Good morning.
Only 12 more days until Thanksgiving. Is your turkey thawed? Your stuffing stuffed?

Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a couple of housekeeping items to review. (For those of you from North Baraboo that means Rulz)

1) Open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away until KT comes along.
2) Be kind. Or at least don't get caught not being kind.
3) Do you want to run with sharp objects? Sure go ahead. You can be in next week's Prayer Revial.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List
Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.
Prayer Requests:
9/9 – San Franpsycho sent an update Paul, who we have been praying for as he deals with cancer,
has elected to discontinue further treatment of his cancer. Please continue to pray for his complete and immediate healing.
10/14 Update – Thank you for your prayers. They had a pizza party at Paul’s house to celebrate his birthday. San Franpsycho was thankful for the opportunity to tell his friend how much he loves him.
10/22 Update – Paul passed away. He was with his dear wife and son. May his memory be a blessing. Thank you to all who prayed and praise the Lord.
9/23 – Polliwog the Ette requested prayers for her mother-in-law, Peggy, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It seems to be contained, but fast-growing, and hopefully a lumpectomy will be sufficient. She is understandably nervous about the whole thing and would appreciate prayers.
10/23 Update – Peggy’s surgery went well, but further tests showed that her lymph nodes did have cancer as well, which means chemo and radiation are in her future.
10/28 Update – Peggy misunderstood, and there is no lymph node involvement. But she will still need chemo due to the size of the tumor.
10/14 – grammie winger would appreciate prayers for her son, who has been in the ICU for 10 days and it looks like it will be a couple more.
10/21 Update – He is doing better. He spent 11 days in ICU and is in residential treatment now. Grammie has high hopes.
10/14 – Jewells says thanks for the continued prayers. She is on a 6 week break from chemo, and is feeling so much better. The date for the next treatment is the day after she gets home from Texas.
10/14 – blaster posted an update on sra blaster’s mom, which is home hospice – she has had some improvement. They’ve dialed in her pain meds and she is much more comfortable without being knocked out completely. She is better in ways that a late-stage Alzheimer’s patient can be better.
10/14 – gourmand du jour is praying for his friend Wes, studying in Jerusalem, to find a way home safely soon.
10/16 – Donna&&&&&&V and her sister could use some prayers. Donna&&&&&&V had surgery for breast cancer, and her sister (whom she lives with) has lung cancer, and now also a blood cancer that cannot be treated. Over the past few days she has had unbearable pain in her calf and foot, and they found 3 blood clots. Donna&&&&&&V is afraid she will lose her sister and very best friend.
10/17 – mngiggle requested prayers for his sister, who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and starts treatment next week. She and her family could use all the prayers they can get.
10/18 – Fox2! asked for prayers for Shelby, who is due in three weeks.
10/20 – SB asked for prayers for his mother. She is in end-of-life care now. Prayers for his father are needed as well.
10/21 – Sugar Plum Fairy asked for prayers for her dad, Mindful Webworker, as he has been pretty sick for the last few days. Prayers for recovery to full health and strength, and wisdom for her mom to help him would be appreciated.
10/28 Update – Mindful Webworker had an emergency surgery and is recovering well. They are not sure what happened, and tests are underway, but so far his prognosis is good. He is in good spirits and is recovering well. She sends thanks from the whole family for the prayers, and a special thanks to Muldoon for the limerick, which brought laughter to some dark days. Please keep praying, and thanks and glory to God for the doctors saving dad’s life.
10/26 – Cybersmythe has been laid off for the third time in 15 months and asks for prayers and good wishes.
10/26 – Diogenes sent thanks for the prayers for his daughter. The surgery on a brain tumor went well and, while it’ll be a while before they know the final results, the docs were very optimistic.
10/28 – FenelonSpoke thanked the people who prayed for her township open space committee to buy land from her church. It has been approved. Now they just have to have enough money to last until this is all settled.
11/4 – She thanks God that the township voted to buy their land at the church.
10/28 - ME asked for prayers. He has been unemployed for nearly two years. He isn’t even getting interviews anymore; there have been hardly any in the last 6 months. The longer he is unemployed, the harder it seems to even get an interview. Maybe with the Lord’s blessing he could finally land a job before his savings completely run out. Which is right around the corner.
11/4 – FenelonSpoke prayed that if it was God’s will, there is a might showing for the conservative School Board candidates.
11/4 – Half Dozen sent thanks to the Horde for the prayers, and gave an update on his son’s health. He had a large tumor removed from the center of his brain stem in March. Then there was a month of rehab in the hospital, and on-going therapy to re-learn how to walk. He also had 6 weeks of radiation and chemo, just to be sure. He has returned to work part-time. Progress has been slow but steady. Small things wear him out quickly. His paralyzed vocal cord still has not recovered, so he speaks in a rough whisper, and his voice gives out before the end of each day. Next week, they will all be walking in the city’s 5K with him. It will be exhausting, but a good day nonetheless.
11/4 – Oddbob asked for prayers for his granddaughter. Without going into details, please pray hard for baby E. Thank you.
11/4 – Creeper asked for prayers again for his friend “Q”. We had prayed for Q, who had a bad back, and then had a temporary nerve stimulator put in, which helped tremendously. They installed the permanent stimulator last week, and it was a disaster. He woke up in excruciating pain, running a low fever, and vomiting. A CT scan found an ileus. It seems to have been caused by the stimulator, and if it doesn’t clear on its own, he will have to have it removed.

