Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | First-World Problems...To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. Such privilege-checking becomes a more violent intervention when demanded by someone else. If, after listening to your pathetic account of how your Uber cab took a whole 10 minutes to arrive, I respond “first world problem”, then I am aggressively staking out the moral high ground and portraying myself (almost certainly dishonestly) as someone who only ever worries about the plight of starving children. Naturally, our powers of sympathy are limited and we all conduct psychic triage on the sufferings of others. But when “first world problem” is just a mealy mouthed way of saying “shut up”, it sounds distinctly compassion-free. I have no idea who this person is, but I am confident that he is a stupendous asshole...a lecturing, hectoring, keffiyeh-clad leftist who does nothing of import in the world except preach his particular brand of authoritarian post-modernism. I will now be even more confident of the term "first-world problem," and I will also strive to use "third-world" even more in my writing and speech. It's the least I can do! PS. I know all of you were worried about my door thumb latch. Rest assured...all is well. I contacted the manufacturer (Baldwin), and they guarantee their products unconditionally. They sent me a rebuild kit, which works fine! Although the instructions were awful beyond compare. Tiny little images that seemed to be photos of photos of photos. And steps that didn't apply to my style of lock, but there was no indication of that. So it was a fun 45 minutes, accompanied by much cursing. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Pretty simple to define:
People move (by the millions) from Third World countries to First World countries, whether legally or illegally. Virtually nobody moves from a First World country to a Third World country. The only people moving to Third World countries are people moving from even more wretched Third World countries - like the couple of million people who have moved from Afghanistan to Pakistan. Like many many things, the "three worlds" thing is a rlic of the Cold War. The First World was us-- capitalist, democratic, free, etc. etc. etc. What used to be called "Christendom" or "The West." Post WWII Japan (for example) complicated that, but anyway.
The Second World was the USSR and its client states. You know, the godless commies. This is IMO the interesting part. The Third World was *supposed* to just be everywhere else-- the prospective battlegrounds the First and Second Worlds would compete over. It kinda just so happened that those places are largely-- to use the technical term-- shitholes, and so that quasi-inadvertent common feature became, through synchedoche or whatever, the erstwhile defining factor in the eyes of many. develop a new classification scheme. After the USSR collapsed, the "Second World" ceased having any real meaning, and until an enduring caliphate or something rises again (or Russia changes significantly again), we maybe should maybe develop a new classification system. I think the whole first through third world schtick is based on the medieval concept of the "three estates"
Along with the Republican French attitude on how to resolve it, which leads to the belief that "all those poors need professional representation" that gives elites who fail out of being important in the first estate a chance to shine using their own subject populace. What is considered the Second World?
The old definition was that the First World was capitalist, the Second World was communist, and the Third World was non-aligned. Nowdays, the Second World consists of countries that aren't quite developed, but are nice enough that First Worlders might consider living there - Mexico, Costa Rica, Thailand, and the like. I recently heard someone (Andrew Heaton) quote a political theorist who's point was that there really weren't different types of political models, the actual difference between a monarchy, a dictatorship and a democracy was not basis of authority and style of administration, but is MERELY THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THE LEADER HAS TO PLEASE TO STAY IN POWER.
Heaton also said he was pissed because so far he hadn't figured any contravailing real world examples to disprove this. Posted by: Kindltot at December 10, 2023 02:22 PM (D7oie) Interesting distinction. 49 I think the term "Third World shithole" is an accurate description of most of it. There are some "Fourth World shitholes" like Haiti & Rwanda that are even further down the path of development, but that's sort of an aside. I also am rather distressed that an increasing number of places in the USA are resembling an accurate definition of the term.
Posted by: exdem13 at December 10, 2023 02:19 PM (W+kMI) ---- One must differentiate amongst "Third World shitholes" (TWs). I've lived and worked in third world countries, albeit 40 years ago. They were dominated by petty graft. If you had enough money, and were supported by your company, you could live fairly well.
There was no TV, radio or phones but some say that was a plus. We drove, including my wife, and lived on the local economy for the most part. My son worked in some of the same places five years ago and expats were not allowed off of company compounds without armed guards. They were completely isolated from the locals. Rampant crime, some supported by sate actors (not being paid off) was the main problem. Paid well. Posted by: javems at December 10, 2023 02:41 PM (8I4hW) 119

