Is This Something?

Ages ago, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did a "double feature" movie called Grindhouse, which imitated violent "grindhouse" movies of the 1970s.

In between the two "features," they played fake trailers for other grindhouse movies.

One of the trailers was for "Machete." (Content warning.) They actually went on to make a real movie called Machete Kills. (Content warning, again.)

Another fake trailer was for "Hobo with a Shotgun." But then they really made Hobo with a Shotgun.

The sickest fake trailer was Eli Roth's Thanksgiving. Serious NC-17 content warning. It's pretty repellent.

Even knowing it's a joke -- it's still got all four food groups for a hard-R rating plus a really nasty feeling to it.

Well, now they've made that joke holiday-themed slasher movie into a real holiday-themed slasher movie.

Is it something? I don't think so. I think the two minutes of the fake trailer is all I really need to see of this concept.

The remaining movies yet to be made are "Werewolf Women of the SS" starring Nicholas Cage as Fu Manchu, and the funniest trailer, I think, for "Don't."

Recognize the narrator for the "Don't" trailer? It's Will Arnett.

So, three out of five fake movies are now real movies. Can "Don't" and "Werewolf Women of the SS" be far behind?

Unfortunately, I don't think any studio will greenlight a movie with Nick Cage playing "yellowface" as Fu Manchu.

BTW, if you haven't seen Grindhouse, or the two component movies it was split into, Death Proof and Planet Terror, I wouldn't bother. They're pretty lame and the joke gets old fast.

The best part of that movie was the trailers, and you can just watch them on YouTube. It's basically a joke that can sustain itself for about ten minutes... which is about the length of the fake trailers.

Also:

Jack Reacher season 2 is coming out.

The owners of the James Bond franchise decided they did not like sitting around between movies not making any money and so they've made a... reality series. It's a stupid idea but they do show off some great scenery.

And here's the "Is This Something?" Lock of the Week (TM):

Tony Shaloub says that the pandemic inspired the movie, because people wondered, "What would Monk, of all people, be like during a pandemic?"

Hopefully they spoof the hypochondiacs and don't push the message that Monk was right all along.

3 Funny little thing about Eli Roth.

His last movie before Thanksgiving was the adaptation of the video game Borderlands.

What? You haven't seen Borderlands yet and they're already releasing trailers for Roth's next movie? How can that be?

Because Roth's first cut was so horrible that they went back for reshoots, and then his second cut was so horrible that they fired him and hired Tim Miller to fix the film.

Don't was the best because of Edgar Wright, and he understood exactly what he was lampooning: foreign horror films cut for American audiences that are so inexplicable that they feel random while no one speaks because Americans didn't want to see movies with English accents in the 70s.

16 Really loved Monk but there was a fine line of displaying his ocd. Most of the time they did an excellent job in finding the balance. Only a few episodes made the show worse.

I’m afraid that a movie taking place during COVID lockdowns will tip the scale of ocd to make it unwatchable for me.

dude I have about two thirds of a treatment for "Chunnel" in my head. It's a Python style casting thing -- each of the leads from the show plays multiple characters. Seinfeld plays a civil engineer trying to get to the chunnel train caught in the collapse. Jason Alexander plays "Le Falcone," the French bomber who blew up the Chunnel.

It's the greatest movie I ever made in my mind.

A funny way to handle it would be how I (a slight germophobe) handled covid -- in the beginning, I was like "oh, this is great. They're finally cleaning shopping cart handles and wiping down touch screen machines" then within a few weeks, with the masks, and lysol wipes on the mail and everything else, was like "OKAY! Too far, you guys are all now officially nuts."

Never thought I'D be the voice of reason when it comes to germs.

Actually, I thought Death Proof was pretty good cinema until about the second act.

The part leading up to when Kurt Russell makes his first kill, is well-paced intriguing filmmaking.

My opinion of Russell's acting has been upgraded and upgraded through the years. First there was Best of Times, where I got an inkling he could act (counter to Escape from New York), and then there was Soldier, a movie where very little of it was words, and Russell pulled it off, with excellence in my mind.

But I think the Death Proof turn is one of the finest examples of Russell's talent. He's good in Hateful-8 as well

Seems like that would be very useful and incentivize a more judicious use of social media in the first place.

Green Inferno is probably the highest quality jungle/cannibal horror film made. That's admittedly a pretty niche (and unappealing in my book) genre. It has some significant flaws, but they're in the writing, and Roth doesn't get the blame for those, as he only directed.

