Report: Palestinian Authority Leader Mahmoud Abbas Targeted in Assassination Attempt
Sources Say Video is False

Although this is so fresh that no one has genuine information about it -- it hasn't even been confirmed to have actually happened yet -- the speculation is that Abbas was given an ultimatum by jihdists to declare war on Israel and join Hamas, but he hasn't done so yet, so they tried to kill him.

The assassination attempt failed by they do seem to have killed a member of his security staff.

Like everyone else here, I know more than the average bear about the politics and geography of the region but I find myself puzzled about this. Abbas ostensibly controls the PLO but the real power there is Fatah, which is where Abbas' control matters. Fatah has been on the outs for a while now. Hamas kicked them out of Gaza and they've been less important over time in the home turf of the West Bank as Hezbollah has been increasing its power there.

If Hamas wants a western front to be opened, it's unlikely that it will be Fatah doing it and possible that at this point Fatah *can't* do it. The real violent power there is Hezbollah, not the PLO. Demanding Fatah's engagement is pointless other than getting what's left of Fatah killed so Hezbollah can finish filling the power vacuum. It would do little to distract the Israelis, as Fatah maybe can't successfully open a meaningful front absent aid from Hezbollah, which doesn't appear interested in moving out of its happy little war in Lebanon.

The real violent power there is Hezbollah, not the PLO. Demanding Fatah's engagement is pointless other than getting what's left of Fatah killed so Hezbollah can finish filling the power vacuum. There are probably a couple of things at play there. Iran might have told them not to get too ambitious about it (e.g., Iran doesn't want it to spill over in a way that could harm Iran). It might be that Iran gave them no direction and so they remain committed to fighting in Lebanon to strengthen their power there as they try to take over the country. Or Iran *did* tell them to engage, but they're more interested in the possibility of winning in Lebanon than losing in Israel. Israel can wait.

Plenty *could* be going on there, with lots of motivations from Hezbollah itself and Iran.

yeah, pretty much. I think all you have to do is say "I divorce you" three times in front of witnesses and it's done.

Then there's also some sort of "temporary divorce" so that both parties can separate and get their freak on with others for a period of time.

I think their fight for Lebanon is probably taking priority, but that's speculative on my part. And thinking about it strategically, it's a sounder long-term play. You're already embedded in battle in Lebanon, and amassing strength and power there. Keep at it, win the prize, *then* prepare for a truly huge action against Israel later - maybe even with help from your counterparts in Syria if they're able to get rid of Abbas or hold a stable line of control.

If you want to defeat Israel - which is always the goal at the end of the day - there's an argument that finishing the job in Lebanon is a prerequisite rather than pulling up stakes, losing Lebanon and then getting chewed into dogmeat in Israel by going too soon.

So consolidating control over Lebanon while Israel is distracted by Hamas is a pretty decent strategic move right now. Let Israel expend their energy against Hamas while Hezbollah builds up its strength. Then strike when Israel is weak.

Well, first of all, those "assets" are sitting ducks, for anyone who wants to seriously do damage. American force projection is only effective if the other side doesn't have capabilities to fire long range missiles.

Ever kilometer they can advance their line of control in Lebanon adds to its strength and manpower reserves. Every cache of Lebanese weapons it can seize adds to its strength.