My FWP today? Went to start the tractor, and the glow plugs didn't work. Turned the lever and the indicator "light" didn't come on. I put "light" in quotes, because it's not really a lamp; it's a coil of resistance wire in series with the current supply to the glow plugs, and when it glows bright red, one can be sure the glow plugs are also doing so. Very steam punk-ish, it is.
So I bypassed the indicator and switch with jumper cables, and cranked the engine. One cylinder fired, no more. Got a can of starting fluid, one little whiff, and off she went. Hubby and I remodeled our kitchen in 2009 and chose Jenn-Air oil-rubbed bronze finished appliances, assuming replacement parts would be available for a long time ... One of these appliances was a double oven and the upper one still works; but the lower (which is used mainly for storing bakeware) stopped working on Thanksgiving ... Authorized service came out and determined the cooling fan quit and needed to be replaced; however, service tech called the next day to inform me Jenn-Air (now owned by Whirlpool) no longer manufactures this part ... Also, no longer available, is the bronze finish. I plan to visit an appliance dealer to explore my options (am fairly sure their advice will be to purchase a total replacement); but I can't help but wonder if the bronze skin could be gently removed and re-installed over new units ... To demand "just shut up", if you preface your whining with 'I know this is a FWP' as the cue to the audience that you know it is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things you shouldn't whine about it at all is just snide and stupid. And equally stupid for to say I'm mot allowed to say FWP, when someone is whining about their mild nuisance of the day. Demanding I give full on sympathy to someone that is fussing about nothing much is right up there with demanding I respect their pronouns if they have the mental illness of sexual dismorphia.

=========== Greetings, BC ... I've had occasional luck sprinkling a tablespoon of TSP (trisodium phosphate) in the sink, adding a quart of almost boiling water, letting it sit for an hour or two, then flushing with regular tap hot water ... Just a suggestion. Posted by: Kathy at December 10, 2023 03:51 PM (LPNLk) 243
We had to eat dirt while looking at a scavanged picture of a hot dog. On a good day we found clay and rolled it into a hotdog.

Listening to Dave Smith as we speak. Dave is Dave, whatever.
He's talking about how Trump went after McCain, and says it was so far outside what any political advisor would have told him to do... and yet it worked. Did it? Is that comment perhaps the reason why Arizona, a state that WAS under Republican Party control, allowed them to steal the state from Trump in '20? And then from Lake in '22? Just a thought. =========== There was a discussion a while back about this. There is a product, I think called zip strip that you can put down your sink drain and poll out a lot of gunk. It’s a thin strip of plastic with teeth on it. Your hardware store will have one. Posted by: Rufus T. Firefly at December 10, 2023 03:55 PM (VloHh) 249

3rd world? Shitholes, the people there actually shit from boards with holes in them, or tiled boxes with holes in them, some just squat over holes in the ground. All shit in unplumbed holes.
4th world? The people do not even take the time to dig a hole...just shit right on the ground in random places, or in the very streams/rivers/ponds they get their water from. They also tend to behave as un-domesticated Animals in other ways as well. Posted by: birdog at December 10, 2023 03:57 PM (sYlnp) 252

The first and only time I was criticized for using "third world" as a descriptor was by a German high school exchange student. She wanted me to say "developing country". I told her flat-out that many of the countries had already developed; they'd fallen behind because of economic factors, dictatorships, or other countries making advances. IIRC I used the example of Venezuela. It was pretty insulting to speak as if they were stone-aged civilizations. The brat didn't know what to say to that.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo I use a manual transfer method as well. Being in hurricane zone we sometimes lose power. Electrical company will usually go door to door in the affected area before working on the lines themselves. Usually just show them the manual house disconnect has been disconnected and they are fine. They figure if you have enough sense to disconnect from the grid before firing up your generator you have a clue what you are doing. For those that don't, they have to hire a licensed electrician who will insist on an automatic transfer switch (or no genny for you).
