We have to get her area cleaned and set up, the whelping box put together, heat lamp fetched, puppy box ready and plenty of towels washed. As well, we need to go out and get lots of dog food for the outside guys and buy some additional lighting for the kennel to make it easier to see them with the ZoiCam we set up. Having a Trader Joe's French Roast coffee made in Keurig. It's OK but no better than Great Value from Walmart which cost half.
Ms G and I went to T.J. yesterday just as a recon trip. It's not far from our place here but in FL where we do six months, the T.J. is way too far away. So we had not been in one for a couple years. I wanted to see what inflation had done. Two buck chuck is now four buck chuck. There were T.J. employees all over the store, a couple in every aisle, whose job it seemed to me was to chat with people about anything those people wanted to chat about. I said to one, "hey where's the wine" and she took us there and proceeded to do a sales pitch for four different reds. When we checked out, we were behind a woman in hospital scrubs that was checking out about six items, but wanted to have a fun chat with the cashier about nothing, that went on an on and on, way after she was handed her receipt. I think lonely people with too much money go to T.J. just to have someone to talk to. Just about anything in the store can be had for far less at Kroger, Jewel, Aldi (which owns T.J.) or Walmart. This one yesterday has an Aldi and a Walmart in sight. Posted by: Mr Gaga at November 18, 2023 08:47 AM (4ZE6o) 32

*polite cough* *strikes pose* The X-ray this week showed Delilah had at least five, maybe six, puppies. On Monday morning, she'll go in for a progesterone test and an ultrasound. If everything looks good, the vet will do a C-section. It's when we get home that I'll start worrying. The first few days are when they're the most vulnerable. There's nothing sadder than a fading puppy. But we will have a 24-hour watch on everyone for the first two weeks until their eyes open. Whelping a litter is like paying a huge amount of money to hit yourself hard on the thumb with a hammer. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 18, 2023 08:58 AM (MoZTd) 60

Posted by: Ben Had - Not at all. If you like it, drink it. You're not eating or drinking for other people to enjoy your eating and drinking (except occasionally when you've got to do that sort of thing to be polite, like Andy and Barney and the pickles). I always dislike hearing people say "eww" or "yuck" when someone else is eating something unless that person has prompted the conversation about it being gross. That's someones food you're talking about, and that person is eating and enjoying it. what was the point of that treatment? was it any better than doing nothing at all?
Posted by: Tom Servo ******* Many people don't understand the underlying premise of chemotherapy. Chemo agents are essentially poisonous to the cell division process. Malignant cancer cells are rapidly proliferating. The goal of chemo is to kill rapidly growing cells. Unfortunately, there are normal tissues in the body including bone marrow (red cells, white cells, platelets), hair, intestinal lining that are also rapidly dividing. So chemo results in depressed RBC's (anemia), hair loss, vomiting and suppression of white blood cells (immunosuppression). Chemo is given in pulses, pushing the limit to maximize killing of cancer cells, then giving a break to let the normal tissues recover. Posted by: Muldoon at November 18, 2023 09:32 AM (991eG) 148

Posted by: Tom Servo at November 18, 2023 09:19 AM (q3gwH) Well, chemo is essentially poison. But, poison's that's less deadly to you, hopefully, than it is to the cancer. That's the bet. And most of the time, the docs don't know if it will be efficacious in your case. In most cases, they have to use chemo to see if it will be effective. As an example, we have a relative that's got small cell cancer of the lung. That is a tough one. He's unlikely to survive. However, there are two chemo treatments that he can try. Right now, he's using one. If it doesn't work, he'll try the other one. If it doesn't work, that's it. Game over. It's rough but he wants to live. I'd do the same. Watching the Tom Hanks-produced "Pacific" last night (about the WW2 war against Japan, this time) and one character was asked in an Aussie R&R visit "What is Thanksgiving?" and gave a totally lame response. But, in it, he ascribed the holiday to FDR. For some reason, I always thought Lincoln was the President who started that tradition.
Posted by: Huck Follywood at November 18, 2023 09:45 AM (Jx/ci) --- The holiday predated Lincoln, but he made it national. FDR moved it forward to extend the Christmas shopping season. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are poseurs who rake in WW II nostalgia while understanding nothing about the country and men that fought that war. This is why I hate "Saving Private Ryan" with the white-hot fury of 1,000 suns. Almost walked out the theater. So pissed when it ended that I had a headache and have never watched even parts of it since. It's in Michael Bolton territory - if it comes in, my hand reflexively turns it off before I can even register what is going on. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Out here in the rural fields and pastures we've heard the combines cutting corn and/or threshing soybeans. It's a distinctive sound of low-revving turbo diesel engines with the 'thunk-thunk-thunk' of the combine.

So, Costco. We were members from about three years, quit maybe six years ago. Our household is Ms G and me. Two of us.
Other than having a higher income level of clientele, with finer SUVs in the lot, and getting to shop with a bunch of smugly self-satisfied white people, what's in it for you, as compared to, say, Sam's Club? We found ourselves overspending and making way too many buys of gear we ended up, a.) not using much, and b.) taking up storage space. And other than their Comte cows milk cheese, which they no longer have, all else was a yawn, but packed to two or more to the package. Now we have, for the summer and winter homes, within three miles of the garage, an Aldi and a Walmart. We take the list, go to Aldi first, then cross to Walmart, the parking lots almost connect, where we get the remaining three or four items. Good morning.
Travel day for me. Leaving Cozumel after using my last time share week. It has a.ways been a special place for me. My kids grew up with this vacation place and my younger son got married here. The saddest part though is that the coral has been devastated by a disease which leaves the coral bleached white. Snorkeling, all you see is patches of white killing off the gorgeous purples, green and gold of the once vibrant varieties. So far nothing has worked. They even tried antibiotics. They have closed off so,e areas but 21 cruise ships due here this week. They are basically killing the goose that laid the golden egg. It is a sad testament to our society that used to revere nature only to jump on the GW bandwagon and sacrifice all this for some pie in the sky enrgy pipe dream. Then, when things subsided, she kept on stocking up until I had paper products like TP, Kleenex and paper towels stacked head-high in the garage. Suffice to say we didn't have to buy any of that for about 18 months. Same went for canned goods, rice, pasta and stuff with a long shelf life. Chester Nimitz was a remarkable guy; born in Fredericksburg. Classic American story that probably couldn’t happen today. Raised by grandparents and his only opportunity for higher education was a service academy. Couldn’t get into West Point but accepted by Naval Academy. This was way before the military went woke of course…

I was invited to a prescreening of BofB in Seattle. They invited about 500 area vets and they set up a hanger at Boeing Field to host the dinner and displays. Most of the actors were there along with the men they portrayed. Spoke to many of them as well as the behind the camera guys. They understood how this was both big business but also that it reached an audience hungry for the telling. Posted by: Diogenes at November 18, 2023 11:21 AM (uSHSS) 380
