THE MORNING RANT: Is the National World War II Museum Going Woke?

World War II Museum.JPG

Can’t we have one museum that is not obsessed about vilifying this country? It sounds like the new Liberation Pavilion at the World War II Museum in New Orleans has taken a detour into the post-WWII era, seeking to become an all-encompassing museum of the post-war era. The detour appears to be a hard left turn.

It was a goal of mine to visit that museum, which I finally did about 10 years ago, spending an entire afternoon there by myself, taking it all in. It was magnificent. Separately, my wife contacted the museum and offered up some WWII-era items of her grandmother, which they accepted for their home front collection.

When I visited, I was already deeply sensitive to how so many great museums in America had been captured by activist, left-wing curators and educators who obsess endlessly about race, inequality, and what they perceive to be America’s shameful history. It struck me at the time how special it was that the WWII museum focused on so many aspects of the war effort, without letting the modern left-wing agenda infect the displays. I wondered if this could be sustained, fearing it couldn’t. It appears that my fears are now coming true.

While the new three-story Liberation Pavilion sounds like it has some impressive displays about the worst cruelties of the war, and the lights of humanity that somehow continued to shine amidst it all, it also has all-new displays covering the post-war era’s political turbulence, and assessing the legacy of the war through the prism of modern left-wing politics.

Let me start off by saying that discrimination and legal segregation were real and painful realities of this country’s history. But also never forget that Jim Crow was a command-and-control, big-government program administered by ruling-class southern Democrats, with the acquiescence of liberal northern Democrats who partnered with them to attain an electoral majority. I was not around then, and I bear no blame, but I will celebrate all of the good that came from the struggle to end legal discrimination. I will also argue that the spark of freedom unleashed with the Declaration of Independence led to this great country eventually fulfilling a promise of equality and opportunity for everyone that no other country can match.

With that said, a museum about a mighty war in the 1940s has no business addressing social issues of the 1950s and ‘60s. There are plenty of other forums for that. As far as segregation and discrimination during the war, of course that should be addressed, especially when discussing the gallantry of servicemen such as Doris Miller, the Navajo Code Talkers, the Tuskegee Airmen, etc.

With all that preface, here is AP’s report on the WWII Museum’s new wing.

“Grim yet hopeful addition to National WWII Museum addresses the conflict’s world-shaping legacy” [AP – 11/03/2023]

Underlying it all is the idea that almost 80 years later, the war’s social and geopolitical legacies endure — from the acceleration of civil rights and women’s equality movements in the U.S. to the formation of international alliances to protect democracy.

“Protecting democracy” is a buzz phrase of modern-day leftists who believe that any election or political movement that denies power to leftists is a ”threat to democracy.”

Aside from that, everything that happened before us is “history” and it all flowed from the history that preceded it. The changes that occurred in the 1950s and beyond have an immense number of cultural, historical, industrial, and other inputs. The war was a small subset of those inputs. Creating a display at the museum to highlight those other topics is politicized mission creep.

The pavilion’s second floor focuses in part on what those who served faced upon returning home — “the responsibilities at home and abroad to defend freedom, advance human rights, protect democracy,” said Michael Bell, a retired Army colonel and the executive director of the museum’s Institute for the Study of War and Democracy.

“Protect democracy.” There it is again.

“Defending freedom” and “advancing human rights” sound great, and maybe they are, but the simple reality is that the priorities of the immediate post-war era were pacifying Japan and Germany, and containing the Soviet Union so we wouldn’t have to re-fight the war.

There are numerous museums to be found that focus on the Cold War, NATO, the American Civil Rights movement, etc. A museum devoted to the global war in the 1940s should not be one of them.

Black veterans came back to a homeland still marred by segregation and even violence against people of color. Women had filled non-traditional roles at home and abroad. Pavilion exhibits make the case that their experiences energized efforts to achieve equality.

Reading this saddens me, because I have seen so many institutions hijacked by zealots who can never forgive America for not achieving 21st century purity in 1776 or 1789.

Again, there are stories about segregation during the war that need to be told, and the WWII Museum is absolutely the place to do so. Knowing the discrimination they faced, it makes the service of those being discriminated against even more significant.

Doris Miller was a mess attendant aboard the USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor. His role was determined by his race, and he was not trained in firing weapons. When his ship was hit by Japanese torpedoes, he first attended to the stricken captain, and then grabbed an unattended .50-caliber machine gun and started firing at Japanese planes. He also helped injured men get to shore from the sinking ship. For his heroics, he was awarded the Navy Cross.

