First-World Problems...

frig45.jpg

The modern world doesn't need a multi-week long gap between ordering a product and its use, especially when there are multiple suppliers for a single product!

Now, most of those are cut-rate Chinese knock-offs, so we can cheerfully eliminate a bunch of the options, but still...

So why does KitchenAid warn me weeks in advance of my need for a new water filter? Could there be some ulterior motive? Could it be that all they want is for their customers to use the KitchenAid subscription service so we unsuspecting folk buy their filters at a ridiculous price?

Say it ain't so!

I think refrigerator water filters are a great idea, but let us be honest...all they do is filter the water through activated charcoal, which is fine! It improves the taste of the water and is tremendously convenient ( and saves space).

Since I don't live in a Democrat hell-hole (wait...what? I do!), I am not particularly concerned with the quality of the tap water. It tastes okay, and I am one of those geeks who reads the fine print in the yearly mailing from the water company, so there isn't much to be worried about. I am not a Karen who runs terrified to the next village council meeting because the report says that there is 9.3 parts/trillion of fecal matter or 0.4 parts/quadrillion of trihalomethane.

Look up in the sky one day...see that large yellow orb? IT'S A NUCLEAR REACTOR!

Anyway, the nanny-ism of the message irritated me. I'll change the filter when I notice a degradation in the taste of the water. I don't need some marketing midwit to tell me when to buy something.

5 So much "meh" I don't know where to start. The whole "water filter" biz is a scam. My Whirlpool fridge has a filter that now costs over $50. It's programmed to need a new one every six months whether it needs it or not.

After 13 years I could have bought a new fridge instead.

6 Had plumbing issues all weekend, first line right after house filter sprung leak, fixed that but then house filter decided it too was going to be a issue leaking like a screen door in a submarine. So yesterday bought new filter housing, all new copper parts. Everything together fine except the unions to connect copper together without heat ( filter housing is plastic. Used Blue Monster pipe thread sealant and seems to work on one connection but other was a failure.
So last night drained line, cleaned off sealant and used Flex Seal on threads and reconnected. Let sit overnight and it leak free

Have no such fancy equipment, especially after purchasing a 'nicer' washer & dryer set in 2018 & finding both pieces with a multitude of issues, BUT I've had relatives who've finally changed refrigerator water filters after ages & at worse the very old filters were a tiny bit slimey.

BTW, the people primarily using the refrigerated water systems were their children.

Washing machines, refrigerators, furnaces...

Yeah, I know, the new stuff is supposedly "green".

It doesn't seem very "green" to me to throw the whole thing out every five years.

Some family members had their ancient furnace replaced a couple of years ago. I was curious... I couldn't find an actual date on the thing, but I did learn that Sears stopped using that brand name in 1964, so it was obviously older than that.

And yep, it was working fine -- except that you couldn't get parts for it any more (probably had to do with Sears going tits up... back in the day they were renowned for keeping repair parts in stock indefinitely).

"Hydroponic" - the fancy name for heated water baseboard systems that wraps around the outside walls of every room is the greatest winter heat there is. No 'wind chill factor' from blowers.

Unfortunately no gas line in my area. Home has no heat here. Well, oil heat anyway.

Wood stove, kerosene heaters, smallish heat pump, and various electrical heating devices all save me a few grand every winter. Winter is 90 days. A blink of the eye.

161 Garden hose water is nectar of the gods when you're a kid.

Kids drink water when the caveman part of their brain says, "its a hundred degrees outside, you've been playing HARD all day, you're thirsty." We wouldn't just drink the hose water, we'd spray ourselves and each other with it.

Damn I'm glad I was a kid in the 70s

164 My fridge here at Stately Peon Manor is an old round-shouldered Philco, which is so old, it doesn't even have auto-defrost. And the only "warning" for doing the defrost is the appearance of the Laurentide ice sheet in the freezer compartment. I will wait for solid freezing weather to do that job, then I can place the fridge contents outdoors while defrosting.

Too nice today. 44 degrees, sunny, very slight breeze. So my laundry is on the line. I am nearly done this tranche of floor repair on the Ford. One piece, the size of a business envelope, remains to be cut and welded in.

An act of vandalism involving a tampon dispenser inside a boy’s bathroom at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego has become a topic of discussion among some social media feeds in the Portland area, months after the issue happened.

On May 18, Lakeridge High School Principal Desiree Fisher sent an email to the school community about a tampon dispenser that was repeatedly removed from the boy’s bathroom wall and dunked into a nearby toilet.

Now, he dug down to the elbow and you could hear it hissing.
Then he unwrapped the tape and hurried to the meter and shut it off. He grabbed the pipe and pulled it away from the elbow.

Because of globul warming the foundation had shifted up and down it broke the pipe at the elbow as clean as if it were sawed.

After that, we always kept a spare. But after the umteenth time of my husband getting on his hands and knees on the floor to screw in the new filter, we saw the light. Our new fridge is a basic Whirlpool with no water dispenser. No more creaky knees, no more ordering expensive filters, no more nagging messages, and no more regular soaking and scraping off hard water scale on the black water and ice cube dispensers. Also, our kitchenaid dishwasher decided to start melting the instrument panel one day while it was turned off! If we hadn’t been home and smelled burning electrical wiring, our home would have burned down, killing our pets. No more kitchenaid appliances ever in our house.
