and grind. I saw the thumbnail for the 'Damsel' movie in the wild. I didn't click. I expected it to be a blatant-subversion of the 'damsel-in-distress' trope, and I've got no faith in a modern studio pulling that off without being patronizing. Having actually watched the trailer now.....I'm still not impressed.

May as well post this now, since I may be busy during the weekend movie thread.... Mystery Science Theater 3000 is crowdfunding for their next season. They've done that twice before and been pretty successful. But this time....I dunno if they'll make it. They've got a long way to go just to reach their basic goal, and they only have until Thanksgiving.
The last few seasons haven't been great (not as good as the better episodes of RiffTrax) but they haven't been terrible. Not drive-away-their audience-like-Star-Wars terrible. But now they are trying to fund things from their own website (instead of Kickstarter) and maybe that's been the difference...