Doris Miller was killed in action in 1943. Tell this story. Leave the 1960s to another museum.

“Civil rights is the fifties and women’s equality is more like the sixties,” Citino said. “But we think both of those seminal changes in American society can be traced back in a significant way to World War II.”

Yes, everything can be traced back in some way or another to the history that preceded it. But a museum display about 1960’s women’s lib belongs in another venue, not at the WWII Museum.

“We talk about NATO or the United Nations, but I don’t know that most people understand that these are creations, American-led creations, from the war,” said Bell. “What our goal is, at least I’d say my goal, is to give the visitor a frame of reference or a lens in which way they can look at things going on in the world.”

Does the museum mention that the United Nations is full of anti-semites who think of Hitler as a role model? If America is complicit in creating the UN, then maybe I should feel a little bit of guilt and shame.

Real simple, the National World War II Museum should focus on World War II, and nothing else. Those directors and benefactors who can influence exhibits, curators, and educators need to take a stand now to keep the woke rot in the Liberation Pavilion from infecting the rest of the museum.

I don't think the left invented the phrase a few years ago.

33 There is an enormous difference between museums created prior to the 2000's and new ones. Differences exist in the content presented as well as in the assumptions about the basic knowledge, patriotism, and reading level of the visitors.

The USS Alabama Museum in Mobile and the Admiral Nimitz and the Pacific War Museums in Fredericksburg are (or still were as of just a couple of years ago) excellent museums for Americans with reading abilities and attention spans greater than 9-year kids.

The WW2 Museum in New Orleans did leave a similar impression on me.

Graduated (ROTC) in 1940, was activated in 1942 shortly after Pearl Harbor and deployed to North Africa and on to Italy in mid-late 1943. I doubt that he had any personal contact with blacks prior to entering the Army. In the two years of nearly daily entries in his WWII diary he never once mentioned a fellow soldier's race or skin color, because IT JUST DIDN'T MATTER.

He did refer to Germans as "Gerries". Even though he grew up in German-American background (my grandfather was Hermann Frederick Sch****er) the German army was the enemy and thus"othered". As close to racist as you could call him, I suppose.

My point being that racism on an individual level is not generally what the sociologists and grievance mongers would have us believe.

The only ones we really defeated for good were the Japanese militarists. But they just got replaced with ChiCom militarists, so maybe that wasn't such a complete victory, either.

In case you haven't noticed, ALL of history is a dying pursuit. It's not unusual for the present generations to forget the past, and with the current control over "intellectual pursuits" being in the hands of the left, they're killing it even more than would typically occur.

It's not an insult to point out the obvious: There's a concerted effort by the left to destroy the past, to cause people to forget, to distort and corrupt it.

142 I'm from New Orleans and family friends with multiple board members, including with one of the original board members. They would not be confused with leftists. Just looked at who the current board is and it's exploded. It used to be almost entirely local but now includes "Governor Pete Wilson" and "Governor Christine Whitman" and Todd Ricketts and someone from "Human Rights Watch" in California... The people I know are still there, but it's very infiltrated with the national 'ruling class'.

When I got back from Desert Storm, the ol man and I had a good sit down. I asked him how he handled it...knowing with each ship his sub sank, he was putting a lot of men to death., just as with each target I sent, I did the same. I figured he'd just chalk it up to them being Japs and him not. Surprising me, he admitted that there was a lot of killing by both sides, and a lot of good men died on both sides. He never called the Nips or Japs or anything but the enemy, although he would never knowingly buy anything built in Japan.

151 Adherence to a code, and a commitment to protecting the brother next to you has been a fundamental creed of those who serve for a long time. Nobody gives a shit what your color or religion is. They care about what you're made of and how you adhere to that code. In that respect, the military has been the quintessential "melting pot". It has always been a place well ahead of society in solving social ills, and creating the fundamental mores around which the civilian population rallies. 174 A couple of years ago we visited the WWII Pacific theater museum in Fredericksburg. I was in that place three days straight. I listened to the recordings of the soldiers and soaked in every word. I have been looking forward to going to the one in New Orleans and mentioned it to DanMa'am when I read the last section was finished a few days ago.

About 10 years ago I was honored to give a eulogy for a man that spent his entire Army service working to produce the B-29. About the only service that aircraft saw in WWII was delivering the atomic bombs on Japan. His regret was not ever leaving the states to see action in theater.

