First-World Problems...

This isn't a problem; this is a catastrophe!

My first thought after the damned thing fell apart was to call 9-1-1, but I realized that the fire department might not have equipment to open wine bottles. So I slummed and used a manual corkscrew. It was a struggle, but I adapted and overcame!

Then I decided to fix the damned thing. How difficult could it be? That main shaft is held in the body of the unit with a pin. Whether the pin sheared or simply worked its way loose shouldn't matter.

Except...the access to the tip of the shaft where the pin holds it in place is covered by a pressed-in fitting on either side...and there is no way to get it out without destroying the fitting.

Brilliant design! Although to be fair I have had this thing for many years, and it has worked well, especially once I ignored the company and put a bit of lithium grease on the shaft and ratchet.

But still...I will have to used ancient technology until I can replace this...hopefully under warranty!

The struggle is real!

6 Had a valve total failure 4am Friday and was going for a day trip little after 7am, had it fixed and replace in a hour.
But think starting tomorrow will have to start figuring out how to replace the tup faucets. That won't be fun, if it can be done.

Heat that fitting and then throw it into your freezer for 3 minutes or so and force it out of the pressing.

Then you can replace the pin. Maybe drill a hole in the fitting for easy access to the pin the next time?

We rarely used it, and thought we were doing it a favor (I think the missus just put some ice cubes down the thing and ran the machine every now and then, to keep the blades sharp). Turns out, if you don't use it, it can rust and get locked up. Mrs. Paco (the brains of the outfit) ordered a special wrench which she used to unstick the wheels or grinders or whatever, and now it's working fine.

Moral of the story? Find a partner in life who loves DIY repairs, and give that person a generous budget for tools.

It's already broken. Hit it with a torch and see is the pin was sealed in with lead or solder. Then you can drift it out with a punch as posted earlier.

I put together another piece of furniture. They called it a rolling kitchen cart or a coffee station. I wish it used real wood, otherwise a nice piece. I think there were 14 or 15 pages of diagrams on how to connect things. I picked up a heavy duty power strip, the kind with individual switches. It's close to the counter with my grain mill, Vitamix and Kitchenaid mixer, so I can plug them in too.

The Breville tea maker has an interesting electric plug. It has a ring shaped piece, so it's very easy to unplug. I wonder why I haven't seen that before.

Hola!

Replaced the rollers with new sealed bearing nylons a few days ago. Its made it much quieter. Did not fix the problem of the door hanging up the last few feet and the opener struggling to close the blasted thing.

There's a lot of truth in that. When I was in my senior year at University of Miami, I was working on a project with a group, and one of the students was from Kuwait. Seemed like a nice enough fellow, until he told us how he and his friends used to kidnap foreigners' dogs back home, then torture and kill them. Story went over like a lead balloon, and we jumped all over him about how cruel that kind of thing was. Just so you don't thing I've sold out, it's in an airplane hangar near me after hitting a deer and needs a whole front fascia and windshield, and all the airbags are blown, but it's cheap and it could be fixed up.
It's driveable and there are no inspections where I live so the dash can light up like a Christmas Tree for all I care. I could run a 20 amp circuit to the garage and plug it in like the microwave.

Why not? That should be sufficient. This house is strangely wired, but for a reason. It's tough to find a single room where two receptacles are on the same circuit. To me, it makes sense. Probably cost a lot more in original construction to run so much more wire, but I seldom, if ever, have to reset a circuit breaker. My wife, with 1,500 watt hair dryer, and 1,500 watt curling iron, and warm incandescent lighting equaling about another 1,000 watts over the mirror, has worn a path to the garage to reset the breaker over and over. I told her over and over, you can't do that, you can't have all that stuff running at the same time. Dim the lights. Wait to turn on the curling iron. I think in another 30 years she'll remember.

That's done intentionally, so if the power goes out on one circuit in a room, there's still power on the other circuit. It complicates labeling breakers in the distribution panel, but it means you'll never have to work in the dark.

Those did not work! There was a super scary buzzing sound. It seems yes, they run at low but at fire-up have a massive draw. They have a resistor in them. The knob-and-tube uses the filament as the resistor so LEDs pull too much draw.

I dimly recall the video I mentioned, and the basic idea was that an incorrectly wired junction can allow back feeding of the other circuits.

When you're not bored put a clamp-type ammeter on the various wires to figure this out. Or, alternatively, disconnect wires. Probably a lot of those wires shouldn't go through the switch, but instead be connected to the mains at a junction box.

262 You cannot easily use a cheap 15-amp outlet from HC as a junction box, internally, but you CAN use a cheap 15-amp switch for that. It's insanely dangerous and people do it all the time.

Actual fact: I have seen York big-ass air conditioning compressors under hoods with itsy-bitsy "Crown Cork" caps, like tiny coke bottles, holding the pressurized fluid in. A genuine York is about the size of a Wisconsin V-4.

There was a wiring "theory" around, 40, 50 years back, that arose from the mobile home industry, that called for each room's electrical lead to originate from one single box in the ceiling -- making it modular you see. This was never standard practice for residential, but an employee of mine who was born in Tennessee and did a lot of side remodeling work told me about seeing it in places that had been "side jobs" for "professionals" who'd learned their trade in northern Indiana, IYGWIM.

If done right, it won't in itself cause a fire, but you have to be sure nobody has crossed a second circuit through there.

270 Indeed, these mechanical marvel cork pullers are nice when they work, and fun to observe them doing their job. However... they are rather complex little machines, and even the best of them will eventually break down and leave you high and dry.

I've tried lots of fancy cork pullers over the years, and eventually decided that the "double-hinge" folding corkscrew is the best one to have. It is compact enough to easily fit in a pocket, and gives you two leverage points, one for starting the pull and one for finishing. If you cannot pull a cork with one of these, you'd best just throw the bottle away, because a cork that firmly stuck means the wine inside will be simply awful.

You can find these double-hinge cork pullers on Amazon, for a wide range of prices, but they all work the same. And if you are a little cheap, go to Trader Joe's, and you can find one for about $3 (last I checked). They are sturdy and dependable, and should last you a lifetime (or until you manage to forget it at a friend's house).

My one complaint about the typical double-hinge cork puller is that the little serrated knife it has for cutting the capsule is simply crap.
