Switzerland is officially on my list now too, but I won't make it there anytime soon. My brother has traveled a lot more than I have and he highly recommends it. 'Expensive but totally worth it' was his opinion. He leads trips to the UK & Europe focusing on places related to CS Lewis & JRR Tolkien. Tolkien hiked in the Swiss Alps as a young man and that inspired Rivendell and other places in Middle Earth.

108 We were one hour out of Johannesburg on a 747 when #3 engine caught fire. I could see it out of my window. We had to return, stay overnight while the engine was replaced, then off again to NYC. However at Isle de Sol, a refueling stop, starboard bogey brakes went, so instead of half an hour it was several hours. Hot, no A/C. Plane was jacked up, brakes fixed. Got to NYC late as the 16 hour flight become 20. We missed our Chicago connection to St. Louis.

116 I used to go buy like 5 packages of hearts and gizzards at the local butcher for camping. Probably 8 pounds or so. Stir fry them in garlicky oil and all those who didn't pack food would be all around the fire with me whipping up mass food. I'd get done and feed everyone the gizzards and in the bottom of my stir fry pan would be a bunch of hearts.

If you can get to the South Island make sure you check out Doubtful Sound. Milford Sound gets all the press; but, Doubtful is magnificent and it's a whole day trip rather than an hour or two.

Right now, IIRC, every County has a County Treasurer. Galveston might be the first one to succeed in shedding that burden; a reclic from the double-entry manual books and green eyeshade eras. Sleeve Garters, optional.

What about the rest of the propositions? Definitely yes on the property tax reductions , but I can’t find how the water proposals etc are going to be funded. ( the Galveston thing is going to be decided by the local voters according to something I read so I don’t know why everyone is voting on it)

I just read Article IX (Counties). I'm thinking "What if counties are required to have county treasurers?" But none such is seen there.

It's just strange, along the lines of amendments I saw many moons ago as a young voter ("the constitutional amendment to eliminate the office of county surveyor in Reagan County"). My thought is: good on Galveston County looking for more efficient government. Kill the office if it saves you money. But...will Briscoe County voters care, and should they?

I wholeheartedly approve of this; I just think it would be better for Galveston County to dump the office on their own. YMMV.

'Cause when (r) Cheryl Johnson had the job, she increased the efficiency of the office, integrating it so well with other County agencies, that she argued (and is correct), that a County Treasurer (and staff) is redundant in Galveston, and hereafter an unnecessary drain on the County Budget.

She literally worked herself out of a job.

What about the rest of the propositions? Definitely yes on the property tax reductions , but I can’t find how the water proposals etc are going to be funded. ( the Galveston thing is going to be decided by the local voters according to something I read so I don’t know why everyone is voting on it)

I voted down some of the property tax reductions as to me they represent the worst tendencies of government to tinker with the tax code. This tinkering just makes it more wretched and complex. Great for lawyers, sucks for the rest of us.

My family has property in Missouri that has a shooting range on it. I really miss just being able to go down there on weekends.

We plan and then execute, and things don't always have to go the way we intend, in order for them to be the way they should be.

The German part of Switzerland is heavy on great views and mountain hikes. The Swiss/Italian lake cantons are fascinating for the combo of Italian culture with Swiss orderliness. Germans vacation there a lot. A good place to spend some time if you're not feeling too athletic.

The French part of Switzerland (Geneva, etc.) is very expensive.
