Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Emergency Backup Overnight Thread [11/02/2023]: “The Ornithologists Are Not OK”[Weird Dave had something unexpected come up today, so he has called the bullpen for some emergency relief. – Buck] There have been a number of stories in recent days speculating that the tyranny of wokeness has run its course. Earlier this evening, Ace linked to one from Megyn Kelly titled: “We’re Witnessing the Collapse of Wokism.” But then there are stories like this one below, and it’s clear that the crazy, woke, obsessives will never stop in their zeal to figuratively tear down every bit of our culture, including…the naming of birds. “These American birds and dozens more will be renamed, to remove human monikers” [NPR – 11/01/2023] That’s right, the American Ornithological Society is going to rename birds that were named after problematic people, along with any other bird names deemed offensive or exclusionary.Get ready to say goodbye to a lot of familiar bird names, like Anna's Hummingbird, Gambel's Quail, Lewis's Woodpecker, Bewick's Wren, Bullock's Oriole, and more. That's because the American Ornithological Society has vowed to change the English names of all bird species currently named after people, along with any other bird names deemed offensive or exclusionary. These people have lost their minds. But it’s an ONT so let’s have some fun with the subject of bird names. I posted this thread below as filler during one of Ace’s vacations a year or two ago, but with bird nomenclature in the news, I’m going to slap it up again: So there it is, horde. Just remember, you can’t soar like an Eagle if you’re surrounded by Fluffy-Backed Tit-Babblers. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I can promise you that drongo birds are real. They are incredibly territorial birds who will screech and dive at runners, walkers, bicyclists, and anyone else who intrudes upon their territory.
They also have the most incredible attack hand-off skills of anyone I've ever seen. They'll be in mid-flight, "chasing" you from their territory, when you step over an imaginary line... and whammo! The bird in the next territory is already inbound from the IP, cleared hot, and the former drongo snap rolls off his attack vector and heads to harass the next interloper in their territory. Hurriedly, the jogger tried to outpace the Greater Canada Goose, but it was not to be deterred.
Alternately running and flying, it soon cut the angles on the jogger, honking it's anger and derision at the human it was attacking, intent on running him out of "his" territory. The chase continued, the Goose extending and reaching out it's neck, eager to inflict even peck and bite that it could land on the poor runner's legs. So eager it's lunges, one would've maybe thought it anxious to receive the greatest, and last surprise of it's shit spewing life. The machete flashed, the feathers flew and the spray of blood was a monochrome rainbow in the morning light. And the Goose was Cooked. At 375 for three hours, in a pot with carrots, potatoes, onions and seasoned with salt, pepper, sage, garlic and thyme. Posted by: N at November 02, 2023 10:27 PM (RjBju) The flying buttress is not principally for looks, it provides horizontal stability to allow taller walls and more windows, without requiring thicker walls. I think the "end of wokeness" is just another in the long line of conservatives thinking that liberals play by the same rules, or learn from their actions.
Liberals will start to get destroyed by their own wokeness, naive conservatives will call a truce or agree we need a reprieve for all those hurt by cancel culture, and 10 seconds later liberals will try to destroy all those they tried to destroy before, while giving their own a pass. Don't let liberals of the hook, beat them over the head with their own rules until they see the error of their ways, and after they do continue to beat them over the head until they all move away to Canada. they were not built to encourage the nature and or existence of God, they were builty to glorify God, nobody was encouraging contemplation then.
questioning was not appreciated Really? Monks and nuns weren't encouraged to contemplate? The average peasant wasn't able to read, so questions like those above were often beyond his reach. That's why the stories of the bible are presented as pictures in stained glass windows. However, for the educated class (and also to the lower classes), it was reinforcement of the awesome nature of God. Posted by: Archimedes at November 02, 2023 11:01 PM (I/Qkd) 212

Most amazing thing about the flying buttresses is that they were an improvisation to a huge engineering problem. The medieval builders had mastered the skill of building extremely tall, relatively thin walls that could hold a lot of glass. (Roman building walls were always quite thick and heavy, and could not go extremely high because of it) BUT when these builders put a heavy roof on them, the walls would push outward and collapse. The flying buttress was the answer.

