"But whenever there’s a snatch of talk
it turns to the Kremlin mountaineer,

his words like measures of weight,
the huge laughing cockroaches on his top lip,
the glitter of his boot-rims."

I wonder if Ol' Joe S. found that flattering . . .? Maybe not. Mandelstam found himself being tossed into work camps as the Twenties wore on, until he died in a gulag in 1938.

Mexico “rejects” Texas’ proposal to allow state police to deport undocumented immigrants

Mexico said Texas’ Senate Bill 4 will violate the human rights of Mexican immigrants living in Texas. Gov. Greg Abbott said he plans to sign the proposal into law.

The Mexican government on Wednesday responded to the Texas Legislature’s passage of Senate Bill 4 — which creates a state crime for entering the state illegally from Mexico and allows state and local authorities to deport undocumented immigrants — saying it “categorically rejects” Texas’ latest proposal to arrest and deport immigrants to Mexico.

“The Government of Mexico reiterates its rejection of any measure that contemplates the involuntary return of migrants without respect for due process,” says the statement from Mexico’s secretary of foreign relations.

209 Can't find the movie. I thought it was a recent story of Nicholas, alexandra, and Rasputin, but nothing is turning up. However, my man Alan Rickman did play Rasputin in a 1996 HBO film; that would be fascinating to see. If ever an actor was born to play The Mad Monk, it was Rickman.

211 I fear what's possible so, yes, I would hang this painting. Thank you.

The Virtual Russian Museum -
This painting reflects both the real events of the siege of Petrograd by the forces of the White general Yudenich and the artist’s own personal memoirs: “I wanted to tell the tale of an episode from the terrible year of 1919.” The artist conveys the setting of a worker’s house and the state of its inhabitants, who stay up throughout the whole alarming night. The colour contrasts add tension to the painting.
The artist employs the resolution to introduce significance into the genre scene, confirming without external pathos the stoicness of people when the hour of testing comes around: “I wanted … to convey the alarm of the historical scale of great experiences … I succeeded in loving the people depicted there.”

It was remade later with Anthony Hopkins playing the role, Red Dragon (the title of the novel). Cox plays Lecter, who is not the main villain of the story, as a kind of highly-educated thug; you don't get the silkiness of Hopkins' version. But he's still effective. Manhunter has very good casting, with William Peterson of CSI as main detective Will Graham.

This may have been mentioned elsewhere already but, apparently, the Washington Post has published a story in which they state that the Nordstream pipeline sabotage was carried out by Ukrainian special forces. They go so far as to name the person in charge of the team which did it. It is believed, although without sufficient evidence, that the sabotage was carried out with the advice, consent, and assistance of the US.

This means that a non-member country of NATO, assisted by the US, carried out an economic attack on multiple member countries of NATO.

Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it?

Once upon a time, low paying jobs were considered starting jobs, entry level jobs, training jobs.

Being able to commit to working full-time is something employers might want to know about.

You're not supposed to stay in a low-paying job any longer than you have to.

300 It was remade later with Anthony Hopkins playing the role, Red Dragon (the title of the novel). Cox plays Lecter, who is not the main villain of the story, as a kind of highly-educated thug; you don't get the silkiness of Hopkins' version. But he's still effective. From the few episodes I saw of Hannibal, I thought Mikkelsen was a fine successor to Cox and Hopkins.

I've always wondered if Thomas Harris intended Lecter to be merely a throwaway character, with no plans to appear in any other works . . . and then he saw how people reacted to the doctor's small role in the first novel. Even then, Harris must have known he had something special, though. He tells the story in past tense, but occasionally when referring to Lecter he uses present. "Dr. Lecter's eyes are maroon . . ."

353 Interesting painting. The newspaper's name is "Krasnaya" ("Red"), and the headline says "Brotherhood" - which, in leftist parlance means lining up against the wall everyone who disagrees with them. The meager hunks of bread and cheese aren't encouraging, and the child appears nearly paralyzed with fear. The modeling of the figures is stylized, but such was the fashion of the time. The painting certainly communicates the fear of people - probably middle-class, to judge from their clothing - who are watching their world go up in flames.