15 Good morning everyone. Prayers for all intentions, those requested and those known but to God.

Additional prayers please are also requested for my buddies Deb and Ben. Deb suffered an premature emergency birth of her long prayed for second baby. He didn't survive.

This is the couple whose other baby we cared for for two years. B. is inconsolable not understanding why his parents are weepy and heartbroken. He also doesn't understand why his new little brother isn't with them.

My dear wife cried all night.

44 23 and me found a half brother to me.
He was invited by me mum to Thanksgiving.
She did this without consulting me or any of my brothers.
Seems that after almost destroying my family 46 years ago while innocent in the womb dude may finally do the deed.
I'm really not liking this guy. I'm the only one who hasn't communicated with him and I'm more and more of the opinion that that was the right decission.
He blames us for the fact his homewrecker whore mom couldn't be with my dad, which she seems to have maintained a thing for all these years.
Anyway. Pretty sure it's over now. Don't care one way or the other.
Funny thing is nobody seems to see me as a victim of this. I don't either but I never understood why we left Utah. I was 5. Starting to make friends and then bam. We leave. Uproot and bolt with no destination in mind.
All water under burning bridges I guess.

I don't know about your area but here in SE PA there are now therapists trained in some therapy involving a hallucinogen and talk therapy for PTSD with great success.

I hallucinogen is a scary word to some but 'suicide' is a scarier word to me.

I hope they adopt my idea of sealing the tunnel on both sides after installing listening devices. Then pump nitrogen in. It is odorless and relatively harmless. Peoples lungs will fill and they will breath normally until they go to sleep in a state of euphoria. When the tunnels go silent, swoop in and resuscitate the hostages (there's plenty of time) while restraining the sleeping captors. It can work. It's the best naturally occurring gas for the job.

I've stopped kneeling at church except at the words of Consecration. I figured I had a choice of 1) kneeling throughout and thinking about how much my knees hurt or 2) sitting on the bench in the very back with the other reprobates and following attentively.

Also, there are no rubrics for the congregation in the TLM. Also, I don't like breathing down someone's neck. Also, I reckon everyone else can kneel for me, just like I wear a coat and tie so none of the other guys have to.

I would guess that because of the abysmal economy retailers and charities will outdo themselves to get what money you've got as early as they can. I may throw a few coins in the kettle but we have made a conscious decision on who we donate to. 3 Catholic charities and through our church. Funny. When my family uprooted from Utah I had packed my books in a box and it was in the moving van. We moved to Cali to a friend of my parents place. They had girls that were my age. We all read a lot and one girl pronounces the Berenstein bears as 'stain'. I was all that's not how you pronounce it.
She showed me the book and I flipped. Swore I had one outside with it spelt the other way. Parents were all hell no your not unloading that truck to find a book you have right there. Blew me off.