The downside to the earlier, thick walled Romanesque churches, with massive internal arches, is that they were very closed in and dark. The Gothic Cathredrals celebrated Light, and with the addition of the great stained glass windows (such as at Chartres) they created vast internal spaces full of light and dazzling color in a manner that had never been seen before.

Regarding temples, cathedrals, and the like.
But who is able to build a temple for him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain him? Who then am I to build a temple for him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before him? 2 Chronicles 2:6 We can't ever do the Lord justice in our structures. However.... So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up on Mount Ebal, these stones, as I am commanding you today, and you shall coat them with lime. Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the Lord your God, an altar of stones; you shall not wield an iron tool on them. You shall build the altar of the Lord your God of uncut stones, and you shall offer on it burnt offerings to the Lord your God and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and rejoice before the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 27: 4-7 He also ain't mad at it. Faithful servants have been building temples and alters from the beginning, many times at the behest of the Lord. Both the Mountain Men and the Indians agreed, Panther Meat was highly prized and sought after. Bear was desired, not so much for it's flavor, but the Bear Grease was super-valuable, both for the percussion arms of the time, but also as a much needed dietary fat, to help 'em survive harsh winters. A cut of deer or whole rabbit, pan fried in bear fat, not only made the meat taste better, but put the needed fat (tastily) into the diet. Oh, and the bear hides were priceless treasures, too. Wolf, coyote and other meat eaters were indeed, not sought for table fare. Tuna is the most expensive fish in the sea, and is a straight up fishavore. Think of a Walleye in Northern freshwaters, now think of a Cod with the same, bulging eyes. There fished in Berents Sea by HUGE factory ships, and the filets destined for McD's are actually the highest standard to color, lack of veining, consistent meat and etc., that the ship can produce. They're "candled" to see through the meat, much like eggs are to find and exclude the ones with developed embryos. Flash/DEEP frozen, packed in flat, pizza-ish sized boxes they're craned off the ship in huge pallet loads, transferred directly to freezer containers, and South they go. A McD's fish might not be breaded and cooked to my liking, but the fish under the mess they make of it is as good as any on your plate to be found. One of the criticisms of trophy hunting is that the meat is wasted. In fact very little protein in Africa and similar spots goes to waste. The market value of the game meat is a factor in the price setting of trophy fees.

Between yesterday and today, I did get a little time in on the Ford. I now have two strips of hat channel welded in to support the new floor panels. One runs across the floor at the base of the toe board, where the driver's heels would rest, and the other just forward of the front of the seat. That gives me something that the replacement floor sections can be welded to, besides the edges of the remainder of the original floor. There was a huge hole, and I cut away the rotten metal surrounding that hole, leaving "mostly" sound metal to weld to.

Just what event, exactly, starts the 'common era'? Is history now to be discussed in geologic terms because it was, like, so long ago? No wonder they're destroying math literacy. I started my day with speech at the Rotary Club. Shuffled staff and children to provide coverage for absent staff member. Got toddlers to sing hallelujah and laughed with parents. Took garbage out, hoping new dumpster with metal lid and bar will be sufficient to keep any bears that are still roaming, out.
We had to replace our last dumpter because even though it was strapped down, a bear tore the plastic lid off the hinge. It really wanted those dirty diapers! Posted by: AmericanKestrel at November 03, 2023 01:06 AM (S5+ge) 457

So when the Society for the Putting of Things on Top of Other Things disbanded, they decided to join the American Ornithological Society and make useless changes because making important contributions is just too much work.
Good Job! Award yourself the Ornithologist of the Year award and give yourself a nice certificate to hang on the wall! Beats working for a living. Posted by: JB1000 at November 03, 2023 01:21 AM (CSptT) 464

Posted by: Mister Ghost at November 03, 2023 01:01 AM (TGPs7) There are also more official Catholic exorcists in WI than in any other state. Go figure. Most of the covens are around Mt. Horeb, and the priest in Pine Bluff has been cracking down on the infestations and oppressions from these horrid witches. It isn't a pretty job. 435 We've got a settlement named Kalifornsky here in Alaska. The founder was an Alaska Native dude who worked for the Russians at Fort Ross for a while, and was given the Russian name Peter Kalifornsky when he got back (probably to distinguish him from some other Peter).