142 The original British The Office show had a much shorter run but Ricky Gervais is the acidic boss that people loved to hate instead of the US Carey who was a more lovable loser. The US show was aiming at 100+ episodes for syndication so US shows usually have a more sympathetic cast.

On the other hand, given the short runs of most British series, often they don't have the crappy filler episode issues as much and much less care about likable characters.

153 Speaking of good low budget movies...

There was a movie that came out a few years ago that got great critic review and very good viewer reviews titled:

"I Am Not a Serial Killer".

I'd never seen it but it's streaming on Shudder right now so I'd give it a whirl, and -

Actually, it's very good. Excellent acting, good script, good directing. Well, worth a watch.

It concerns a high school kid who has all of the markers for a serial killer. He's fascinated by murders and serial killers but he's trying not to become one. He sees a therapist but is scared of his own tendencies and tries to control situations where they might show up. However, a series of violent serial killings start happening in his little town and he tries to figure out what's going on cuz he's fascinated without getting involved.

A low key thriller with some nice twists and a supernatural detour that results an interesting revelation for the main character.

If this sounds like you might like it, you will.

OK, I can see that.

I think it was made as an action film without much of a message other than that things are falling apart and good people are being hurt and fighting back.

And I think most of the audience saw Kersey as a hero. In fact, the later sequels had him as some kind of Kwai Chang Caine wandering the country and hunting down bad guys.

214 "Grindhouse" was a slog. Which is interesting for a variety of reasons.

First, "Planet Terror" was just boring. And whatever his flaws or excesses, Rodriguez had never made a =boring= film before.

Second, "Death Proof" has a genuinely great car chase dominating the back half of the film, but to get there you have to listen to 20-something chicks talk about "Vanishing Point" for, like, 40 minutes.

There's some irony in having the budget to make good on a grindhouse concept only to produce films that are less interesting than the grindhouse films themselves would've been.

241 50 I've lately come to the conclusion that the late 2000s-early 2010s were a deeply underrated period for network TV. Psych, Monk, Burn Notice, Royal Pains: they weren't home runs but they were fun and could appeal to a lot of people. They didn't feel the need to be edgy or topical.

Don't make me 'splain the difference between an indoor and outdoor pickleball. Pixy doesn't allow a big enough character count in comments.

Not enough GOP members willing to vote for impeachment inquiry is my guess. At last count, somewhere upwards of 20-30 are reluctant to vote to launch a formal impeachment inquiry and all the Dems oppose.

A new Speaker is wise to avoid a losing floor vote on a high profile situation.

Simply put, McCarthy and other squishes got in leadership because the GOP House caucus has about 30-70 potential uniparty defectors at any one time. The worst were the ones that McCarthy was stirring up to get back in during the recent Speaker fight.

So am I. Because the Pubs aren't going to have the same success in the media trying convince the thoroughly corrupt Democrat party that it is their duty to make their guy the first removed President, as the Dems tried with the Pubs.

All bullshit from a Pub gets called out publicly. Very rarely does any bullshit from a Dem. Nobody wants to see Bill Clinton behind bars for breaking the law against perjury, because as we were told "everybody lies about sex".

However, because Trump tried to cover up something that might have been about sex--and the Dems certainly are convinced it was--they want him locked up for fraud, because he "broke the law" (like both Clintons).

Because, its only about that that's the way they can get him. You're mean if you want Bill Clinton locked up because he broke the law(because everybody perjures themselves "about sex"), but you are unreasonable if you can't see that Trump BROKE THE LAW! And that's that!

311 This all I can find:
Speaker Mike Johnson Pumps The Brakes On Biden Impeachment
BY TYLER DURDEN FRIDAY, NOV 10, 2023 - 05:20 PM
While the Democrats impeached Donald Trump twice for optics - once because he asked Ukraine for evidence of the Biden family's obvious corruption, and a second time for 'incitement of insurrection' related to January 6th, newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is a no-go on a Biden impeachment despite ample evidence that the Bidens received and distributed large sums of money from foreign sources - which raises obvious questions over foreign influence and pay-for-play.

"We’ll just go where the evidence goes and we’re not there yet," Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) said, paraphrasing Johnson's comments on the inquiry from the Republican Governance Group's weekly lunch on Tuesday. "Most of us are saying, look, we can’t even get a single Democratic vote on this right now. I think the voters will reject what they are seeing when it comes to Biden [policies] — but high crimes and misdemeanors? I don’t think we’ve seen that or enough data to really make a good case and I feel like [Johnson] really agreed with us on that," the Washington Post reports.