I'm reminded of a book of photos of objects at the Vietnam Memorial. I think it was Offerings at the Wall. I'd found it used and given it to a friend of mine that was there and is involved with local groups helping folks from that and other wars.

It's a fascinating book because the objects left at the Wall are viewed with the appropriate respect and understanding of what meaning is behind them, to the point where there's a Parks Service curator

It's a tough but worthwhile read because of it's simplicity and poignancy. Things as simple as a beer can attempting to fulfil a promise, to a letter from a vet to an unknown Viet-Cong he had fought violently against (hand to hand maybe?) and came out the victor, and he'd picked up a dropped photo of the man's wife and child after the fight and carries it with him every day.

Worth finding.

Reminded my of an episode from my grandfather's story (and i related it in my book). In Normandy, munitions in an ammo dump near my grandfather's field HQS started to cook off. He organized a bunch of HQS staff personnel, to respond. Took them 8 hours to extinguish the blaze, amidst exploding ordnance. He and a bunch of officers received Soldiers Medals, which is unusual, as usually the troops get that one. No one in my family had ever known the story; I got it from his service record.

163 Veteran's Day parade in the little town today. Flags are up on telephone poles there. And banners with photos of veterans who are from here. Vets also get some freebies at local diners and at places like the car wash too.

Our flag is hanging off the garage.

Likely large groups of motorcycles will be passing through as well. Some flying flags.

Knew a guy who put it to the test - 12 gauge shell placed on fencepost. Attempt to shoot primer with BB gun. Success!
The shell blew back and left a big welt on his thign. Nobody was downrange on the other side so, overall, inconclusive.

Relatively, yes, but since the round isn't in a tightly enclosed space, a lot of the energy from the gunpowder explosion is going to be lost to the sides.

I'm fairly sure that the Ordnance Dept. has done the tests and if I'm feeling particularly motivated, I'll see if I can bingle up some results. IIRC, the risk of a penetrating bullet wound is low. The risk of brass shrapnel or other debris is much higher.

Seems like basic physics to me. The gunpowder changes to gas and heat and expands unconstrained by the barrel so the force is not directed behind the projectile while the force on the case is dampened by the mass of the bolt and any recoil spring or buffer. However, I think the same conditions for a fragmentation device would yield the intended effect since the device is designed to operate that way.

My mobile provider helpfully shows "Spam Likely" as the caller ID when it detects an auto-dialer. As a rule, I just don't answer any call if I don't recognize the number or am expecting an outside call. If they really want to talk to me, they can leave a message and I'll call back if I really want to talk to them.

Only related in that way that you can read threads and it reminds you of something, but the Smarter Every Day guy (with a background in munitions apparently) did something recently that this reminded me of. He'd been trying to figure out how to accomplish it since 2017, and they manage it.

Probably the most interesting part to me was watching the safety protocols and failsafes.

Got similar for a couple of weeks at the beginning of the year. Caller with a Spanish accent from local area code asking for "John". My late first husband was named John, but he never lived in Texas and when asked it was a Spanish surname. Still unpleasant.

Eventually started telling them that I was on the 'No Call' list (true) which made what they were doing a crime, and that Jesus loved them and wanted them to know him but I didn't talk to criminals. Stopped pretty quick after that, for whatever reason.

generally yes for small arms, but if you are dealing with cannon or mortar shells you have lot of powder going boom and making lots of shrapnel, and the odd explosive charge.

There were problems following up on WWI where ammo dumps were going boom in a big way because of decomposing powder and primers. It was a concern because in some of them the black powder charges were stored near the nitro that was going sour. Still, an entire dump cooking off is a serious problem because of the amount of powder that can explode.

On a side note, I was looking at "rainwater pools" formations in Nebraska on google maps and found an enormous complex in the middle of the prairie, overgrown, with some small businesses on the edge, turns out it was a major Navy ordinance depot for WWII, and what I was seeing was the old concrete bunkers. That was a lot of ordinance at one time.