I heard a similar sentiment from my dad the year he died. We were in line at a Home Depot buying material for a house we were building for my parents in Greenville, Tx and he uttered "I don't know why I get this veterans discount, I never did anything in the war."

He was 17 when he joined and discharged as an Ensign in the Navy when the war ended. "Dang Dad, you showed up."

History is written by the victors, and that's not us. The country in which we live isn't ours anymore; it was subverted and conquered as surely as if it had been defeated on the battlefield. Now an occupying regime rules over us, and they're doing what such regimes always do. Hanging their vile flags everywhere. Marching their troops through the streets. Broadcasting propaganda 24/7. Re-educating our children. Tearing down our monuments. Vilifying our heroes and rewriting our history. And ultimately, ethnically cleansing our people.

Don't like it? Gee, I guess Whites should have been more afraid of losing their nations than of being called "racist." CoNsErVaTiVeS didn't even show up to fight, and so this is what we get.

206 My dad was born in 1924 in Philly & grew up in the area known as The Meadows where both white & black resided and "farmed" small plots for decades. He never finished high school & went to work for Westinghouse. At 17, his father sign his enlistment papers. (My grandmother & his brother had passed. He was the only surviving son & had four sisters.)
Similarly to Muldoon's father, my dad was deployed to North Africa and later to Italy. He served almost 4 years in combat (army) in Africa and Italy, was hospitalized twice for trench foot, never talked to us about "war," had nightmares even until his death, lost one foot & part of the other from service injury & diabetes but was unable to get disability.
Race was never a negative to our dad, or uncles & aunts all serving. (Race was never an issue in our lives unless it was injected through politics, largely by local wealthy.) Dad told us about the services performed by black soldiers with his battalion (?) & by Code Talkers; fighting with soldiers from India, England & various U.S. 'white' groups who were categorized as minorities at that time.

But very convenient for 'Progressives', for whom history started this morning. Actual study of history, and its import in the context of human behavior and culture, is to them 'Irrelevant'. I hear that word used by 'Progressives' fairly often.

The National Socialists of Germany were very popular, nay...Uber Popular at Harvard in the 1930's, as this was seen as the Progressive "wave of the future".

H.L Mencken, in particular, still thought highly of the German National Socialists (aka....Nazis) throughout a good part of the 1940's. FDR was just not Progressive enough to satisfy a lot of people.

More, more more....How do you like it?

100 percent of Democrats support Hamas. 20 percent just admit it.

Their money and policies have lifted Hamas into a dangerous political organization for a decade.

Saw an internet video of some grand mufti character who went to Germany to visit Hitner in early wartime and volunteer to build them a concentration camp as soon as the Germans arrived to kick the Jewish ass for them.

How anyone sides with these people is beyond comprehension.

212 For academia yeah, it's closed.

But anyone can become a teacher

How do you become a teacher? It involves academia in most places. Talked to anyone who's been through that curriculum lately?
Posted by: That card is maxed out. Try another. at November 10, 2023 11:33 AM (KFhLj)

To get a teaching credential, you need a degree. Most go through the Education degree, which has been captured. If you conceal yourself and get through that, well, they you have to fight your school's administration and the other teachers who are woke.

"Progressives" always side with the newest Thug and there's always a cheering section for a dictator. My Ohio subdivision has a street named for Fidel Castro, in the 1960s. The joke was they didn't know he was a Commie and never got around to fixing it, but I wonder.

214 Seen on the net, so it must be true, that Fedral Government was as diverse as the local population until some guy named "Wilson" decided segregation was in order. Starting with the Dept of War.

215 Lynch, pointing to a “disturbing” 67 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes from 2014 to 2015, called the rise a “sobering indication of how much more work remains to be done.”

Etc., ad nauseam

I'd like to know about that '67 percent increase'. From what to what? 5 to 8? When you start at zero, 67% doesn't even move the needle.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at November 10, 2023 12:16 PM (XeU6L)

What the hell does a rise in Anti Muslim stuff in 2015, even if true, have to do with the situation today?

That's 8 years ago!!

216 Segregation of the miltary has ripple effects to this day. Fields that blacks were confined to are still over represented by blacks. Cooks, transportation, etc.

222 The second and third of Robert Conquest's 3 Laws apply here:

2. Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.
3. The simplest way to explain the behavior of any bureaucratic organization is to assume that it is controlled by a cabal of its enemies.

223 A very real problem of overloading a museum with non-central topics is museum fatigue for the visitors. I have left museums because the curators were shoe-horning in their favorite topics of the day. Those could go nicely into a temporary exhibit gallery.
