False claims that President Joe Biden fell asleep during a moment of silence for victim sof the Maui wildfire.
As Snopes and a thousand other sites pointed out in coincidentally identical wording, this is a vicious lie. If you watch the video he is clearly dead.

I switched from my flaky HP Pavilion laptop to my Pavilion Plus, which I haven't really used much yet.

It's great.

But it commits the eighth cardinal sin of applumbo: Soldered RAM.

While Apple murders your wallet if you want to put a useful amount of RAM in their laptops, charging 100% markups and forcing you to upgrade the CPU along with the RAM, at least you can do it, with the 14" MacBook Pro being available with as much as 128GB.

The Pavilion Plus 14 is locked forever at 16GB.
Speaking of MacBooks they can now detect moisture in their Thunderbolt ports and automatically void your warranty. (WCCFTech)

Not joking. They will still short out and die - Apple's power circuitry is infamously terrible - you just won't get warranty support.

20 Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals afflicted by Daylight Saving Time! This is the *actual* time it should be at this time of year: sunrise about 5:30 am, sunset about 5:00. When DST was introduced here, I was about thirteen, and didn't quite get it; I wondered, along with my friends, if our TV shows would be on an hour earlier or later, etc. It's an enormous charade most of the world performs even more willingly than it did the Sniffle Scare.

It saves no energy. If we were going to do it, do it in summer, so the sun would appear to set earlier (in relation to our waking time) and thus less hot sun would fall on our homes, requiring a little less energy for cooling. Look at Arizona: They know they don't need DST!

Someone here at AoS said it's a sign that someone is trying to contact me. Sometimes that actually works - if I go to the FB page of the person I *think* wants to talk to me (but can't for some reason) the hoot owl shuts right up. But it's not consistent enough.

25 Anyway! Here I am, up earlier than usual, though with the paradoxical effect that I actually got about six hours of sleep. I've reset all the clocks and watches except the clock in the car, as usual.

The Steinhart GMT watch requires not only setting the hands back sixty minutes, but then adjusting the GMT hand. GMT does not change with DST. All summer it has been five hours ahead of me; now it is six.

The cats think it's 4:45 instead of 3:45, so they are interested in chow. Guess I'll go feed 'em.

I think the hoot owl started when I was writing a story with a reveal about the nature of our being here on earth. Two characters, a person of tech, and a nurse. They discover something utterly amazing. First chapter written, all chapters outlined. So I innocently enough looked up an old girlfriend who the last I saw of her graduated nursing school. To 'refresh my recollection' and use her as a model for description.

I've looked up hundreds of people and found them within seconds.

She is not to be found.

I was going to give this nurse a painting, promised her. Wrote her phone number on the back. Still have the painting, the number still there. We broke up and promise forgotten.

A couple months back I thought to look up the number at the Library of Congress website. A Philadelphia phone book was available of the correct year. Punched in the number. It gives a single result which is not accurate except for the last four digits.
It returns my deceased grandfathers phone number of that year.

(Since I started typing this the hoot owl shut up)

36 Second cup of coffee. In a bit I'll change, stretch, and go for my walk/run. Then I can think about a little breakfast before I head to the grocery. Aldi is a long drive for me, and so what I'd save would be burned in gasoline cost. Better this week to hit the Walmart, then visit Aldi when I'm out there next week for my haircut.

All these little economic decisions when you're an adult are annoying sometimes. But as Parker had Spenser say, "I've been a kid, and I've been a grownup. Grownup is better."

I look up another girl I went to high school with who also went to nursing school. Found her in a minute. Sad story, she is recently deceased. But I can also find her on a professional certification data base of doctors, nurses, dentists, etc. It looks like drugs did her in because she was in an auto accident and some prohibited class of drugs were in her possession.

So the question is... why is the young woman I'm looking for and could not find not in the professional certification database? I attended a graduation event with her at a South Street Philadelphia night club. Room full of nursing school graduates.

Statically, without intercourse there is an 8/10 of 1% chance of pregnancy. The woman I can not find and I never had intercourse but did fool around a lot. How could the circle of friends we had together not have known and told me? Impossible. But 'due diligence' kicks in at this point. What possible event could cause her not to go on to a career in nursing? It's a long shot but I sit down with a calendar and calculate. At this point my wife is well aware of the story.

I find her page, complete with pictures of her. Same slightly crooked nose I have, same hair color, teeth, complexion. I read through the comments to her and a couple of them ring a bell. Especially one about her mother shrieking on the phone, because that really hit home and precipitated the break up. Being a person of tech I find a facial recognition web site and have them compare our pictures and that of the man she identifies as her father. I'm a 60.1 score, he's a 60.2 score. A virtual tie.

A virtual tie according to the tech. Then I remember something my father had said to me decades before. There was a party he had attended where this young woman also attended a couple of weeks after our breakup. She showed up with a new boyfriend who my father said, "Looks just like you." Meaning me. Pretty much end of story. I ran about 15 different pictures I found of her through an 'ethnicity' calculator* and she came up hot for German and Irish. Same as me. But on her FB page she made some comment about not being Irish.

*Yeah, I know they're kinda BS with one picture, but if you run enough through they become somewhat accurate.

We're still in covid but I contacted the Catholic churches in the area where I picked her up on dates and where she attended nursing school. Where there once were 10 churches they had now consolidated down to three. With a tidy contribution to each I asked them to search their records for any birth information for that last name. Everyone was really nice, but they all came back empty. No records of anyone with that last name.

Anyway, end of story. Hoot owl shut up while I typed all this. Onto Krak thread.

85 HP is just following the trend. Our last round of laptops from Dell came with soldered RAM (found out after the purchase when wanting to upgrade one user. Now, sadder but wiser, we're being proactive and ordering 32 GB for normal users and 64 GB for our power users. Hopefully we'll get the performance we need for the four year life of the laptops.

So, it appears just about everyone is signing up for forced obsolescence to increase sales.

89 I *hate* daylight savings time. It was a emergency wartime measure - for World War I, another brainchild of the Wilson administration - yet plagues us to this day. We tried year-round DSL during the Carter administration, and like many of Jimmy's brainstorms, it had to be repealed because it didn't work. During my CS days, I had to write reports of daily activity, and masses of code had to be written and debugged to handle the two days of the year that aren't 24 hours long: what a goddam waste! Let's just do standard time year-round and be done with it.

90 Once again, if governments were on our side, they'd ban non replaceable/non upgradable electronic components. Customers have the right to repair and upgrade their electronic property. Planned obsolescence needs to be prohibited and banned.
